A Russian speed skater dedicated his country's first medal of the Winter Olympics to his compatriots who have been banned from the Games in "such a hard and unfair way".

BBC Gracenote Winter Olympic Prediction

"Australia is set to achieve its best ever Winter Olympic run with a total of four medals (2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze). The country won its first Winter Olympic medal in Lillehammer in 1994. Freestyle skier Britteny Cox and snowboarder Scott James have the best chances of winning gold for Australia in PyeongChang."

Well... I will be cheering on the Aussies as long as they aren't going against the USA. The same with Canada.

But in the end, what I'm really cheering for is World Record type performances. It's really fun to watch the best, performing the best.

Bit of an odd fact. Something like the Jamaica Bobsled team. I live near Ocala, Florida which is about 75 miles north of Disney World. Not the hot spot for Winter sports (unless you count golf, swimming or sunbathing). To have an athlete from here in the Winter Olympics is, let's say, Unusual. This year we have three. Article below gives the background.

"It is not surprising Florida doesn’t produce an abundance of Winter Olympic athletes, considering there is no winter here. However, the state did manage five athletes for this upcoming Olympics, three of them are long track speed skaters from Ocala, Florida.

Why on earth does Ocala produce speed skaters?

According to a report by Yahoo Sports, Renee Hildebrand is the reason. Renee started out teaching inline skating and got to be very proficient at the skills and techniques. Unfortunately, there are no Olympic medals given out for inline skating. Some of her top inline skaters made the jump to long track speedskating–which takes place on ice—with hopes of a gold medal.

Renee now has three Olympic Athletes representing the US in long track speedskating. Joey Mantia and Brittany Bowe both trained with Renee in Ocala before leaving for the Midwest to train on the ice. They both competed at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

The newest member of the trio from Ocala is Erin Jackson. Erin has only been competing in long track skating for four months. She was an 11-time inline skating World Champion, her success in that sport has translated quickly onto the ice. Erin will also be the first US African American Women to make the US Olympic speed skating team.

Ocala still doesn’t have an indoor facility to train these world class athletes. The training takes place at Skate-A-way South in Ocala, whose website promotes kids birthdays and an on-site DJ."

Maybe this doesn't qualify for Ripley's Believe It Or Note, but it's close.

It never ceases to amaze me when winter Olympic athletes come from warm weather climates.
This year Ecuador, Eritrea, Malaysia, Nigeria, and Singapore are participating for the first time.

I love hearing the stories (like yours above) that provides a backdrop on how they got there in the first place.

OLYMPIC CONTEST #3

TEAM FIGURE SKATING

Earlier today, the field was cut down from 10 teams to 5 as we move to the final events that will lead to the Team Figure Skating Gold Medal

The remaining 5 teams and their current point total:
• 1. Canada (45 points)
• 2. Olympic Athletes from Russia (39 points)
• 3. United States (36 points)
• 4. Italy (35 points)
• 5. Japan (32 points)

Canada has an almost insurmountable lead at this point.
The Russian athletes would need the Canadians to make some huge mistakes while performing perfectly. The US needs a miracle, while Italy and Japan need some breaks just to get a bronze.
So… guessing who will get the gold is WAY TOO easy.

What is it?
This contest, you will need to predict the correct winners of ALL THREE medals.

How do you play?
