Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Netflix wants to hire a flight attendant for one of its private jets, and says pay can reach $385,000, according to a job listing on the streaming service's website.

While the job description on Netflix's website doesn't specify an exact salary, the posting says the "overall market range" for the position ranges from $60,000 to $385,000 in total compensation.

The flight attendant will operate out of San Jose International airport and fly on a G550 Super midsized jet, according to the company.

Specifications for the position, laid out by Netflix, require the flight attendant to be based in Northern California and to "embrace the Netflix culture of freedom and responsibility."

The position require the employee to be FAA-certified, able to assist procuring aircraft stock before trips, and able to carry 30-pound bags.

'Very unfashionable shark' trapped in woman's skirt and may die if experts can't find it
A 'very unfashionable shark' has been spotted wearing a woman's skirt, with experts worried that the sea-based predator may die if it is not attended to, with the fabric forming a noose

Image

Experts are hurriedly searching for a "very unfashionable shark" that was spotted roaming the waters while wearing a woman's skirt.

Although the image of the shark dressed up in a skirt proved amusing, marine biologists are desperate to find the ocean-going predator as it is at risk of dying.

On closer inspection of the images, it appears that the shark is actually being choked out by the apparel, with the woman's skirt forming a makeshift noose that are blocking the gills of the sea creature.

Cayman Islands' Department of Environment are keen to find the "poor nurse shark" before it is choked to death by the mesh piece.

Image

A statement released by the Department of Environment read: "This poor nurse shark became entangled in a mesh bag which somehow found its way into the sea.

"We are doing out best to locate and assist him but so far, we've been unsuccessful."

Scuba diver Brad Nelson had first spotted the creature, whose life was at risk after sporting a mesh bag around itself, which the diver described as "very unfashionable".

Posting a series of snaps to Facebook, the diver said that he would have helped the ocean predator but did not have the tools at his disposal to do so.

Image

Nelson wrote: "This sad Nurse Shark was wearing a mesh bag (very unfashionable). Unfortunately, I didn't have my fancy scissors to help him out of his predicament. Perhaps I'll see him again tomorrow..."

The shark, which experts are actively searching for in the hopes of helping them before it is too late "could be anywhere" according to worried officials, FLKey news reported.

Although the size of the shark was not revealed, it is known that a nurse shark can grow up to 12 feet and are "harmless and not aggressive but will bite if they are provoked."

The official Cayman Islands tourism website reads: "The nurse shark occurs throughout the Caribbean, and is one of the more commonly seen sharks, most often observed ‘sleeping’ under ledges or in holes in the reef during the daytime."

Finally! KFC Launches Fried Chicken Incense Sticks
January 20th, 2023*

KFC Thailand recently teamed up with several scent experts to create incense sticks that not only look edible but also smell like KFC fried chicken when lit.

Colonel Sanders’ secret recipe containing 11 herbs and spices is notoriously hard to replicate in the kitchen, let alone in insence sticks, but KFC Thailand claims to have achieved the impossible. Partnering with a number of scent and perfume experts, the Thai branch of the international fast food chain managed to come up with an incense stick formula that not only looks good enough to eat, but gives off the same aroma as KFC fried chicken when lit. The only problem is that you can’t buy these incense sticks, only win them.

Image

Pak Wansiri, CCO of marketing company Wunderman Thompson Thailand, said that the goal of this unique project was to get the KFC brand into the public’s attention for the Chinese New Year by taking advantage of a centuries-old tradition – the lighting of incense sticks to pay homage to the gods.

Creating fried chicken incense sticks turned out to be a lot more challenging than the team originally thought. Not did they have to replicate KFC’s 11 herbs and spices recipe, but they had to rely on food flavorings to achieve their goal. To do this, KFC Scent teamed up with Sense Laboratory Co.,Ltd. and Klinkasem Incense.

Image

The look and texture of these unique incense sticks were also a challenge to get right, as they had to look as delicious as they allegedly smell. Looking at the pics above, we are inclined to say that the creators outdid themselves.

But filling your home with the smell of KFC fried chicken without actually ordering the food is not as simple as buying a pack of incense sticks. Unfortunately, they are not for sale, but a part of a unique raffle. Participants have to comment on the Facebook page of KFC Thailand for the chance to win one of 100 prizes of 32.000 baht ($980) and a box of fried chicken incense sticks.

Image

Don’t be sad, though, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing these KFC incense sticks on auction platforms like eBay very soon.

New AI app slammed for allowing users to chat with Hitler and Jesus

Image

An AI app has been hit with backlash for allowing users to “chat” with controversial figures from history — including Adolf Hitler.

Historical Figures uses Artificial Intelligence technology to power “text conversations with robots [that are] meant to simulate the perspectives of notable people,” NBC reports.

The app became available on Apple’s App Store earlier this month and is climbing the charts in the “Education” category.

“With this app, you can chat with deceased individuals who have made a significant impact on history from ancient rulers and philosophers to modern-day politicians and artists,” a description of Historical Figures declares.

“Simply select the historical figure you want to chat with and start a conversation. You can learn about their life, their work, and their impact on the world in a fun and interactive way.”

The app allows users to chat with over 20,000 personalities, including Plato, Princess Diana, Abraham Lincoln and Benjamin Franklin. Even Jesus Christ is also available to text.

But the decision to include dictators such as Hitler and Holocaust architect Heinrich Himmler has attracted backlash, with critics saying the app is not safe for schools.

"ICYMI putting Hitler behind a paywall was definitely a conscious monetization strategy from the developers," tweeted the user. " 'Unlock Adolf Hitler for 500 coins' is quite the sentence. Just absolutely priceless UX work here. [infinite melting face emojis]."

One user was also disturbed by a text chat with a Henry Ford AI chatbot, which seemingly attempted to excuse his instances of antisemitism.

“Yes, this is very historically accurate and useful and should definitely be used in classrooms,” one Twitter user sarcastically sniped. “This is my convo with Henry Ford where I try to get him to talk about his very well-documented antisemitism. This thing can’t go anywhere NEAR a classroom.”

The tweet was accompanied by two screenshots showing the Henry Ford AI chatbot stating: “My reputation as an antisemite is based on a few isolate incidents.”

“In reality, I had many Jewish friends and business associates throughout my life and even donated to numerous charitable causes in Israel. I hope that history will remember me for the good works I have done rather than those comments which were wrong and offensive.”

The same Twitter user also shared screenshots showing that the option to chat with Hitler was locked behind a paywall.

“ICYMI putting Hitler behind a paywall was definitely a conscious monetization strategy from the developers,” tweeted the user. “ ‘Unlock Adolf Hitler for 500 coins’ is quite the sentence. Just absolutely priceless UX work here. [infinite melting face emojis].”

Meanwhile, another user posted a tweet of Himmler seemingly “apologizing” for his role in the Holocaust.

“[I] deeply regret this and take full responsibility for my role in these atrocities,” writes Himmler’s AI bot.

The Anti-Defamation League has expressed concerns about the app. Yael Eisenstat, the vice president of the ADL’s Center for Technology and Society, told NBC News: “Having pretend conversations with Hitler — and presumably other well-known antisemites from history — is deeply disturbing and will provide fodder for bigots.”

The app’s creator, Sidhant Chadda, told the site that the app is still a work in progress.

“If I detect that the model’s output is racist, sexist or hateful in content, I actually omit the response entirely,” he stated.

“People expect these historical figures to be truthful, but in reality, people are not always 100% honest,” Chadda continued. “The politician is going to give a political answer in response, and that can create problems, but I think that’s more honest from the historical perspective.”

Meanwhile, other users have been thrilled to engage in conversation with less-controversial historical figures and have been wowed by the AI technology.

After having a conversation with an Egyptian Pharaoh, one tweeted: “I don’t know why people have a problem with the historical figures AI chat, this is amazing.”

Scientists discover emperor penguin colony in Antarctica using satellite images

A newly discovered emperor penguin colony has been seen, using satellite images of one the most remote and inaccessible regions of Antarctica.

The colony, home to about 500 birds, makes a total of 66 known emperor penguin colonies around the coastline of Antarctica, half of which were discovered by space satellites. The climate crisis is posing an existential threat to these colonies, as sea ice is rapidly melting.

“This is an exciting discovery,” said Dr Peter Fretwell, of the British Antarctic Survey, who led the research. “[But] like many of the recently discovered sites, this colony is small and in a region badly affected by recent sea ice loss.”

Image
The newly-discovered colony brings the total number of known emperor penguin breeding sites around the coastline of Antarctica to 66

Emperor penguins are the only penguins that breed on sea ice, rather than land, and are located in areas that are very difficult to study because they are remote, inaccessible and can experience temperatures as low as −60C. For the last 15 years, British Antarctic Survey (BAS) scientists have been looking for new colonies by searching satellite imagery for tell-tale brown guano stains (penguin poo) on the ice.

The latest colony, at Verleger Point, in west Antarctica, was discovered based on images from the European Commission’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite mission, and confirmed on high resolution images from the Maxar WorldView-3 satellite.

Image

Penguins need the ice to last between April and September to give the chicks time to grow more robust, making them particularly vulnerable to climate breakdown. “If the ice breaks up before that, the chicks fall into the water and drown or freeze,” said Fretwell.

The size of penguin colonies also has a direct impact on their survival as the birds huddle together for protection against winter storms, particularly during the two-month period in which the male penguins incubate the eggs before they hatch.

Colonies have already been lost due to changes in sea ice, including one at Marguerite Bay that had been studied since the 1940s, and another in Halley Bay that had been stable for 50 years. “Most emperor penguins will never see a human in their lifetime, but what we’re doing on the other side of the world is slowly killing them,” said Fretwell.

Image
A map of known emperor penguin colonies with the newly-discovered colony marked by a larger red dot.

Since 2015, there have been dramatic changes in sea ice in Antarctica, which have accelerated. “Last year we had the worst ever sea ice conditions in Antarctica and this year is even worse,” said Fretwell. “We’re still working on what that means for the penguins, but it’s not good.”

Previous research has predicted that 90% of known colonies will be lost by the end of the century if no further action is taken to cut the greenhouse gas emissions. And Fretwell said that there was little that could be done to mitigate this impact besides curbing global warming. “We can try and protect the foraging areas for penguins by banning fishing,” he said. “But truthfully this is a global problem and it can’t be looked at on a local scale.”

(Okay .. is it just me, or did anyone else read that headline and think this:

Image
Here's a pengin using the satellite imaging system.

Right ... as usual just me then. )

(I also think the fun part of this (which the headline writer also seems to have missed) is that they spotted the colony because of the sheer amount of shit, the penguins had splattered across Antarctica.)

Railroad Worker Rescues Raccoon After the Hair on its Butt Got Frozen to the Tracks

Image

Railroad workers were able to rescue a stricken male raccoon after it became frozen to the tracks—stuck fast by the hair on its private parts.

The animal was seen facing the oncoming train carriage as it straddled one side of the track.

Neil Mullis was out on the job when he came across the poor little guy.

The traumatized-looking raccoon was eventually rescued after a five-minute operation.

“I poured the warm water under his bottom while a co-worker worked the shovel under his butt to try and break him loose,” said the 35-year-old.

“After about five minutes of slowly working him loose, he was free. He jumped off the rail and ran in the woods never looking back.”

Despite the rescue efforts from Neil and his colleagues, nobody could tell how, or why, the raccoon got into this predicament near Cochran, Georgia.

“I’m guessing because it was 10 degrees outside, somehow he was crossing over the rail and sat too long and got stuck!” said Neil.

After inspecting the clumps of fur left stuck to the rail, Neil summed it up by saying: “Operation well-performed.”

“Little fella is safe now.”

Marine rescuers form human chain to guide dolphin out of Florida creek

Image

Marine rescuers in Florida teamed up to help a dolphin stranded alone in a creek for more than two weeks.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium said in a Facebook post that personnel joined forces with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to rescue a dolphin first spotted in a Clearwater creek Jan. 1.

The aquarium said the dolphin appeared to be unable to find its way back out of the creek and rescuers were concerned that prolonged human interaction would endanger its ability to survive on its own in the wild.

The NOAA Fisheries Service made the decision to mount a rescue and joined with the aquarium and FWC to create a human chain of 28 rescuers in the water to guide the dolphin to the creek's exit.

"We're thankful to the residents in the area who worked with us to help protect the animal from harassment and provided access to their property while we monitored and rescued the animal," the aquarium's Facebook post said.

Foul-smelling durian fruit is the latest food craze

Image

Social media influencers are going crazy for the Thai delicacy durian, a bizarre fruit that tastes like custard or almonds but has a stench that has been compared to raw sewage.

Colin Bannell, who sells durian through his My Exotic Fruit company in Essex, claimed that the fruit's popularity has soared recently - particularly among YouTube and TikTok stars.

He said: "Lots of people enjoy it on their holidays and want to savour it when they return home. Durian has a notoriety due to its smell, so it is a popular subject for YouTubers and TikTok reviewers.

"One video review of durian has been watched by more than two million."

However, the foul-smelling fruit is not popular everywhere as it has been banned in hotels and on public transport in Asia.

One woman from just north of Toronto is probably one of the most envied people in Ontario right now.

Camellia Kazemi Talachi of Richmond Hill has been unveiled as the big winner of that gigantic $60 million jackpot that went unclaimed for weeks.

That's right, the province's newest multimillionaire — who has been playing Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) draws for years — initially failed to realize she was the ticket holder of the $60 million jackpot from Nov. 29.

"I stopped at a gas station and decided to check my LOTTO MAX ticket, unaware the $60 million winning ticket was sold in Richmond Hill," she recalled when emotionally picking up her gigantic cheque in person.

"I gave my ticket to the clerk, and when the winning jingle started playing, I knew I won something but didn't know how much until OLG called the store and told me it was $60 million," said Talachi.

After she composed herself inside the gas station — the clerk had to help calm her down — she returned to her car with her mother and didn't share the good news for 30 minutes until arriving back home.

"I saw my life pass before my eyes as I stood there in shock. I kept thinking, 'Is this real?'," she said.

Arriving home, Talachi prepared to spill the beans and prayed to a higher power for extra help in the moment.

"I stopped to pray for a moment, and then, what felt like an out-of-body experience, I said the words, 'I am the big lottery winner in Richmond Hill!'," she recalls.

Her sister didn’t believe the news at first, but quickly realized Talachi was not lying when she started jumping up and down and cheering. Her sister then joined in the joyous celebration.

"The entire family was overjoyed for me," she said.

Talachi has spent the last four years picking her own numbers for the LOTTO MAX draw but recently switched to the QuickPicks option, leading to her astronomical jackpot win.

Now that the initial excitement has (sort of) dwindled, Talachi wants to become an entrepreneur and create jobs for those in her community.

"I want to be an entrepreneur and create jobs, but I need to take the time to figure out how to do this sustainably," she tells the OLG.

There are also plans to see some of the world's best art pieces, with travel plans for the family ready to book in the near future.

"A win this big needs to be shared and who better to share it with than the people I love the most."

Company offers $1,000 to eat cheese before bed
By Ben Hooper

Mattress-rating website Sleep Junkie is seeking five people to get paid $1,000 to participate in a study requiring them to snack on cheese before bed. Photo by Daria-Yakovleva/Pixabay.com

Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A mattress-reviewing website is seeking study participants willing to get paid $1,000 to eat cheese snacks before going to sleep.

Sleep Junkie announced it is seeking five "dairy dreamers" for a study that seeks to address the commonly held belief that consuming cheese or other dairy products before bed leads to nightmares.

"We also want to look at, if this is true, do different cheeses have more of an effect than others?" the company's post states.

The five chosen dairy dreamers will be asked to track their sleep and provide written evaluations of their sleep quality, energy level throughout the day and reports on dreams and nightmares after consuming various cheese products before going to sleep.

"We're also aware that it isn't just nightmares that can play havoc on a good night's sleep so we wanted to see if there was a link between the different types of cheese and other symptoms that can leave you feeling unrested," Sleep Junkie spokeswoman Dorothy Chambers said in the announcement.

The study will last for three months. Applications are being accepted through Feb. 10.

New Zealand Island Plagued by Bizarre ‘Surfdale Sausager’
January 23, 2023*

• No, not the sausages! Anything but the sausages!

Waiheke Island is an idyllic vacation destination off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It enjoys a reputation as a paradise on Earth — if you can afford to travel there.

But there’s a strange mystery happening on Waiheke. The island’s residents have been haunted by a bizarre occurrence for almost a year.

Somebody keeps leaving sausages in their mailboxes.

Since last summer, people all around Waiheke have found sausages left in their mailboxes. And it’s not just a sausage.

The sausage is always wrapped in bread and has sauce on it. Someone’s is providing free meals to Waiheke residents — and they really wish it would stop.

According to the locals, the strange sausage terrorist — dubbed the Surfdale Sausager — is tearing their community apart. Paranoia has gripped the island because as far as people know, their neighbor could be the dreaded sausager.

Image

‘It Is Traumatic’

One victim of the sausages is Jacob Coetzee. He found the first sausage in his mailbox in the summer of 2022.

His case was archetypal for the Surfdale Sausager. In Coetzee’s mailbox sat a single sausage. Around it was a piece of buttered white bread, and the snack was covered in tomato sauce.

At first, Coetzee thought it was just a prank of a late-night passerby who’d had one beer too many. However, his thoughts soon changed when he found another sausage.

And then another. And another.

Needless to say, Coetzee was weirded out. But he probably felt even weirder after he told his friends what had happened.

“I sent a picture to my friend group and some of them had been sausaged as well. That’s when we realized we had a serial sausager on the island,” Coetzee told Stuff.

Another victim is Nico Baigent. He has found a sausage in his mailbox three times — and dreads when the next one will arrive.

“It is traumatic and I want this to stop. It’s been going on for far too long now,” said Baigent.

“You don’t realize the toll it’s taking on your victims. Please, no more.”

Coetzee concurs. Although there may be months between the waves of sausages, he’s certain another one will always come. He just can’t know when.

“You never know when the strike will happen but when it does, everyone gets struck. It’s ripping us apart; we can’t trust one another,” Coetzee said.

“I’ve been accused, my brother’s been accused. It’s a witch hunt.”

Not the Mad Butcher

That witch hunt did at one point have a favorite target. That is Sir Peter Leitch, known colloquially as the Mad Butcher after the butcher shop franchise he started.

“Waiheke is where the Mad Butcher lives. Just saying,” noted Coetzee less than subtly.

Leitch, however, is adamant that he is not and could not be the Surfdale Sausager. As his first line of defense, he pointed out that he hasn’t owned the Mad Butcher franchise in ages.

He has no access to plentiful sausage supplies and buys his sausages at the store like everybody else. This brings him to his other point — sausages in New Zealand are so expensive that he wouldn’t dream of wasting them on a prank like this.

“I’m flabbergasted. Sausages aren’t cheap to make,” Leitch said, with plenty of experience we reckon.

“Who’s buying sausages just to put them in people’s letterboxes? Amazing.”

When not blaming the Mad Butcher, Waiheke residents have been quick to turn on each other. Baigent, for example, suspects one of his friends is the Sausager.

“When the first people got hit everyone had photos of the sausages. He claimed he’d got hit by the Sausager but didn’t have a photo. He’s also the only person in our chat group who doesn’t live in the suburb,” said Baigent.

Flimsy proof, but it’s all he has to go on.

Image

‘Freud Would Have a Field Day’

Although the people of Waiheke claim that the Sausager is destroying their community, an expert believes the opposite is happening. Clinical psychologist Dr. Dougal Sutherland thinks the plague of sausages is only bringing Waiheke closer together.

“It’s a bit of fun and brings everyone together because they’re wrapped up in an antic that seems pretty harmless,” he said.

Dr. Sutherland doesn’t believe there’s any particularly malicious motive behind the sausaging, either. In his opinion, the culprit is likely driven by the satisfaction of being locally notorious.

“This is someone with a bit of time and money, access to a barbecue, probably not a vegetarian, and not particularly health-conscious — hence the white bread. We’re looking at someone reasonably intelligent and good at hiding.”

He doesn’t dare to make guesses about the sausager’s identity. But of one thing he is certain.

“Only a male would put a sausage in a letterbox. Freud would have a field day.”

combine my story with mistee's for some late night fine cheese & wild sausage sammiches :D

Woman's video of accidentally catching giant octopus is giving people nightmares

Image

People have been left horrified after a woman caught ‘the Kraken’ while out fishing in Canada.

Brooke Sattar, from Vancouver Island, was out fishing with some pals at the Alberni Inlet recently, when she started to pull in a particularly heavy prawn trap.

Naturally, Sattar initially assumed this meant the trap had done its job and was full of prawns, but as she pulled it out of the water, she soon realised it was actually a huge octopus - believed to be a northern giant Pacific octopus, the ‘largest, longest-lived octopus species’, according to Nature Conservancy of Canada.

Sattar also managed to capture the whole thing on camera after whipping out her phone to record the big reveal.

In the clip, one of her crewmates can be heard saying: “Holy - you’re kidding! That is so huge!”

While another voice asks: “Wanna take him? I’ve never seen one this big. Holy sh*t!”

Someone else says: “That’s a big octopus. I wanna eat it, but I don’t know how to get it.”

Speaking to Global News, Sattar said: “We pulled up a big octopus. It held on for two or three minutes, it wasn’t long at all and then it just let go and swam away.”

However, she said the short encounter actually felt a lot longer, adding: “It did not feel like three minutes but then I looked at my video and thought ‘oh that was only a 20-second video’.”

Image

Sattar decided to share her video online, where it’s since racked up more than 40 million views, and left fellow TikTok users terrified.

One person said: “The stuff of nightmares. My single biggest fear.”

Another commented: “ever in my life I will go to that deep part of the ocean”

Someone else wrote: “That would scare me more than a shark.”

While a third joked: “That ain't no octopus that's a baby kraken.”

Sattar told the news outlet that she’s delighted that she could share the unusual clip with so many people across the world.

Image

“I think it’s pretty awesome that I was able to share this experience with so many people around the world because you don’t see it every day,” she said.

“I love ocean life so I was very excited and surprised.”

The northern giant Pacific octopus usually grows to around five metres in length and 20 to 50 kilograms, but the largest ever to be recorded came in at a whopping 9.1 metres long and weighed 272kg.

As the incident unfolds, groups of friends and family sat on the grass watch on and laugh.
Heads are seen turning in surprise and amusement in the hilarious photographs.
The incident happened at Teufelssee Lake - a bathing spot in the Grunwell Forest in Berlin, Germany.

Sleep experts say you can 'catch up' on sleep but sleeping in on the weekends isn't the way to do it

One-third of Americans are wracking up a debt each night that they may never be able to pay back: sleep debt. That's where the concept of "catching up on sleep" comes in: You try to squeeze in extra hours of sleep on the days following a bout of poor sleep. For example, sleeping in on the weekends.

But do those extra hours of sleep actually protect you from the health risks of sleep deprivation? Study results are mixed on the matter, but after checking out the research and chatting with some experts, we can say it seems possible to catch up on sleep, but it's difficult to achieve.

Why it's hard to catch up on sleep

Psychiatrist and sleep medicine expert, Dr. Alex Dimitriu, founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine, is of the mindset that you can catch up on sleep, but only if you haven't let your sleep debt grow too great. By definition, one hour of sleep lost equals one hour of sleep debt.

"If the sleep debt is greater, the time to recover becomes markedly longer, and complete recovery may not be possible, so it's important to not let sleep debt go too far"

Keeping your sleep debt in check is important because "long-term, not getting sufficient sleep can lead to medical problems such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, increased risk of cancer, and immune dysfunction," said Dr. James A. Rowley, former president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Foundation.

Perhaps the most intriguing results of sleep debt and recovery time came from one small study that proposed for every one hour of sleep debt, a person would need four consistent nights of seven to nine hours of quality Zzzs to fully recover.

So, if you need seven hours of sleep per night but only get six during the work week you'd accumulate five hours of sleep debt come Friday. According to the study's predictions, this means you'd need about 20 days of consistent quality sleep to fully recover.

So, sleeping in for a few hours on the weekend probably isn't going to fix that.

"While one can make up an hour or two on weekends, one cannot make up getting insufficient sleep for the whole week just by sleeping those extra hours," Rowley said.

That said, in 1963, a then-17-year-old stayed awake for 11 days for a science project. He dealt with temporary nausea and memory loss, but said that after sleeping 14 hours, he felt back to normal.

While that's not an experiment that Dimitriu would like to see his patients or anyone else repeat, it's worth noting that there's more room for studies on how periods of extended sleep affects the health risks of people who are already chronically sleep deprived.

And if the weekend is the only time you can find for sleep, it's "better to increase [sleep hours] on the weekend rather than not doing it at all," biological psychology professor at Stockholm University told Insider's Lyndsay Dodgson.

So what can you do if you're like one-third of Americans who are getting fewer than six hours of sleep a night?

How to pay back sleep debt

Paying back sleep debt is like paying back credit card debt: Try to pay all, or as much, of the total balance so that the debt doesn't grow too large.

That means not waiting until the weekend to try and catch up on an entire week's worth of lost sleep. Instead, if you miss an hour or two of sleep, try making up for it immediately the following day either with a nap — 20 to 30 minutes is best — or get a good night's sleep the following evening.

If weekends are the only time you can snag extra sleep, so be it, but experts don't recommend waiting that long.

Most important, however, is that you set a sleep schedule and stick to it. "Sleep loves regularity and rhythm," Dimitriu said, because it keeps a consistent circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythm, often called your internal clock, affects a whole host of important bodily functions including temperature regulation, hormone control, memory, focus, and — of course — sleep.

Keeping a consistent sleep schedule — aka going to bed and waking up at the same time every day — is one key way to maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm and, subsequently, a healthier you. That's why sleeping in may not be the best option and brief naps could be better.

Of course, this is all easier said than done and not everyone can change their schedules to allow for more sleep.

For example, if you're working night shifts, have multiple jobs, or need to get the kids out early in the morning, you're more likely to have sleep debt, but have less flexibility to address it. Do the best you can to get as much sleep as possible.

"In those circumstances, even finding an extra 15 minutes per night can be a big difference," Rowley said.

It may also be worth thinking outside the box. For example, a recent study found that when people switched from a 5-day work week to a 4-day work week, the percentage of those getting fewer than seven hours of sleep a night dropped from 42.6% to 14.5%.

However you decide to try and pack in more sleep, just remember that sleep isn't a luxury, it's a necessity.

"Sleep should be considered the same as diet and exercise, one of the pillars of overall good health and should be prioritized just like they are," Rowley said.
