Betrayal of Trust: Commander Wyatt & the Halifax Explosion by Joel Zemel
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 14 MB
Overview: Before the Halifax Explosion, Cmdr. F. Evan Wyatt was a married officer, popular with the city’s elite and a promising career in the Royal Canadian Navy. The French munitions ship, SS Mont-Blanc, & Norwegian freighter, SS Imo, collided in Halifax Harbour on Dec. 6, 1917 resulting in 2000 dead, 9000 injured, thousands without shelter. An inquiry into the cause of the collision quickly devolved into a hunt for scapegoats: the captain & pilot of the French vessel and the RCN’s CXO, Wyatt were charged with manslaughter & criminal negligence. The former were released on a writ of habeas corpus, but Wyatt was indicted, and although acquitted, his reputation/professional career lay in ruins. Why did the RCN not protect one of its own?
