23-24 Leinster Gardens





23–24 Leinster Gardens is in the Bayswater area of London. The building looks just like the others on the street, but it's merely a facade with painted windows and false doors. When viewed from the front, the only things that give it away are that the doors have no letter slots and the windows aren't lit up at night.

Originally, the building WAS just a regular building, like its neighbors. However, the Metropolitan Railway constructed a tunnel to connect Paddington Station and Gloucester Road in 1868. The locomotives they used at the time vented steam when running, and they needed to create an open section in the tunnel to allow the steam to escape from the tunnel. The building at 23-24 Leinster Gardens was demolished, but the city left the building facade, so as not to leave a gap in the row of five-story houses. According to Wikipedia, the facade itself is about 1.5 meters thick, similar to that of the other houses in the row.

When viewed from the back on Porchester Terrace, which runs parallel to Leinster Gardens, you can see the subway tracks, the back of the facade, and the steel struts that support the building. I used to live in that area and walk along Leinster Gardens, and it was months before I noticed there was anything strange about the building.

The address gained attention/notoriety when it was featured in episode 3 of the third season of Sherlock, "His Last Oath." In that episode, 23–24 Leinster Gardens is one of Sherlock Holmes' hiding places, and the spot where he meets John Watson's wife, Mary.
