SPORTS CENTER CONTEST #379 FRIDAY UNDERDOGS For our Friday Underdogs edition, we looked at one of the Australian Open Mens Singles Semifinals, and two NBA games that were all total mismatches. All we had to do to win was predict how many of the underdogs (in bold and red) would win — 0, 1, 2, or 3.
GAME ONENovak Djokovic vs. Lucas Pouille
Novak Djokovic left Lucas Pouille in a heap after three mercifully quick sets to reach his seventh Australian Open final – where he has never lost. In winning 6-0 6-2 6-2 the world No 1 was as ruthless as in any win since his year of years, 2011. He started the match with an ace and drilled 24 clean winners past his bewildered opponent in only an hour and 23 minutes.
GAME TWOLos Angeles Clippers vs. Chicago Bulls
With the Bulls leading 97-96, Patrick Beverley blocked 7-footer Lauri Markkanen’s shot in the paint, which led to a four-point play by Williams to give the Clippers a 100-97 lead. Zach LaVine cut the Clippers’ lead to 100-99 with 1:26 left, but Beverley was there again for the Clippers with a runner in the lane to extend the lead 102-99 with 37.8 seconds remaining. Lou Williams had 31 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for his first career triple-double, and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Chicago Bulls 106-101 on Friday night.
GAME THREEPhoenix Suns at Denver Nuggets
Paul Millsap scored 20 points and the Denver Nuggets overcame Nikola Jokic's one-game suspension to race past Phoenix 132-95 Friday night sending the short-handed Suns to their seventh straight loss. Jokic, the Nuggets' leader in points, rebounds and assists, was banished for a night by the NBA for leaving the bench during an altercation in Utah two nights earlier.
Of the three matchups, the underdog lost in all three games.
