Congrats workerbee!
You conquered your boredom and actually won the thing.
Well done!
Special kudos to cheepie for being the first to break the code -- bicycles vs motor vehicles -- and also asking some pretty astute and imaginative questions. That was the best WAI debut I've seen since I've been here. Congrats for a job well done.
Mount Vernon Trail

The Mount Vernon Trail is a popular bicycle path in the Washington DC area. It runs for 18 miles along the Virginia side of the Potomac River, starting near Theodore Roosevelt Island and ending at Mount Vernon, the plantation home of George Washington.
Aside from the views of the Potomac and Washington monuments, there is a short stretch through Old Town Alexandria (on city streets, unfortunately).

Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial across the Potomac

Old Town Alexandria
The trail also passes by Gravelly Poimt, a popular place for watching planes take off/land at National Airport...with extremely close flyovers -- right over the top of your head. Gravelly is considered by many the best place in the United States for plane watching.

Other points along the way include Arlington Cemetary.
More info and maps (non-commercially available
) HERE and HERE
Groggy? you ask?
Read the first paragraph under the Wikipedia article on Grog. Then follow the link to Edward Vernon, after whom Mount Vernon was named.
As for the question I had been waiting for...since day one
... "Are you in Northern Virginia?" Virginia is divided into Northern Virginia and "the rest of Virginia".
Put another way, it's commonly accepted that NoVa is part of the Greater Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area and asking that question would have focused people on the WDC area and it's activities and attractions...and dramatically reduced the search space!

Mount Vernon, the home of the first American president George Washington, was named after Vernon, since Washington's elder brother served under Edward Vernon, and gave it his name.
