Got the same issue for a while now, happened to WSJ and Washington Post (Old Version). The article will be opened in Custom Chrome Tab, instead of the app. Then, it can check if I am not a valid paid subscriber. So, I cannot read that premium article. I notice that it happened to some paid contents, not every articles.

On WSJ app sometimes articles open in a sort of in-app browser.
I use Iceraven with antipaywall addons as the default browser app and if i open an article with that (from thw WSJ app) Iceraven offers the option to open the same article/page with the compatible specific app, WSJ app in our case. Not really an issue, but sometimes is annoying
