A Pasticceria in Taormina
Overnight, greasy Punchinello
Has whisked away the crusts of daily bread
To give us this gala of marzipan
Modeled fantastically into a sybarite's banquet;
Pineapple and artichoke bristle, lifelike,
The suckling grins clownishly from his platter,
Pasta cascades over the bowl's rim,
And vegetable garlands festoon the rafter.
Graceless, the masquers reel toward the unctuous display;
Its unwholesomeness is broken and shared
In a feast of the superfêted, already awaiting
The women in black, who will jumble
Crumbs, dominoes, and confetti into the ashes,
Shocked by the grotesque finale—
When Punch breaks wind with a carnival bang,
The gross paunch drops to reveal the bones of Lent.
