Somebody sent me a PM asking to explain what the ODDS mean.
And frankly that's a great question because even some bettors really don't understand them.
So let's give it a try with the Current Figure Skating contest
Disclaimer - We are NOT promoting any illegal form of gambling - simply helping people to understand the information provided so that they can make their selections in the contests (had to do that
In the original post, we gave you the following odds for the top three skaters:
Shoma Uno 6 to 4 (some would have said 3/2)
Yuzura Hanyu 9 to 5
Nathen Chen 3 to 1
Looking at Nathen Chen's 3 to 1, some bettors I know think that means he has a 33% chance to win, or 1 out of 3. But that is incorrect. It really means a 25% chance to win. The math is "add the two numbers (4) and the second number means the predicted occurrence of the event happening. So 1 in 4 or 25%.
Yuzura Hanyu is 9 to 5 which means 5 times out of 14 or 36%. For Shoma, it would 4 times out of 10 or 40%.
Next, you have seen us use plus or minus numbers like we did in The Women's Ski Jumping
Maren Lundby Norway – 250
Sara Takanashi Japan + 550
Daniela Iraschko-Stolz Austria + 1,150
Carina Vogt Germanyh Germany + 1,600
For Lundly, as we have explained before, a minus number means you have to bet 250 to win 100
If it's a plus number, Takanashi, you bet 100 and get 550.
But what does that mean in terms of % chance of winning.
For plus numbers, it's really easy.
+100 means 1to1 or 50%
+200 means 2to1 or 33%
+300 means 3to1 or 25%
+400 means 4to1 or 20%
And on and on and on...
For minus numbers...
-200 means 1to2 odds or 66%
-300 means 1to3 odds or 75%
-400 means 1to4 odds or 80%
For Lundby's -250, that meant 2to5 odds for 71%
See...it's really "simple"
I hope that helps you all make better picks in the future.
And speaking of picks, please remember that we have TWO Olympic Contests running at the moment.
