Ads still present. When I hit the x on the ad, it asks to remove ads or cancel. I click remove ads and it does nothing.

I've posted on this before, as have others.
It seems all the modified version really does is make your profile page show the VIP symbol on your avatar.
Not sure if OP is just posting links or actually does the mods, either way never seen anything in the form of a reply about that issue.
Only way to get rid of the ads is to use something like AdAway from over on XDA.

On another related topic, I'd like to request the file host uploads.to not be used as they employ shady tactics like pop-ups, redirects, and fake security messages.
It's not used on this specific thread, but it was in the thread for the 5.8.2 version of Tapatalk and a variety of other ones. There's also a file host that blocks people who use an adblock. Given the nature of some of these files (like an "AdFree" version of Tapatalk) it seems counterintuitive to use these. Just my 2¢ though.

I also had the same problem and apparently have solved by uninstalling the application and reinstalling it again and so the ads have disappeared
