Zoo rumbled after trying to replace wolf with Rottweiler dog as it's 'cheaper'

The Xiangwushan Zoo, in China, needed a replacement when its wolf died so used a Rottweiler dog after bosses argued it was cheaper and visitors wouldn't mind as it's a close relative

Image

A zoo has admitted trying to pass off a dog as a wolf.

The Xiangwushan Zoo, in China, needed a replacement after its wolf died.

Bosses decided it was cheaper to use a Rottweiler instead of getting a new one.

They argued as the dog is a close relative of the wolf, visitors to the attraction in Xianning, in the province of Hubei, would not complain.

But customers were not fooled and quickly spotted the pet in the cage.

One filmed the locked up animal in a cage.

Image

According to the man who shot the video, identified by his last name Xu, the zoo ticket costs only 15 yuan (£1.66).

Visitors are told they will see tigers, lions and other animals including a wolf.

Zoo managers confirmed there had been a wolf before, but it had died due to old age.

They claimed the cage was empty afterwards and there was no place for the dog.

The cage became its new home as a legitimate heir to the wolf and being closely related, they argued.

The local forestry bureau said that it will conduct an inspection.

The video was posted on the Chinese social network Baidu where it attracted attention.

One user said: “At least find a husky, it would be more convincing.”

Another commented: “Have people in the city never seen a dog?”

While one wrote: “I suspect that the giant panda in the zoo was performed by humans.”

Back in 2013, another Chinese zoo in Henan province was accused of pretending a Tibetan mastiff dog was an African lion.

The fraud unravelled when the pooch started barking.

Visitors accused the park of trying to “cheat” them.

PARIS — Europe’s oldest person, French nun Sister Andre, has survived COVID-19 and will celebrate her 117th birthday this week, her caregivers said.

Lucile Randon, who took the name of Sister Andre when she joined a Catholic charitable order in 1944, tested positive for coronavirus in her retirement home in Toulon, southern France, on Jan. 16. She was isolated from other residents, but displayed no symptoms.

Asked if she was scared to have COVID, Sister Andre told France’s BFM television, “No, I wasn’t scared because I wasn’t scared to die… I’m happy to be with you, but I would wish to be somewhere else – join my big brother and my grandfather and my grandmother.”

David Tavella, spokesman for the Sainte Catherine Labouré retirement home, said she was doing well.

“We consider her to be cured. She is very calm and she is looking forward to celebrating her 117th birthday on Thursday.”

He said Sister Andre, who is blind but very spirited, will celebrate her birthday with a smaller group of residents than usual because of coronavirus infection risk.

“She has been very lucky,” he added.

Sister Andre, who was born on Feb. 11, 1904, is the world’s second-oldest living person according to the Gerontology Research Group’s (GRG) World Supercentenarian Rankings List. The oldest person is Japan’s Kane Tanaka, who turned 118 on Jan. 2.

The world’s 20 oldest people in the GRG list are all female.

Emu on the loose after escape from Washington state farm

Image

A farm in Washington state is asking residents to keep a lookout for an escaped emu that slipped through a damaged section of fencing.

AJ's Acre in Everett said someone cut through the facility's fence Wednesday night, allowing three emus to get loose.

Two of the large Australian birds were soon recaptured, but the third, named Sarah, remained at large.

The farm said the emu was last seen wandering through a Mukilteo neighborhood.

The owners said animal control has been notified of the flightless bird's escape and members of the public are being asked not to approach Sarah, as she could become spooked and run into traffic or go into hiding.

Underwater Robot Deploys and Lifts Victims to the Surface When They’re Drowning in Pool or Lake

Image

Many swimming pools in Germany don’t have enough trained lifeguards—and in many places, this skilled labor shortage is leading to closures. The solution could be a floating underwater rescue robot.

According to one German life-saving association, nearly 420 people drowned in Germany in 2019, with the majority losing their lives in fresh water lakes, but also in swimming pools.

Now, a team of researchers from the Institute for Advanced Systems Technology of Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technologies, and Image Exploitation (IOSB) is aiming to improve the situation with an aquatic robot that uses AI, the only one of its kind worldwide.

The scientists have used their years of expertise in the area of underwater robotics to develop the autonomous device that will assist lifeguards and rescue swimmers in emergencies.

“There are typical postures that you can use to recognize when someone is in danger,” says computer scientist Helge Renkewitz, who led the team in close collaboration with the water rescue service, Wasserrettungsdienstes Halle e.V.

Surveillance cameras mounted on the swimming pool’s ceiling register the movement patterns and position of the drowning person in the pool, and send the coordinates to the robot. It is safely stored away from prying eyes in a docking station on the swimming pool floor, which opens in an emergency.

Once the vehicle has reached its destination, it locates the endangered person and carries them to the surface. A mechanism for fixing the rescuee in place prevents lifeless bodies from sliding down as they surface. This mechanism can also be mounted on other underwater vehicles.

Successful open-water testing

In lakes, drones and zeppelin systems take on the task of the surveillance cameras. “These drones and advertising balloons can easily be fitted with cameras,” says Renkewitz. Because the visibility is restricted, the underwater vehicle must be equipped with acoustic sensors instead of optical ones. Sound wave echoes can be used to determine people’s positions and orientation so precisely that the robot can autonomously head for the target person and pick them up.

This has been proven to work in practice through the very impressive open-water testing that researchers conducted at the Hufeisensee lake in Halle (Saale).

An 80-kilogram dummy was deposited at a depth of three meters. The robot then picked it up, secured it in place, brought it to the surface within a second, and carried it via the shortest route – a distance of 40 meters – to shore, where the rescue team was already waiting.

When the robot is informed of an emergency, a signal alerts the team immediately. “The full rescue operation lasted just over two minutes. Casualties must be resuscitated within five minutes to avoid long-term damages of the brain. We were able to stay within this critical time frame without any problems,” says Renkewitz.

The future outlook

Equipped with batteries, motor, cameras, and optical and navigational sensors, the current system is 90 centimeters long, 50 centimeters high, and 50 centimeters wide. The objective of Renkewitz’s team is to further reduce the size of the rescue system and build different versions for use in swimming pools and lakes. They aim to make it smaller, lighter, and more cost-effective than the current prototype, which is based on a pre-existing underwater vehicle.

Instead, the future robot will have the streamlined design of a manta ray.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, a patent has already been filed for the aquatic robot. In modified versions, it can take on further tasks – such as offshore and dam wall inspections or being used to monitor the health of fish in fish farms.

The underwater vehicles have a very broad range of applications, such as detecting and verifying archaeological artifacts at the bottom of lakes—where fewer victims will end up, thanks to the new robot.

Dilapidated garage hits the Toronto housing market for $729,000

Image

TORONTO -- A dilapidated garage with no bedrooms, bathrooms or kitchen in Toronto’s fired up housing market is selling for an eye-watering $729,000.

The property, located at 951B Greenwood Avenue in the Danforth Village area, recently hit the market and is "conveniently located with subway, schools, shops and other amenities nearby," according to the listing.

The lot itself, located in the Greenwood and Coxwell area, is about 20-feet-wide and 100-feet-deep and has a parking space. In photographs of the listing, a small garage can be seen standing between two houses. A parking space is visible in the front of the garage and a few trees and plants can be seen behind it.

According to the listing, the property is being sold for land value only.

Property taxes for the home will set the new owner back $2,644.69 each year.

Image

This same property drew attention in 2019 when it hit the market for nearly $600,000.

It doesn't appear any work has been done on the property since it was first listed but the price has jumped nearly $130,000.

The Toronto Real Estate Board said in January the average price of a home sold last year hit a new record as the number of sales climbed 8.4 per cent compared with 2019.

The board says the average selling price in Greater Toronto was $929,699 in 2020, up 13.5 per cent from $819,279 compared with 2019.

The board says after a steep drop in the spring due to the pandemic, the market took off in the second half of the year.

‘Essential leaders’: why empowering women is key to tackling the climate crisis

Image

Empowering women and girls is among the best hopes for tackling climate change, an international charity has said.

On International Women’s Day, ActionAid – which works with the poorest women and girls in the world – highlighted its project in Cambodia that trains female leaders to help their communities deal with flooding and other issues caused by rising temperatures.

The charity’s Women’s Champion initiative helps villages and farms protect themselves by setting up early warning systems, building defences and planting protective mangrove barriers.

Research shows that women and girls are disproportionately impacted by climate change. Figures from the UN show that 70 per cent of the 1.3 billion people living in poverty are women and that 80 per cent of people displaced by climate change are women.

Women in developing countries tend to work in industries that are vulnerable to extreme weather, such as farming and fishing. They also have less access to education than their male counterparts, as well as worse access to basic human rights such as being able to move freely or buy land.

Few women are taught skills such as how to swim or to climb trees, and as a result, more women and girls tend to die in disasters too, ActionAid has found.

Despite this, women and girls are often left out of decision-making when it comes to climate change.

ActionAid’s new campaign, She is the Answer, highlights why women must no longer be excluded from conversations as communities and nations make plans to deal with the impact of climate change.

And it isn’t alone in positing women’s empowerment as a key potential solution. Among 76 solutions for curbing global warming to 2 degrees Celsius, empowering women and girls in developing countries ranked second on a report by Project Drawdown, a US not-for-profit that researches the most effective ways to reduce planet-warming emissions.

The organisation estimates that girls’ education and family planning would reduce carbon by 85 gigatons by 2050.

Studies show that where women have higher social and political status, their countries have 12 per cent lower carbon dioxide emissions.

“We know that women and girls are essential leaders in helping their communities develop resilience to climate change,” said Rachid Boumnijel, head of humanitarian programmes at ActionAid UK, “ and that when women are empowered to make decisions in an emergency response, their whole community recovers faster.”

Much of the land in Cambodia is a floodplain within the basin of the Mekong River. Overflowing waterways and flooding are commonplace during the monsoon season. However, factors connected to climate change – such as rising sea levels, unpredictable seasons and erratic rainfall – have been contributing to more intense storms, floods and droughts.
Extreme weather is causing depleted fish stocks and crop failures, pushing families who rely solely on fishing and farming for food and income deeper into poverty.

Varou Mat is a nursery school assistant in Cambodia. She is married to a fisherman and explained that most families in the community rely on fishing for their livelihoods.

“If fishing is suspended, there’s no income or jobs,” she said. “They have no choice but to force their children to drop out of school to work in the factory to earn some money.”

Varou Mat has been trained as a Women’s Champion and is helping to create floating schools, spreading knowledge of sustainable farming practices and educating the next generation in new livelihoods that are less likely to be impacted by climate change.

Since becoming a champion, Varou Mat has been encouraging her fellow villagers to pursue other sources of food and income, such as growing their own vegetables and fruit trees, as well as raising chickens.
“I explain to them the benefits, as it costs us nothing. We can use leftover rice as food for the chickens, for example.”

Varou Mat has also demanded that the local authorities upgrade the village’s road and sewage system to withstand floods more effectively.

She says that because of the Women’s Champion network, during local meetings women now feel, “brave to speak up about their problems, their needs and what they want”.

Samphy Eng from ActionAid Cambodia, who works with the Women’s Champions, said the project has given her “hope” and she hopes the network will be expanded.

“It is so important that we challenge traditional patriarchal structures – we must champion women leaders and make sure their voices are heard so that women and girls are no longer marginalised,” Eng said. “Only then can communities truly thrive in our new world altered by climate change.”

Even in the UK, women can be excluded from the climate conversation. The UN’s annual climate change conference COP26 is being hosted in Glasgow this November but it has already been subject to criticism after it was revealed that only three of the UK’s 12-strong team are women.

Boumnijel said it is imperative that women and girls everywhere are included, empowered and listened to.

“We can only build truly resilient communities when the most marginalised women and girls are reached and represented.

“Ultimately, climate justice means gender justice. So let’s continue challenging the status quo – at all levels – and help empower more women to become powerful agents of change.”

Dutch footballer with a very NSFW name has become an instant viral star

Footballers names trend quite a lot on Twitter, especially when there is a big game on television.

Names such as Messi, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Rashford and Rapinoe have topped trending charts numerous but we don’t think we’ve ever seen a name like this get so much attention.

Jizz Hornkamp is a 22-year-old Dutch striker who plays for Den Bosch in the Netherlands. He is considered to be an exciting young prospect in Dutch football and its easy to see why. After all, he did score four goals for Den Bosch in their 4-4 draw with Excelsior in the Dutch second division on Saturday.

His incredible goal-scoring feat soon saw him gain widespread attention across the globe. Unfortunately for Hornkamp it wasn’t because he scored all four goals but because of his first name, which in English means something completely different which we can’t type here.

Hornkamp’s first name was soon trending on Twitter and you can imagine the majority of some of the jokes that were on offer.

If you are new to this, then please allow us to introduce you to some other funny footballer names. Danny Invincible, Kevin Lasagna, Bernt Haas, Christian Fuchs, Nortei Nortey, Stefan Kuntz, Creedence Clearwater Couto are a few just to get you started. Yes, they are all real people.

Budgie smugglers are back! Speedo's skimpy swim trunks featured in latest fashion shows

When Britain's blokes eventually get a chance to strut their stuff on the beach again, they'll be wearing skimpy Speedo-style swimming briefs according to fashion insiders

Beaches may remain off-limits when lockdown is lifted – because budgie-smugglers are back.

Blokes are set to strut their stuff on the sand in skimpy Speedo-style swimming briefs after top designers included them in their new ranges.

Aussie swimwear firm Speedo has never stopped knocking out the tiny trunks.

But high-end UK fashion firm Orlebar Brown has added a number of tight trunks to its latest summer collection.

They include the tiny £95 stripy dachshund shorts.

Buyers are told: “For these Dachshund swim briefs we’ve looked to retro stripes.

“This flattering navy and white style comes in Italian knitted fabric with an internal drawcord adorned with nickel-effect ends."

Image

“Retro and refined," the Orlebar Brown description continues, "Dachshund is a classic swim brief to wear in the pool or on the beach.

“In a sporty shape this design offers great shape retention and maximum movement.’’

Flamboyant Italian designer Versace (corr) is also plugging a range of super-tight trunks – all for over £100.

Of the skimpiest pair – which cost £145 - the firm’s website states: “Bold and confident, these swim briefs boast the iconic Barocco print.’’

Another Versace pair - retailing for £190 and featuring two lions on the front - are described as: “Classic swim briefs boasting the Barocco Mosaic print, an elegant patchwork of archive prints that celebrate the brand’s aesthetic heritage.’’

Speedo itself sells a pair of blue trunks for just £18.

Customers are told: “Speedo Essentials – everything you need for a great swim.

“Love your swim wearing the 5cm Trunks from our much-loved Essentials range.

I knew you boys would be pleased

Woman discovers secret NYC apartment hidden behind her bathroom mirror

Image

ROOSEVELT ISLAND, Manhattan (WABC) -- Just about every New York City resident has a story about finding an apartment, but a woman from Roosevelt Island can probably top them all.

Samantha Hartsoe discovered a vacant unit adjacent to the one she was living in.

There was an entrance hidden behind her bathroom mirror.

A mysterious draft is what tipped her off - she felt cold air blowing on her, and the air was coming from the mirror.

Hartsoe made a four-part series on her TikTok about finding the apartment.

It is unclear whether building management knew about the space.
