Overview: In fact, the Japanese attacked Kohima with a whole infantry division, in a two-pronged configuration, led by Lt Gen Sato. One phalange captured the sole southern road to Imphal, and started moving up into the underbelly of the hill station, directly directly assaulting Kohima across the hills. The Japanese substantially took possession of Kohima, except for defensive pockets from which they could not extricate the defenders. By cutting off the road to Dimapur at Zubza, they effectively put Kohima under siege as well. Over some 12 days of fighting, the 161 Indian Inf Bde became besieged at Jotsoma, while the Royal West Kents were pinned down on Garrison Hill. The Japanese in turn secured the Deputy Commissioner’s bungalow on a terraced hill, with its tennis court. These they developed into a heavily fortified position, surrounded by formidable bunkers. In addition, the Japanese occupied most of the impregnable Kohima massif, over-looking the hill station.
