For now I am using an old version of GPM and detaching from the Play Store so it doesn't try to update.

hey, how you do that? i only use GPM for local files, because all other player mess the mp3 tags, and end up with more disc folders (although the tags are ok, edit with mp3tag and aimp tag editor).

That's what I was asking lol... as I too only use GPM for local MP3s because no other player I've found shows my newest or recently played albums first. Alphabetical album order is pretty useless for me.

But my solution for now is to disable GPM, then enable it again which results in a 2019 version of GPM on my phone. Then since I am rooted, I use another app to detach GPM from the Play Store so I can automatically update all apps EXCEPT for GPM.

Ideally someone mods the latest version of GPM so it doesn't call home and allows us to use it forever in Download Only mode.

It would be nice a Mod version to make Google Play Music work again in local mode to find our audio files.

Otherwise, I found an alternative to GPM to find our music gallery ; local files (albums of mp3, m4a files, etc.).
There is the Muzio Player application with its software interface very similar to Google Play Music.
You can find exactly our music gallery with its tabbed folders: sorted by Albums, by Titles, by Artists, by Genres.
like Google Play Music did so well. So Muzio Player is a very good audio player and doesn't modify the tags of the files.
There is also a Playlists tab with a "Latest additions" section for the latest downloaded audio files.
