I read this short story a long time ago and I remember liking it, but cannot for the life of me remember what it was.

Below are all the details I recall.

1. The main character is a young man who (I think) is leaving college or refusing to go. He doesn't have an interest, but his father is determined that he get some type of education. So he decides that his son has to apprentice under a chef who is a real hard nose guy for a year. If at the end of that year he wants to leave and do whatever he wants, that'd be fine.

2. The young man at first hates where he is and has no interest, but eventually he realizes he's very good at this, and he eventually earns the chef's respect. So much so that the chef wants him to stay on and let him (the chef) be his mentor.

3. The young man develops his skills and is so good that the Chef picks him to personally run an expansion restaurant (this is all taking place in Europe, I believe).

4. The father is brought to his son's restaurant and is very proud of what his son has been able to accomplish.

This is all I recall and hopefully someone recognizes this. I remember really liking this story, but would love to be able to read it again.

This definitely sounds like something Jeffrey Archer might have written.

Some details are different but check out the short story "A la Carte" which was published in the collection called "A Twist in the Tale".

oh snap, maybe you're right. I've read a bunch of Archer's short stories in the past, and I have them all on my iPad, I just haven't dove into them yet. Thanks! I'll let you know if it's the one I'm thinking.

I'm glad I could help. :)

Funnily enough, I usually don't read short stories at all, the exception being those written by Jeffrey Archer, which have always appealed to me. Over the past 20+ years I must have read them all.

ETA: Ooops. I just follwed the link to your book and it seems short stories are your genre. Sorry.
