I read this as our English book in either grade 11 or 12. but I can't remember the name of the book. I do remember a few "details" but its a bit blurry (read it over 20 years ago)
The story is set in the 17/18th century Ireland. It's about this guy who was a son of one of the English Land lords, during that era, who befriended the local Irish who was living in the (using thesouth african term here as me can't remember the correct english word) shacks that the laborers use. He has then to come to grip with the facts that he sees among the Irish peasant folk, and the "facts" he was taught as an English Noble.
At the end of the book he's arrested, tried, convicted and sentenced to death (me think it was for treason). Just before the end of the book, an Irish lady comes to his cell and ask for a "momento", he then hands her his handkerchief (or scarf me can't remember), and she sdays she'll keep it safe, and thanks him for being a great Irish hero
hope someone knows this book
