A lion cub gets swept away in a flooding river, but swims for its life to reach mom, only to get washed away again. This time, the lioness saves her cub flooding in river and carries it to safety.

Callum Robertson, 28, a guide at Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa, was able to capture this rare moment on camera and shared it with LatestSightings.com.

"We had been searching for these lion cubs for a while. We had a general idea of their whereabouts and headed in that direction. Finally, we found them on the other side of a flooding river. It was a tense moment as we watched the cubs crawl out of the reeds and prepare to cross the dangerous waters."

Lions are not known for their love of water and only swim when necessary, so it was a surprise when the cubs began showing intent to cross.

"We held our breath. One of my guests couldn't even watch as she had her head tucked between her legs.

"In the end, we had a sigh of relief as the mother was able to swim to safety with the one cub, but the question of how she was going to fetch the other cub still lingered."

Lionesses have incredible motherly instincts and dedication to their cubs. From protecting them from predators to teaching them how to hunt, lionesses are always there for their cubs. They nurse their young to care for them until they reach adulthood.

"Our relief was short-lived as the second cub was swept away by the strong currents. We watched in horror as it struggled to stay afloat. To our amazement, the little cub managed to swim back toward its mother. Our hearts were in our throats as we waited to see what would happen next.

"Thankfully, the mother lioness proved her worth as she plunged into the water to rescue her cub. We watched as she swam toward her struggling baby and brought it safely to shore."

Every dog has its day! Hilarious moment a pet hound retrieves a baseball after a seventh inning homer in the Royals vs Dodgers spring training game - sending the fans in Arizona wild!

A dog made his owner's day by fetching a baseball that flew into the stands in a spring training game on Saturday involving the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals.

While at bat, Dodgers prospect Michael Busch smashed a ball over the fence in the seventh inning for his second homer of the spring and, as usual, fans scrambled to retrieve the ball, like they often do during regular-season and postseason games.

However, a cunning canine grabbed the ball instead and quickly rushed back to its owner before anyone could stop it.

Image
WHERE'D THE BALL GO: A homer in the seventh inning of Saturday's Dodgers-Royals spring game ended in unusual fashion

Then, the dog's owner, wearing a Dodgers-K9 jersey, got up and showed the ball to the crowd and cameras, much to the delight of fans.

However, one Dodgers fan, wearing a Trea Turner jersey, visibly seemed to have been baffled with the flying ball's outcome, raising his arms in disbelief that the dog managed to retrieve the piece of sports memorabilia before he did.

Image
The fan made sure to recognize his dog's efforts by showing that his pet caught the baseball to cameras

An authenticated ball (one sold by MLB) can be sold anywhere from $30 (foul ball, pitch in the dirt, etc.) to thousands of dollars (say, a Albert Pujols HR).

A ball which a fan catches him or herself in the stands, no matter who hit it, and whatever the outcome is - is probably near worthless, most of the time, though there are a few exceptions.

That's because there's no way for a fan to prove that the ball that he or she is selling is actually what they are claiming to offer for sale, unless approached by the league or team postgame.

In case you're wondering, the most expensive ball in baseball history is still Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball from 1998, which sold for $3.05million.

The baseball that New York Yankees star Aaron Judge hit for his American League record-setting 62nd home run of the 2022 season, sold for $1.5million in December.

Levi’s will ‘supplement’ human models with AI-generated fakes

Image
This person does not exist

Levi’s is partnering with an AI company on computer-generated fashion models to “supplement human models.” The company frames the move as part of a “digital transformation journey” of diversity, equity, inclusion and sustainability. Although that sounds noble on the surface, Levi’s is essentially hiring a robot to generate the appearance of diversity while ridding itself of the burden of paying human beings who represent the qualities it wants to be associated with its brand.

Levi Strauss is partnering with Amsterdam-based digital model studio Lalaland.ai for the initiative. Founded in 2019, the company’s mission is “to see more representation in the fashion industry” and “create an inclusive, sustainable, and diverse design chain.” It aims to let customers see what various fashion items would look like on a person who looks like them via “hyper-realistic” models “of every body type, age, size and skin tone.”

Levi’s announcement echoes that branding, saying the partnership is about “increasing the number and diversity of our models for our products in a sustainable way.” The company continues, “We see fashion and technology as both an art and a science, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Lalaland.ai, a company with such high-quality technology that can help us continue on our journey for a more diverse and inclusive customer experience.”

Levi’s claims, “AI will likely never fully replace human models for us” (note the qualifying “likely”). But I can’t help but see this as the first step in a dystopian slow walk toward automating the industry. As AI-generated “photography,” art and writing grow ever more convincing, we would be naive to take corporations at face value when they insist moves like this are about PR-friendly principles like celebrating diversity and looking out for the environment. At the very least, it’s awfully convenient that those high-minded motives also let them mass-produce something that previously required hiring people.

What a hoot: Carbon monoxide alert caused by owl trapped in chimney

Image

Animal rescuers in Ohio said a reported carbon monoxide leak at a family's home turned out to have an unusual cause -- an owl stuck in the chimney.

Cincinnati Animal Care said in a Twitter post that a family was evacuated from their home when high levels of carbon monoxide were detected in the house.

Officials searching for the cause of the carbon monoxide discovered the family's chimney was blocked by an owl that had become stuck.

Hamilton County Dog Wardens were summoned to the scene and were able to extract the bird from the chimney.

The owl was not injured and was released at the scene.

Rugby Player Feigns Injury During Match to Surprise Girlfriend with Marriage Proposal (Watch)

Image

A rugby player shocked his girlfriend by feigning a leg injury during a match—only to get down on one knee and propose.

Chris Robinson choreographed a rugby tackle with his whole team in on the elaborate plan that would catch his partner by surprise.

Called over to the pitch, Amanda Tuckwell, newly trained in first aid, believed that it must be serious, but when she arrived, the 30-year-old rolled over onto one knee and pulled out an engagement ring.

43-year-old Amanda thought he’d broken his leg, but recalled, “When he got up I thought he must have been in shock but then he got on one knee. I was very, very surprised.”

The couple from Halifax, West Yorkshire, had been together for five years when Chris started planning the proposal two months ago, waiting for a home game to make it special.

He was playing for amateur side Greetland All Rounders on Mar 18 at their Yorkshire League match against Kirkburton Courgars—and thought the surprise would also tickle the opposition.

“Amanda knew something was coming and I wanted to do it in a way she wouldn’t expect,” Chris, a primary school teacher from Halifax, explained. “If I’d booked a trip somewhere she would have guessed what was going on.

“I was a bit nervous. I was worried about what the other team would say but we were winning comfortably so it wasn’t a close game. I wouldn’t have done it otherwise!”

Amanda agreed, adding: “I usually know what Chris is going to do before he does, so it had to be something different. I was shocked.”

The happy couple who met on the dating app Bumble are planning a low-key registrar wedding followed by a big party with friends and family, to help them save their pennies to buy their first house together.

The video filmed on the referee’s GoPro headcam has since gone viral on Rugby Mad Dad’s Facebook page.

Beastly 6ft-tall dog is 'mistaken for a lion' and makes shocked walkers cross road

Image

Jamal Miah adopted Kenzo, a Central Asian Shepherd after his friend decided to rehome the pooch when Kenzo grew too big.

Despite only being three years old, Kenzo already weighs 85kg (187 lbs) and stands at six feet tall on his hind legs.

Making the beast of a pup not only taller but also heavier than the average fully-grown man.

And Jamal says people are so taken aback by the huge dog, they often cross the street to avoid walking by him.

Image

White Kenzo is often mistaken for a lion – and he certainly eats like the king of the jungle.

Jamal from East London says the big dog eats five pounds of raw meat every day – setting him back a whopping £1,200 a year.

The dog owner said: "We saw him and said 'oh my god'. He's so big and he's just a puppy.

"It's 50/50. Some people are scared and cross the street when they see him, and others just want to stroke and pet him.

Image

"People will question me, like: 'What is this dog'? They'll say 'what is that'? 'Is that a pony'? 'Is it a lion'?

"My daughters were scared of him initially because of his size. But after a few walks, they got used to him. He knows they're my daughters, so he's their natural protector now."

Jamal has had to dog-proof his home to accommodate the big dog’s massive size, including huge iron gates to stop Kenzo from crashing through the fence in his back garden.

He has also had to hire a professional dog trainer to condition him into accepting going inside.

So far, the owner thinks he has spent about £10,000 caring for his dog including food, training, and general maintenance.

Jamal, the founder of youth development program OMG Education, said: "A central Asian shepherd is not a dog for the beginner dog owner."

Five children rescued from Staten Island sewer after climbing inside and getting lost

Image

Five children were rescued after climbing into a Staten Island, N.Y. sewer tunnel and getting lost, authorities said.

The boys entered the sewer at Clove Lakes Park near the Staten Island Zoo Tuesday evening, the New York City Fire Department said. After they could not find their way out, one boy called 911 for help.

"We're like ... We're stuck in the sewers," the child said in a 911 audio call released by the department. "We like ... yeah, we walked a lot."

The dispatcher instructed the children to call out for help as teams were dispatched to the area.

Rescuers were able to figure out where the children entered the sewer. They had left their jackets and backpacks on the ground outside the entrance.

Because the children had walked for a bit in the tunnel, FDNY Chief John Hodgens said it took firefighters a little while to figure out exactly where they were. Rescuers had to open manhole covers until they could hear the children calling out for help.

"It was a little bit challenging but FDNY dispatchers did a great job of continuing to communicate and try to pinpoint exactly where they were," Hodgens said at a news conference.

Officials believe the children had been in the sewer for about an hour. The fire chief said it was "amazing" that the boy's cellphone still worked inside the sewer.

All of the children were taken to the hospital to be assessed, the fire department said. One boy had a minor injury to his leg.

Why the hottest place on Earth is being used to understand aliens

Image

Home to many weather extremes, one national park stands above the rest for NASA scientists.

Near the California-Nevada border, Death Valley National Park is the hottest place on Earth, with summer temperatures reaching 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade. It is also the driest place in North America, with an average rainfall of fewer than 2 inches.

The harsh conditions and dry, largely barren landscape of Death Valley, however, have made the park an ideal place for research about another inhospitable – and alien – environment.

Mars, specifically 3 billion years ago, looked similar to the Death Valley National Park we know today, the NPS said. Because of this, scientists seeking to understand the Red Planet use the park as a testing ground for gear, equipment, and hypotheses related to Martian missions.

For example, in May 2019, NASA tested an engineering model of the Lander Vision System (LVS) that later helped guide Perseverance to a safe touchdown on Mars. NASA said the LVS was an integral part of a guidance system that steered Perseverance away from hazardous areas on the Red Planet.

In addition to testing equipment at Death Valley National Park, scientists have also studied the park’s terrain to better understand the topography of Mars. Since the park has very little vegetation, its topographical features are exposed and accessible for research.

Some of those features include river or alluvial fans. In Death Valley, old river fans formed by water flowing out of a canyon and spreading sediment in a triangular or fan-like shape as it flowed down a steep hill.

NASA scientists have compared this erosion and movement in sediment to those that formed river fans in the Gale Crater on Mars.

Other features scientists have studied in Death Valley include the Ubehebe Crater, a 600-foot-deep volcanic crater, and the aptly named Mars Hill, which has basalt boulders left over from the valley’s volcanic past.

Both of which are geologic features that are similar to those on the Red Planet, which was once alive with volcanic activity.

Relocated elk return to Utah golf course one week later
By Ben Hooper
Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter

March 27 (UPI) -- A herd of elk relocated from a Utah golf course near a pair of busy highways returned to the same spot a week later, officials confirmed.

State officials closed portions of Interstate 80 and Interstate 215 on March 19 to relocate the herd of elk that had taken up residence at the Salt Lake Country Club in Salt Lake City. Officials said the elk had caused numerous collisions and other traffic problems by repeatedly wandering onto the highways.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources confirmed about 20 of the elk had returned to the golf course during the weekend.

The herd had been relocated by a DWR crew who created a human chain to slowly approach the animals and encourage them to cross the highways and return to Parleys Canyon. The crew guided the elk up the mountains and a helicopter was then used to ensure the elk traveled a good distance up the mountain and away from busy roadways.

The DWR said there are no current plans to attempt another relocation after the animals returned, but officials said they will discuss the possibility of further efforts once the snowy weather ends.

Hotel EastLink – Getting a Room Here Is Literally Impossible
March 27th, 2023*

Located alongside a motorway outside of Melbourne, in Australia’s Victoria state, lies Hotel EastLink. At least what looks like a high-rise hotel, because in reality, it’s just an unusual sculpture.

Designed by local artist Callum Morton, the Hotel EastLink was unveiled in 2007, and it has been confusing motorists ever since. It’s not as large as a high-rise hotel – 20 meters tall, 12m wide, and 5m thick – but driving past it at high speed for the first time, it’s really hard to tell, so it’s no wonder that people actually look it up online and actually call in for reservations. To make it even more confusing, at night, some of the windows are lit up, which makes it seem like some of the rooms are occupied. But there are no rooms, and the building itself can’t be entered, because the whole thing is a sculpture designed purely for ornamental purposes.

Image
Photo: Rory Hyde/Flickr

“Motorists will view it from the car as an actual hotel and perhaps over time as a strangely de-scaled prop that has escaped a theme park or film set,” artist Callum Morton described the concept of this project in the early 2000s. Now, almost two decades later, his creation still plays with people’s minds as they pass it on the EastLink toll road in Melbourne’s Dandenong neighborhood.

At first, the large rectangular building with a big, red ‘HOTEL’ sign at the top seems pretty normal, but then you start to realize that it’s not as imposing as it’s supposed to be, and that it is located in the middle of a barren field, and that’s when things start getting confusing. But that’s all by design…

“I think it’s kind of interesting how putting something in a space that is slightly beguiling or is a little bit strange, how that maybe changes the way people think about art or practice,” Callum Morton said about his unique artwork.

Interestingly, Hotel EastLink even has its own website, if you want to learn more about it.

Thieves steal 8ft gorilla from Scots garden centre leaving owner raging

An 8ft gorilla has been stolen from outside a Clyde Valley garden centre - leaving owners baffled by his sudden disappearance.

Thieves made off with Gary, a statue made of glass fibre, from Reynard Nursery in Carluke at around midnight on.

Owner Andrew Scott, 56, said thieves could be seen pulling up in a white van on CCTV before unbolting Gary from the ground before putting him inside.

Image
Thieves made off with Gary the glass fibre Gorilla from Reynard Nursery in Carluke

He told reporters: "The CCTV pictures are very grainy but a white van pulls up and several people get out. Gary was bolted down to decking so it looks like they unbolted him and carefully placed him in the van. I would say it was planned.

"When we looked back on the CCTV, an unknown car pulled up at around 10.30pm. It wasn't a car we recognised so I'd say it was connected."

Image
Gary is over 8ft tall

Andrew said staff were shocked when they arrived at work this morning to see Gary had gone awol from his usual place, having previously been situated inside the centre.

He continued: "I actually arrived and didn't notice he was gone. It wasn't until my son pointed out to me that he wasn't there that I realised someone must have taken him. We couldn't believe it.

Gary the Gorilla has become a huge part of the family-run business for the last decade. He is known to sit at the entrance to the garden centre to welcome customers every day.

Staff members regularly dress him up in line with what's going on in the world. Gary wore his PPE throughout the pandemic, is known to don a Santa hat at Christmas and also recently "suffered with monkeypox", being donned in big red dots.

Image
Andrew bought Gary 10 years ago

Andrew, who paid £3,000 for Gary 10 years ago, added: "We have no idea why anyone would have taken him. He's sat at the entrance to our nursery for the last eight years and has never been bothered. I don't understand it to be honest.

"He's just a bit of fun and has been used as a gimmick for our business for the last 10 years."

"I mean what are they going to do with him? He's huge and old and not very discreet."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 8.35am on Monday, we received a report of the theft of an 8ft fiberglass gorilla from outside a premises on Mauldslie Road, Carluke.

“Enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible. Anyone with information should call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0588 of Monday, 27 March, 2023.”

Brainless blob capable of human-like behaviours has scientists absolutely stumped

Image

In today's day and age, some of the discoveries scientists come up with are truly quite incredible and make us say: "Eh, how on earth did you find that?"

However, even after heaps of research and head-scratching, some things that are discovered even manage to stump scientists.

This one is quite incredible really, and I'm kind of struggling to get my head around if I'm being perfectly honest.

It essentially involves a brainless blob that is capable of human-like behaviours and it has left many scientists completely baffled.

These brainless blobs are known as slime molds - bright, yellow organisms found on decaying logs and many other moist areas.

Along with no existence of a brain, slime molds also have no neurons, with them consisting of just a single, giant cell.

Image

But somehow, they are capable of performing complicated and intelligent behaviours that does put some of us humans to shame.

Scientist Audrey Dussutour is one of those who has studied these these slime molds, in particular Physarum polycephalum.

These pesky little molds can make decisions such as escaping from traps and breaking out of Petri dishes, and can even escape the lab all together.

In its smallest form, Physarum exist as just microscopic cells, which will actively swim about.

But these calls are attracted to each other, so will usually merge together when they swarm, creating a single giant cell known as a plasmodium.

The cell is not exactly fast though, as it can only move at around 4cm per hour. But still, it is quite remarkable it can even move in the first place.

Speaking about its behaviour, science journalist Ed Yong wrote in the Guardian: "It behaves like a colony. Every part rhythmically expands and contracts, pushing around the fluid inside."

Image

As a result, Physarum can perform some quite remarkable behaviours, sounding like something straight out of an episode of Black Mirror.

First of all, they can smell food, as like humans, they have receptors all over the cell body that tells them that food is nearby.

Not only that, but Physarum can also pulsate its way to food, as the slime mold's pulses quicken after smelling the grub.

The protoplasm starts to flow in the direction of the food, with the hungry slime right on its tale.

A study on the cells also found that Physarum can potentially be able to remember where they have been, as they do not retrace their steps.

They do this by leaving some rather disgusting and slimy breadcrumbs as a form of an 'external memory'.

When the smile mold is on the run from the lab once more, the breadcrumbs tell them that they've explored this area and to look elsewhere.

Feeling a tiny bit freaked out? Me too.

Bear plays with soccer ball, climbs on trampoline in New York yard

A New York woman who spotted a black bear playing in her yard captured video of the animal climbing onto her family's trampoline.

Anna Cory-Watson said she glanced out her window in Wappingers Falls and was shocked to see a bear investigating the various items in her yard.

"I was elated when I saw the bear outside my window," Cory-Watson told Newsweek. "I knew I was seeing something I was unlikely to ever see again. And that was before it started playing with the soccer ball. Everything that unfolded in front of me felt surreal."

Cory-Watson said she knew she had to document the visit.

"I immediately grabbed my phone and started taking pictures," she told The Dodo. "I couldn't believe it."

Cory-Watson's video, which she posted to YouTube, shows the bear playing with a soccer ball, wrestling with a garden hose, carrying a broom and tentatively bouncing on the trampoline.

"The bear played in our yard for a couple of hours," Cory-Watson said. "At one point we thought it had taken off but when it came back, it got in the trampoline."
