IPL 2018: Kings XI Punjab vs Delhi Daredevils Preview

Image

Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils have never won the IPL trophy in the past ten seasons. The match is expected to be hotly contested as both sides will be eager to begin their campaign with a win. Led by Ravichandran Ashwin, KXIP are hoping to make a strong start to their campaign, while Delhi Daredevils, under the new leadership of Gautam Gambhir, will also hope to begin their campaign on a winning note.

Delhi Daredevils have roped in English pacer Liam Plunkett to replace Kagiso Rabada. Liam Plunkett replaces the injured South African. Plunkett has featured in 13 Tests, 65 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 15 T20 Internationals for England so far. This will be Plunkett’s first stint in the IPL. He was picked from the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP) list.

Sehwag made this point while responding to a question during a press conference ahead of KXIP's opening IPL match against Delhi Daredevils on Sunday. Asked what he expects of Ravichandran Ashwin's captaincy of KXIP this season, Sehwag said, "I have played with him and I know the kind of mindset he has. He is the right choice to be captain of Punjab team. Talking about the KXIP team, Sehwag said, "We have the best team, if I compare last ten years. The team is a balanced one with right mix of Indian and foreign players. "We have a set of players who believe in dealing in sixes and boundaries, they don't believe in singles," Sehwag joked as Chris Gayle was seated next to him.

Kings XI Punjab head coach Brad Hodge feels that presence of multiple superstars makes their team a "dangerous unit" going into the 11th edition of Indian Premier League.

"If you look at the difference of this side compared to the past squads, I think there is definitely a rise in standard. We've got a lot of superstars, a lot of match-winners, which makes our team extremely dangerous, which should be good for future," said Hodge, prior to their opening encounter against Delhi Daredevils.

This one will be anyone's game

IPL 2018: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Preview

Image

Led by new captain Dinesh Karthik, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will look to continue their good run against Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). KKR beat RCB in both their matches last season. Kohli's team was bowled out a mere 49 against KKR in their last meeting which was also RCB's lowest score in the tournament's history. KKR captain Karthik has played for five franchises in IPL - Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Lions - in 152 matches across 10 seasons before joining KKR.

RCB has the stronger lineup on paper than that of the Knights, however, KKR also has some genuine match-winners in their ranks who can decimate oppositions. Mitchell Starc’s injury has definitely weakened them, but despite that, the team is a brute force to reckon with. Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had a horrendous run in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League and finished as the cellar dweller. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were well and good until their stutter against the Mumbai Indians in the playoffs.

In present scenario however it may sound ambitious. Kohli’s stature as a captain and batsman has grown manifold in last one year and the Indian skipper will look to end the season on a high with the elusive IPL title. Kohli and AB de Villiers will once again form a strong top-order with 2,212 runs together in 53 innings, including seven century stands. Traditionally a batting-heavy unit, RCB have showed the urgency in tweaking the side by letting go stars such as Chris Gayle and Shane Watson.

Royal Challengers Bangalore are strong on paper, but the Knights are no pushover.

Australian golfer Marc Leishman has charged up the leaderboard to keep pace with a red-hot Patrick Reed in the second round at the US Masters.

With Reed threatening to run away from the field on day two at Augusta, Leishman did his best to reel in the American with a five-under-par 67 on Friday.

The 34-year-old Australian sits at seven-under-par and two shots behind Reed, who rattled off nine birdies and three bogeys in his 66 which elevated him to nine under.

The pair emerged from the pack on an eventful day two, with 2016 British Open winner Henrik Stenson (70) third at five under.

Overnight leader Jordan Spieth suffered an early collapse but steadied the ship on the back nine to card a 74 to remain in the hunt at four under; the 2015 Masters winner sharing fourth with four-time major winner Rory McIlroy (71).

Aussie Campbell Sisters 1-2 at CG Women's Swimming 50 Metre Free

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-07/c ... on/9629882

Cate Campbell has won her first Commonwealth Games gold in the women's 50m freestyle and her second on the Gold Coast.

Campbell, who had anchored Australia to a world record and victory in the 4x100m freestyle relay on Thursday night, touched the wall in a Games record and personal best time of 23.78 seconds.

Her younger sister Bronte, a former world champion in the event, finished equal second with Canada's Taylor Ruck, with both stopping the clock in 24.26.

Campbell fed off the parochial Southport crowd, who had let their allegiance be known as the finalists stood behind the blocks.

"When the crowd started chanting 'Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!' just before the start, [I thought] this is goose bump stuff," Campbell said.

While public expectation is always high at a home Games, Campbell said she was having no trouble handling the pressure.

"That's what we thrive on and the thing I'll probably miss the most when we retire," she said.

"As much as you hate it, you love it at the same time — it's a love-hate relationship."

Campbell is the fifth Australian to win the women's 50m freestyle gold at the Games and the first since Yolane Kukla topped the podium in 2010.

Campbell later won her semi-final of the 50m butterfly in 25.56, to qualify second fastest behind fellow Australian Madeline Groves (25.54) for Sunday night's final.

As Tia-Clair Toomey stepped off the medal dais, having won gold for Australia in weightlifting, the emotional turmoil she had been experiencing in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games began to hit home.

Toomey had entered the Games grieving the loss of her 17-year-old cousin Jade, who died following a car accident on the Sunshine Coast last week.

Amid the pain that had gripped her family she knew "she had a job to do" and that was winning the gold medal in the women's 58-kilogram class.

But after that job was completed successfully with a dramatic victory at the Carrara Sports Arena on Friday night, the impact of losing someone so close to her made Toomey reflect on what really mattered most.

"As much as Jade was on my mind and the emotion was rolling, I knew that I needed to still stay focused to represent Australia to the best of my ability," Toomey said.

It was Toomey's final lift of the competition that clinched the gold medal, an effort of 114kg in the clean and jerk enough to pip Canada's Tali Darsigny by one kilogram on the overall standings.

The Rio Olympian, who is based in Gladstone with her husband Shane where they own a gym, was proud she could perform under pressure, while crediting the support of her family as a key reason behind her triumph.
