For this Thursday’s contest we were at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, a professional golf tournament being held January 23–26 at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California, in the early part of the PGA season known as the "West Coast Swing.” We divided the top 21 golfers into three groups of 7, and to win we had to predict which group would shoot the lowest score of the Day, i.e. Round 1. Our choices — Group 1, 2, 3, or The Field.
Here are the top scorers at the end of the opening round…
Keegan Bradley -6
Sebastian Cappelen -6
Byeong Hun An -5
Joel Dahmen -5
Kevin Tway -5
Rory McIlroy -5
Xinjun Zhang -5
Matthew NeSmith -5
Sungjae Im -5
Bubba Watson -5
A loaded field at Torrey Pines should lead to some fantastic action over the course of four rounds in California, what with Tiger Woods making his first appearance since the calendar has turned, and the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and many of the world's best golfers trolling the California course.
Sebastian Cappelen and Keegan Bradley both shot a 6-under 66 to lead a group of 20 players within two strokes of the lead after an eventful opening round in the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Cappelen and Bubba Watson are the only players on the top-10 of the leaderboard to have played the first round on the South Course, which predictably carried a higher scoring average than the North Course. Bradley and Cappelen shared the lead at the end of Round 1, with eight players tied at 5 under.
With two golfers tied for the lead we used our standard tie-breaking method…
Note: In the current tournament set-up, players split the first 36 holes between the North and South Courses, then play the final 36 holes on the South Course. So although the par for each hole might be different between the two courses, our standard tie-breaking method comparing hole by hole performance still applies.
Working backwards from the 18th hole…both Bradley (North Course) and Cappelen (South Course) were on par on the 18th, however, Bradley was also on par on the 17th whereas Cappelen bogeyed. So, Bradley won the tie-breaker, which means The Field was the winner. For the purposes of this contest, it didn’t really matter which one of them was the “official” leader since they both feature as part of The Field but at Sports Center, we always like to go the whole nine yards.
