London Marathon runners sweat through record-breaking heat . . .

London Marathon runners sweltered through the event's hottest year on record with the mercury reaching 24.1 degrees Celsius.

Extra water, ice, showers and medical stations were made available to runners through the 42.2-kilometre course; however, water did run out at some points during the race.

Sunday's weather beat the marathon's previous highest temperature of 22.7C set in 1996, which was almost overtaken in 2007 when it peaked at 22.6C.

As the forecast had already predicted to surpass the record, participants were warned to reconsider dressing up in fancy costumes.

"Anyone wearing fancy dress, look at whether it's appropriate in the conditions. If you think it's not appropriate, don't do it in fancy dress," race director Hugh Brasher said last week. People are urged to wear sunscreen and appropriate clothing. Listen to your body. Change your race plan."

Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge won the main event for the third time, completing the course in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 27 seconds.

NEW YORK -- Years from now, if Gleyber Torres develops into the star the Yankees think he'll become, you can go ahead and tell people you remember his Major League debut. Just don't forget to mention Miguel Andujar's name.

Sunday may have been Gleyber Day in the Bronx, the first Major League game for a 21-year-old ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 5 prospect in the game. But while Torres had a quiet debut, going 0-for-4, the 23-year-old Andujar continued an impressive week with four hits in a 5-1 Yankees win over the Blue Jays. New York finished the weekend with a four-game series victory.

"I've known Miggy for two years, and I know he can hit," said Torres, who was teammates with Andujar in the 2016 Arizona Fall League. "I'm happy he has had a good week."

It's actually been a week-plus, an important 10 days for Andujar and maybe for the Yankees' future. He had been playing third base in place of the injured Brandon Drury, but through April 12, he was 3-for-28 with no extra-base hits. Meanwhile, the Yankees had Torres playing third base at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Indian Shooters set sights on World Cup

The cream of Indian shooters, fresh from their efforts in the Commonwealth Games, will now set their sights on the season’s second World Cup starting here on Sunday.

For Ravi Kumar, Deepak Kumar, Mehuli Ghosh, Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela, it will be a chance to give a strong start for India in the air rifle events on the opening day of competition.

The World Cup is of considerable significance as it will be the same venue for the World Championship later in the season, that will offer the first set of Olympic quota places. Youngsters like Manu Bhaker and Anish Bhanwala will have a chance to gauge their prowess in a field that will feature shooters from 78 countries.

India will field 38 shooters in rifle, pistol and shotgun, including the ones entered for the MQS section. Since there will be no rifle prone, free pistol and double trap events, Gagan Narang, Chain Singh, Mohd. Asab, Ankur Mittal and Varsha Varman will miss this World Cup.

India had topped the medals table ahead of the US, China, France, Romania, etc., in the last World Cup in Mexico, with four gold, a silver and four bronze medals.

Similarly, in the Junior World Cup in Sydney prior to the CWG, Indian shooters finished second behind China with nine gold, five silver and eight bronze medals.
