Pj... I know how doctored balls work in Baseball, giving the pitcher the advantage by adding more movement to their pitches.
Is it the same for Cricket. Or is there some other advantage to be gained?????

John, the big difference between baseball and cricket (ball-wise, that is) is that in baseball the ball is replaced instantly if the umpire sees that it's been damaged. Batters can and do ask the umpires to inspect the ball. However, in cricket, the ball is supposed to remain in play, and the gradual deterioration of the ball (as well as the pitch) is considered an element of the game. So, although ball-tampering in baseball has a long history, the practice has more possibilities in cricket.

The unlawful alteration of the surface or seam of a ball on the field, to affect its motion when bowled.

Under Law 41, subsection 3 of the Laws of Cricket, the ball may be polished without the use of an artificial substance, may be dried with a towel if it is wet, and have mud removed from it under supervision; all other actions which alter the condition of the ball are illegal. These are usually taken to include rubbing the ball on the ground, scuffing with a fingernail or other sharp object, or tampering with the seam of the ball.

Using spit and/or sweat is common and, for practitioners of swing bowling, integral. The moisture gained from spit or sweat when combined with polishing, smooths out one half of the ball which in turn allows air to pass over one side of the ball more quickly than over the other. When bowled correctly, a bowler can get the ball to move from one side to the other through the air. Also, it is common for bowlers to rub the ball against their clothing to dry or polish it, as seen in most cricket matches.

Thanks... I really didn't know that they only used a single ball. In Baseball, they use 60 or so different balls a game (if I remember correctly)

Thanks for that input, Diva. John, it's very surprising for baseball fans to see cricket bowlers rubbing the ball on their pants. It leaves a red stain in test matches (where a red ball is used). However, as Diva writes, there are strict rules about doing anything else. As in baseball pitching, a doctored ball can be made to do strange things by a skillful practitioner . . .

I started watching it when I was a kiddie in my dad’s lap and then later on sitting together with him when he was watching the Match

I think I used to think the ballers were feeling itchy with all the heat and running around when they used to rub their balls on pants, and didn’t want to do it openly (things kids think) I realised it at some point later they actually rubbing to polish them maybe when I was 4.5/5 I think

John, the issue here that's of even more significance than ball-tampering (which has gone on for a very long time now, here and there, in all countries) is that the cheating was planned and organised by the Australian team leadership. If it had been an attempt by an individual bowler to gain advantage, it would have been upsetting enough, but in this case it's brought the entire Australian cricket team into disrepute. Although not quite in the same league as MLB's 1919 'Black Sox' cheating scandal, it has the possibility to loom nearly as large over the sport in Australia. Ball-tampering . . . hmmm. Organised cheating by the team leadership . . . no way! This is going to hurt Steve Smith image forever, and he's really one of the greats in today' game.

It’s not a one time thing, Steve Smith has been doing that for year now he did it during the India tour as well, I remember Virat Kohli being mad as a hornets nest due to the same.

He influenced his other team members to do so as well, which is wrong on so many levels with him being a Captain...I think he should be given a life ban for such disgusting behaviour!

I thank god when I met the Aussie Cricket team years back in person due to a event, Adam Gilchrist was the captain now there was a true sportsman...
