Man who stabbed girlfriend was shocked when she woke up hours later, prosecutors say: ‘I thought you were dead’ :D

CHICAGO — A Chicago man who stabbed his girlfriend until she lost consciousness was shocked when she woke up several hours later, prosecutors said.

“I thought you were dead,” Mark Williams allegedly told the woman before saying that he had been trying to figure out how to hide her body, officials said.

Judge Ankur Srivastava held Williams without bail during a bond hearing Monday afternoon.

Williams, 28, and the 23-year-old woman argued Thursday night at the woman’s Pullman apartment, Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Dale-Schmidt told Srivastava.

Ultimately, Williams hit the woman with the back of his hand, then stabbed her with a steak knife from the kitchen until she lost consciousness, Dale-Schmidt alleged.

The woman woke up Friday morning with Williams asleep next to her. She was unable to move due to her injuries and severe pain, said Dale-Schmidt.

When Williams woke up, he told her he thought she had died and needed to hide her body so he wouldn’t go to jail, Dale-Schmidt continued. She said the woman asked Williams to get help, but he refused and instead poured alcohol on her wounds, causing severe pain.

The victim woke up again Friday afternoon and called a witness, explaining what happened and saying she could not move and would be unable to let paramedics into the house.

Image

A relative eventually gained access to the woman’s apartment with the help of a security guard and called 911. The guard took the couple’s 4-year-old daughter out of the house until authorities arrived, Dale-Schmidt said.

Chicago police found Williams asleep in the apartment and took him into custody.

Dale-Shmidt detailed 11 stab wounds and lacerations that the woman suffered. She said the woman underwent emergency surgery for a collapsed lung and internal bleeding, then had another surgery to repair her right elbow joint. The woman remains in intensive care and is expected to be hospitalized for several more days.

Williams has an active arrest warrant for domestic battery involving strangulation in Nevada, Dale-Schmidt said. He was convicted of misdemeanor domestic battery there in 2019 and has felony convictions in Illinois for residential burglary and retail theft, according to Dale-Schmidt.

He’s charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated domestic battery.

Stunned airline passenger watches worker putting tape on plane wing before takeoff

Image

If you're the type of person who gets nervous before a flight, a worker taping the plane together is not what you'd ideally like to see before take-off.

That's what one passenger saw when she looked out the window of a Spirit Airlines plane.

TikToker @myhoneysmacks was waiting for her flight to takeoff from Nashville International Airport when she spotted the unusual maintenance job - and it absolutely terrified her.

Clearly a little traumatised by what she's seeing, she can be heard saying: "The reason why I don’t fly with Spirit.

"I don’t care if it is aviation airplane tape or nothing, the fact that you have to tape the plane together and then you doing it while people are on the flight like we cannot see you.

"That’s the reason why I will not fly with Spirit, now Southwest I’ll do, but Spirit no sir."

She continued: "After a while, they’re going to need a fresh new roll of tape, their tapes gonna lose all its stickiness, you flying all around the world and you got tape holding it together. Don’t even worry about it, I won’t be booking with you."

The video quickly went viral, earning over 1.6 million views.

While some viewers were just as petrified as the passenger, others assured her that using that tape, known as Speed Tape, was pretty common practice among all airlines - not just Spirit.

Speed Tape is an extremely durable type of aluminium tape that can withstand extreme environmental conditions and up to 600mph winds, and is regularly used for minor plane repairs.

It does look a little bit like duct tape, though, which might be why the sight of it going on a plane wing is a little daunting for passengers onboard.

"It's speed tape. It [temporarily] repairs things. You don't think southwest [does] this? Lol," commented one TikTok user.

A second agreed: "That's gorilla glue tape girly, [you're] safer than you were before it was fixed."

"So many people overreacting... it's completely normal," a third viewer added.

And a fourth, who claimed to have a background in aviation, even told her: "I’m an airplane mechanic every and I mean every airline uses speed tape on planes. And yes we routinely have to apply it after each flight."

But still, some followers did not like the look of what they were seeing.

"Baby I would've RAN off the plane! And got my money back," one horrified viewer wrote.

"Yeah, absolutely not!!!" commented a second.

Steer escapes during senior prank, runs loose through Chicago suburb

Residents of a Chicago suburb were in for a surprise when a steer escaped during a high school senior prank gone wrong and went running through the town.

Niles police said several seniors from Northridge Preparatory School were pulling a senior prank in early hours Thursday that involved bringing live animals to the school, including a steer, a pig and multiple chickens.

Police said the steer escaped from the students and was seen running through the streets of Niles.

Witnesses captured video showing people chasing the steer through a neighborhood.

Police said they were able to corner the steer behind some homes and it was captured with the help of an animal expert from Wagner Farms. The steer was taken to the Hooved Animals Humane Society in Woodstock.

Northridge Preparatory administrators said an internal investigation has been opened, but the school is not pursuing criminal charges against the pranksters.

The Village of Niles issued ordinance citations to the prankers for curfew violation, disorderly conduct and animal feces accumulation -- not permitted and prohibited animal species.

Colorado rescue discovers rare male calico 'unicorn' kitten
by Ben Hooper

Image

April 25 (UPI) -- An animal rescue group said one of its volunteers is currently caring for a male calico kitten, a feline so rare they are often called "unicorn" kittens.

NoCo Kitties in Loveland said the kitten and his siblings were born in a Weld County shed and were turned over to the Weld County Humane Society before coming to NoCo Kitties.

Volunteer Alli Magish, who is fostering the three kittens and their mother, Amber, said she started to suspect one of the three calicos might be male, and a veterinarian confirmed it.

Only one in 3,000 calico kittens are born male, veterinarians said. Calicos typically end up with the coloration due to getting different color genes from the X chromosomes they receive from their parents. Male kittens usually only have one X and one Y chromosomes, but can sometimes end up with calico coloring when they receive XXY chromosomes.

Experts said male calicos can also be the result of chimerism, which involves some cells in an individual's body having XX chromosomes and others having XY chromosomes.

The coloring can also result from random mutations of skin cells, but that is the rarest cause of calico color in males, experts said.

NoCo Kitties said the kitten, dubbed Charlie the Unicorn, will eventually be made available for adoption.

'Hero' 7th Grader Grabs Steering Wheel and Stops School Bus After Driver Passes Out

Michigan seventh grader Dillon Reeves safely brought the school bus to a stop on Wednesday after the female driver "lost consciousness"

Image

A 7th grader in Michigan is being hailed as a "little hero" for bringing his school bus to a halt after its driver passed out at the wheel.

Dillon Reeves, a student at Lois E. Carter Middle School in Warren, Michigan grabbed the wheel and brake of the bus during his ride home from school on Wednesday afternoon, Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent Robert D. Livernois said in news conference Thursday.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Livernois added that the bus driver became "lightheaded and lost consciousness" during the journey but the "quick-thinking" and actions of Reeves "made all the difference."

"I could not be prouder of his efforts," he added. "The Warren Police and Fire Departments responded very quickly, tended to the driver, and the students were safely loaded onto a different bus to make their way home."

In video footage of the incident released by authorities and obtained by ABC News, the female driver, who had been driving for the school since July 2022, can be seen using her cap to fan her face. She then picks up her radio and says, "I feel very dizzy and I have to pull over," before passing out.

Dillon can then be seen grabbing the wheel and pulling the brake as his fellow students scream. "Someone call 911, now!" he shouts. "Someone should call 911. I don't care! Someone call 911."

Livernois said the driver did not make it to where they planned to pull over and that, terrifyingly, the bus started to "veer into oncoming traffic." At that point, Dillion, who was sitting five rows back, jumped into action and "brought the bus to a stop in the middle of the road," he added.

"He had the wherewithal to push it [the brake] slowly, likely in anticipation that the bus was full of passengers," said Livernois, adding that it was "an extraordinary act of courage and maturity."

Speaking at the news conference, Dillion's parents Steve and Ireta Reeves said they were "very, very proud" of their son. "This is overwhelming for all of us," said Steve.

"To do something like this, fills my heart, makes my heart skip a beat, to even watch that video again," continued Ireta. "I'm just … I can't even express the proudness. I'm extremely proud of him."

Steve added, "It's kind of like why us, but it's an honor, we've got a little hero."

The couple was then asked by reporters where Dillion may have learned what to do during the incident. "He's been on my lap driving country roads, pulling in driveways since about 4 years old," said Steve. "Driving side by side with me in the passenger seat about 9, driving golf carts. He's a good driver," he added with a laugh.

"He could probably drive one of the cars out of here and be OK. He's very attentive to his surroundings," Steve continued.

"I asked him, 'Dillion how did you know what to do?' " added his mom. "'How did you know how to drive that bus?' He said, 'I watch her do it every day,' so he pays close attention to everybody."

On Thursday, Livernois confirmed no damage was done to the bus or any property and that the driver remains in the hospital undergoing testing and observations.

He added that students on the bus were offered a counseling session at the school the following day, while Dillion will be recognized with a commendation from the school board at a later date.

Warren Fire Commissioner Skip McAdams reported no injuries to the children on the 66-seater bus, per told CNN.

Gardener shares simple hack to get rid of pests with household items that 'smell great'

Image

A gardening expert has shared a simple hack to keep pests out of the garden using two everyday household items that "smells great" to humans but foul to critters.

Anne Caserta highlighted two store cupboard staples that can be used as natural alternatives to chemicals to get rid of bugs and other plant-eating pests.

She shared them in a video on her TikTok page @annalanier2, lauding them for offering a cheap and easy solution.

She said she had used coffee and cloves to tackle garden invaders.

In the video, she explained: "Bugs and mosquitos hate the smell of coffee. I am going to sprinkle it around the outside of my house. Guess what? It smells great."

Anna also showed ants' reaction to the strong and woody smell of cloves.

She claimed: "Ants can't stand the smell of cloves."

In the video, the ants could be seen giving an adverse response to cloves that had been spread on flowerbeds.

Another gardening pro commented that coffee is also a good repellent to keep squirrels away from your backyard.

Someone else said it could also be used to keep snails away too.

Image

The video went viral and many other users were seen sharing their gardening pro tips and tricks to keep ants, rodents, and other insects away from plants.

One suggested: "You can also put cloves in the stored rice to keep bugs away."

Another confirmed the simple hacks had been useful, and said: "I had a major ant problem and this hack really saved my life. No ants in less than three hours. Try it!"

A woman is preserving a special piece of ham at home after spotting Princess Diana’s face in it.

Hattie Osma bought the packet to make sandwiches for lunch at work, but was ‘shocked’ to see the people’s princess staring back at her.

The 36-year-old said her colleagues were also ‘really spooked’ by it, and one even offered her £30 for the ‘hamazing’ slice.

She turned them down and didn’t eat it either, despite being ravenous.

Hattie, from Cheltenham Spa, said: ‘I loved Princess Diana growing up, she was the people’s princess. She was “hamazing”.

‘I peeled the top slice off and ate it before making my ham sandwich and noticed Diana looking up at me. I’m really glad I didn’t eat it.

‘I was shocked at first, and everyone who’s seen it is really spooked by it and shocked.

‘Someone in the office offered me £30 for the slice, but I politely declined.’

Some Toronto Transit customers may feel discouraged from riding transit in recent months. Between a rise in crime and service cuts, not to mention the fare hikes and overdue Eglinton Crosstown, there are several factors pushing would-be passengers to other modes of transit, a problem that one local high school student may have found a solution to.

Zarif Ali, a grade 12 International Baccalaureate student, has designed a new app called Transit+, envisioned to encourage transit use in the Toronto and the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA), and, by association, improve the quality of life for people residing in the region.

Ali tells blogTO that the app is "designed to address the challenges faced by the TTC and Metrolinx while incentivizing public transit usage over cars for trips under one hour."

Image

While the app is more of a design and planning exercise than something you can actually download onto your phone, it offers up an interesting "what if?" based on a very real example that exists today.

In addition to telling users when their next ride will show up, the app uses a rewards-based program as part of what Ali describes as a "streamlined mobile experience to offer commuters a comprehensive overview of the transit system," taking inspiration and cues from the success of Hong Kong's MTR system.

Similar to Hong Kong's amazingly-named Octopus Card and its user perks, Ali envisions a TTC and Presto system that operates like a Starbucks rewards card, but for public transportation.

Image

The Transit+ vision would offer riders benefits like free rides, discounts from vendors operating in transit stations, and even access to top-tier attractions in exchange for doing their part to lower greenhouse gas emissions by riding mass transit.

The app proposes several other features that could streamline transit use, aiming to create an all-in-one solution by including an option for digital fare payment that would allow users to tap on with their phones via the magic of near-field communication, adding an extra layer of security over standard Presto cards.

Of course, all of this interconnectivity with existing fare infrastructure means that the app — despite the work that has been put into it — will not be able to operate as intended without immense cooperation between the designers, the TTC, and Metrolinx.

Image

"I have conducted extensive research and created a detailed report outlining the problems faced by Toronto's transit systems, and the financial model supporting its feasibility," Ali tells blogTO.

If implemented, Ali claims that the system would allow the TTC and Metrolinx to "increase revenue and reduce dependency on government subsidies."

Half of Vinyl Buyers in the US Don’t Have a Record Player, New Study Shows
:?

One might think that the rise in vinyl sales would call for a corresponding rise in turntables. As it turns out, however, about half of vinyl LP buyers don’t own a record player, according to a recent study by the music sales data company Luminate (via Music Business Worldwide).

Luminate’s “Top Entertainment Trends for 2023” report found that of the 3,900 US-based respondents surveyed, “50% of consumers who have bought vinyl in the past 12 months own a record player, compared to 15% among music listeners overall.” So — feel free to double-check our math here — that would indicate that 50% of vinyl buyers over the past year have no way to play those records at home.

Luminate seems to credit these stats largely to “superfans,” who they define as “music listeners who spend above average (median) time AND money on music, actively discover new music, participate in music-related activities on social media, and plan on attending a live music event in the next 12 months.”

Still, the vast majority of music revenue — 84% in 2022 — still comes from streaming services, which could indicate that a lot of these “superfans” operate more on a completist mindset and tend to buy vinyl simply for the sake of owning rather than necessarily listening to it. It’s also worth noting that the highest-selling albums on vinyl last year were Taylor Swift’s Midnights (945,000 copies), Harry Styles’ Harry’s House (480,000), and Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR (263,000) — all artists with notoriously fervent fanbases.

But the vinyl craze extends far beyond the world of young pop artists, too: Last year, Jack White called on major record labels to build their own vinyl record pressing plants in an effort to alleviate delays in manufacturing. Last month, Metallica bought their own pressing plant after their albums were pressed to vinyl nearly a million times in 2022.

Shark sculpture made from 2,262 canned goods wins Kentucky contest
By Ben Hooper

April 25 (UPI) -- A team of Kentucky middle schoolers built a sculpture of a shark biting through a surfboard from 2,262 canned goods and 400 bottles of water to win a county's "Canstruction" competition.

The Oldham County Middle School students entered 2023 Canstruction Oldham County, a combination food drive and sculpture contest, and created their shark from 2,090 tuna cans, 172 Chef Boyardee pasta cans and 400 bottles of water.

The team nearly swept the competition, winning the titles of most cans, best original design, people's choice, structural integrity and best use of labels.

The food items and bottled waters used for the sculptures in the contest were donated to the HighPoint food kitchen to support local families in need.

Scientists Taught Parrots to Make Video Calls — Now They Won’t Stop Calling Their Friends
April 28, 2023*

• It’s not just people who love talking on the phone for hours on end.

When you’re feeling troubled and alone, what do you do? Most people tend to grab the phone and call someone.

As it turns out, so will parrots. At least, if somebody teaches them how to use a phone.

A team of scientists from the Northeastern University, MIT, and the University of Glasgow recently published the results of a peculiar study. Parrots tend to flock together, but all over the world, pet birds live in isolation.

The researchers wondered what would happen if we taught lonely parrots to call each other.

“There are 20 million parrots living in people’s homes in the U.S., and we wanted to explore whether those birds might benefit from video calling,” Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas from the University of Glasgow told The Guardian.

Well, the study found the birds will call each other — and they don’t want to stop.

Every single one of the birds participating in the study placed phone calls, and it wasn’t a case of the owner sticking the phone in front of them. The parrots began asking for the phone because they wanted to squawk to their friends.

Being able to connect with other parrots significantly improved their lives. Case in point, one previously flightless bird learned to fly — because its friend taught it how over Zoom.

Image
Photos courtesy of Matthew Modoono/Northeastern University

Call if You Want

In the study, the researchers gathered 18 parrots of various species all over the U.S. They taught the birds how to use the touchscreen interface of a mobile phone or tablet, providing additional motivation with some treats.

They also showed the birds how to make their first calls. Then, the rest was up to the parrots.

According to the scientists, an important part of the study was that the parrots were free to decide whether or not they wanted to place a call. They were taught to ring a small bell if they wished to call another parrot.

And boy did the bells start ringing.

The parrots appeared to understand that they weren’t looking at a mirror or a moving image of a bird. They realized that there was another living, breathing parrot on the other end of the line.

That also meant that the birds’ owners had to take some precautions. The parrots were restricted to five minutes of screen time in one session. The owners also received strict instructions to cut the call at the first signs of aggression or fear.

Three parrots didn’t deal with the calls so well and ended up dropping out. But the 15 that remained loved every moment on the phone.

Playing and Learning

Not only did the parrots learn to ask to place a call — they didn’t want to get off the phone. The birds that completed the study would stay on the line until the last second.

While calling each other, the parrots acted much like they would in the wild. They would learn to imitate each others’ vocalizations, much in the same call-and-response manner that wild parrots do.

“I was quite surprised at the range of different behaviors. Some would sing, some would play around and go upside down, and others would want to show another bird their toys,” said Hirskyj-Douglas.

It wasn’t all empty parrot gossip, though. The parrots began to learn from each other over the phone and pick up potentially life-changing skills.

Some birds learned to forage for food in ways they had never used before. But the most amazing case must be the parrot that learned to fly.

The bird had spent its entire life in captivity and had never figured out how to use its wings. By interacting with another parrot over the video call, it was soon flapping around its home.

Finally, the parrots started forming friendships. They were free to choose which birds they wanted to call by tapping their pictures on the touchscreen.

It quickly became clear that they avoided parrots they just didn’t click with — just like we avoid calling people that annoy us. But if two parrots got along, they would quickly become lifelong friends.

Jennifer Cunha, a researcher at Northeastern University, enrolled her Goffin’s cockatoo Ellie in the study. She became inseparable from Cookie, an African gray parrot from California.

“It’s been over a year and they still talk,” said Cunha.

Image

Intelligent — but Lonely

So, what does this study tell us? First of all, it’s a true testament to parrots’ intelligence.

Not only did the birds learn how to place calls, they understood they were “talking” to an actual living bird. All in all, the birds appear to have the intellectual capacity of a young elementary-school-aged human child.

But perhaps more importantly, it shows us how vital socializing is to parrots’ mental and physical well-being. The results of the study can help both pet owners and professional animal caretakers provide better care for their birds.

Video calls could be particularly good for birds that can’t be in physical contact with others, whether due to illness or other reasons. That’s what happened with two old, sick macaws.

The pair had lived their lives in isolation, barely seeing a glimpse of another macaw in their lives. But once they learned to video call, the trembling seniors suddenly seemed many years younger as they sang, danced, and played together.

“It really speaks to how cognitively complex these birds are and how much ability they have to express themselves. It was really beautiful, those two birds, for me,” said Hirskyj-Douglas.

Hungry elephant flings woman into air after being taunted with banana

Image

This is totally bananas.

A woman was flung to the side by an annoyed elephant after she teased the behemoth with a banana — and wouldn’t give it up.

Footage from the startling incident — which took place in an unidentified area in India — shows the unnamed woman holding up a piece of fruit in front of the mammal’s face as it tried to bite down.

The smiling soon-to-be victim took the banana away at the last second as the elephant drew near, prompting swift backlash from the large animal.

In a matter of 14 seconds, the elephant went from curious to cross, as it swung its tusks and trunk into the unsuspecting woman and launched her backward into the air.

“You can’t fool an elephant even though he is tamed,” tweeted Susanta Nanda, who works with the Indian Forest Service, in a post on Thursday. “They are one of the most intelligent animals to be in captivity.”

Some Twitter users were concerned about the woman’s well-being, while others condemned her for being a “fool.”

“Hope she survived the attack,” one person wrote.

“Scary,” another said. “Never ever disrespect any creature and intrude their rightful space.”

“That surely did hurt. Fool,” chided someone else.

“She deserved what she got,” argued one user.

Elephant smashes into woman with tusk; The animal did not live up to the moniker “gentle giant.”
susantananda3/Twitter

Elephants are astoundingly intelligent creatures, as past footage has shown them peeling bananas with their trunks, but have also wreaked havoc on tourists and residents alike.

There have been past reports of elephants trampling people to death, charging at others and flipping over cars.

However, they’re mostly known as gentle giants.

The animals, which weigh thousands of pounds as adults, also have a sense of humor. Viral videos have shown them interrupting television broadcasts with their inquisitive trunks.

The latest elephant scuffle, however, comes just a day after a threatened tiger lunged at tourists in a video also posted by Nanda.

Napoli fans told not to take title party onto Mount Vesuvius volcano

Napoli fans preparing to celebrate the club's first Italian league title since 1990 have been told to steer clear of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that overlooks the southern city of Naples.

Park authorities became concerned at reports that Napoli's fanatical fans planned to set off flares to light up Vesuvius in the Italian national colours should the team clinch the title on Sunday, branding the stunt dangerous.

Runaway leaders Napoli will secure the club's third Serie A crown if they beat visitors Salernitana and second-placed Lazio drop points against Inter Milan at San Siro.

"We are all pleased for Napoli's success which will bring honour to our region and great joy for people," said Vesuvius park commissioner Raffaele De Luca.

"But the celebrations must remain within the limits of civil behaviour," he added.

Vesuvius famously erupted in AD79 when it destroyed the nearby Roman city of Pompeii but it remains active.

Naples has been gearing itself up for a party that has been on hold for several weeks.

Normally superstitious about mentioning the word "scudetto," Neapolitans have been festooning the city with banners, flags and life-sized replicas of Napoli players.

Around 10,000 fans welcomed the team back from Turin last Sunday following a last-gasp 1-0 victory at Juventus that put Napoli on the brink of its first Serie A title in 33 years.

Thousands of motorbikes and scooters followed the team bus. The convoy was filmed by Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, who could be heard exclaiming: "It's crazy man, it's crazy, my voice is gone."

Napoli's home game against Salernitana was moved forward a day to Sunday for public safety reasons, Serie A confirmed on Friday.

Napoli were initially scheduled to play Salernitana on Saturday, with Lazio visiting Inter a day later which could have seen Napoli fans celebrating outside the stadium in Milan.

Napoli will now take on Salernitana at 3 p.m. local time on Sunday following the change, less than an hour after the score at the San Siro is known.
