What is a Wheelwright?
A wheelwright is a person who builds or repairs wooden wheels. In the days when the nation relied on horse drawn transport, particularly before the era of the railways, wheelwrights played an important role in keeping the country moving by making and repairing wheels, carts and wagons. Some built carriages, landaus and coaches, right through from the construction of the wheels and the bodywork, to the upholstery, finished paint work and the coat of arms. The wheelwright would work closely with the blacksmith, often in the same premises.

Wheelwrighting Today
As the name suggests wheelwrights make and repair all types of wooden wheels and the vehicles they go on including Carts, Carriages, Veteran Motor Cars, Hand Carts, Wagons, Drays, Trollies, Romany Caravans, Traction Engine Living Wagons, Bicycles, Artillery Pieces, Wheelbarrows, Traps and Wagonettes. Most also forge out iron work for the vehicles and make Iron Gates and Railings.
Some also make and supply Mill Parts for Mill Wrights and private individuals, bespoke furniture (mostly oak tables), make and erect Oak road side finger posts and Ash framing parts to pattern for motor car bodies. One supplies and fits solid rubber tyres for Carriage wheels and Victorian Motor Cars.

Their craft is now mainly confined to restoration work and living museums, a poignant reminder of these highly skilled craftsman who lived the wood they crafted.

The Future
In the second half of the 20th century Wheelwright "training" faded away due to a lack of demand for new wooden wheels. In the UK as in other countries the skills were kept alive by small businesses, museums, societies and trusts such as The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (USA) and The Countryside Agency (UK) amongst others.

With thanks to the Worshipful company of Wheelwright's in London (UK) there is a flourishing (Government backed) apprenticeship scheme running from 2013.

Colonial Williamsburg (USA) has an ongoing apprenticeship program and has recently taken on new apprentices (2016).
