SPORTS CENTER CONTEST #207

US OPEN UNDERDOGS

The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year. Held from August 27 - September 9 this year, it is played on hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Today was the start of the Round of 64, and we looked at four matches with very obvious underdogs. All we had to do to win was either say YES, if we thought all dogs (in bold and red) would lose or say NO, is we felt one of them could pull off an upset.

Thanks to the updates, we already know the results of most of our matches. Here are the final results…

MEN’S
Rafael Nadal (1) vs. Vasek Pospisil
Image

Defending champion and top seed Rafa Nadal faced Pospisil in their second meeting since 2015. The World #1 broke the Canadian early in the match and raced away with a straight sets win in just over 2 hours.

Juan-Martin Del Potro (3) vs. Denis Kudla
Image

2009 US Open winner, Del Potro faced Kudla who reached this second round by registering his first win at the US Open in five years! The Argentinian had no problems winning their only previous encounter in 2016 and today was no different. An early break of serve in the opening game set the tone for the match and it was Del Potro’s show all the way.

WOMEN’S
Sloane Stephens (3) vs. Anhelina Kalinina
Image

This was the first meeting between defending champion and top seed, Stephens, and World No. 134 Kalinina, who was also making her Grand Slam main draw debut. The Ukrainian did well to take this to three sets but the American had fewer unforced errors and prevailed with only a minor hiccup.

Serena Williams (17) vs. Carina Witthöeft
Image

Six-time champion Serena Williams faced Witthoeft for the first time today. The German crashed out of the top 100 rankings for the first time this year and was never going to be any real competition for Williams, especially not in front of a huge Arthur Ashe crowd cheering for the American. Williams needed just 1 hour and 8 minutes to close it out in straight sets and sent her opponent packing.

Since ALL the underdogs lost, the correct answer was Yes.
