Five Missing Commonwealth Games Athletes Found

Five of the 24 athletes who went missing from the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast of Australia in April are seeking asylum in Canberra.

The five athletes have applied for and been granted bridging visas, and remain in the country lawfully. Their competition visas expired on Tuesday night.

The group is being assisted by a registered migration agent in the ACT, Liz Huang Hughes-Brown of Welcome Legal. “They are in the process of cooperating with the Department of Home Affairs,” Ms Hughes-Brown said. “Australia has legal obligations not to return any individual to a country where he or she would face persecution or be at risk of significant harm.”

She said the athletes had made claims for protection “which fall within the eligibility criteria for Australia to grant them protection”. The five athletes are among a group of competitors and coaches who went missing from the Commonwealth Games in April. Exact numbers of those that remain in Australia have not been confirmed. It is now believed to be more than 24.
