Australian women win One Day International in India . . .

Image

A fine all-round performance from Ellyse Perry has helped Australia wrap up its one-day international series against India in Vadodara.

The visitors took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series after beating India by 60 runs on Thursday.

Opener Nicole Bolton (84 from 88 balls) and Perry (70 from 70) were the fulcrum of the Australian innings, as it amassed a strong 9-287.

Beth Mooney chipped in with a quick-fire 56 off just 40 balls.

Should England Boycott the World Cup in Russia?

England coach Gareth Southgate says his team should go to the World Cup despite Russia being blamed for poisoning a former spy in Britain.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has ordered politicians and royals not to attend the World Cup after former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter were found unconscious after being exposed to a nerve agent.

But the Government has not ordered the national soccer team to boycott the June 14-July 15 soccer tournament.

Southgate says it is a "serious matter" and "developing very quickly".

But based on the briefings he has received, he said: "We are preparing to go to the World Cup. There is no doubt in my mind that is what we should be doing."

MARCH MADNESS SQUARES

ROUND 1 - DAY ONE WINNERS

It's been a long day, but a fun one. For the early games, I was at a Sports Bar with a trillion large screen TV's, with all the current games on. My friends and I are all in a ton of pools, so the end of each game got really interesting.

As a reminder, here are the numbers and the payoff grid.

SPORTS CENTER CONTEST #17
MARCH MADNESS DAY ONE UPSETS

The games pretty much went as expected as the day rolled along.
No. 11 Loyola of Chicago (the bar here in Chicago was going nuts for this one) beat No. 5 Miami for the first upset.

But it wasn't until the late games that things started to really heat up.
The No. 13 seed in the South Region, Buffalo, simply trounced the No. 4 seed Arizona 89 - 68
This 21 point defeat was totally unexpected. Arizona was one of the teams that many (including me) thought might make a run for the Final Four. Well, so much for that
And, we had a No. 9 seed, Alabama, take out the No. 8 seed, Virginia Tech, in the East Region.
(If you are interested in all the final scores, see the above post)

So... The people that took LESS are the winners.

The Masters: Tiger Woods is bookies' favourite for Augusta, but could he win the green jacket?

Image

He couldn't, could he?

A 42-year-old with a back fused from four separate operations, who last won a golf tournament five years ago and, as recently as last year, was publicly questioning if he would ever return to the professional game, has this week been installed as the bookies' favourite to win The Masters.

It sounds improbable, but the Tiger Woods bandwagon is rolling. And gathering pace.

Whether it's being propelled by nostalgic clinging to the past or a cold-eyed assessment of present form is open to debate.
The truth is almost certainly a mesh of the two — the romantics willing an ageing champion to win one last battle are being offered just enough evidence to allow them to justify that optimism.

After a second placed finish at last week's US PGA Tour event in Tampa and an opening round 68 at the Arnold Palmer Classic, Woods is a shorter price than defending champion Sergio Garcia, world number one Dustin Johnson and the rest to claim a fifth green jacket at Augusta.

His most recent 18 holes included a 71-yard putt that spoke to another era, a golden time for Woods long clouded by time and controversy. There was the broad, ice-white grin. The fist pump. The delirious fans willing the ball in the hole.

"I played with Tiger at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas [in December] and I could tell straight away that he was more ready, had worked more on his game, looked healthier and was keen to compete again," Henrik Stenson, four shots up on Woods and leading the Arnold Palmer, said. "It was a noticeable difference to me, compared to the other [failed comebacks] when he hadn't been healthy enough."

We shall see... Remember, when talking about bookie odds, it has more to do with the bettors perception than the actual odds of an event occurring. Bookies will keep changing the odds to balance each side of their "book" so they don't lose money if one "event" vs. the other wins. Just because a Bookie has somebody as a favorite doesn't mean that the person is actually the player with the best chance to win ;)
There is probably a lot of "TIGER DESIRE" driving his being named the favorite. Remember, he hasn't won anything yet.
