LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Coming off a campaign in which he paced all American League rookies in starts, strikeouts and innings pitched, Jordan Montgomery has all but secured his place in the rotation, manager Aaron Boone said.
Montgomery, whose next start will come on Sunday against the Marlins, has limited opponents to one run on five hits in 8 2/3 Grapefruit League innings (1.04 ERA). Boone said on Friday that he sees the fifth rotation spot as belonging to Montgomery.
"I viewed him as very much a front-runner for that spot," Boone said. "We're really excited about not only the year he put together last year, but where we think he can continue to go. When I look at him, I look at him as one of our starters."
Montgomery, 25, will pitch alongside Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray and CC Sabathia in the rotation. Montgomery went 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA in 29 starts for New York last season, striking out 144 in 155 1/3 innings.
Boone said that with Montgomery locked in as a starter, the Yankees are transitioning Chad Green back to the bullpen role he served last season. Green has started twice this spring, working 3 2/3 frames, and is projected to provide the Yanks with a valuable multi-inning reliever.
"We feel about as good as any team in Major League Baseball about our 'pen," Boone said. "If we have the lead after five or six, we feel really good about it based upon who we have down there. We have a lot of guys that we feel can come in and put out fires in the middle of innings."
Prior to Friday's game against the Braves, the Yankees made three cuts from big league camp. Right-handers Albert Abreu and Jonathan Loaisiga were optioned to Class A Tampa, and infielder Thairo Estrada was optioned to Double-A Trenton. Abreu (appendix) and Estrada (gunshot wound) have not appeared in game action this spring. Loaisiga pitched a scoreless inning.

Of course it had to go this way. After Australia dominated in Durban, history demanded that South Africa come back as potently in the second Test at Port Elizabeth.
Even throughout the first day, the game swung wildly. One moment, we were eyeing off the highest visiting scores at the ground, and Lindsay Hasset's 167 was looking slim. The next, a whole Australian team was struggling to pass it.
Australia began its work on a lively pitch, defended 13 overs for 18 sensible runs, ransacked the next 13 overs for 80, then lost 10 wickets for a further 145.
David Warner threatened to wreak destruction with the bat, before Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi made good on their promise with the ball.
The end result was 243 all out for Australia, before South Africa reached 1-39 at stumps.
Should South Africa make good its advantage, it will be another episode in what these teams do. In 2011, the series crashed one way in Cape Town, slewed the other at the Wanderers, then left spectators dry when they were thirsting for a decider.
In 2014, the third match was reintroduced, and became a classic in its own right, decided by some Ryan Harris brilliance with a couple of overs to go.
Whatever the hypotheses as to why, these series produce great contests. The two teams are like dust: You can sweep them away in one moment, but they will rise up after you are done.
With live grass on the wicket, clouds overhead, and rain about, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was glad to lose the toss. Steve Smith went the Australian Route 1 and chose to bat.
The reasoning is that you can battle through a tough first period, then prosper. This Test saw it happen in fast forward. Vernon Philander seamed the ball a mile, Rabada operated at pace, but Warner and Cameron Bancroft bunkered down for the first hour.
Then in four overs after the drinks break, they smashed 44 runs, and South Africa had no answers.
Warner drove two boundaries through cover, so third slip moved to fill the gap. Next ball he edged through third slip, so back the catcher came. Back went Warner, driving a brace and then another four through cover. All this in one Rabada over.

The fastest woman in the Pacific won't compete in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

When the Papua New Guinea team marches into the stadium at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Australia in April, there will be one notable absentee: the track queen of the Pacific, Toea Wisil.
The sprinter has been disciplined for unsporting actions at the Pacific Mini Games in Port Vila three months ago, and after relations with her coaches in Australia broke down, she is back in PNG, trying to get her athletics program back on course.
It is the latest twist in a career that has seen one of the most talented track athletes ever produced in the Pacific never quite reach the heights that a succession of coaches have said she is capable of achieving.
Wisil won a hatful of gold medals at successive Pacific Games, and just last year she became the first athlete from PNG to take out the Australian sprint double, winning both the 100 metres and 200 metres at the national championships.
Those performances should have been the catalyst to go to the next level, and under the watchful eyes of husband and wife coaching team, Tony and Alison Fairweather, one of her key targets was the 100 metres final at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
But instead relations between athlete and coach began to deteriorate, Wisil's training regime began to tail off, and after a poor performance at the World Championships in London, matters came to a head.

Coaches say that Wisil has the ability to be a 10.8 seconds runner (in the 100 metres).

Thank you rchhuon99 for reporting the results.
And yes, ALL THREE TEAMS LOST as expected. While rchhuon may argue that the Lakers didn't get slaughtered, they did lose by 9 points
The Grizzlies managed to get slaughtered by 17 points, but those pathetic Atlanta Hawks led the way tonight as they sleepwalked their way to a 25 point slaughter. The final was 112 to 87, and as rchhoun pointed out, they got slaughtered the worst! The refs should have called the slaughter rule at half time
7 people correctly picked Atlanta and will get 143 WRZ$ each as their share of the pool.
But, wellwhocares was our big winner tonight, not only guessing Atlanta, but being the only one to hit the 25 point spread as well...
and that earns an additional 250 WRZ$
WELL DONE!
The other 6 people who had Atlanta:
Me
WordDiva
accountant1usa
EmpressReece
NeneJa
9trogue
So congratulations to all our winners.
Pay outs will happen shortly.
We look forward to seeing you all again in future contests.
