You've got to 'bee' kidding me: Flight delayed after bees swarm wingtip

HOUSTON, Texas (TND) — Passengers waiting on a Delta Air Lines flight Wednesday had a unique delay when a swarm of bees decided to latch onto the plane's wingtip.

The flight was delayed for several hours as crews attempted to get them to buzz off.

One passenger tweeted about the event and provided a play-by-play of what was happening.

Image

Image

At one point a beekeeper was called but eventually called off because they are not allowed to touch the plane, according to Enjeti. Pest control was also considered but they were not permitted to spray the plane.

When those options didn't work, the airline tried blowing exhaust on the swarm but Enjeti stated the "bees were not impressed."

Image

With an anti-climatic ending, the bees were finally shaken loose when the plane pushed back from the gate, a Delta spokesperson told CBS News.

"Bee-lieve it or not, Delta flight 1682 from Houston-Bush to Atlanta took a delay this afternoon after a friendly group of bees evidently wanted to talk shop with the winglet of our airplanes, no doubt to share the latest about flying conditions at the airport," the spokesperson added.

According to the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, swarming is the natural mode of protection for a honey bee colony in spring.

Tourists follow GPS directions straight into sea: ‘One expensive vacation’

Image

You have not reached your destination.

A sailboat crew jumped into action to save two tourists out of their sinking van after they drove into Honokohau Harbor, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Video of the incident captured by local Christie Hutchinson shows the quick-thinking crew swimming up to the driver and passenger and helping them out of the silver Chrysler Town & Country through the front windows.

Meanwhile, another pair of men tied a rope to the back of the van, attempting to pull it back onto the boat ramp, but ultimately failed as it quickly became fully submerged.

“Pretty sure that wasn’t supposed to happen,” Hutchinson can be heard saying from behind the camera as she recorded for nearly four-and-a-half minutes.

Hutchinson later explained in a Storyful report that the crew of the Nanea sailboat had returned from a day of sailing when they witnessed the car drive head-on into the harbor beside them.

“The passengers were tourists trying to find a Manta Ray Snorkel tour company in the harbor and had been following their GPS directions when they took a wrong turn into the water,” Hutchinson said.

Online, viewers of the farcical footage have pointed out that “The Office” characters Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) found themselves in a similar predicament in an episode of the NBC-aired sitcom.

“I just watched this episode of ‘The Office,'” one fan wrote.

“Michael Scott already did this episode,” another joked.

For many others, the incredible incident and subsequent report have left one pressing question unanswered: How does this happen?

“It’s as easy as looking out the windshield … What am I missing?” one asked. Mocked another, “So when you see water you still drive into it?”

“One expensive vacation,” quipped one savvy traveler. “Hope they got the extra coverage on their rental car.”

Inside the UK's new all-you-can-eat restaurant where robots serve you food

A new restaurant employs robot waiters to take your order, deliver your food and provide some cheery bleeping sounds as you dine.

Britain’s latest viral venue is a futuristic outing that throws the diner into the fictional worlds of Wall-E and iRobot.

Sakura is a Japanese all-you-can-eat dining space on Cheetham Hill Road on Manchester where robot waiters greet you with announcements and chirping sounds, Manchester Evening News reported.

The robots let you order your food using a tablet at the table before serving you the appropriate dish, making it the perfect place for introvert diners who prefer avoiding small talk.

The restaurant offers a range of nigiri, maki, teppanyaki and other Japanese delights for around £30 per person, which isn't bad given they've had to invest in the mechanical helpers.

Image

The venue is keen to point out that it is "robot-assisted", so if something goes wrong you can speak to a person rather than explain the complexities of an over-cooked steak to a confused looking tin can.

On the menu there are soups, dons, rice dishes, sweet and sour chicken, chicken wings, chips, crab claws, tempura and even ribeye steak rolls that are all part of the all you can eat offering.

It’s a dream come true for big eaters and robotics fans, but the reality might not live up to your expectations for everyone.

Reporter Ben Arnold visited the high-tech hotspot to see whether it was worth the hype, and came away feeling that it wasn't.

“I went in wanting it to be great, truly I did, but ended up wanted it to stop after the first few three dishes. They start out cute," Ben wrote.

"One turns up at the table with a bowl of prawn crackers and some kimchi as a little entrée that I’ve not ordered, and that’s fun too.

“But then it just stands there, side on, its blinking robot face staring the other way. Do I have to tip? Say thanks? Goodbye? Is it watching me? It gets bored of this eventually, and tells me to touch its face panel to signal it can get back to work, which I do, and it does. It’s a relief.”

When the robot waiter returned with the food he had ordered, he found himself unimpressed and feeling like the "strong, instantly detectable flavour" of cumin was overpowering his meal.

He was unimpressed by the food, including the lemon chicken, sweet and sour chicken, duck and katsu.

However having a robot waiter to whom you could pass the food meant he swerved an awkward chat with the waiter, adding: "It felt a bit cowardly doing it that way, but better that than having to explain to an actual real person how bad they were".

He described the desserts as "inedible".

As for the overall experience? "It was a depressing vision of a future that as a species we probably deserve, a grim purgatory we will have brought upon ourselves," he said.

North Carolina man faces down bear to rescue his dog

A North Carolina man used a walking stick to protect his dog from a hungry bear that aimed to make a meal out of the Yorkshire terrier.

John Koerber, 67, of Beechwood Lakes, on the outskirts of Hendersonville in Henderson County, said Chewbacca, aka ChewB, woke him up for a bathroom break recently at 4 a.m., about an hour before the yorkie's usual potty time.

Koerber harnessed ChewB on a retractable leash and took him out into the darkness to do his business.

Koerber told the Hendersonville Times-News he noticed ChewB do a "startled head turn to the woods," followed by the sound of "an incredibly deep-throated roar of sorts."

The bear suddenly appeared and lunged for the dog, Koerber said.

He said he quickly yanked ChewB back toward him and set about warding the bear off with a walking stick.

The bear blocked the duo's path back to the door, and ChewB found his courage and lunged toward the bear, which responded by reaching out its claws toward the canine.

"The bear made one more lunge to him, and I let out the deeps howl of, 'No,' and smacked him on his head one more time. And he backed up enough, so I went in the door and shut it," Koerber told WLOS-TV.

The man and his dog managed to avoid any injuries from the experience.

"It was a hair-raising experience, trust me," Koerber said. "Little Chewbster, he means the world to us. He's a good little guy."

Koerber said he has encountered bears outside before, but all of the previous sightings ended peacefully.

"I would say to a bear, 'Hey, keep your distance please,'" Koerber said. "We are friends and don't intend to hurt anyone. Leave us alone."

Koerber said he and his wife sought advice from animal protection group Protect Asheville Bears, which advised him to carry an airhorn and bear spray for any future encounters.

Florida Deputy Helps Mom of 6 Deliver Baby on Side of Highway

Image

Talk about an unexpected arrival!

A deputy in Hillsborough County in Florida helped a pregnant woman deliver a baby on the shoulder of Highway 60, authorities said in a news release.

In "panic," a driver approached the deputy, Master Deputy Daniel "Red" Jones, on the side of the highway, explaining that his wife was about to give birth, per the release.

After calling for help, Jones "sprang into action" — and just minutes later, the baby was born in the front seat of the car.

Authorities said the officer provided encouragement and emotional support and used his training to help deliver the newborn, a baby girl.

Police provided the bodycam video of Jones helping the woman give birth. In the video, Jones could be seen telling the woman to "breathe" as he took her hand.

Later in the video, the woman told the officer that her baby was "coming." The video then cut to show the officer holding up the baby girl to her mother.

After the child was delivered, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and transported the mother and child to the hospital for evaluation.

Authorities say the officer was "thrilled" to help deliver the baby and even recommended that the couple name the baby "Red" after him, the release noted.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister lauded the officer for his quick response during the hectic situation, saying, "I am extremely proud of Master Deputy Jones's quick actions and dedication to serving our community in any capacity."

He went on to note that this was the officer's third time helping to deliver a baby in an emergency situation since joining the team in December 2021.

Reptile catcher removes venomous snake from vacuum cleaner
By Ben Hooper
Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter

May 5 (UPI) -- An Australian snake catcher was called out to a vacation resort to relocate a venomous snake that was sucked up into a vacuum cleaner by a panicked holidaymaker.

Drew Godfrey of Hervey Bay Snake Catchers said he received a call from a couple who spotted a snake in their unit a Hervey Bay, Queensland, resort, and the husband called back a few minutes later.

"He called back quickly saying not to worry because his wife had vacuumed it up," Godfrey told Newsweek. "I explained that they are protected species and it would be cruel and illegal to leave it in there. They understood and were happy for us to come out."

Godfrey posted a video to Facebook showing him removing the snake, a mildly venomous yellow-faced whip snake, from the vacuum cleaner's reservoir.

"Just when you think you've seen it all in this job, someone calls you and says their wife has sucked a snake up with the vacuum cleaner," Godfrey wrote in his Facebook post.

Godfrey said yellow-faced whip snakes are often confused for far more dangerous eastern brown snakes. He said whip snakes are only mildly venomous, comparing their bites to bee stings.

"The snake was unharmed, just a little dusty and confused," Godfrey said. "It was just happy to be free."

He released the snake into a nearby wilderness area.

"Bet that sucked for you," he quipped to the reptile.

Deportation Possible for Russian After Taking Nude Photo in Bali
March 30, 2023*

Image

A Russian tourist identified only as Yuri is to be deported after taking nude photos in Bali. He posed completely naked from the waist down on the highest point on Mount Agung, widely believed by Hindus to be the home of the gods.

Indonesian authorities stated that Yuri’s behavior showed ‘no respect’ for Balinese culture or customs.

The peak is known as home to Mahadewa according to the Hindu Balinese. Mahadewa is the supreme manifestation of Lord Shiva, considered the most superior of all gods.

You need to obtain a permit just to climb the culturally-significant mountain. The Russian tourist took the photo standing on top of the mountain, arms spread wide, wearing a black hoodie and basically nothing else.

Yuri’s pants hung down by his ankles and he was angled facing the mountain range with his back (and butt) facing the camera. His Instagram post has since been deleted, but not before going viral over the weekend for all the wrong reasons.

The picture isn’t the only issue here either, as Yuri and six of his friends reportedly climbed Mount Agung without any permission. The photo caused issues everywhere, from the perception of the island itself to social media commenters who flooded the post.

Image

“He violated norms and showed no respect for our culture,” Bali Law and Human Rights Office head Anggiat Napitupulu said. Russian Yuri has pinned an apology to his page in place of the offensive photo post.

He captioned the video: “I want to apologize for my actions that desecrated the sacred volcano for the local population.

“There is no excuse for my actions,” the Russian tourist continued, “the only thing that led to what happened was my personal ignorance. Ignorance of the peculiarities of the local religion.” Yuri ended the post claiming: “I am ready to take part and financially support the ceremony of offerings to the gods.”

Yuri is banned from re-entering Indonesia for at least the next six months and has been permitted to star for a short time while he promotes ‘good behavior,’ all thanks to his apology.

The Bali Sun reported: “Although Yuri said that he was prepared to be deported should that be a suitable punishment for his actions, it appears at this stage that he will be permitted to remain in Indonesia and play an active role in promoting good behavior by becoming a model tourist.”

No final decisions have been made yet on whether the Russian will be deported from the island.

Florida man wins women’s poker tournament: ‘Insanity’

Image
David Hughes, 70, from Delton, Florida, competed in a $250 no-limit Texas Hold ’em game at the World Series of Poker’s Ladies event over the weekend.

He needed a better poker face.

A Florida man is facing backlash after competing in a women’s poker tournament and winning.

David Hughes participated in a $250 buy-in Ladies No-Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry) event at the World Series of Poker’s Ladies event at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, over the weekend. And social media was quick to skewer the gambler, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

Hughes, a 70-year-old from Delton, Florida, was allowed to enter the all-female tournament alongside 82 women.

Per its anti-discrimination legislation, Florida casinos by law cannot ban men from entering into a women’s tournament.

Nevada also prohibits excluding men from competing in a women’s tournament.

Hughes took home $5,555, beating out poker player Dayanna Ciabaton, who placed second.

Hughes’ disregard for the all-female competition set off a wave of controversy.

Pro-poker player Ebony Kenny took to Twitter to put out a bounty — which rewards players for trying to eliminate another — on Hughes.

“Dave here is the only man. While we appreciate the dead money, I really wish men would get what these events stand for. So I put a $300 bounty on his head and Tamra & Noah Piderit matched it,” Kenny tweeted.

Others, like British male professional poker player Charlie Carrel, also chimed in on Twitter.

“It pokes fun at the idea that anybody can identify as a woman and be allowed to enter women’s spaces,” Carrel wrote. “It does suck that it comes at the expense of the women’s only space. I wouldn’t do it.”

He added, “It does speak loudly to the insanity that’s playing out on a larger scale.”

Poker Hall of Famer Linda Johnson said via Poker News: “I love ladies-only poker tournaments. I would have no problem with them having a men’s only and I wouldn’t enter it as I would not qualify for it.”

She added that she would have no qualms about a “tournament for 26-year-old, motorcycle riding, Mohawk-haircut seniors and I wouldn’t enter it because I wouldn’t qualify.”

Hughes isn’t the first man to go all-in on a women’s poker tournament. Former World Series of Poker circuit event winner Abraham Korotki won the pot in a ladies no-limit Hold ’em event at Atlantic City’s Borgata Poker Open.

Shake, rattle and rule: Mother, 49, says she has found an apparition of King Charles in the top of a banana smoothie lid

A woman was left stunned after spotting King Charles in the lid of her banana smoothie.

Claire Aris says she could not believe it when she looked down and saw the Monarch staring back at her.

The 49-year-old thinks the drink's residue looks like the King's side profile. The mother made her discovery in a Sainsbury's carpark, after buying the shake at a Plymouth store.

Claire described her find as 'amazing'. (Honestly, where do they find these people?)

Image
The real King Charles compared to....

Image
The milkshake monarch (Umm No !)

She said: 'I thought today might be a good time to tell you of my amazing find of King Charles on the lid of my Banana smoothie.

'I was just sat in Sainsbury's car park with my daughter and I looked down and immediately said, 'Oh my God, it's King Charles!'

'This was a while ago, back when we lost the Queen. But I posted it to Facebook and all my friends were telling me to go to the newspapers and now of course it's gone a bit mad with the Coronation I thought it would be the right time.'

Image
The image is similar to how King Charles is seen on newly issued coins, which entered circulation in December.

The image is similar to how King Charles is seen on newly issued coins, which entered circulation in December.

The only difference is that in this picture the he is looking to his right, much like his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did on her currency.

The latest coins show the King looking to his left as is royal tradition when one monarch takes over from another.

When asked if she saw his appearance on her smoothie lid as a sign of something, Claire replied: 'Not really, no.'

(Ah.. so another St Joan of Arc - a chosen one to whom God has spoken through the dregs in her banana milkshake or whatever - now let's move on, the rest of us have a life)

Royal fans howl at Coronation food creations - Charles pizza

Image

A pizzeria has gotten into the spirit of The Coronation ahead of the historic weekend, whipping up a pizza inspired by the face of King Charles III, and they're not the only foodies having fun with the theme.

A pic of the crispy dish shows a base shaped like King Charles' face, with onion for hair and blobs of mozzarella for facial features. This face is framed by a pair of exaggerated ears, plus a crunchy chip crown on top for good measure, complete with bright jalapenos.

The pie was whipped up by the team at Villaggio Pizza in Eaglesham near Glasgow, and a pic has since been shared widely online, to widespread amusement.

Owner Gerry Sweeney first made the pizza last week, so he could take pics of his cheesy masterpiece to share on social media ahead of King Charles' Coronation.

Gerry told the Mirror: "We run specials every week. One week it may be a special burger, another week it's a special pizza. So I thought, we might do a special for The Coronation this week. So it was just a wee bit of fun!"

This isn't the first time Villaggio Pizza has gotten creative with their pizzas. They've previously made people's faces out of dough, including special birthday messages, and baked up spooky pumpkin pizzas for Halloween.

Reflecting on reactions to their latest creation, Gerry continued: "When I did it last week, there were people coming in looking at it, because I'd just put it on display at the counter.

"They were laughing, taking photographs, and sending them to their family and friends down south. It's been well received!"

Many others were left chuckling away after a pic was shared on Reddit, hailing it as "hilarious" and a "pizza fit for a king".

Huge phallic likeness mowed into lawn at King Charles’ coronation event site

As far as pranks go, this one will be hard to beat.

Pranksters have mowed a giant, symmetrical erect penis into the lawn of a venue where a major coronation celebration is set to occur.

Image

According to multiple outlets, the 30-foot phallus appeared overnight on the lawn of Royal Crescent in Bath, England, and was visible Thursday. The site is scheduled to host a Georgian-themed “grand coronation party” on Saturday, in honour of King Charles III’s coronation.

“Celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Georgian era,” a flyer for the Royal Crescent event reads. “Decorate your own regal crown, watch demonstrations on royal fashion and visit the Georgian Cook cooking up delicious recipes in the kitchen.”

While many are likely tickled by the cocky prank, it’s sure to rub others the wrong way.

Image

The Royal Crescent is a tourist destination in Bath, known for its “perfect lawn” that dates back to the 18th century and was featured in the Netflix drama Bridgerton.

The Bath and North East Somerset Council, which is responsible for the lawn, have not addressed the issue publicly so far.

Iceberg lovers go wild over viral photos of the 'dickie berg' off Newfoundland's coast

Image

A man from Dildo, N.L. has captured the attention of iceberg lovers after photographing an oddly-shaped hunk — now popularly known as the "dickie berg" on social media — off the coast of Newfoundland.

"I'm gettin' a lot of response, a lot of reaction to the photo because of its resemblance to ... part of the male anatomy, say," chuckled drone photographer Ken Pretty.

In an interview Friday, Pretty said he noticed from his very first photograph that the iceberg, in an area of the province known as Conception Bay, had online potential.

The berg got its nickname from the term "dickie bird," a Newfoundland euphemism for the male anatomy.

Pictures of it on Facebook had garnered over 3,000 shares and "a lot of comments" by Friday morning, Pretty said.

"Maybe I should call him," one user wrote.

"Frozen stiff," remarked another.

Pretty says he's lucky he got there when he did.

"It's melting all the time. I mean, it might go limp," he said.

Image

It's already shaping up to be a banner year for icebergs in Newfoundland and Labrador, with tourists and locals alike sharing their encounters online after a stretch of less-than-impressive seasons.

Canadian Ice Service data shows over 200 icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland alone as of last week, with dozens more off the coast of Labrador making their way south.

"Onshore winds brought in both the pack ice and the bergs," said Diane Davis, who runs a Facebook group for iceberg hunters in the province. "If the trend holds up, we should see them for May and June, too. Mother Nature only gave us a handful last year."

But anyone rushing off to see the "dickie berg" of Harbour Grace for themselves is in for a disappointment.

Facebook users say the tip has fallen off.

Prince Harry’s view blocked by Princess Anne’s feathers during Charles’ coronation

Image

Eagle-eyed royal watchers noticed that Prince Harry was obscured during his father’s coronation ceremony — recalling the moment Meghan Markle was similarly blocked during the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II last year.

Harry, 38, was seated in the third row at Westminster Abbey while his father, King Charles III, and stepmother, Queen Camilla, were crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

When the cameras panned the royal family, however, the ginger-haired Duke of Sussex was blocked by feathers from the hat of his aunt, Princess Anne.

“First there was the candle…Now there is the feather,” one viewer joked, referring to the moment when Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, was obscured by a cleverly-placed candle during the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September.

Another detail-oriented fan noted that Harry was also blocked by the bearskin cap of a member of a Royal Guard.

Both Harry and Meghan, 41, have been estranged from the royal family since they moved to California in 2020.

Their shocking Netflix docuseries, followed earlier this year by Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” is said to have only deepened the rift.

After weeks of speculation that the couple would miss the coronation altogether, it was announced last month that Harry would attend solo while Meghan stayed in Montecito with their children.

Harry is also skipping most of the festivities after the ceremony and is expected to board a flight back to the States within two hours of the conclusion of the formal service.

UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGISTS REVEAL FOOTAGE OF NORWAY’S “OLDEST” SHIPWRECK

Image

In 2022, a team from the Norwegian Défense Research Institute and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announcement the discovery of a shipwreck during a survey to map WW2 ammunitions dumped in Norway’s lake Mjøsa.
According to the press announcement at the time, the ship, named the Storfjord wreck, was suggested to date from the 14th century or possibly earlier, and could be Norway’s oldest known shipwreck.

Sonar images showed the hull to be around 10-metres in length by 2.5 metres in width, and is situated on the lakebed at around 410 metres beneath the surface.

From the design, it was suggested that the ship could be a clinker type construction, a traditional Norse boatbuilding method that overlapped the planks of the hull to reduce overall weight, and that the ship likely had a square sail comparable to those used by the Vikings.

In May 2023, underwater archaeologists used a remote-controlled underwater vehicle (ROV) to film the wreck site, revealing the footage at NTNU during Ocean Week.

The footage shows that parts of the hull are in situ protruding above the lakebed, which the researchers suggest are the remains of the upper strake, a longitudinal course of planking which runs from the ships stempost (at the bows) to the sternpost or transom (at the rear). The footage also shows that the strakes have no rowlocks, suggesting that the vessel was self-propelled instead of rowed.

Øyvind Ødegård, from the NTNU University Museum, told sciencenorway.no: “On top, you have a slightly stronger, slightly rounded strake that reinforces and prevents it from breaking when you enter or exit the boat, or row.”

Dating the wreck from the footage is still inconclusive, however, it does give further support to the theory of the ship being a clinker-type construction.
