Tom Hanks introduces 'Diet Cokagne' cocktail and it's creating quite the buzz

Is there anything Tom Hanks can't do?

For those not participating in Dry January, Tom Hanks has a "shamefully good" cocktail to try — but the combination is raising some eyebrows.

The 66-year-old showed off his new creation while appearing on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert", talking about a recent night at Café Carlyle in New York City with his wife, Rita Wilson, when they ordered a celebratory bottle of Champagne.

"I'm not a big drinker," Hank revealed. "So I usually have a Diet Coke because if you didn't have a long enough disco nap, you're going to fall asleep at 11:45."

Hanks goes on to describe the way in which the staff poured the Champagne into flutes as if it was "the last episode of 'The Bachelor,'" prompting him to request a shot of bubbly in his Diet Coke.

Hanks told host Stephen Colbert that everyone at the table told him he was insane — and the reaction from the audience seemed to show that they agreed.

"I said, 'Well, I may be insane, but I want to celebrate the season,'" he said. "So I had a sip of this. Stephen, it was delicious."

Wanting to try the concoction for himself, Colbert pulled out two glasses filled with ice, a can of Diet Coke and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne. Hanks poured the soda into the glasses while noting that he sticks to "diet" sodas due to his Type 2 diabetes.

"What's better (for) Type 2 diabetes than a little shot of champagne in your Diet Coke?" Hanks said, to which the audience burst with laughter.

Image
Tom Hanks may have invented a new cocktail that Stephen Colbert jokingly called an "American Aperol spritz."

Pouring the champagne atop the Coke, Colbert joked, "This is exactly what the folks at Veuve Clicquot intended" and added that the cocktail recipe must also be listed in the Book of Revelation.

Marveling at the light brown, fizzy drink, Colbert said the color reminded him of an "American Aperol spritz," given it's not the notably bright orange of the Italian beverage.

After his first sip, all Colbert could say was the word, "Wow."

"It's really good," Colbert admitted. "It's strangely, strikingly, shamefully good."

When coming up with a name for the drink, Hanks said he combined the words "Diet Coke" with "Champagne" to form "The Diet Cokagne."

But Colbert may have invented the best name of all: "We have the Tom Collins, we have the Tom Hanks."

The cocktail also made an appearance on TODAY with Hoda and Jenna on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager just had to try it for themselves.

"It's kind of good," Hoda said after a sip.

"It tastes like a Coke float. It tastes like a cherry Coke, doesn't it?" Jenna asked Hoda.

The two agreed that the drink tastes like a classic Coke, but less sweet due to the Champagne.

"Tom Hanks can do anything," Jenna added.

(This reminds me of my wedding reception. The hubby is a bit of a wine snob, so he selected quality (read: expensive) wine for the reception. He was horrified to catch his father pouring half a glass of the vintage Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz and topping it up with Fanta! I can still see the look on his face  )

Over 100 New Nazca Lines Discovered in Peru Designed by Ancient People

Image

In a major archaeological discovery, a team of Peruvian and Japanese researchers have discovered 168 new geoglyphs in the ancient Nazca Plain in Peru, near to the enormous glyphs that remain as mysterious as they are famous.

Found during 2 years of aerial surveys, their discovery led to the creation of a new archaeological park to protect them.

The famous Nazca Lines are enormous depictions of humans and animals carved into the ground of a flat plain by ancient peoples. Their monumental scale was only discovered after flight, when a pair of eyes could be high enough to see the whole two dimensional image.

The originals measure hundreds of yards, but the new discoveries are smaller. Jorge Olano, head archaeologist for the Nazca Lines research program, said the new geoglyphs averaged between two and six meters (6.56 to 19.7 feet) in length.

They were made by removing the black stone of the plain to uncover its white soil below, and line series of ancient trails.

Masato Sakai of Yamagata University and his team of Japanese archaeologists have been working in the area since 2004, and this is not their first discovery.

By 2018, the team had identified 190 geoglyphs by collecting images from aerial surveys and drones, which when added together with this latest batch makes for a total of 358 previously-unknown geoglyphs discovered by the Japanese-Peruvian team.

Believed to have been carved between 100 BCE and 200 CE, they depict humans, camelids such as llamas, alpacas and guanacos, birds, orcas, felines, and snakes, and at times can look almost childish.

Their purpose, as well as their larger cousins which make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is unknown.

Dad hilariously revolts on his family’s chatty group text string: ‘Can’t live with this pressure’

Technostress is real, people.

Image

If your family group chat is stressing you out, just copy and paste the message below.

“I can’t keep up with the pressure of always having to lol or like or heart everyone’s random thoughts, pics and amusements,” Dr. Thomas D’Orazio, an eye surgeon, texted his wife and two daughters on Jan. 16.

“For all future texts: I love them, laugh at them, or like them, unless it’s bad, then I dislike them. In perpetuity. I can’t live with this pressure. I’m out.”

“When I read it, I burst out laughing,” D’Orazio’s 23-year-old daughter, Allison, tells TODAY.com. “He's hilarious." And the internet agrees: the text went viral with nearly 400,000 likes after Allison shared it on Twitter.

D’Orazio, 51, signed his epic note, “a grumpy guy from the pre-cellphone era,” but Allison cropped that part out of the screenshot.

Allison, a graduate student at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, suspects she’s the one who pushed her dad over the edge.

“I was sending pictures of every single stitch I was doing on a sewing project,” she reveals. But Allison’s mom, Amy, and her sister, Alexa, 19, aren’t exactly quiet on the chat.

“The three of us are very extroverted and send random stuff all day long,” Allison explains. “He’s so kind and and engaged with our lives — he's like the perfect human being — and I think it was stressing him out that he can't respond to all the messages.”

Allison notes that her dad didn't actually leave the chat.

"It was just a bluff!" she says.

Meanwhile, comments continue to pour in on Allison's Twitter post.

"Dude network burnout is a real thing," one person tweeted. "Some humans were never meant to have this much contact this quickly with this many people. I blow off easily 3/4ths of the daily messages I get on various platforms because I just can’t stay glued to my phone all day every day."

Added another, "True story, in the early days of texting, my father-in-law thought LOL meant 'Lots of Love.' So you’d say something like 'Sad news to report, our beloved pet Rusty died' and he’d respond with 'Oh no, LOL!'"

achieved a speed of 224 mph. Photo courtesy of Guinness World Records

Jan. 19 (UPI) -- A man broke a Guinness World Record when his homemade drone reached a speed of 224 mph during a flight in Arizona.

Guinness World Records confirmed Ryan Lademann broke the record for the fastest ground speed by a battery-powered remote-controlled quadcopter when he made his official attempt in Scottsdale.

Lademann said his drone, dubbed the XLR V3, was the result of multiple prototypes made using 3D printers and his hand construction skills.

Guinness World Records rules required the XLR V3 to make two runs in opposite directions during level flight. The top speeds of both runs were then averaged together to set the record at 224 mph. Lademann said the top speed during his fastest run was 235.68 mph.

Ontario boy’s hot chocolate stand raises more than $6K for SickKids Hospital

Image

For over a month 10-year-old Cohen Lane stood outside in the frigid temperatures, braving wind and rain to sell hot chocolate and raise money for Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.

The results are sweet.

On Tuesday, Cohen is going to present SickKids with a cheque for $6,130.90—a far cry from his original goal of raising $350 over the holiday season.

“I’m happy,” he said in a phone call to CTV News Toronto from his home in Whitby, Ont.

Cohen came up with the idea for the fundraiser on his own, his mother said. He designed the stand, which featured not just hot chocolate but various toppings and alternative tea options, as well as a QR code so that those without cash could still make donations.

He even set up a seating area where people could enjoy their beverage every Saturday and Sunday between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Neighbours helped set up canopies when the weather turned sour, and classmates took turns manning a pop-up station at Cohen’s school—helping raise $500 in the process.

“We brought the entire setup into the school, and then every class came down and donated,” Cohen’s mother Karina Oliveira said.

Image

Cohen said he plans on doing the fundraiser again next year, adding that it is his dream to open up a little café in which “all the profits will still go to SickKids, no matter what.”

Cohen’s cousin was taken to SickKids Hospital when he was three months old after experiencing a Trachael collapse. Ever since, his family has had a strong connection to the facility and its staff.

“We’ve had other family members who've had to go to SickKids, like actually recently last month, my young cousin, he also had to go in,” Oliveira told CTV News Toronto in November when the campaign first launched.

“Cohen's just really always loved SickKids … it’s just such a great hospital.”

Cohen will be receiving a certificate of recognition for his fundraising on Tuesday. He will also be going to city hall at the end of the month to get yet another certificate for his good works.

“I try to be the best person I can,” Cohen said.

Mutant cyclops goat born stuns farmer with two large eyes fused together
Everything on the planet is unique, but maybe not quite as much as a strangely adorable black goat born in India which has more in common with ancient Greek mythology than its own mum

Image

A goat has given birth to a cyclops kid, leaving their farmer owner stunned.

The unfortunate child appears to have two large eyeballs fused together, coming together in the middle of its forehead, giving the appearance of an ancient mythological creature.

A one-off, the newborn came into the world on Thursday morning (November 10), and when word got out people hurried to see the irregular arrival.

It was born in Sultanpur, India, and shares a single eyelid with two eyeballs sitting underneath.

Umesh Maratha, the owner of the remarkable mammal, said that despite being a veteran goat farmer who had been in the job for years, this particular kid was unlike any he had seen before.

The sheer strangeness has led to odd reactions in many of the people who have been to see it, with some even feeling that the goat is more comparable to a human due to its strange birth defect.

Image

To make things even odder the goat's older sibling, and its mother’s firstborn, came out with no known deformities of any kind and is completely regular in its appearance.

This means the newborn really is a one-off and was not guaranteed to turn out the way it has given its parents’ genetics.

The good news is, that despite the strange appearance of the little one, it is otherwise understood to be completely healthy and able to live a normal life.

Mutant animals are a fairly regular occurrence.

In August, news broke of a double-headed kitten born in Arkansas, USA.

The two-faced little fella was named Harvey after the two-faced Harvey Dent in the movie Batman: The Dark Knight.

Ariel Contreras, the owner of the kitten told KYTV: “I went to go do laundry, I’d seen my cat was like meowing, and then all of the sudden babies started coming out, and I started yelling for my husband.

"This is the second one, so whenever he came out, my husband said, 'honey, it has two heads', and I went, 'no way!'"

Australian park rangers find nearly 2.7 kg (6-pound) 'Toadzilla'

Image

Rangers at a national park in Queensland, Australia, found a massive 5.9-pound cane toad that they said might be the largest ever on record.

The Queensland Department of Environment and Science said in a post on its website that Conway National Park rangers stopped their vehicle for a snake crossing a road near Airlie Beach and spotted a "monster cane toad" nearby.

"I reached down and grabbed the cane toad and couldn't believe how big and heavy it was," ranger Kylee Gray said.

The rangers nicknamed their discovery "Toadzilla" and removed it from the park due to the danger it could pose to the environment.

"A cane toad that size will eat anything it can fit into its mouth, and that includes insects, reptiles and small mammals," Gray said.

She said the toad, believed to be a female, weighed in at 5.9 pounds, which could be a new record for the species.

"I'm not sure how old she is, but cane toads can live up to 15 years in the wild -- so this one has been around a long time. We're pleased to have removed her from the national park," Gray said.

She said The Queensland Museum has shown interest in taking Toadzilla for further study.

This is the creature that has great white sharks trembling with fear

Image

How the tides have turned.

An unlikely pair of culprits have been scaring great white sharks away from the coast of South Africa for years, according to scientists who began noticing the absence of the dreaded apex predator along the country’s Western Cape — known as the global “Great White Capital” — back in 2017.

What was first suspected to have been caused by human activities such as overfishing has now been pinned on something else entirely. According to new research, it’s a particularly vicious pair of orcas, or killer whales.

Not only are they slaughtering the great whites en masse — eight carcasses have washed ashore since 2017 and many more deaths are suspected, per the latest reports — but the orcas are also tearing apart their prey to get at the hearts and nutrient-filled livers.

“What we seem to be witnessing is a large-scale avoidance, mirroring what we see used by wild dogs in the Serengeti in Tanzania in response to increased lion presence,” said study lead and marine biologist Alison Towner.

The mass exodus is encouraging a new mesopredator — the bronze whaler shark, which is known to be eaten by the great white — to flood the area, only to run into the apparently insatiable interlopers.

“These Bronze Whalers are also being attacked by the Orcas too, who are indicating a level of experience and skill in hunting large sharks,” Towner said.

The deadly crimp in the food chain spells out potential long-term damages for the ecosystem, Towner warns.

“Balance is crucial. With no great white sharks restricting Cape fur seal behavior, the seals can predate on critically endangered African penguins, or compete for the small pelagic fish they eat,” she said. “There is only so much pressure an ecosystem can take, and the impacts of orcas removing sharks are likely far wider-reaching.”

Castaway Elvis Francois is attended by Colombian Navy members after he was rescued near the department of La Guajira, in the extreme north of Colombia. According to the Navy, the 47-year-old from Dominica said he had been adrift for 24 days in the Caribbean Sea after he was repairing a boat last December near the island of Sint-Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles.

BOGOTA, Colombia — The Colombian navy rescued a man from Dominica who says he survived 24 days adrift in the Caribbean on a sailboat by eating ketchup, garlic powder and seasoning cubes.

Elvis Francois, 47, had scrawled the word "help" in English on the boat's hull, which officials said was key to his rescue.

The sailboat was spotted from the air 120 nautical miles northwest of La Guajira peninsula and Francois was taken to the port city of Cartagena by a passing container ship, the Colombian navy said in a statement Wednesday.

Francois told Colombian authorities that his ordeal began in December when currents swept the sailboat out to sea while he was making repairs off the island of St. Martin in the Netherlands Antilles, where he lives.

"I called my friends, they tried to contact me, but I lost the signal. There was nothing else to do but sit and wait," Francois recalled in a video released by the navy.

He said subsisted on a bottle of ketchup, garlic powder and Maggi cubes.

Cmdr. Carlos Urbano Montes told The Associated Press on Thursday that Francois said he collected rainwater with a cloth. He said Francois was found in good health, but told official he had lost weight.

Francois said on the videotape that he had to constantly remove water from the boat to prevent it from sinking. He also tried to light a fire to send a distress signal without success.

Finally, a plane passed by and he signaled with a mirror. He said the navy told him that he was spotted when the plane passed again.

"At some point I lost hope and thought about my family, but I thank the coast guard. If it weren't for them I wouldn't be telling the story," Francois said.

Urbano Montes said the sailboat was abandoned at sea when Francois was picked up by the merchant ship.

The navy said Francois received a medical check on shore and then was handed over to immigration authorities for his return home to Dominica.

Woman Sends Ex-Boyfriend Over 1,000 Texts After Being Dumped
January 18th, 2023*

A UK woman has been issued a restraining order after reportedly sending her ex-boyfriend up to 150 texts per day, trying to rekindle their relationship.

28-year-old Michelle Felton was recently banned from contacting her ex-boyfriend, Ryan Harley, in any way for 18 months, and sentenced to 18 months of community service with 30 days of rehabilitative activity. The young woman from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, reportedly harassed Mr. Harley by texting and calling him over 1,000 times after being dumped by him. Despite making it clear that he did not want anything to do with her, Harley claims that she continued trying to contact him and rekindling their 21-month romance.

Image
Photo: Kelli McClintock/Unsplash

“Mr Harley informed Miss Felton that he wished to end the relationship. He said that it had been toxic in his view. She did not agree with that, and it led to the harassment offense,” prosecutor Arron Smith said. “Between the dates of February 15 and February 26 (2022), there was a constant barrage of messages. There were 100s of messages each day, missed calls and texts sent without reply.”

“They are not threatening messages or abusive messages, but it’s the constant nature of them. She stated that she loves Mr Harley, that she was hurt that the relationship was over, and did not want to continue living,” Smith added. “She sent photos of her and said that he belongs to her.”

Ryan Harley said that his ex-girlfriend’s constant texting caused him great discomfort and that he had made it very clear that he did not want to continue dating her, but instead was looking to rebuild his life. She simply ignored his stance and continued sending him messages like “Why won’t you speak to me? I love you. Are we meeting tonight? Are we going out?”

Image

When Felton started showing up at his house unannounced and leaving gifts on his doorstep, Harley called the police and reported her behavior. The 28-year-old woman accepted responsibility for the harassment and took responsibility for the over 1,000 messages, but claims that her ex only filed the complaint to avoid being prosecuted for grievous bodily harm against her.

Miss Felton’s defense lawyer told the court that Ryan Harley had accidentally broken one of her fingers during an argument where she had also kicked him in the groin. After convincing her not to go to a hospital, Harley allegedly cut off all communication with Felton, and she simply couldn’t understand why.

“It’s a sad story but nevertheless here you are,” Judge Alan Eyres told Felton. “We have taken into account your late guilty plea and that you have no previous convictions. We do not want to see you again.”

Pizza Hut breaks the Guinness World Record for BIGGEST ever pizza

And you think you helped scarf down a really big pizza recently? You've got nothin' on this one. Pizza Hut has taken a hefty slice of the Guinness Records pie after cooking up what has officially been labeled the world's biggest ever pizza.

The pizza chain enlisted a team of workers to put together the giant pie, which required a staggering 13,653 pounds of dough, 4,948 pounds of sweet marinara sauce, more than 8,800 pounds of cheese and 630,496 regular and cupped pepperoni.

Ultimately, the final pie measure in at a whopping 13,990 square feet - earning it the title of the world's biggest pizza.

In order to construct the pizza, a team of people spread individual squares of pizza dough across an enormous floorspace at the Los Angeles Convention Center, before painstakingly topping them with the marinara sauce, cheese, and pepperoni.

And - having presumably failed to find an oven big enough to accommodate the sprawling spread of dough and cheese - the company then heated the pie from above in sections, moving the baking device across the pizza in order to ensure each bit was properly heated.

The mammoth pie produced around 68,000 slices of pizza when it was completed, David Graves, President of Pizza Hut, revealed while overseeing the construction of the dish - which was created in honor of the chain bringing back popular 90s dish, The Big New Yorker.

The New York-style pizza is set to return to menus on February 1, having disappeared from Pizza Hut's list of staple dishes years ago.

According to the chain, the pizza features 'six foldable slices' that are designed to be eaten like a classic $1 slice you would typically find in a New York pizzeria.

Construction on Pizza Hut's enormous record-breaking pie began on Wednesday - however the chain had a painstakingly long two-day wait before it received the official thumbs-up from the Guinness team, who confirmed that they had succeeded in their cheese-infused task.

The previous Guinness record for the world's largest pizza was set in 2012 by a group of Italian chefs. Their pizza was 1,261.65 square meters, gluten-free, and given the name Ottavia.

Image

'Our customers have been begging us to bring back the Big New Yorker for more than two decades, so we knew we had to do something big,' Graves said in a statement.

The pizza chain teamed up with YouTube star Eric 'Airrack' Decker on the stunt, which was also held in celebration of the online creator reaching his 10 million subscriber milestone.

'Thanks to my community, 2022 was a big year for our channel and I promised them that we’d break this record if they helped me hit 10 million subscribers on YouTube, so here we are delivering on that promise,' Airrack said of his involvement.

According to Pizza Hut, the completed pie went to a very worthy home when it was fully-cooked (and photographed), with Graves revealing that they donated the slices to local food banks and charities in Los Angeles.

'The great thing is, none of it's going to waste, we actually donated it to some local food banks here in the Los Angeles community, so we're really excited about that,' he explained.

Indian Diamond Heiress, 8, Gives Up Her Family's Multimillion-Dollar Fortune to Become a Jain Nun

“Devanshi showed religious inclination since she was a toddler,” said one family friend

Image

An 8-year-old diamond heiress from India is forgoing her fortune to embrace a simple lifestyle as a Jain nun.

Devanshi Sanghvi was set to own Sanghvi and Sons, her family's diamond company that's reportedly worth millions, within the next decade, according to The Times of India.

But on Wednesday, the young girl committed her life to Jainism — an ancient religion based on non-violence and love for living beings — by becoming a nun, the Times and Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

The four-day ceremony was concluded at a temple where Devanshi swapped out her elegant clothing for a simple white outfit, per the AFP. All her hair was removed, as well.

A family associate told the Press Trust of India that Devanshi took her vow of renunciation in front of hundreds of onlookers at a venue in Vesu, according to The Independent.

"Devanshi showed religious inclination since she was a toddler," said family friend Nirav Shah, per the outlet. "She has followed ascetic life since a very young age."

Devanshi is one of the youngest individuals to have taken the "diksha" ceremony, according to the AFP. Her family are also members of the faith.

One event organizer told the Times that Devanshi's family "lives a simple life" despite their fortune.

A family friend told the outlet that Devanshi has "never watched TV, or movies and never went to restaurants or attended marriages."

Individuals like Devanshi must abandon all material possessions in order to join strict religious order, per the outlets.

In addition to a rigorous vegetarian diet, some monks and nuns with the religion opt to cover their mouths with fabric to avoid harming insects by swallowing them.

Mayhem as giant seal goes on town rampage and storms petrol station

Image

A sleepy holiday town was thrown into mayhem after an enormous elephant seal made its way through the centre.

The seal emerged from the waves and surprised tourists in Point Lonsdale, around an hour and a half south of Melbourne.

Authorities arrived at the scene and accompanied the seal as it made its way across roads into town.

Traffic had to be stopped to allow the pinniped, believed to be known locally as Henry, to cross the road safely.

"Henry" then proceeded to break into the only petrol station in the town, where it allegedly tried to smash another window.

Image

Experts have claimed that this may have been because it became confused by its reflection, mistaking it for another seal.

Attending officers instructed members of the public to remain at least 30 metres away from the seal, and at least 50 metres if they had a dog with them.

Eventually, authorities were able to persuade Henry to return to the sea by getting them to lunge at an officer who was slowly backing towards the water.

Crowds gathered on the beach as Henry once more took to the waves, leaving the town behind.

Elephant seals are the largest pinnipeds, a classification covering seals and walruses, and get their name from the distinctive trunk-like nose that males possess.

They are truly massive, with larger males weighing up to 5,000kg and growing as long as 6 metres.

Image

They are also among the deepest diving mammals, with one being recorded at a depth of 2,388 metres, though the average depth that they dive to seek out prey is around 300 to 600 metres.

The seals are able to do this in part due to a higher volume of blood relative to their body size and more red blood cell, this allows them to retain more oxygen in their bodies for these deep dives.
