Real reason we eat chocolate eggs at Easter and the mysterious origins of Easter bunny

Image

Although it has its origins in religion, for many Easter is also synonymous with eating copious amounts of chocolate, usually in the shape of eggs.

For months the supermarkets have been keeping their shelves stocked with all different shapes and sizes of chocolate Easter Eggs, even ones that are filled with your favourite booze.

A lot of the treats around this time of year tend to be chocolate-based, but have you ever given any thought as to why, at at time when many commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, that is? And what does that all have to do with the Easter bunny?

Here we take a closer look at the reason why you'll likely be chomping down on chocolate this weekend.

Image

Although Easter is a Christian holiday, the reason we eat chocolate eggs is actually because of paganism.

According to Christianity, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, and rose again on Easter Sunday, which is what we're marking at this time of year.

However, the giving and receiving of eggs (real ones) is thought to be a Pagan tradition, as it symbolises new life. It would often appear in pagan festivals as a way to celebrate the ending of winter and the arrival of spring.

However, for Christians, the egg also symbolises the moment in the Bible when Jesus was resurrected after his crucifixion.

As the years went on, the tradition grew to present children with chocolate versions as gifts, rather than real ones.

Chocolate Easter eggs first appeared in Europe in the 19th century, with France and Germany taking the lead. In the UK it was J.S Fry & Sons who produced the first chocolate egg in 1873.

Cadbury then started producing the modern Easter Egg we're used to today two years later, in 1875.

Where did the Easter bunny originate?

The exact origins of the Easter bunny remains a mystery, but there are several theories connected to the loveable Easter character.

One theory is again based on pagan tradition, more specifically the festival of Eostre, the goddess of fertility. Her animal symbol was the rabbit – a creature known for energetic breeding.

The earliest evidence of a more modern Easter bunny is the 1700s, when German immigrants settled in the US and transported their egg-laying hare tradition called "Oschter Haws," or Easter hare. The hare would supposedly lay the colourful eggs as gifts to children who behaved well.

In preparation for this, Children would make nests for the Easter hare so it could lay eggs. Eventually this tradition spread and the fabled Easter bunny would make make other deliveries too, such as toys, chocolate and sweets.

Niagara-on-the-lake may be known for its idyllic charm, beautiful streets, and expansive wineries, however, a local passage has become a dark tourism destination.

Running beneath the Grand Trunk railroad tracks, an old arched limestone stone tunnel was created in the early 1900s as a drainage passage to keep the tracks from submerging beneath floor water, and prevent farmers fields and crops from flooding.

Image

The seemingly ordinary tunnel however gained an ominous reputation, rife with ghost stories and claims it was haunted. According to an old legend, the tunnel still holds the screams of a dying girl who was burned alive inside it, earning it the nickname "The Screaming Tunnel".

One version of the story says that a local farm caught fire one night, and a young girl ran screaming from the home while her hair and clothes were ablaze. Unfortunately, she collapsed in the tunnel and died from her burns.

Image

A second more sinister version claims her death was at the hand of her father.

The story is that a family of three once lived in the small community, but the father was an alcoholic known to mistreat his wife and daughter.

Image

After countless terrifying nights of his abuse, the wife had enough, threatening to leave with her daughter. She planned her escape, but he found out.

A horrible fight ensued, in which he knocked his wife unconscious. The daughter managed to escape the house and hid in the tunnel. Hearing a noise from within, he went into a drunken rage and found her.

Image

It was said he doused her in gasoline and lit a wooden match, burning her alive while she screamed.

While there are several iterations of the legend, all stories agree on one thing: the tunnel is still haunted by the young girl's spirit. It is said if you light a flame within the tunnel around midnight, you can hear her scream, and she will blow out your flame.

Image

Though skeptics insist the "scream" people claim to hear is simply a midnight train passing through in the distance, the legend was pervasive enough to continue to draw visitors from all over.

If ghost hunting is your thing, there are some other memorable haunts in Niagara-on-the-Lake to experience besides The Screaming Tunnel. The Olde Angel Inn, Royal George Theatre, and the Prince of Wales Hotel are also reportedly haunted by resident ghosts.

April 4 (UPI) -- An Egyptian swimmer put his skills to the test and broke a Guinness World Record when he swam for over 7 miles while wearing handcuffs.

Shehab Allam, 31, claimed the Guinness World Records title for farthest distance swimming wearing handcuffs when he completed his 7.24-mile swim in the open waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Allam broke the previous record of 5.35 miles, set by U.S. swimmer Benjamin Katzman in 2021.

The record-breaking swim took Allam about six hours to complete.

"During the training, I used to attract curious glances when I have the handcuffs on. To avoid drawing too much attention, I prefer to swim in quieter areas, typically near the limit line of the beaches, although I still receive some stares," Allam told GWR.

Allam said he might someday be able to break his own record, as he is still perfecting the technique he calls the "double-arm pull and modified sidestroke."

"The feeling of being among the record-breaking elite gives me a sense of being a superhero, and it drives me to maintain my position in the records for as long as possible," he said.

Spring Cleaning Tips to Get You Ready for Summer
April 6, 2023*

• A lot of grocery stores have a bin for recycling plastic bags.

Spring cleaning is such an easy and nice way to prepare your house for summer. Here are the best tips for cleaning you didn’t know you needed.

Spring Cleaning Pet Hair Hack
Image
All you need to get pet hair off of your furniture is a sock and a hand mixer. Sounds strange? It kind of is, but it works. Slip a sock over one of the beaters on a hand mixer and secure it with a rubber band. Lightly mist your furniture with water and turn the mixer on low. From there, lightly press the sock mixer against the cushion and move it back and forth over the hairy area.

Tennis (or dryer) Balls for Comforters
Image
Washing your sheets seems like a no-brainer for most of us, but it’s also important to clean your comforters and pillows about every six months or so, in perfect time for spring cleaning. Prevent blankets and comforters from balling up in the dryer by using tennis balls or dryer balls. The balls bounce around and help to fluff your items in the dryer.

Spring Cleaning Shower Curtain Hack
Image
Have you ever cleaned your shower curtain? If you haven’t, then you probably should and this shower curtain hack makes it super simple. To wash your shower curtain, all you have to do is throw it into the washing machine. Tips for washing your shower curtain in this way are to use warm water, not cold, to use your regular laundry detergent and no fabric softener, set your washer to normal cycle and don’t put your shower curtain into the dryer.

Clear out Your Pantry

Cleaning out your old spices and sauces allows you to see what you actually have and what you need. Some products don’t stay good forever, and lots need to be refrigerated after opening, like ketchup and yeast. Even things like spices that “stay good” for what seems like forever will start to lose their taste and potency over time.

Declutter Your Plastic Bags for Spring Cleaning
Image
I just know there’s a place in your house where you keep all your plastic bags. A lot of grocery stores have a bin for recycling plastic bags. The next time you run to the store, grab all your extra bags and see if they can be recycled! Make sure to reuse the ones you do keep, as they’re handy for lots of other tasks. Everyone has heaps of plastic bags so this is perfect for spring cleaning.

Coconut Oil for Floors
Image
Mix one part coconut oil and one part baking soda to use as a floor cleaner. This mixture can remove scuffs from most floors. You can also get up dried paint from linoleum using this coconut mix.

Declutter Your Counter
Image
The more things on your counter, the more things you have to keep clean. Get rid of your appliances that do the same things, you only need one. For the appliances you only use every now and then, store them in your pantry or cabinets. Hiding away things you don’t use all the time will keep them clean and you counter less cramped.

Woman goes viral for buying a 1998 Ford Escort for $289 a month for the next 84 months [PHOTO]

Image

During tax season, people are often using their returns to buy outrageous things. Normally, people will buy an older model of luxury car, which they usually end up taking a loss on. Other times, people price themselves out by buying a new car that is out of their normal budget. However, there is a woman who has gone viral from Facebook for buying a 1998 Ford Escort under a horrible deal. Not only is she paying over $200 a month for the car, she is paying on it for the next seven years.

Social media has highlighted that people spend too much time focusing on other people. Some people show off for the sake of impressing others. Meanwhile, other people show off for the sake of proving others wrong. In any case, there are people who spend their time making fun of people who are showing off. Those people often liken themselves to be smarter than the ones showing off. In all honesty, all of those kinds of people are misusing social media.

However, a situation like this with the Ford Escort does deserve a second look. Anybody in need of a serviceable car should look at what this woman did and do the exact opposite. This woman has purchased a car that can’t be worth much more than $1,500. While she is spending less than $300 a month for her car, the car is already twenty-five years old. This lady has gone viral, because of the promo post, where she is making $289 monthly payments for the next 84 months, which is seven years.

Missing mannequin in Cornwall village turns up on telegraph pole with new 'friend'

Village residents have been left in disbelief after a missing speed awareness mannequin turned up - at the top of a telegraph pole. The mannequin, which disappeared from the roadside at Mawnan Smith a couple of weeks ago, where it is thought it was placed in a bid to raise speed awareness in the village.

A local resident told reporters that the new fixture arrived after the speed limit within the village was recently reduced to 20mph, which is part of a scheme to roll out the lower limits across Cornwall. The mannequin, which sports a high-vis vest and hard hat, was placed outside somebody's home with a sign reading '20mph'.

The resident claimed that the mannequin was taken around two weeks ago and nobody knew where it went. However, in a rather peculiar turn of events, it has now been located at the top of a telegraph pole - alongside a blow up doll and some added changes including a moustache and 40mph sign, instead of 20.

Image
The mannequin has reappeared at the top of a telegraph pole sporting a moustache and 40mph sign

The village resident said: "This mannequin went missing a few weeks ago. And now has appeared on a post in Mawnan Smith. We had a reduced speed limit to 20mph in the village and someone put it outside their house with a '20' sign on.

"It got taken about two weeks ago and just appeared on a telegraph pole up the road from the original place - with a moustache and a 40mph sign instead. Nobody in the village liked it so I think that’s why it’s happened."

Other photos doing the rounds on social media have featured the two figures in different - and rather racy - positions.

It's not clear how the mannequin got to be at the top of the pole, but some residents have seen the humorous side. The local resident said: "It also was placed next to the other doll as you can see which makes it funnier."

Birds defend their nest from giant lizard

Image

A pair of fierce Water thick-knees faced off against a large monitor lizard in an attempt to protect the eggs in their nest.

Bjorn Borge Lunde recently had the opportunity to witness this unforgettable experience while enjoying a glass of wine at Rio Vista Lodge in Malelane, South Africa. He shared his experience with LatestSightings.com.

"We were sitting at a table in the restaurant. It was late afternoon, and we were enjoying a glass of wine in the restaurant. Our table being in front of the locale, we had the perfect view of the river and the embankment. We had noticed some movement down on a sand bank."

"A large monitor lizard was causing the resident Water thick-knees some trouble. His mere presence was a discomforting factor for the little birds."

Monitor lizards are large, carnivorous lizards found in many parts of the world. They have a varied diet that includes insects, small mammals, and birds. Eggs form an essential part of their diet, and they are known to dig into the nests of birds to feast on their eggs.

Water thick-knees, on the other hand, are shorebirds found in Africa, southern Asia, and Australia. They are known for their loud, piercing calls and are often seen near rivers or other bodies of water. These birds are good parents and take good care of their young ones well. They build their nests on the ground, usually near water, and both parents take turns incubating the eggs and taking care of the chicks. They are fiercely protective of their young and will fight off any predators that come near their nest.

"The birds would attack the monitor from two sides, or they would try to flank him. They never gave in and kept going at him constantly. They were fierce and showed no fear whatsoever."

"Finally, the monitor had enough and went off. We never could find out where the nest was. It is essential to have patience and enjoy every moment, as you never know what you might come across. Observing the behavior of different animals can provide insight into their lives and help us understand them better. With the right attitude and a keen eye, anyone can have an incredible experience while on safari."

Woman keeps unopened Easter egg for 63 years paying £80 a month to keep it cool

Image

Unlike other teens her age, when 13 year old Hillion Fern was given a gorgeous Easter egg by her father, Aubrey Daulman, from a local shop called Sharps, she didn't immediately tuck in and devour it.

This is because she found it "too pretty to eat", she simply knew that she needed to keep hold of it.

The chocolate egg in question is decorated with yellow icing in the shape of daffodils and contains a bag of toffees and chocolates.

Hillion has now amazingly kept the Easter egg for a whopping 63 years, and the self-confessed chocoholic now spends £80 a month on a cool storage container to keep the chocolate from melting.

Image

Hillion, a retired wildlife trust worker says she still remembers the day she was given the egg in 1960 and she plans to keep it for the rest of her life.

The egg is stored in Warwickshire, despite her no longer living in the area.

Hillion, who has two grown-up children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, said: "I still remember the day I was given it.

"It was simply too pretty that I didn't want to eat it.

"I thought to myself, 'I'll keep it until Whitsun' but I then never ate it, so then I thought, 'Oh, I will keep it until Christmas' and then Christmas came and went.

"It became a bit of a challenge after that to see how long I could hold out."

And she's now been holding out 63 years and doesn't have plans to give into temptation.

She continued: "I am quite impressed with my willpower because I have always loved chocolate.

"There was something special about the egg I wanted to keep and after a while it became too precious to eat.

"To protect the egg from melting I paid for it go into storage. It might seem silly but I want to make sure it remains in perfect condition.

"It's in Warwickshire but I have moved to be nearer my daughter in Wales but when I did live nearby I would actually go and visit it occasionally.

"The sugar daffodils used to be bright yellow but now they are turning a bit brown but the egg is still intact and all of the chocolates and toffees are still inside.

"I couldn't eat it now, even if I wanted to, but it has just become part of the family now and I will keep it forever."

Dramatic Moment Skier Rescued a Snowboarder Who Was Buried Head First in Snow and Running Out of Air (Watch)

Image

A hero skier saved the life of a snowboarder completely buried head-first in a massive snow drift.

Francis Zuber was maneuvering around the tops of trees in deep powder on Mt. Baker, in northwestern Washington state, probably without any indication he might end up in the right place at the right time to be a hero.

It was a one-in-a-million chance that Zuber spotted him at all. He had only just fallen off his own skis in the bumpy ‘tree well’ just a few feet away from a trapped snowboarder.

When he spotted the man’s snowboard wriggling around, just above a large drift, he realized it was still attached to someone below.

From the downhill perspective, a tree was blocking the snowboard from the view of oncoming skiers, and only because Zuber fell into an adjacent drift did he happen to see it.

Francis’s head cam shows him approaching the scene and asking “you alright?”.

But after receiving no response, he hurries over as best he can in the deep snow before removing his skis, pulling himself up the snow mound, and frantically digging with his hands.

Zuber can be heard reassuring the snowboarder until the man’s reflective visor pokes out of the snow and then his mouth, at which point he takes a big gulp of air.

“Thank you,” the snowboarder says. “Yeah, no problem,” Zuber replied, adding that they were both going to catch their breath.

“All I’ll say for now is the mountains don’t care how much skill or experience you have,” Zuber wrote alongside his own uploaded video. “They don’t even care if you and your ski partners are doing everything right.”

Zuber recommends every backcountry skier and snowboarder take the ‘Avy 1’ which is an avalanche safety and rescue course.

“Take an Avy 1 course, and get trained on what to do if you find yourself in this situation, and always look out for each other out there,” Zuber said.

Police: Man posing as officer pulled over real cop

(WJW) — A Michigan man was arrested after impersonating a police officer and pulling over a real, off-duty cop in a fake traffic stop.

Christian Mansoor, 18, of Macomb Township was driving a silver BMW with flashing red and blue lights on Monday, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Around 11 p.m. in Rochester Hills, an off-duty Waterford Township officer reported a suspect who was trying to conduct a traffic stop.

According to the release, Mansoor passed the off-duty officer and she followed him.

Once Mansoor was confronted, the off-duty officer identified herself and asked for his identification.

Mansoor claimed he was a Detroit police officer. He then went to his car to get his ID and then drove away, the release said.

The off-duty officer followed Mansoor to a trailer park but lost sight of his vehicle.

Deputies later found the vehicle and Mansoor, who was switching license plates to a different BMW, according to the release.

He was arrested after a short foot chase.

Mansoor was arraigned Wednesday on a misdemeanor charge of impersonating a public officer. He was released on a $5000 personal bond, according to the release.

Dairy Queen Location Searching for Their Stolen 15-Foot Spoon Is Offering Free Blizzards as a Reward

Image

A Dairy Queen in Phoenix remains perplexed after their giant spoon statue was stolen last week.

The 15-foot statue, modeled after the plastic red spoons Dairy Queen gives with their Blizzards, was secured against the side of the building. According to owners Puja Kalra and Raman Kalra, it was a popular spot for customers to snap a photo.

The Kalras expressed their concern for the missing spoon, which was stolen between late Friday night and early Saturday morning. After watching their surveillance video, the couple thinks the perpetrators had done this before.

"They were so precise about it like they had done it before," Raman told the Associated Press. "They just wiggled their way through and made sure the spoon was not damaged."

The video allegedly showed two people unscrewing the statue and then taking off on a "small motorbike." The Phoenix police are investigating the theft but have not identified any suspects, according to the AP.

Image

Raman told the outlet that the spoon would cost $7,000 to replace.

"I appeal to the person. This spoon is too big to eat anything," Raman said. "We want you to bring it back. We will not ask any questions."

In a plea to the community for help searching for the spoon, staff at the store's location will start wearing T-shirts that say "Where's my spoon?" They also posted flyers around Phoenix for tips about the spoon's location. The reward is one Blizzard treat in every flavor of the summer menu, which was announced earlier this week.

Image

The lineup of seasonal flavors, now available for a limited time, includes new additions like the peanut butter puppy chow blizzard which combines vanilla soft serve, puppy chow bites (cereal mixture), peanut butter and chocolate chunks. Also making its DQ debut is the Oreo brookie blizzard. The ultra-chocolatey dessert is made with vanilla soft serve and mixed with Oreos and brownie-cookie pieces.

For the returning goodies, DQ brought back the s'mores blizzard — which consists of soft serve, marshmallow-filled chocolate pieces and graham crackers. The remaining summer items are the cotton candy blizzard, which is made with cotton candy sprinkles and soft serve, and the choco-dipped strawberry blizzard blended with soft serve and strawberry and chocolate chunks.

Best of all, fans can score these seasonal items for a low price. In honor of blizzards being invented in 1985, shop-goers can snag one of the iconic sweets for 85 cents via the chain's app from April 10 to 23.

Police chase 78-year-old woman after she was accused of robbing bank for THIRD time
Bonnie Gooch, from Missouri, US, has been charged after Pleasant Hill Police Department responded to reports of a robbery at Goppert Financial Bank on Wednesday

Image

An elderly 78-year-old woman has been arrested after she was accused of robbing a bank for the third time.

Bonnie Gooch, from Missouri, US, was charged with attempted stealing after she was accused of robbing Goppert Financial Bank on Wednesday afternoon.

Pleasant Hill Police Department responded to reports of a bank robbery at around 3.20pm and while en route were given a description of the suspect and her car.

Officers located Ms Gooch after conducting a traffic stop where she was arrested and taken into custody without incident.

According to police, the chase was "tense" but when officers were confronted with the elderly woman it was a "little shocking", police chiefs admitted.

Pleasant Hill Police Chief Thomas Wright said: "Obviously it was a tense situation. But when the hands of an elderly woman come out of the car and that is who is driving the suspect vehicle, it’s a little shocking.”

She was charged by Cass County prosecutors Thursday who set her bail at $25,000 (£20,000).

Police said the suspect will be referred to hospital services to see if she needs any help.

Authorities confirmed the suspect has previous after she was arrested in 2020 for raiding a bank in Lee's Summit, Missouri.

She was 75-year-sold when she committed the crime and was later convicted for the robbery.

Her son admitted Ms Gooch had warned she was going to rob a bank after a dispute with her family.

According to court documents at the time, her son said she “was off her rocker” and had left the house “angry, saying she was going to rob a bank.”

Ms Gooch's sentence for the crime was suspended and she was released on supervised probation, which later expired in November 2021.

In the past two robberies, she handed a note to bank workers demanding money, according to police.

The note demanded $3,000 (£2,000) and described how the money should be divided up into sections. She took the cash and left the bank.

Ms Gooch was later stopped by an officer and reportedly had a black wig, hat and $3,000 in the car as a disguise for her robbery.

Furthermore, she was arrested in 1977 for a third time after she was found guilty of robbing a bank in California when she was 32.

Spoon spotted: Arizona Dairy Queen’s big red spoon found

PHOENIX (AP) — A giant red spoon that was stolen from an Arizona Dairy Queen and sparked a mystery on social media was found Monday morning, and it’s partly thanks to Pokémon GO.

Michael Foster, 52, was playing the outdoor mobile game when he spotted the 15-foot (4.5-meter) spoon around 7 a.m. It was lying on the ground behind a fence that surrounds a Phoenix middle school baseball field, just 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the scene of the heist.

“The first thing I did was send a picture to my wife and I said, ‘It’s the spoon.’ She said call the police,” Foster told The Associated Press.

“I can confirm the Dairy Queen ‘red spoon’ was located and recovered this morning,” Sgt. Brian Bower said in an email Monday.

Detectives are continuing to search for the suspects who took the spoon, he added. Police are encouraging the public to submit any tips.

A school maintenance man came over and pushed it over the fence to Foster, who handed it to Phoenix police.

“I set it down. They actually did the lifting after we got it over the fence,” Foster said. “They strapped it to the top of a police cruiser.”

Foster said nobody else was around and the school was just opening when he saw it.

“I did kind of look around and was like ‘What?’ One guy did finally come by and was like, ‘Is that what I think it is?’ Yeah, that’s the spoon,” Foster said.

Phoenix police over the weekend released surveillance footage from March 25 that showed two men and one woman get the spoon out of its base and put it on a large flatbed connected to a pickup truck.

Owners Raman and Puja Kalra said last week that they hoped to get it back. Getting another spoon made, delivered and then installed would cost over $7,000. They even resorted to creative strategies such as printing T-shirts for staff that said “Where’s My Spoon?”

Raman Kalra confirmed Monday in an email he was on his way to pick up the spoon from police.

“We are happy to have our spoon back and we are looking forward to the neighborhood creating more smiles and stories with this now world-famous spoon,” he said.

Dairy Queen is known for doling out plastic red spoons with their soft serve Blizzards. The Dairy Queen where the theft happened is the only Arizona location with a large red spoon. It’s been a popular Instagram photo spot.

The couple, who own 34 locations, also offered a reward of free Blizzard treats for anyone who helped facilitate the spoon’s return.

Foster said he doesn’t need a reward.

“Honestly, we’re just glad they’re gonna get their spoon back,” he said.

20-Year-Old Boiled Egg Looks Like a Blood-Red Ruby
April 3rd, 2023*

A Chinese woman stunned the internet with photos of a 20-year-old boiled egg that she had preserved as a young girl and then forgotten about. It has fossilized and now resembles a ruby.

The woman, surnamed Fu, posted photos of the fossilized egg on Chinese social media platform Douban, where they quickly attracted people’s attention and went viral. It wasn’t long before mainstream news outlets started contacting her about the unique egg, wanting to know its story. Apparently, the woman’s mother bought it for her 20 years ago, when she was still in primary school, because it was unusually small in size. Her mother boiled it for her to eat at school, but after storing it in a side pocket of her backpack, she forgot about it for three days and dared not eat if after that, thinking it had spoiled. But she didn’t want to throw the delicate egg away either, so she put it on top of their refrigerator and completely forgot about it for a couple of months.

When the woman’s mother found the egg again, it had already changed color to a dark, burgundy red, so she decided to keep it in a small jewelry box instead of throwing it away. As the years passed, Fu moved out of her parents’ house and forgot about the preserved egg, but her mother recently found it while cleaning and showed it to her. Not only had the egg fossilized further, but it now had the smooth texture of a plastic ball, with fine cracks all over it.

The photos of the decades-old egg made quite an impression on social media users. Some called it a ‘pharaoh egg’, while others wondered why it hadn’t rotted all this time. Mrs. Fu didn’t have all the answers, but she said that it might have something to do with the fact that it might have something to do with the cold, dry winter conditions in the area where she grew up. Experts have yet to confirm her theory.

If you think this egg looks strange, you’ve probably never seen ‘century eggs‘, the Chinese delicacy that looks utterly inedible.
