This Thursday we featured action from the 2020 RSM Classic, a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour schedule being played at the Sea Island Golf Club in Saint Simons Island, Georgia. We divided the top 30 golfers into three groups of 10, and to win we had to predict which group would shoot the lowest score of the day, i.e. Round 1. Our choices — Group 1, 2, 3, or The Field.
Here are the top scorers at the end of the opening round…
Camilo Villegas -6
Matt Wallace -6
Rory Sabbatini -5
Peter Malnati -5
Cameron Tringale -5
It’s an annual tradition for the PGA Tour to tumble toward the Atlantic Coast after the Masters, and players who didn’t opt for rest packed up their things and headed to Sea Island Resort in Georgia. The RSM Classic is a full-field open with the maximum 156-player field which is possible at this time of year because every golfer will play the Seaside Course and the Plantation Course once each before the 36-hole cut. When the low 65 and ties are determined, only Seaside will be utilized for the third and final rounds.
Matt Wallace and Camilo Villegas share the early lead by firing matching 6-under 64s in windy conditions to open the week. The Englishman Wallace drained a 30-footer for par on his final hole at the Seaside Course to maintain his position atop the leaderboard. Wallace's 64 marks his lowest on the PGA Tour as he searches for his first win stateside. He's a four-time winner on the European Tour. Villegas, whose last win came at the 2014 Wyndham Championship, later joined Wallace at 6-under by birdieing his final hole of the day. They hold a one-shot lead over eight golfers, including Rory Sabbatini, Peter Malnati and Cameron Tringale, who all opened with 65s.
For our purposes, The Field swept the board on Day 1, with not only the two players tied for the lead at 6-under, but also the eight other players tied for third with 5-under So I’m going to skip walking us though the tie-breaker this time and just say that The Field was the winner
