Dogra Rulers of Jammu & Kashmir by Sat Prakash Suri
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 400 KB
Overview: This book is the result of studies which I pursued after settling down at Jammu after more than three decades of association with the film profession at Mumbai.
I have been fascinated by Dogra history since my student days. The interest in the subject was inculcated by my father who was a repository of anecdotes related to Dogra rulers and appreciated their pro-people policies which they implemented with great gusto.
Maharaja Gulab Singh unified the three regions of the State into one political entity and extended its boundaries to Tibet. The three regions which he tagged together, that is, Jammu, Kashmir and Frontier areas, were culturally, ethnically and religiously different from each other. A horrendous job which he completed with his far-sighted vision.
Maharaja Ranbir Singh consolidated the territories of the State and put it on the fast track of economic development.
Maharaja Pratap Singh, though remained embroiled in controversies, continued the thread of reforms initiated by his predecessors.
Maharaja Hari Singh’s name became synonymous with reforms for modernizing the State. He epitomized the positive spirit of life and took a leap to improve the seamy lives of the most vulnerable classes of society, a legacy which he inherited from his forefathers.
I am grateful to many people. The first and foremost of all them is Maharaja, Dr. Karan Singh Ji, a philosopher turned statesman and a great educationist; internationally acclaimed humanitarian, a great philanthropist, and presently a Rajya Sabha member, for going through the typed manuscript and correcting the script with valuable suggestions.
I remain obliged to Mr. Kuldeep Sawhney of M/s Sunder Das Kuldeep Sawhney, Jewellers of Jain Bazar, Jammu, who very kindly introduced me to Mr. Raghuvir Singh Pathania of Amar Mahal Museum and Library. Mr. Pathania suggested a number of books to me and he very honestly guided me at every step for the pursuit of books related to Dogra history.
Second on line comes Dr. S.L Abrol, former Senior Scientific Officer, University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC), University of Jammu and Dr. B.L Mehta, former Scientific Officer, Post-graduate Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu, for giving valuable suggestions of immense importance related to Dogra rulers.
Dr. A.K Sahni, Scientific Officer, Post-graduate Department of Geology, University of Jammu and Sardar Charan Singh, former Assistant Librarian, Post-graduate Department of History for their guidance related to the subject.
