What is Basil?
Also known as Sweet Basil, Basil is a culinary herb belonging to the family of mint plants. The leaves of this annual plant are considered an essential ingredient, especially in Southeast Asian and Italian cuisine. The taste of Basil is similar to that of anise, having a sweet smell.
With over 4000 years of existence, Basil has long been associated with royalty. The word “Basil” was derived from the Greek word, “Basileus”, which refers to “king.” With such strong associations across Greece, it has made an everlasting impact in the East as well. For example, in India, it was considered a sacred herb. People dwelling in India called it a strong protector. They used to plant Basil around their temples. In Hindi, they still call it the “Tulsee” plant.
Basil was introduced in the US in 1621, when the “Massachusetts Bay Colony” was born. The cultivation of this ancient herb began from there, spreading through various colonies. This has made Basil an essential herb to be used in terms of adding a unique flavor to different cuisines from all around the world.
