Overview: In 1941, the US Army decided to upgrade its fleet of armored vehicles by replacing the M3A1 Scout Car. In the technical requirements, the military demanded an armored car with a 37mm cannon in a rotating turret.
The acceptance commission was offered several options: T17 was rejected because of too much weight; T17E contained a number of constructive inadequacies to requirements, which, however, did not prevent to sell it to England. Finally, in June 1942, a project with a 6x6 wheel formula, which received the official military name M8 Light Armored Car - M8 light armored car, was approved.
