17-year cicadas to emerge in Ohio this summer

Image

CLEVELAND (WOIO) - The year was 2004. Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in a college dorm room, the final episode of “Friends” aired, and Ken Jennings won 74 games on “Jeopardy!”

There was also something else going on in 2004; the periodical cicadas that will provide background noise for us this summer went underground.

Although there are annual cicadas that emerge, as their name suggests, every year, periodical cicadas go underground in either 13- or 17-year cycles.

Spring 2021 will mark the start of a once-every-17-year mating season for these 2021 cicadas, known as Brood X.

That means you’ll be hearing lots of chirping in the summer evenings.

According to cicadamania.com, cicadas typically emerge in the middle of May, once the weather starts to get warmer. A warm, rainy day is often the final push for these insects to come out from almost two decades of living underground.

Southwestern Ohio also sees a lot of these cicadas, but they’ve also been reported in Northeast Ohio.

“Communities and farms with large numbers of cicadas emerging at once may have a substantial noise issue,” said Eric Day, an entomologist in Virginia Tech’s Department of Entomology told CBS News. “Hopefully, any annoyance at the disturbance is tempered by just how infrequent — and amazing — this event is.”

And if the cicadas aren’t enough, don’t worry; the Lake Erie midges will also be back (but quieter!) this summer.

Hilarious moment moggy hitches a ride on pony's back

Image
This is the comical moment a black cat attempts to sit on the back of an unwilling horse, holding on for dear life as the horse tries to buck him off.

The daring cat hitched a rodeo ride on the Palomino horse after jumping from a nearby fence onto the pony's back at the stable in Alberta, Canada, on January 21.

In the video the horse can be seen trying to unseat the feline rider by knocking him off with his head, however he is unable to reach the cat.

Image

Resulting to brute force the horse goes into buckaroo mode, shaking his back from side to side as the cat incredibly maintains his balance.

Eventually the cat is thrown off with force, landing on his feet before making a run for it.

A number of women can be heard laughing in the background of the video as the brazen moggy seems to enjoy the daredevil challenge.

One woman can be heard saying: 'He said get off, he's getting so angry.'

The horse rider who filmed the clip said: 'My sisters and I were out feeding the horses when we saw the black cat walk down the fence and hop up on the palomino horse's back with no help from us.'

Social media users suggested the animals were joking around, writing: 'Looks like they are playing.'

Another cat-lover accused the horse of being selfish for not letting the feline perch on its warm back in the snow.

Former White Supremacist Store and Klan Meeting Space is Being Turned Into a Community Center to Promote Healing

Image

One of the surest ways to keep history from repeating itself is to shine a light in its darkest corners, and that’s exactly what 67-year-old Reverend David Kennedy has set out to do in the town of Laurens, South Carolina.

In 2019, Reverend Kennedy and local historian Regan Freeman founded the Echo Foundation. Its mission: transforming a symbol of racial inequality into an opportunity for reconciliation and education. Their target: the historically segregated Echo Theater, later home to a storefront, museum, and recruitment center dedicated to glorifying white supremacy known as the Redneck Shop.

“To be a Black person in America, I have too many stories to share that people wouldn’t believe,” Reverend Kennedy, told CNN. “Once you choose to speak out, people become fearful of us, and you have to be ready to sacrifice your mind, your heart, your soul, to tell the truth about history and what they did to our people. I was ready to make that sacrifice.”

Reverend Kennedy was instrumental in a lengthy legal battle to close the Redneck Shop. His story may seem familiar to you. The part of his saga that chronicles his outreach to a former foe was made into the 2018 film ‘Burden’.

John Howard and Michael Burden were co-owners of the Redneck Shop. When Burden broke from the ranks of the KKK, Reverend Kennedy offered sanctuary and spiritual succor to him and his family.

The Redneck Shop was closed by the courts in 2012. Rather than destroy its contents, many of the artifacts will be used as teaching points to engage in meaningful, transformative conversation about all-too-recent history.

So far, the Echo Project has raised close to $375,000 toward its goal of restoration and renaissance for the Echo Theater. In addition to the museum, the space will house community classrooms.

“We don’t want to just have a museum to tell this story, the struggle for justice, and the fight against the Klan, but we also want to detail what happened here to make sure it never happens again,” Freeman told CNN. “The Echo Theater went from being a segregated movie theater to a literal Klan’s store to being in the possession of a Black minister, and it is about to become a place for reconciliation, justice, and healing.”

In September, several pilots in the airspace near Los Angeles International Airport spotted something odd: what appeared to be “a guy in a jetpack,” as one bewildered pilot told LA’s tower, flying around 3,000 feet.

Several months later, and after investigation by local law enforcement, the FAA and the FBI, it’s still unclear what the airline pilots saw. Even a December sighting caught on video did little to make sense of the phenomenon.

But according to a new report by The Drive, we have a new possible explanation: a drone hoisting an inflatable jetpack-wearing dummy.

As seen in the video embedded at the bottom of this post, a custom made drone built by German RC enthusiast Ralph Kayser, or something similar to it, could indeed probably fool unsuspecting airline pilots — at least from a distance.

Inflatable Jetpack
“Mike Bumberger, our LEAP [Law Enforcement Assistance Program] Agent shared that the FBI interviewed the American Airlines pilot that made the jetpack sighting,” John Blanco, the aviation safety manager at the Los Angeles Flight Standards District Office, wrote in a September email obtained by The Drive. “The pilot said what he saw was exactly like the drone in the YouTube video below.”

Here’s the YouTube video in question. To its credit, The Drive had also previously pointed to the exact same video as an explanation for the sightings.
video: https://youtu.be/1nNBRShBVVM

The Drive also was able to cross out local personal aircraft maker Jetpack Aviation from the list of suspects. Emails obtained by the news outlet show that David Mayman, the chief test pilot at Jetpack Aviation, told investigators that they hadn’t flown for months.

Mayman also told investigators that he didn’t believe any jetpack operators would be able to sustain flight at 3,000 feet. :(

Tiger undergoes rare hip replacement surgery at Illinois zoo

Image
Veterinarians, technicians and staff prepare Malena, a 10-year-old endangered Amur tiger, for total hip replacement surgery at Brookfield Zoo, Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021 in Brookfield, Ill. According to the CZS, the tiger has arthritis in her left hip and the surgery is believed to be the first time a full joint replacement will be attempted on a tiger in North America. (Ashlee Rezin Garcia/ /Chicago Sun-Times via AP)

A 10-year-old Amur tiger with arthritis underwent hip replacement surgery at a zoo outside Chicago on Wednesday, and her surgical team is confident the procedure will add years to her life.

Veterinarians at Brookfield Zoo noted that, like humans, animals routinely develop degenerative problems in their joints as they age. When the tiger, Malena, arrived at the zoo last year, she had already been diagnosed with arthritis of the hip and was receiving pain relief medications.

“We’re hopeful that by doing the surgery now, we’re able to really get on top of this arthritis and keep her comfortable so that she’s able to live a good quality life for many years down the road,” said Dr. Michael Adkesson, of the Chicago Zoological Society.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Cook, of the University of Missouri, who led the surgery team, said the 6.5-hour surgery was very challenging and took longer than expected. But he said the operation was a success and that the tiger seemed to have full range of motion in her hip after the procedure.

“The first six weeks are critical, but we’ve given it our best shot and are pleased with the result,” Cook said.

A CT scan determined that veterinarians wouldn’t be able manage the tiger’s hip and keep her comfortable without performing surgery.

Florida-based medical device maker Arthrex used data from Malena’s CT scan to design, manufacture, and donate a custom-made implant that is specifically designed for Malena’s joint, Cook said.

“We’ve got to replace both parts, the ball and the socket, and we’ve got to do that in a really minimally invasive way so that we protect her musculature and give her the best chance of recovery,” he said before the surgery.

Malena is not the first tiger to undergo total hip replacement. Previous attempts with non-custom implant designs in a snow leopard, a cheetah and a tiger in Germany have had mixed success.

According to Adkesson, the post-operative period is going to be challenging because of the need to keep Malena quiet and calm.

“Obviously, from a therapy standpoint, we’re not able to get in with the tiger the same way we might do physical therapy on a dog or a domestic cat,” the veterinarian said. “But our care staff have a wonderful relationship with these animals, and they’ll be able to get her up and kind of moving around by asking her to come to different areas of the enclosure.”

Amur tigers — also known as a Siberian tigers — once roamed in Russia and China, but are now endangered; Their population in the wild is estimated between 500 and 600 animals.

Firefighters attempting goose rescue in Michigan find hunting decoy

Firefighters in Michigan said an attempted goose rescue on a frozen river turned out to be the proverbial wild goose chase when the suspected injured bird turned out to be a hunting decoy.

Image

The Monroe Township Fire Department said firefighters responded Tuesday to a report of an injured goose on the River Raisin, near Waterloo Park.

Photos posted to Facebook by firefighter Austin Schmitt shows firefighters in rescue gear venturing out on the ice to reach what they believed to be a bird in distress.

The firefighters reached the bird-shaped object and discovered it was a decoy water fowl for hunting use.

"It ended up being a good training session, actually," Monroe Township Fire Department Chief Mark Cherney told WXYZ-TV. "In the end, we can sleep well at night. A bird is not suffering."

PIZZA COMPANY UNVEILS PIZZA WITHOUT PIZZA

Image

Popular “pizza” franchise Pizza Company took a slice of netizens’ attention on Thursday with its new menu: a non-pizza pizza – the whole thing consists of a ring of mini cheese burgers, fused together into a circular crust. It’ll be available for orders until Feb. 23.

The burger crusts is as large as a M sized pizza, has 12 mini-cheeseburgers, comes with ketchup and tomato mustard sauce, and costs 189 baht. In justification of its latest innovation, the company cited popular demand.

“We’re here to please the crust lovers who really like our double cheeseburger crusts!” the announcement said.

Many comments were positive, though some expressed their bewilderment.

Such culinary evolution. Five hundred years later, historians will debate about why this item was called a pizza at all,” Facebook user Taksapol Sriwachirawat predicted. “And why Italy invaded Thailand.”

“I don’t think this is pizza anymore. Farangs will probably be confused,” user Khun Nai AiAi added with concern.

The Pizza Company franchise is part of Minor Group, which also runs other food franchises like Swensens, Sizzler, Dairy Queen, Burger King, The Coffee Club, and so on. It previously teased about an upcoming “new innovation” in a statement released to the media on Jan. 14.

“The Pizza Company will focus on bringing out new innovation (Product & Service Innovation) by creating modern and creative menus, services and activities to create a phenomenon and light up the year,” the company said.

The same statement from Pizza Company also said celebrity Paris “Ice” Intrarakomalyasut was chosen as the presenter for its New York-style pizza because of his “half-caste look who represents the new generation that favours a modern and fun lifestyle and is friendly.”

“Half-caste” is an outdated, offensive term from the British colonial era used to describe people of mixed ethnicities. Paris is an actor and singer of British descent.

Update: Italian ambassador to Thailand Lorenzo Galanti has issued a tongue-in-cheek response to the story:

A non-pizza deserves a non -war. But food lovers might still want to try the real thing

Anti-Putin Snowman Protest  :(

Image

An activist in northern Russia has been detained for organizing a "mass rally" against President Vladimir Putin using snowmen she built, a fellow activist said Wednesday.

A photo shared by Arkhangelsk activist Andrei Borovikov shows four snowmen holding up anti-Putin placards. One of them references the billion-dollar palace that jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny claimed belongs to the president in a viral investigation.

Yelena Kalinina was detained for organizing a mass picket of snowmen,” Borovikov, Navalny’s former Arkhangelsk office coordinator, wrote on Twitter.

The cops don’t know what to do, they’re calling higher-ups every other minute,” he added.

Local media later reported that police tore down the snowmen’s placards (one of which read “Down With the Tsar”) and filed a report against Kalinina.

The footage has been viewed tens of thousands of times across social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit and YouTube.

"This is nightmare fuel," wrote one Twitter user.

"Well, this is pretty terrifying! Thank goodness the skier never lost his balance!" another remarked.

Luckily, the skier managed to escape the brown bear without any injuries by displaying admirable presence of mind. Ion Zaharia, a spokesperson of the County Gendarmerie Inspectorate, told Digi24 that at one point, the skier threw his bag down to distract the animal and managed to get away.

Police confirmed that three calls reporting the bear had been made that day. Cops went to the scene in an all-terrain vehicle and the bear, possibly scared by noise, took refuge in the forest.

Where Pets Are Family

Image

When Muriel Shepherd sits in the lobby at The Briton House in Toronto, people stop to talk. Not only is the 105-year-old resident a delight to converse with, but she has a buddy who attracts attention - her dog, Misty.

The snow-white dog moved into The Briton House - a Toronto retirement and assisted-living residence - with Shepherd and sleeps in her room. Still mobile at 105, Shepherd walks to the dining room for her meals with just the aid of a cane. When Misty needs longer walks, staff members are happy to oblige.

May Parry, social supervisor at The Briton House, says it's important for residents to be able to choose to have a pet. "A pet is something familiar, part of home life and really part of your family," she says.

Image

Still, there are limits to the pet-welcome policy. Size is a factor, for example. Misty, whom Parry says looks "like a Maltese, only bigger," already has company at The Briton House.

A dog accompanies a young woman who comes to visit her grandmother every day. And a newcomer has arranged to bring her dog to live with her.

Meanwhile, at the Grenadier Retirement Residence in Toronto, at least five dogs and 10 cats live with their owners. "These are their family," says Jane Jones, community relations manager. "Why should they move in and have to give them up? It isn't fair."

Permitting birds, cats and small dogs to live with owners is a "long-standing policy" at the Grenadier, says Jones. Residents must be able to look after their pets themselves or hire someone to do so since pet care isn't the job of the staff.

Not only the pet owners benefit. So do other residents, who enjoy petting the animals and helping their owners take them for walks. "It makes the place more homey," says Jones.

While pets in residence might still be a novelty at retirement and long-term care homes, the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program brings well-behaved dogs into some locations to give seniors a chance to socialize with them. A volunteer owner brings a dog into a residence once a week, building a relationship with residents.

Japanese loos that say hello, warm your bum and glow in dark become Brit lockdown hit

Celebs like Jonathan Ross and the Kardashians are big fans of the bathroom tech that have got in-build control panels which make them close and flush themselves when you've finished your business

Image

Amazing Japanese loos which flush themselves, glow in the dark and open and close automatically have been a surprise lockdown smash.

Some of the techie toilets will even keep your bum warm.

The Masked Singer’s Jonathan Ross, will.i.am and the Kardashians are all said to be fans of the bathroom trend.

Analysis of Google searches revealed thousands of us have been hunting for them online.

The toilets, which have got in-build control panels, come with an array of features including the toilet “greeting you” by automatically opening the lid as you approach it and closing when you have finished.

They also flush themselves and offer massage options, as well as having heated seats.

Other features loved by their fans including “silent” flushing, music on demand and even an choice of built-in air freshener aromas. Some of the fancy loos, which can cost up to £10,000, glow in the dark.

Others can measure a user’s blood sugar, pulse, blood pressure and body fat content while they are spending a penny.

A spokesman for interior design experts Homedit.com which did the Google research said: “Far outranking any other smart bathroom gadgets is an LED Mirror, with average monthly searches amounting to 73,400.

“It seems we just can’t escape our love for the big screen, as a bathroom TV ranks in second place with 22,700 searches - with a Japanese toilet not far behind.”

They added: “Smart home technology has come leaps and bounds, offering a whole host of smart devices that not only make our lives that little bit easier, but also conserve water, electricity and the environment.”

N.B. boy driving mini-Zamboni on backyard rink grabs NHL's attention

Image

A five-year-old boy from Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, N.B., has been picked up by the big leagues.

A video of Nicholas Allain riding a mini-Zamboni on his backyard rink has been shared by the NHL on its Instagram page.

In the video, Nicholas is driving a battery-operated John Deere tractor made for kids that was modified to clean the backyard rink his dad, Marty, built for him.

It was Marty's first time making a backyard rink.

A Zamboni? He had no idea it was going to be such a hit right out of the gate.

"It was pretty cool," Marty said, adding that the NHL Instagram account contacted him in advance to ask permission to share his video.

The NHL's official account has 4.5-million followers.

"A lot of my friends, and even people that I didn't talk to in a while, reached out and thought it was pretty cool," he said.

Marty originally posted the video online in a Facebook page for people who make outdoor rinks. Things just snowballed from there before catching the attention of the NHL.

He said his son may not realize how much the video has been shared because he's so young, but he said Nicholas was pretty excited to look at the post the NHL made showing him driving the Zamboni with the caption "FRESH SHEET ALERT."

Image

"He watches hockey a little bit," said Marty. He said his son's favorite team is the Vegas Golden Knights because Lukas Cormier, who plays for the team, is also from Sainte-Marie-de-Kent.

Marty said he decided to make the rink this year because he was concerned that minor hockey, and access to the local arena, would be interrupted due to COVID-19, which turned out to be true.

He started planning in the fall and started building the pieces in the garage.

"It was a lot of time," he laughed. "I didn't count my hours but a lot of Friday nights in the garage with a few cold pops."

The project turned out to be quite elaborate with rounded corners and boards painted to look like a professional rink, topped off with bright flood lights for practices at night. He's already planning to make the rink bigger next year.

"I wanted to do something special for my son," he said. "I wanted to do something where he could really practise his shot."

It didn't take Marty long to realize that he had the perfect opportunity to make a small Zamboni for his son to help care for the ice surface.

Marty rigged the machine with studded tires, a bucket, hose and a sheet of cloth to groom the ice.

"He can actually manoeuvre around and get it all done if he wants to — if a five-year-old wants to," Marty laughed.

Marty said Nicholas would rather skate on the rink than clean it, even with his Zamboni.

France got its first Michelin-starred vegan restaurant

Image

France – the home of foie gras, coq au vin, and by no means traditionally a bastion of plant-based dining – made culinary history this week. A Michelin star was awarded to a vegan restaurant there for the first time.

Restaurant ONA, which stands for Origine Non Animale (“animal-free origin”), was launched in Ares, near Bordeaux, in 2016 following a crowdfunding campaign and a loan from a green bank.

Chef Claire Vallée, who runs the establishment, was also awarded a green star, which Michelin introduced last year to acknowledge restaurants that set the bar for ethical practices.

They Had Six COVID Vaccines Left And Were Stuck In The Snow — So They Started Knocking On Car Windows

One of the drivers in Oregon started "doing a happy dance in his seat when he finally believed we were actually going to give him a vaccine," according to a public health official.

Image

Some lucky Americans have been gifted with a surprise coronavirus vaccine while shopping at a supermarket. Others have followed social media rumors to score a dose.

But six people in Oregon on Tuesday managed to secure their shot because they happened to be stuck on a snowy highway at the right place at the right time.

Officials with the Josephine County, near the California border, had been holding a three-day COVID-19 vaccination event at a local high school when they had to close early. "A snowstorm was coming in during the clinic, and we had to leave before the vaccines were administered," Josephine County Public Health Director Mike Weber told BuzzFeed News.

The team had six doses of the Moderna vaccine left over that had been set aside for individuals in the nearby town of Grants Pass, but an accident on the snowy road caused a traffic jam.

Knowing they'd be stuck for quite some time, and the Moderna shot had just six hours left in its shelf life, they got to work looking for other stranded motorists who might want a surprise vaccine.

"We hopped out and just started going car to car," Weber said.

Amid heavy snowfall and on a road blanketed in snow, the team had to convince drivers this wasn't a practical joke.

"It was a mixed bag of reactions," Weber said. "Most people found it funny. It's kind of an amusing situation to find yourself in. It's not something most people expect!"

One man was so happy he even jumped out of his car and ripped his shirt off to receive his injection.

"He was doing a happy dance in his seat when he finally believed we were actually going to give him a vaccine," said Weber.

Another woman who received a dose worked for the local Sheriff's Office and had actually been on her way to the pop-up vaccination clinic when the weather delayed her.

The lucky six will receive cards in the mail allowing them to return for their booster shots in four weeks' time.

Weber said it is one of the coolest operations he's ever been involved in.

"This is what public health does: We're here to help the community," he said. "Right now, the best thing we can do for the community is get these vaccines out."
