I’m a criminologist — serial killers lurk in this ‘dangerous place’

Image

A UK criminologist and true crime author has revealed the ideal hunting ground for serial killers — and it’s closer to home than you might think.

Christopher Berry-Dee, who has come face-to-face with notorious murderers, says the internet has become a powerful tool for criminals to identify victims.

“A lot of men [are] like the serial killer John Edward Robinson, the first killer to use the internet for serial killing purposes,” Berry-Dee told The Sun of Robinson, who has been linked to the murders of eight women from 1985 to 2000.

These killers typically go into online chatrooms “as someone else,” masquerading as a businessman, for instance, to lure “lonely women back to his place” and strike.

“People underestimate the internet. It becomes a trawling hunting ground for predators,” Berry-Dee said. “Whether it’s scammers or men who prey on lonely hearts [of] women…it goes way back.”

Before dating apps, there were “lonely hearts” columns in newspapers, where people could advertise they were in the market for love.

Harvey Carignan, known as the “Want-Ad serial killer,” used paper adverts to find victims in need of assistance. He died earlier this month in prison, where he was serving time for murdering three women in Minnesota and Alaska nearly 50 years ago.

The “Lonely Hearts Killers,” Raymond Martinez Fernandez and Martha Jule Beck, found their victims from newspapers that advertised singles, and are believed to have killed 20 people — though the pair were only convicted of one murder.

From print to pixels, the “MOs” have remained consistent through the decades, Berry-Dee claims.

“The internet is really just an extension of that, it hasn’t changed. It’s just the method of doing it is electronic now,” he said, calling the internet a “dangerous place.”

Chase Seneca used Grindr, a popular dating app for gay men, to locate victims, mirroring the gruesome crimes of notorious serial killer Jeffery Dahmer.

Seneca pleaded guilty last year to kidnapping and attempting to murder a gay man, and he was sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Authorities say he intended to eat and preserve the bodies of his victims, as Dahmer had done.

John Wayne Gacy, who was convicted of killing 33 young men and boys in the Chicago area in the 1970s, targeted male prostitutes, teenagers who wanted to work for his company, and hitchhikers.

“Gacy knew where to look,” Berry-Dee said.

“He knew where these weaker people are.”

Despite technological advancement, the approach serial killers take has remained consistent, finding their “hunting ground like an animal” where they know “prey” could be, Berry-Dee said.

Lying in wait, the killers are “patient” until it’s time to “strike.”

“They know where their intended prey swim in shoals, they sniff it out and they’ll watch and they’ll wait,” he continued, “and then they’ll select the weaker one of the herd or the one who has left the group, the one who is walking to a taxi in the rain and he’s waiting.”

Illinois pet pig turning heads with skateboarding skills
By Ben Hooper
Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter

March 20 (UPI) -- A family's pet pig is turning heads in his owners' Illinois town after picking up an unusual hobby: skateboarding.

Norbert, a 150-pound black-and-white pig belonging to Vincent and Alicen Baran, has become a familiar sight to Buffalo Grove residents after learning to ride a skateboard.

"People just really enjoy seeing a pig do things that normally pigs don't do," Vincent Baran told WLS-TV. "I took one of my old skateboards and put it out and literally within seven days he was able to get his hooves on the board and push with his other hooves."

The couple said Norbert is an expert at several tricks commonly associated with dogs, including shaking hands and spinning, but the skateboarding gets him the most attention.

"He's not always graceful but it's definitely a unique thing to see," Alicen Baran said. "It's just the craziest thing to see him kind of roll on by."

Norbert has also become famous on social media after his owners started casting him in recreations of famous music videos from pop punk bands including Blink 182 and New Found Glory.

The Devil's Kettle: For Decades, Nobody Knew Where This Underground River Led
Objects thrown into the Devil's Kettle do not re-emerge.

Image

In Judge C. R. Magney State Park, Minnesota, there is an unusual feature known as the Devil's Kettle, where the Brule River splits in two around a large rock. While the bulk of the water goes over a waterfall and continues downstream, a significant amount of it travels down into a hole and then.... sort of disappears.

For decades, we didn't actually know where this water went, but not for lack of trying. Visitors to the park have reportedly thrown objects into the river, ranging from ping pong balls and GPS trackers to (according to local rumor) a car, in order to try and find the objects when they reemerge. However, after the objects were dropped into the hole, they did not come back out.

Theories had it that the water separated from the main River Brule, traveled by underground tunnels and emerged somewhere in Lake Superior, or elsewhere.

"I've heard locals describe the possibility that this water splits at the waterfall and some of it flows into Canada," park manager Peter Mott told MPR News in 2017. "I've actually heard people suggest that it may flow somehow back into the Mississippi River."

This looked unlikely, as underwater tunnels tend not to form easily in the hard rock found in the area. So where is the water, and the various objects thrown into it, going?

In 2016, a team from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources decided to examine the water flow of the river before the split, and after the main waterfall, to see if any water was being lost. Above the Devil's Kettle, the water was flowing at 3.48 cubic meters per second (123 cubic feet per second). And below the waterfall, it was flowing at 3.43 cubic meters per second (121 cubic feet per second).

"In the world of stream gauging, those two numbers are essentially the same and are within the tolerances of the equipment," mapping hydrologist Jeff Green, who was part of the research team, explained in a statement. "The readings show no loss of water below the kettle, so it confirms the water is resurging in the stream below it."

As for the missing objects, there is a simple explanation: they're getting shredded in much the way you'd expect if you lob them down something named the Devil's Kettle.

"The plunge pool below the kettle is an unbelievably powerful system of recirculating currents, capable of disintegrating material and holding it under water until it resurfaces at some point downstream," Calvin Alexander from the University of Minnesota, who was also part of the project, added.

The team believe that the water rejoins the rest of the river almost immediately after the waterfall, though it's not yet known where exactly this happens.

Widow Seduces Man Who Had Her Husband Killed, Turns Him Over to Authorities
March 20th, 2023*

A Colombian woman who lost her husband at the hands of a local crime boss, spent years planning her revenge, seducing him and gathering evidence to have him arrested for multiple crimes.

In what sounds like the script of a Hollywood blockbuster, a Colombian woman managed to do what the police and the military could not – avenge the death of her husband and bring a dangerous criminal to justice. The unnamed woman was hailed as a hero by police and journalists in Cordoba, Colombia, after spending years getting close to a cunning criminal and gathering enough evidence to have them prosecuted. But she was no crime fighter, just a grieving widow getting revenge on the man who had had her husband assassinated years before…

Image
Photo: @PoliciaColombia

Rubén Darío Viloria Barrios posed as a respectable merchant in the town of Ciénaga de Oro and most of those who knew him described him as a deeply religious man who preached the word of God. But behind the scenes, he was ‘Juancho’, a criminal mastermind who orchestrated the shipment of narcotics to Central America and the United States, ordered assassination attempts against rivals and even former collaborators and trafficked firearms and ammunition.

Because he kept a very low profile and didn’t actively participate in criminal activities, Juancho managed to keep the authorities at bay, but there were people who knew about his illegal dealings. Among these few was a woman whose husband the ruthless crime lord had ordered a hit against, for reasons that have not been made public. After mourning her husband, the woman reportedly started infiltrating Juancho’s social circles, slowly getting close to him and eventually getting him to fall in love with her.

Image
Photo: @PoliciaColombia

Viloria Barrios eventually grew to trust the woman so much that he shared information about his criminal dealings, which she then turned over to the authorities. Police had been suspecting him since 2020, but without enough evidence to convict him, they were powerless to act. With the information provided by Juancho’s confident, authorities were able to build a rock-solid case against him.

It was reportedly the woman who set up Rubén Darío Viloria Barrios to be arrested. She told police that he would be attending a meeting with other criminals in Monteria, and the Special Operations Group of the National Police managed to capture him in what was called the Corona operation.

Wanted by Interpol, Juancho now faces decades of prison time. As for the woman who orchestrated his downfall, she got to avenge the death of her husband.

The incredible recovery story of a mum-of-three who broke her back falling six metres in front of her horrified kids: 'A purpose and a goal changes everything'

A mum-of-three who broke her back after falling six metres off a balcony while on a family holiday in Thailand has since become a two-time World and Australian Para Surfing Champion.

Sam Bloom was 41 years old when she fell through a rotten balcony railing while on a family vacation in Thailand in 2013.

Ms Bloom plunged six metres onto the concrete below as her husband Cameron and children Rueben, 16, Noah, 14, Oli, 12, watched on in horror.

Her husband rushed to help but found her lying unconscious with her head split open. She'd also bitten through her tongue and a massive lump on her back could be seen.

Image
Sam Bloom was 41 years old when she fell through a rotten balcony while on a family vacation in Thailand in 2013

Ms Bloom suffered extensive injuries included a fractured skull, bruising and bleeding of her brain, rupturing both lungs and lacerating her tongue.

Her spine was also shattered at the T6 and T7 vertebrae causing a fist-shaped knot of bone to protrude from her back.

After waiting four hours for an ambulance, Ms Bloom was taken to a local hospital where doctors started stitching up her head wound.

Doctors soon realised the severity of her injuries and rushed her three hours to a private hospital, where she spent three days until her condition stabilised.

After six months of surgery and rehabilitation, Ms Bloom was left paralysed from the chest down never to walk again.

'Before my accident, I was super active. I've grown up by the beaches, so I've always surfed and felt really comfortable in the ocean,' Ms Bloom told Nine Honey.

'After my accident in 2013 when I broke my back… I don't have any control. All I have is my arms so I feel quite uncomfortable in the ocean now because I don't have control.'

Ms Bloom spent a week in a Bangkok hospital before returning home to Australia, where she began a seven-month long hospital rehabilitation.

In a Facebook post marking the 10-year anniversary of the accident, Ms Bloom wrote at times she believes the best version of herself died on the concrete.

However, she never imagined a decade later she would be a two-time world and Australian para-surfing champion competing at a national and international level.

Image
The mother-of-three shattered two vertebrae in her spine, which left her paralysed from the chest down

She thanked a member of staff working at her rehabilitation centre for recognising her former passion for sport and pushing her to try different types of para-athletics.

Initially, the staff member encouraged her to try wheelchair basketball, but Ms Bloom suggested kayaking instead.

She started paddling once she left rehab as she loved being on the water and out of her wheelchair.

The sport brought Ms Bloom solitude and independence and in 2015 she was selected to compete as part of the Australian ParaCanoe team for the World Championships in Milan.

Image

Five years later, Ms Bloom decided to give para-surfing a go despite her fears of not being able to dive under waves or run up the beach when there's a 'big shore dump'.

Ms Bloom tackled her fears with the help of her family, friends and a modified surfboard which has hand grips allowing her to control the board with her arms.

'It's awesome, but it's also frustrating because I would do anything to be able to just run down the beach on my own with my board. But I can't do that anymore,' Ms Bloom said.

'Everybody has a different story and everyone has overcome enormous challenges to get back out into the ocean. When you are talking to other people who have sustained similar injuries, we just get it.

'We just get how difficult it can be and how hard it is mentally to deal with your new life. But if you have a purpose and a goal and something to aim for, it changes everything.'

In August, 2018, Ms Bloom was selected as a member of the Australian Adaptive Surf Team and won gold for Australia at both the 2019 and 2020 World Para-Surfing Championships.

Image
Ms Bloom was selected as a captain for the 2022 ISA World Para Surfing Championship Australian team

She was announced as a captain for the 2022 ISA World Para Surfing Championship Australian team in November and made it through to the finals after placing fourth in the Prone Non Assist competition.

Ms Bloom also features, along with other sporting icons, on limited edition Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate bars representing the word 'courage' in the 'A Cheer & A Half' campaign.

Image

For Ms Bloom, being on the sand with a disability is difficult but her courage comes from being pushed out of her comfort zone and still 'giving it a go'.

She hopes the campaign will bring attention, donations and volunteers to adaptive sports and wants to inspire other Aussies living with disabilities to give sports a go.

Watch Heartwarming Reaction When Ukrainian Students Get Shocking News They Won Full College Scholarship in U.S

Image

We bring you the uplifting moments when five students in war-torn Ukraine received the life-changing news that they will receive an all-expenses paid college education to study at a college in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, thanks to the incredible generosity of philanthropist Sam Rose.

The retired lawyer and real-estate developer provided $2 million for scholarships to Dickinson College that will pay all costs for these students, giving them a chance for a future they may not have dreamed possible.

In addition to tuition for all four years, the Sam Rose ’58 International Scholarship will cover the costs of textbooks, dining and living expenses including support for travel, health insurance, and other basic needs through the academic year in addition to support during summer and winter breaks.

The five students were overwhelmed with emotion upon hearing the news from Dickinson College president, John Jones.

“Thanks to Sam’s incredible generosity, we are able to offer these students a world-class education away from the war in Ukraine,” said Jones, who placed a series of calls to Ukraine so he could personally share the scholarship offer with each student.

“We are excited to meet and learn from our new Ukrainian students, who will help us build a more interesting and engaging campus community.”

Dickinson has a long history of supporting students around the world facing strife, including through the Conflict Zone Student Support Fund, which assists international students whose demonstrated financial need has increased because of extreme violence or war in their homeland.

More than 1,800 students are currently being supported through scholarships and grants, and more than 3,642 donors have contributed to make this possible, with gifts of all sizes helping to change lives through Dickinson. Including the establishment of the new scholarship, Rose has contributed $17.5 million to the Campaign for Scholarships.

Boy, 8, raises $50,000 for Waffle House waiter forced to walk miles to work

Image

A boy has raised a fortune to help out his favourite waiter after hearing he was living in a motel and walking several miles each way to work.

Kayzen Hunter, 8, is a regular at his local Waffle House, and every time he visits he asks to be seated in the same place.

It's all part of a plan to be served by his friend, 29-year-old waiter Devonte Gardner.

However, recently Kayzen found out Devonte was going through a hard time. The dad-of-two and his family were forced to leave their apartment due to a mould infestation.

It left Devonte, his partner and their two little daughters living in a motel, and Devonte walking miles each way to work at the Waffle House in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Image

Hearing about his friend's plight, Kayzen set up a fundraiser to help out, describing Devonte as "one of the most joyous and positive people you’ve ever met".

Kayzen wrote: "Devonte is a hard-working dad with two little girls and a wife. He is a dedicated worker and has to walk or get a ride to get to work every day.

"He was looking for a decent-priced car, and his family was unfortunate and ended up in an apartment riddled with black mould. He had to get his kids out and it set him back a lot.

"We are now helping him get into a clean rental property and want to help him even more by raising funds so he has a reliable vehicle to drive his family and get to and from work."

Devonte was left in tears by the act of kindness. He told the Washington Post: “I started crying – I’d been quietly struggling and didn’t want to ask anybody for anything.

“We had to give up most of our belongings because of the mould, but we’re slowly working our way back. Even when you can work double shifts, it’s hard to get ahead. I’m thankful to have a job that I enjoy, but it’s hard to save enough to improve my family’s situation.”

He added: “I love working at Waffle House because I have an opportunity to make people feel good every day. I love the people who come in, especially Kayzen. For this little guy to do this out of the kindness of his heart is really humbling.”

Kayzen's mum, Vittoria, said: “He kept saying, ‘We have to start a GoFundMe and help Devonte get a car’. He didn’t give up on it. He’s a kid with a big heart.”

The fundraiser has raised over $50,000 (£42,000) so far, allowing Devonte to buy a new car and also it will pay for his family's apartment for one year.

Owl swoops into courtroom, sends magistrate 'running out screaming'

Image

Animal rescuers in South Africa said a court's session was interrupted when an owl swooped into the chamber through a hole in the ceiling.

The Owl Rescue Centre in Hartbeespoort said in a Facebook post that it was contacted by the Brakpan SPCA for help rescuing a barn owl from a magistrate's courtroom in Brakpan.

"The owl actually flew in through a hole in the ceiling which had the magistrate and the entire room full of people running out screaming," the post said.

The group said it took time, but rescuers were able to capture the owl and remove it from the building.

People are loving a photo of a ton of free food that was donated to a Toronto neighbourhood, and it's great to see the community love.

Little free pantries are located all over Toronto - and in case you're not familiar - they're basically safe food boxes where people leave food for others in need, to pick up whenever they need it.

"Thank you to whomever absolutely stuffed the Beachdale pantry yesterday," wrote Heidi Tsao, who posted a photo of the pantry to a local Facebook group. "The neighbourhood giveth."

The photo shows a pantry fully stocked with items like pasta, canned goods, condiments and tea.

Tsao tells blogTO that she's aware that there are people that make regular drop-offs at the pantry, including someone who makes a big drop-off about once a week. She figures at the time she took the photo, she was lucky enough to capture a really big drop right after it had been left.

Image

"I happened to catch it when it was full, and it was really full. What I usually do is take some stuff out so that I can distribute it throughout the week," says Tsao. "I also add to it daily with a supply of stuff I get in bulk or on sale. The thought of someone coming all that way and finding the pantry empty really breaks my heart."

As one of the people who watches over the pantry regularly, Tsao is happy to report there's usually at least something in there.

"Different people have taken ownership in the neighbourhood and I've even seen people drive up in their car and unload a bunch [of items]," says Tsao.

"Just yesterday, someone filled the pantry again, this time with a bunch of dog items. I'll be taking them to Mattie's Place, which runs a pet food bank. One of the items was a 6.5 kg box of Milk Bones. At Christmastime, the pantry was super full with three hams over the holidays, plus lots of other goodies."

Image

She says she's happy to give back to the community and help monitor the pantry, and over the past three years, it's helped her realize how privileged she is.

"I truly believe that if we share what we have with people who don't have as much, the world will be better overall for everyone," says Tsao.

The pantry is located on Beachdale if you are in the area and are experiencing food insecurity or would like to leave a donation.

Mysterious Minion sculptures appearing in small Australian town
By Ben Hooper

Image

March 21 (UPI) -- Residents of a small Australian town said sculptures of Minions have been appearing in locations around town since just before Christmas, and their origins remain a mystery.

Locals in Warrack, a Victoria town boasting a population of about 70 people, said the first Minions sculpture appeared just before Christmas, and the statues have continued to appear on various properties to reach a current total of 24.

Some of the scrap metal sculptures were designed to have uses such as mailboxes and planters, while others appear to be simple works of art dedicated to the yellow creatures from the Despicable Me franchise.

Mountainside Wines, the only business in the town, has been chronicling the Minion appearances on Facebook.

Residents say there are now more properties in town with Minion sculptures than there are without.

The creator of the sculptures remains a mystery. One installation was captured on CCTV cameras, but one of the culprits was disguised in a Santa Claus costume and the other was unclear in the footage.

Shane Goninon, owner of Mountainside Wines, said he believes the mystery artist to be local resident Daniel "Buckie" Buckingham, whose property bears a sculpture of the Minions' master, Gru. Buckingham, in turn, pointed to Goninon as his chief suspect.

Three meerkats on the loose in Netherlands town

March 21 (UPI) -- An exotic pet owner in a Netherlands town is asking residents to keep a lookout for a trio of unusual escaped animals -- his pet meerkats.

Jan Knoppert said the three meerkats, members of the mongoose family native to southern Africa, escaped from their backyard enclosure in 's-Gravenzande, Zuid-Holland.

Knoppert said the animals escaped about two weeks ago and have been spotted on multiple occasions, but always flee the scene before he arrives to attempt a capture.

Eva Schippers, a biologist with the AAP Foundation exotic animal sanctuary, said rescuers are concerned about the well-being of the African animals in the colder Netherlands climate. She said the animals would also likely have difficulty hunting for insects and small rodents around this time of year.

Knoppert said he isn't as concerned about his pets' need for food, as the meerkats have been seen eating food left out for them in then neighborhood.

Meerkats are currently legal to own in the Netherlands, but a law scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 2024, will create a list of approved exotic pets, which do not include meerkats. Officials said current owners of animals not on the list will be allowed to keep them for the duration of the animals' lives.

I’m a mechanic with 3-inch nails and heels — but my skills are the real deal

Image

She can do it all — and she can do it in heels.

A model revealed she lives a double life as a mechanic — but all the men make fun of her glamorous style.

Peyton Cicconi can fix engines just as well as the men in the industry, and she can do it while sporting XL-sixed nail extensions.

The 25-year-old from Oakland, California, has spent more than $6,000 on her nails over the past five years and refuses to make them shorter for the job.

“I face a lot of difficulties in the industry as a woman such as daily harassment and men belittling me,” the influencer told NeedToKnow.Online. “When I started my automotive technician course, I was the only woman in my entire class of 100 people.”

Aside from her manicures with eccentric designs and colors, she also wears fishnet tights and mini skirts to repair cars.

Cicconi’s passion for cars began as a kid when she would play Hot Wheels with her twin brother, and she believes her career path as a mechanic was set since she was a baby.

Though she has seven years experience in the male-dominated industry, she still finds she’s not taken seriously and is frequently harassed on the job.

Even with referrals, Cicconi had a hard time getting work as a mechanic.

“My school principal would be calling managers telling them I was capable of suspension jobs and they would still be hesitant to have a woman at their shop,” she shared.

Cicconi first started getting her nails done since she also works as a model, but she uses her career working with cars as manicure inspiration.

“I started having fun and customizing my nail polish colors to match my cars and trucks paint so I guess it just took off after that,“ she said.

Every time she went to get a new set done, she would get her nails longer and longer.

It took her a lot of trial-and-error and broken nails to figure out how to work with them.

Her most recent set of nails, which she says is her favorite, is the longest she’s ever gone — three inches long.

But her long nails have come in handy for her friends and colleagues.

“I’m always being called so they can use my nails as a pick or to scrape something,” Cicconi said.

She documents her life on her TikTok account under the handle @minitruckbabe, where she has 1.2 million followers and has racked up 19.9 million likes on her videos.

Cicconi often shows her fans how she installs car parts using her long nails, and many fans rush to the comments to show their support.

“Awesome job gorgeous,” one person wrote.

“Love how u do it with heels and nails,” another said.

“I love this. This is what I want my daughter seeing, and sons,” a parent commented.

Cicconi loves to share all about her love for mechanics, but it doesn’t always come easy.

She shared she’s often the target of mean comments from trolls and she’s had “a lot of heartbreaking things happen.”

“A lot of men online have called me fake. So many industry professionals were hating on my nails – it felt so unfair and I felt alone,” she admitted. “I was depressed at one point and didn’t know if I should keep my nails.”

However, Cicconi hopes that her videos can inspire women to follow through with their passions while still being glam.

“My videos of me working in nails has started a worldwide movement of confident women that aren’t afraid to embrace their feminine side,” she said.

“In my opinion, women are so teachable and great learners when it comes to automotive mechanics! [And] women definitely feel more trusting coming to a mechanic like me, they know I’m not going to overcharge them or scam them just because of their gender.”

Pair of Peterborough children set for steam train treat after raising thousands to fix arson hit signal box

Two Peterborough children have raised almost £10,000 to repair a signal box badly damaged by a suspected arson.

The box at Orton Mere will cost Nene Valley Railway many thousands of pounds to fix after the fire in the early hours of Monday morning. Train mad 12-year-olds, Oliver Walker and Harry Cowley, both students at Nene Park Academy, were left devastated by the blaze.

They are now determined to do their bit to bring the box back to its former glory.

The pair, who each started web fundraising pages, have also decided to go on a 10 mile walk along the length of the track to raise cash. Since the fundraisers went live, the duo have raised more than £9,000 (£9,783, at the time of writing) – with the figure still rising.

‘Absolutely brilliant’

Michael Purcell, chairman of trustees at Nene Valley Railway, thanked the boys and said: “I was contacted on Monday, and told someone had set fire to the signal box.

"Then I was told two boys had set out to raise money for us. It was wonderful – it really showed the two side of human spirit, after the attack. "We can’t thank them enough, they have been absolutely brilliant.

"We have some treats lined up to thank them. We have the Sir Nigel Gresley (steam locomotive) coming to Nene Valley Railway soon, and we will be arranging for something with them.”

Michael said investigations were still ongoing as to how much damage had been caused, but it was likely to come to many thousands of pounds.

Harry said they had been proud to raise the money they had done, saying: “It does feel like we have accomplished something.”

Oliver said the pair wanted to thank everyone who had helped them raise the money.

The fire was linked to a number of arson attacks that happened in the Ortons on Sunday night and Monday morning.

Police are still appealing for witnesses, and anyone with information should call 101.
