Overview: Air Base No. 4 at Lajes, Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal, did not appear by chance nor can its history be summarized from de information we have about it over the last forty years. It consists of a list full of various events that lead to its creation and to its present role as an ”aircraft carrier/refueling station” in the middle of the Atlantic.
Little by little, I started to compile information and organized it in a way that the readers could learn about the history of the base in a pleasant manner. From the proceeding events that justified the political battle until its consolidation and affirmation as an Air Base. I felt it would be of interest to include a section dedicated to the Air Base in Santa Maria island, because it was created form Lajes and the U.S. Detachment stationed in Santa Maria was transferred to Air Base No. 4 after the Royal Air Force departed Lajes.
