Conductor stops moving train travelling at 112km/h to rescue little boy from the tracks

A conductor managed to stop a train travelling 70 miles an hour in order to save a three-year-old boy wandering alone on the tracks.

The child was alone and walking just a few feet from the electrified metal near Tarrytown Station in New York.

The train driver slammed the brakes on while it was travelling at 70 miles per hour.

The heroic rescue was captured on CCTV, showing conductor Marcus Higgins running onto the tracks after stopping the engine.

According to initial reports, the child was non-verbal at the time.

Image

"Emergency, emergency, you have to stop the track, we have a small child on the track," the conductor can be heard saying in an engine room recording.

Seeing the child was not responding to the oncoming locomotive, Higgins hit the button, shutting off the power to the rail.

After the daring rescue, Higgins put the youngster on the train and reunited him with his mum and sister.

A debate broke out recently on an internet forum about whether a mum was right in allowing her 11-year-old son to travel alone on a train, with only his younger child for a companion.

The parent explained she's trying to work out the logistics of a plan - and if it goes ahead, the pair will travel alone without an adult.

However, she was keen to stress the kids would be supervised by grown-ups at either end of the journey.

In the controversial post to Mumsnet, she questioned if she was being unreasonable "to think 11 is not too young to travel on a train alone".

"Please settle a debate! Happy to hear all opinions," she wrote, introducing her conundrum.

"Is 11 years old, starting year seven in September, too young to take a one hour train journey, without parents but with a slightly younger child?" the mum asked. "Put on at one end by an adult and met at the other end by an adult, with a phone and data, and train staff informed? No behavioural problems or SEN."

But several commenters felt they could not fairly answer the question with the information given.

"More context needed I think. Responsible for younger child - no. Ok to do journey on own - not used to train, few other passengers, few stops, unfamiliar journey - probably not quite yet - too vulnerable to deal with weirdos. Train to school full of other kids on the same journey with lots of stops - should be fine," read one reply.

Echoing a similar sentiment, someone else said: "An 11 year old should not be responsible for a younger child on a train."

Woman’s Life Saved After Her Dog Found a Kidney Donor at the Beach: One-in-22 Million Odds

Image

In an absolutely jaw-dropping change of fortune, a Welshwoman with late-stage renal failure met a kidney donor on the beach who happened to be a perfect match.

44-year-old Lucy Humphrey from Caerphilly has lived her whole adult life with lupus, but it was in 2017 that she heard from her doctors that if she couldn’t find a new kidney in 5-year’s time, there was a chance she would die.

Requiring kidney dialysis, Humphrey and her partner Cenydd Owen had to cancel their campervan holiday, and so decided to drive it instead to the beach to have a barbeque.

While they were there, one of their two Dobermans, a big lug called Indie, kept running over to another camper to pester her while she was crocheting. By the third time, Owen went over to apologize.

There were no hard feelings between the camper, 40-year-old Katie James, and Indie, and in fact she was soon over at the barbeque chatting with Humphrey.

It was there James learned that Humphrey needed a kidney. She spoke up to mention that she had just joined the kidney donation register and offered to swap phone numbers.

“And to be honest I didn’t think anything else would come of it,” Humphrey remarked to the Daily Record.

However, blood tests later revealed the two campers were a perfect match, something which Humphrey described as a 1-in-22 million chance. The transplant took place in October of 2022, after which Humphrey needed 4 weeks to be discharged from the hospital due to James’ donated kidney not “waking up” fast enough.

After that, she could finally go on that campervan holiday, have a drink with dinner, and do many more activities besides.

“I’m so grateful for her… I told my partner in 2019 if I didn’t find a transplant within five years it was possible something would happen and I would die,” said Humphrey. “I want this to be a message to other people not to give up hope.”

James said when she first signed up she was told she wouldn’t receive any information on what her donated kidney would accomplish—whether it saved a life or not, or even who it went to.

Like this, she not only knows for sure it saved a woman’s life, but it created a lasting friendship—proof of which lies in the smartphones of James, Humphrey, and Owen, where WhatsApp messages bear the address “The Kidney Gang” from the group chat they created.

Lucky Charms Brings Back Pouches of 'Just Magical Marshmallows

Image

Even Lucky Charms knows everyone's favorite part about the cereal is the marshmallows!

On Wednesday, the brand announced the return of their Just Magical Marshmallows. Lucky Charms enthusiasts can enjoy the snackable bites sans cereal pieces for a limited time, starting the end of April through early May.

At $5 each, the packets are not only resealable, but they also come to retailer shelves decked out in eight different designs inspired by the magical marshmallows — hearts, stars, horseshoes, clovers, blue moons, unicorns, rainbows and red balloons.

The cereal giant first introduced the bite sized treats in 2020 with a different package design that featured a green background.

Image

During the initial launch, fans shared their excitement on social media. One user said "It's about time," while another wrote, "Dreams do come true!"

In 2022, General Mills dropped a limited-edition cereal that combined two of its most popular flavors: Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

The hybrid breakfast treat featured "the delicious taste of Lucky's magical marshmallow charms and frosted oats alongside Cinnadusted squares in every spoonful," the brand said in a release at the time.

It's not the first time they've played with merging some of their cereals into one. The brand has a line of "Remix" flavors, combining things like Cinnamon Toast Crunch bits with Vanilla Chex and crunchy churros bits, or Golden Grahams pieces with Cocoa Puffs cereal and marshmallows.

STATUE DEPICTING BUDDHA FOUND IN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN CITY

Image

An archaeological mission excavating in Berenice Troglodytica has uncovered a statue depicting Buddha that dates from the 2nd century AD.
Berenice Troglodytica, also known as Berenike, was an Ancient Egyptian seaport on the western shore of the Red Sea, Egypt. The city was founded by Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285–246 BC), who named it after his mother, Berenice I of Egypt.

During the Roman period, between the 1st and 2nd century AD, the city was one of the primary waystations for the trade of war elephants and exotic goods such as pepper, semi-precious stones, cloth, and ivory, transported between India, Sri Lanka, Arabia, and Upper Egypt.

Archaeologists from a joint Polish-American mission have found a 71cm tall statue depicting a standing Buddha while excavating in a temple complex.

Around the head of the statue is a halo of sunlight, often found in Buddhist iconography and religious texts, describing how Lord Buddha emitted rays of light (of different colours: blue, yellow, red and white) during the time of nirvana and Parinirvana.

According to Dr. Marius Goyazda, the stone used for the statue may have originated from a region south of Istanbul, with one theory suggesting that traders from India had the statue carved locally and dedicated to the nearby temple.

Excavations of the temple also discovered an inscription in Hindi (Sanskrit), dating from the reign of the Roman Emperor, Philip the Arab (AD 244 to 249), in addition to Greek inscriptions which are from the 1st century BC.

Archaeologists also uncovered two coins from the central Indian kingdom of Satavahana, an ancient Indian dynasty based in the Deccan region. The Satavahanas were one of the first Indian kingdoms to produce state coinage struck with images of their rulers, with the two coins found at Berenice Troglodytica dated to around the 2nd century AD.

I found out my man was cheating in front of 35,000 people

Image

A Florida woman has revealed the insane way she learned her boyfriend was cheating on her, discovering the betrayal alongside tens of thousands of other people.

Mikayla Miedzianowski, 23, took to TikTok to share her heartbreaking story, posting a video explaining that she spotted her beau cozied up with another woman on the Facebook page “Are We Dating the Same Guy?”

The popular page — designed for ladies in Tampa who are suspicious of their beaus — boasts 35,000 subscribers, with users often sharing photos of potential paramours who display “red flags.”

“Just silently swigging out of a bottle of wine on my boyfriend’s couch while he does the dishes because I just found out on social media in front of 35,000 people that he cheated on me and I’m going to have to confront him any second,” Miedzianowski captioned her clip, which quickly racked up more than 10 million views.

In an interview with NeedToKnow.co.uk on Friday, the TikToker dished additional details on the saga, saying she was mindlessly scrolling the Facebook page when she came across the image of her boyfriend, whom she had been dating for six months.

“The photo she [the other woman] posted was taken the night that he met her and cheated on me,” Miedzianowski explained. “She never reached out to me [directly], but she told me the entire story, anonymously, in the comments.”

After receiving confirmation from the woman, Miedzianowski recorded her now-infamous TikTok clip before working up the courage to confront her boyfriend.

“I showed him the messages with shaking hands, and he confessed immediately to cheating on me,” the Tampa vet nurse recalled. “And not just the two times I knew of, but more times than he even remembered.”

Miedzianowski claimed her ex begged for forgiveness, saying he “couldn’t imagine life” without her around.

However, she decided to leave him then and there — a move which caused her cheating boyfriend to quickly change his attitude.

“He stopped begging for me to stay and developed a cold demeanor,” she stated. “He suddenly started claiming that he didn’t love me and refused to fight for me.”

Miedzianowski also told NeedToKnow.co.uk that she initially tried to defend her philandering beau, saying: “I asked [the poster] to please delete her comments on the post so that no one would think poorly of someone that I loved so much.

“In what was my darkest moment, my first reaction was to try to protect him,” she heartbreakingly explained. “When you have so many things tied to someone, especially family and travel plans, it is really hard to process.”

However, Miedzianowski has been heartened by the enormous reaction that her TikTok video has received, with many people reaching out to offer their support.

“Once I came to the conclusion that what had happened was entirely out of my control, I tried to cope with humor, and that’s where the TikTok video came into play,” she stated.

“Upon going viral, I realized that people actually care about what happened to me,” she continued. “Everything happens for a reason, and I am lucky to have seen his true colors so early on.”

Miedzianowski didn’t disclose whether her ex-boyfriend is now officially with the woman who posted his photo on the “Are We Dating the Same Guy?” page.

However, she says she’s starting to heal and wants to find love again.

“I hope to continue inspiring people to share their stories because that has helped me so much to move on after the end of what turned out to be a terrible relationship,” she said.

“I still have a lot of work to do moving forward, but I hope to inspire people to join me in healing.”

'Fog of bees' briefly interrupts PGA Tour's Mexico Open
By Ben Hooper

Image

April 28 (UPI) -- The PGA Tour's Mexico Open was briefly interrupted when a swarm of bees sent a group of golfers ducking in the grass.

The PGA Tour posted a video to Twitter showing Erik van Rooyen preparing to hit his approach shot when he quickly crouches down in the grass at Vidanta Vallarta.

Van Rooyen can be heard in the footage repeating the word "bees" in warning to his caddie and fellow golfers Francesco Molinari and Chez Reavie.

The camera operator ends up crouched in the grass alongside the rest of van Rooyen's group.

The announcer in the video described the incident as a "fog of bees." There were no reports of injuries.

Van Rooyen went on to make par at the hole.

"It's funny, but certainly don't want to get stung by those bad boys," he told PGA Tour officials.

Here's What Those Freaky "Geese Teeth" Really Are
Certified freaks, but are those teeth on their beaks? Weird-ass goose tongues make park-goers weak.

Image

An angry goose is such a force to be reckoned with that in parts of the world they’re used as Guard Geese, protecting homes and farms from trespassers. From a distance, they might not seem like the typical attack animal, but get a look at their freaky geese teeth and you’d likely feel differently.

But do geese have teeth? What are these barbed tongue accessories actually made of, and what evolutionary benefit do they carry?

Do geese have teeth?
While these spiky barbs might look and even function like teeth, they do not fall under the category of teeth owing to the material they’re made of.

“As strange as this looks, geese don’t have teeth in the normal sense of the word,” said Vanessa Amaral-Rogers of the RSPB to IFLScience. “Teeth are made from enamel and these spiky-looking structures are made from cartilage – known as tomia (singular tomium).”

Image

Geese teeth, also called conical papillae, are arranged along the tongue and can work with the bill to improve cutting. Some geese even have the barbs at the back of the tongue to prevent food they’re trying to ingest from being regurgitated, a purpose which explains why the throats of turtles are such a hellscape, too.

While not carrying the enamel of true teeth, the tomia pack a punch of their own.

“The serrated protrusions are part of the beak and tongue but act in the same way that regular teeth do,” said Amaral-Rogers, “they are also very sharp!”

What is the purpose of "geese teeth"?
The tomia that line the tongue and beak might not be true teeth, but their purpose is near enough the same.

“Geese eat all kinds of tough food,” continued Amaral-Rogers. “Having tomia on their beak and tongue helps them to rip and pull roots, stems, grasses and aquatic plants from the ground. The ‘teeth’ on their tongue also help clamp down on small mammals and insects.”

Are “geese teeth” seen in other species?
An impressive set of faux gnashers, then, but are other birds packing such savagery in their bills?

“These types of barbs are certainly seen in other species of birds,” said Amaral-Rogers. “For many, the tongue morphology has developed as a result of convergent evolution and is linked to the feeding habits of the species. Ducks, geese and swans (Anatidae) all have a similar type of tomia which helps with holding and ripping vegetation.”

“However, the tomia differs in others. For example, some of the fish-eating birds have spines covering the whole of their tongue – all the better for catching and holding in place wriggling fish. For some other amazing bird tongues, take a look at penguins and lorikeets – puts that goose tongue into perspective!”

So, there you have it kids. Geese don’t have teeth, but they could probably still mess you up.

The Picturesque Polish Village Where All 6,000 Inhabitants Live on the Same Street
April 26th, 2023*

Sułoszowa, a Polish village of around 6,000 people located in the Olkuska Upland, less than 30 km northwest of Kraków, has been dubbed ‘Little Tuscany’ because of its unusual layout.

The village of Sułoszowa has been around for many years, but it only recently started attracting international attention after bird’s eye photos and videos went viral on social media. Millions of people around the world were mesmerized by the unusual layout of the rural settlement – hundreds of houses on either side of a singular street, snaking through multi-colored agricultural fields as far as the eye can see. Every one of the 5.819 inhabitants – according to a 2017 census – lives on the same street, which stretches for over 9 kilometers.

Image

Aerial photos of Sułoszowa originally went viral in Poland back in 2021, but this month a drone-shot video of the Polish village garnered international attention. People were amazed by the [urhttps://www.odditycentral.com/news/youtube-village-the-indian-village-where-almost-everyone-is-a-youtuber.html]unique look[/url] of the village surrounded on all sides by patches of agricultural land, as well as by the fact that everyone just built their home along the main road, instead of expanding outwards.

Image

The linear, single-street layout of Sułoszowa was dubbed ‘bizarre’ by major international news outlets like Mail Online and The Sun, but to the Poles commenting on national news websites, it’s just a typical Polish village. Apparently, having a single road passing through a village is not at all unusual in the central European country, but the aerial viewpoint just makes it look more impressive.

Image

“The normal layout of a traditional street village, only the village is very long,” one person commented.

Image

“Someone explain to me what this unusual arrangement is. Ordinary street,” someone else wrote.

While having a singular street may not be that uncommon for European villages, its location in the middle of a natural mosaic of agricultural fields is definitely not something you see every day. Some have gone as far as to compare it to Italy’s Tuscany.

Over 350 saucy business names have been banned for being too rude

In the UK, several saucy business names have been banned — for being too rude. They included Bell End Holdings and Little Pricks Acupuncture.

Others vetoed included Stripped ’N’ Well Hung, Quick Screw and a courier company hoping to register the name About Effing Time.

A business wanting to move into the air-cooling industry was stopped from registering the company as Stiff Nipples Air Conditioning.

Image

The titles were among 351 risqué names vetoed by Companies House officials last year.

The Little Northern Tart, Middle Finger Promotions and the Bad Bitch Boutique were ruled out — as were others deemed in bad taste, homophobic, racist or drug-related.

Odd registrations such as Violent Consumer and What The Forking Hell were also among those banned.

A further raft of rude titles such as Poop Ltd and Thetitbrothers were all stopped.

Image

A Companies House spokesperson said: “We have a statutory responsibility to ensure the names we register do not have the potential to offend.”

“All applications are carefully considered but we will not register a name which is considered to be offensive.” This is in addition to names that could be perceived as being fraudulent, or erroneously connected with the government or the royal family.

Proposed business names blocked in the past included Shameless Hussy Publishing and Rent A Minger.

Others spiked in the past were Allcock and Knobal Logistics Ltd and Skinny Bitch Bakery.

'I'm 17 and I make £4,000 a week selling sweets from a shed in my parents' garden'

Image

A shrewd teen businessman who started selling homemade cookies aged 15 is now raking in more than £4,000 a week after starting his own sweet shop.

Callum Baker, 17, started The Sweet Shack a week before his 16th birthday after being inspired by confectionary sellers on TikTok, reports Wales Online.

The young entrepreneur from Pontprennau in Cardiff started out with only £50 in his pocket, but has seen his business grow rapidly over the past 18 months and has turned over around £74,000 since January 2022.

He is continuing to expand the firm and now stocks more than 700 different sweets, crisps and drinks - but still makes sure to sell his original treats.

Image

Callum currently runs the business from a purpose-built shed in his parents' back garden which he has dubbed 'The Shack', but is already looking into expanding into larger premises.

He has also recently taken on a new employee after bringing in his neighbour in the evenings to help him pack the orders.

Describing the humble beginnings of The Sweet Shack, Callum told the local newspaper: "I was really bored and I watched a lot of TikTok and I was watching these sweet business videos. I

" bought some sweets online with £50 of my own money and set up a small website with just five products and then just started posting on Facebook pages and TikTok,”

“At first I had the corner of my bedroom, the one shelf, then two and then I took over the spare room as things got more popular.”

Callum has also seen huge benefits to his mental health from running the business after previously spending time in hospital because of depression.

He described being at "rock bottom" and feeling as if he "didn’t feel like I had much to live for" prior to the start of his sweet shop journey, but says it has now given him a new "drive" in life and provides him an opportunity to reach out to new fans on social media.

Callum said: “My confidence has shot up, going on TikTok live and speaking to hundreds of people every night is amazing,”

Support has also come from his family, as his mum Michele helps him to re-stock over the weekend and pack the parcels for shipping.

A senior NHS manager, she is referred to jokingly as 'admin' by Callum’s customers and is paid in sweets.

Discussing the effect of the online shop on Callum’s mental health struggles, she said: “It’s just changed him and I often wonder, would he be here now if it weren’t for this business? I think it’s really saved him. He gets excited now and he talks about the business and has something to look forward to.”

Callum is also looking to the future and is studying public services at Cardiff and Vale College, with an eye to joining the police one day.

For now though he is fully dedicated to taking his business to the next level, and hopes soon to enter the export sweet market.

Call 911 — she took their breath away.

A police officer in Mexico is skyrocketing to TikTok stardom for posting videos in her uniform that have left the internet swooning.

Magda Francisca Maciel Rodríguez, 38, has been hailed a “sexy” cop by her adoring 153,000 followers, attracting thousands of views on most clips.

Viewers shower her in compliments — mostly in Spanish — calling her “beautiful,” “spectacular” and even begging to be put in handcuffs by the Culiacán policewoman.

“Arrest me, I ran the red light,” one user pleaded in the comments section of a video with over 280,000 views.

“Beautiful woman,” someone else wrote.

“The police in Culiacan are beautiful!” another agreed.

“You are a princess,” one person chimed in.

“It was me officer, arrest me!” quipped someone else.

The Post reached out to Rodriguez for comment.

Under a clip with more than 57,000 views, she shows a series of photos of herself in uniform and at home, garnering more compliments from ogling onlookers.

“Spectacular!” one user simply wrote.

“Cute woman,” praised another.

“HOW BEAUTIFUL YOU ARE,” someone else enthusiastically agreed.

“Oh god I fell in love,” swooned one person.

“Greetings beautiful officer,” commented someone else.

“With all due respect, I want you to be my girlfriend,” declared another.

Rodríguez isn’t the first officer to send pulses racing online.

Just this month, Colombian cop Alex Narvaez went viral for her drop-dead gorgeous looks, as fans advised her to quit her day job and become a model.

And one Arizona officer, known simply as Kimberly, was accused of being too pretty to fight crime after going viral on TikTok.

Meanwhile, Diana Ramirez was crowned the “most beautiful cop in the world” last year, boasting an impressive Instagram following of over 430,000.

Exmouth aghast after iconic and popular 'rusty pole' disappears from the Maer

Image

People are dismayed by the removal of Exmouth's iconic "rusty pole", which disappeared earlier this month.

An old sewer relief pipe has stood on the Maer nature reserve since 1909, becoming rusty and seemingly forgotten over time.

Yet it has been catapulted to legendary status in recent years, with people even making special trips to visit it.

Exmouth's Rusty Pole even has its own TripAdvisor and Google review pages, where people share their thoughts on its appearance and purpose.

One visitor, who came to Exmouth a year ago, wrote on Google: "It's good to see that Exmouth has preserved its rusty pole in authentic rusty condition.

"So many rusty poles in other locations have been ruined by gentrification (and paint) but this remains as a rare and traditional seaside attraction. I was impressed, don't miss it if visiting the area."

However, on Thursday 13 April the landmark vanished from the Maer - and people are not happy.

Robyn Trigger-Glover, co-founder of Exmouth Rusty Pole Society: “It’s devastating. I remember turning to my partner and just saying ‘I can’t believe it’s gone’. It’s so innocent, so I don’t really understand."

South West Water confirmed that it had removed the pole.

In a statement, the company explained that it had "agreed to remove it after concerns were raised at a council meeting over the structural integrity of the pole and risk to public safety".

However, locals believe they should have been consulted before the landmark was taken away.

Image

Mike Menhenitt said: “I remember it from my childhood here in the 1950s, playing here with it.

"Why has it gone? It’s a landmark. Perhaps South West Water was not aware of the importance of this pole to people of the town."

The rusty pole rose to fame partly by accident, Max Damsell explained.

He said: "It started off as a joke to be honest, but then we created some reviews and put some photos up, and honestly we never really expected tourists and locals alike to take photos with the pole - group photos, family photos, engagements."

Two other poles have been identified as possible replacements, however, locals say they may not be rusty enough to keep visitors happy.

In the meantime, they are calling for the original rusty pole to be reinstated.

A lost dog in Northern Ireland was found 26 days later after walking more than 40 miles to the home of his former owners.

Lost Paws NI, a charity dedicated to locating lost dogs and cats, said a golden retriever named Cooper was surrendered by his previous owners, and was later adopted by a new family.

Cooper fled from the car the moment he and his new owner arrived at their home in Dungannon.

Multiple sightings were reported in the ensuing days, but Cooper managed to elude search groups as he crossed County Tyrone.

Cooper was finally captured once he arrived at his former owner's property in Tobermore, more than 40 miles from his new home in Dungannon.

Cooper was reunited with his new owner, who said the dog lost some weight during his long journey but is recovering at home.
