THURSDAY BEST SCORE For this Thursday’s contest, we were at the
2020 Genesis Invitational today, a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, held annually in at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, and often the concluding event of the tour's "West Coast Swing,” before the tour moves east to Florida. We divided the top 27 golfers into three groups of 9, and to win we had to predict which group would shoot the lowest score of the Day, i.e. Round 1. Our choices — Group 1, 2, 3, or The Field.

Harold Varner III -4Kuchar shot a 7-under-par 64 in the opening round of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club to take the lead over a chasing pack that included both leading men (Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods) and bit-part players (Russell Henley, Wyndham Clark). Kuchar’s score bettered last year’s first round by four strokes. Kuchar hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation during his first round, and had a good round of putting, with no misses on putts within 10 feet. He finished his round in 1st at 7 under; Russell Henley, Kyoung-Hoon Lee, Wyndham Clark, Adam Schenk and Harold Varner III are tied for 2nd at 4 under. Another chunk of players are at 3 under -- including world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, Australia's Jason Day, Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau -- with Tiger Woods finishing alongside more than a dozen players another stroke back. Among others at 2 under are Brooks Koepka and England's Justin Rose.
