Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony Criticised

After a closing ceremony that barely focused on athletes and featured long, rambling speeches, Gold Coast Commonwealth Games chairman Peter Beattie has admitted organisers got it wrong.

The athletes entered Carrara Stadium before the television broadcast and were barely shown to TV audiences as they stood in darkness on the fringe of the stage. There were reports many began leaving the venue less than an hour into the event.

The ceremony also featured at least seven speeches by dignitaries, including Mr Beattie, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, and the Lord Mayor of Birmingham — the 2022 Commonwealth Games host city.

Channel Seven's own commentators, Johanna Griggs and Basil Zempilas, launched into an extraordinary attack on the ceremony immediately after it finished, saying they were "furious".

Mr Beattie tweeted an apology on Monday morning. "The speeches were too many and too long. I was part of that and I acknowledge it. Again, we got that wrong," he wrote.

Ski Season Begins in Australia

Winter arrived early in Canberra at the weekend, with temperatures dropping sharply and winds of almost 100km/h buffeting the capital.

The ski fields also got a healthy dusting of snow, with 10cm falling at Perisher overnight on Saturday as the temperature dropped to minus 1, while 5cm of snow coated the ground at Thredbo.

Thredbo communications manager Susie Diver said the weekend's snow was a great way to start the school holidays.

"We've had a real run of sunny days lately, so to get that snowy change was awesome," she said.

I just ran across an "UNCLEAR OF CONCEPT AWARD WINNER" when searching the odds for setting up a Tuesday Contest.

One British betting site is offering odds for "a draw" for NHL playoff games.
So just for grins, I started going through the process (but never finished), and sure enough, they were more than willing to take my bet for such an outcome for ANY of the Tuesday NHL games. While they were indeed providing very good odds... odds that would make the payout quite HUGE... one simple problem.
NHL playoff games can NOT end in a draw.


Unlike the regular season where games can end in a draw/tie... NHL playoff games keep adding 20 minute overtime periods UNTIL SOMEBODY SCORES A GOAL.
So... maybe I should set up a betting web site and accept bets on draws for NHL playoff games. Talk about easy money with no risk

Channel Seven was aware athletes would be largely snubbed from the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony, despite claiming later to have been as shocked by the decision as the millions who watched it.

The Seven Network stoked anger among viewers with an attack on the Games organising committee and host broadcaster after a torrent of Twitter abuse throughout last night's event.

I did have a college buddy who used to hang out in bars and make bets with suckers who didn't know the game they were watching on the Bar's TV wasn't a live sporting event and was being shown on tape delay
