Passport photo blunder leaves woman accidentally 'resembling Mr Potato Head'
15:43, 16 Jul 2021Updated23:14, 16 Jul 2021*
One woman was left in hysterics after her friend's passport photos came back - and people joked that she looked like a completely different woman due to a technical error

A glitch on a woman's passport photo that left her looking like Mr Potato Head has left people in stitches.

TikTok user Stacey was left in hysterics, after her friend's travel document came back looking rather different, due to an editing error.

She shared a video explaining what happened and it's been viewed more than one million times.

In it, Stacey wrote: "I've been laughing for the past hour. My friend ordered her passport and they did her so dirty."

She then showed the picture they submitted, compared to the photo they ended up using in her passport.

The woman asked: "Why did they do that to her forehead?"

Image

One viewer joked: "She's got a lot on her mind," while another said: "If Mr Potato Head came to life."

Another said: "They did the same to my daughter's," while a third added: "It happens, my son got his messed up too, he had a horse face."

Luckily, a former passport photographer helped explain what had happened to the picture.

She wrote: "The white definitely messed it up because they scan the photo onto a computer and then it uses the proportions to zoom in on the face.

"The white shirt and background must have confused the computer and made it hard to find her shoulders."

Paralysed IndyCar Driver Races Again in Hi-Tech Corvette

The tech used here could have a wider impact on helping people with disabilities

Image
Quadriplegic former IndyCar driver Sam Schmidt, who was paralysed from the neck down in a crash in 2000,
is seen alongside his customised Chevrolet Corvette,
as part of Arrow Electronics' SAM Car Project, in Nashville, US.

Since the age of five, Sam Schmidt's ambition was to be an IndyCar champion. And he achieved it, winning at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1999. A glorious racing career beckoned.

But months later, on January 6, 2000, Schmidt crashed during a practice lap at the Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, severely injuring his spinal cord.

Doctors told him he would likely be on a ventilator for the rest of his life. He was off the ventilator in six weeks, but was diagnosed as a quadriplegic - paralysed from the neck down.

"It was my passion my entire life and then this happens and it kind of turns things upside down," Schmidt told Reuters.

While the prospect of him racing again was gone, Schmidt founded Schmidt Peterson Motorsports in 2001. His team, now known as Arrow McLaren SP, has won 12 IndyCar races.

Still, the urge to race prompted Schmidt to embark on an exciting proposition: building a race car that he could drive despite his disability.

Beginning in 2013 and working with engineers from tech company Arrow Electronics, the result is the SAM Car - SAM standing for "semi-autonomous mobility".

"Arrow came along with this idea of building a car for somebody that can't use their arms and legs. And it was an amazing experience," Schmidt said.

"What I didn't anticipate was this overwhelming feeling of normalcy because I was in control. And literally to that point in my life, there was really not a lot that I controlled. I needed help for everything. So the fact that I'm steering it, I'm using the brake and the gas and going as fast as I want is exhilarating. So it's fantastic." 'Sky's the limit!'

On July 8 the latest version of the SAM Car - a modified a V8 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray - took to the legendary racecourse at Goodwood in southern England, driven by Schmidt himself.

He steers via a racing hat and sunglasses fitted with infrared sensors, which are motion-tracked by infrared cameras mounted on the dashboard to detect his head movements.

Image
The customised Chevrolet Corvette C8 used by Sam Schmidt to drive independently again.

To accelerate and brake Schmidt uses his breath, inhaling and exhaling through a "sip-and-puff" pressure sensor.

While Schmidt has a co-driver alongside him with their hands hovering over the wheel to take control in an emergency, he has managed to navigate a number of race tracks in the United States and, now the Goodwood course as part of its annual Festival of Speed motoring event. Other milestones include going over 200 miles-per-hour, and driving his wife on a date.

Arrow engineers recently built an exoskeleton suit, further giving him an independence once thought lost forever.

"In the last few months I wore (it) my to daughter's wedding. So, by far the best day in 21 years," Schmidt said, adding that there wasn't a dry eye in the house when he danced with his newlywed daughter.

The tech that he and Arrow are pioneering could have a wider impact on helping people with disabilities, he added.

"This technology could be transferred to industrial purposes to get people back to work. You can drive a harvester, you can drive a train, you could drive a forklift or a crane." As for what his future holds, Schmidt is aiming high.

"The sky's the limit... I hear they're selling tickets to the space station, maybe that's it!"

Suspect Fakes Being Unconscious But Wakes Up After Smelling Curry Rice

Image

A suspect who attempted to evade police interrogation was caught out by his love of good food.

The man, from Xiaogan in China's Hubei Province, was arrested on 7 July when he came up with an ingenious plan to avoid questioning.

After being taken in by the cops, he pretended to faint, falling unconscious for three days.

He was then taken to hospital where doctors tried desperately to rouse him from his slumber. But despite their best efforts, nothing seemed to work.

That was, however, until the suspect finally 'woke up' after smelling a particularly delicious plate of beef curry and rice.

It turned out that a police officer had been enjoying a meal by the patient's bedside and the man just couldn't contain his excitement.

Speaking to The Global Times, the officer said: "The rice's smell was very strong and spread all over the room as I was eating it. Then he started moving his head and slowly got up."

After being rumbled, the suspect admitted he just couldn't resist.

He said: "I haven't eaten for three days. My empty stomach couldn't bear it anymore when I smelled food around me."

UK looks to extend ivory ban to hippos and other animals

Hippos, walruses and whales could receive greater legal protection under UK government proposals to crack down on ivory poaching.

Ministers want to extend the Ivory Act because they say elephants are not the only animals at risk.

Conservationists have welcomed the move as sending a "clear signal to the rest of the world".

Boris Johnson has previously announced that funding to tackle the illegal wildlife trade will be increased.

The Ivory Act, which gained Royal Assent in 2018, will introduce a near total ban on the import, export and dealing of items containing elephant ivory in the UK, but it has not yet become law.

Now the environment department says it needs to go further.

Ivory markets

Under the new plans - which open for public consultation on Saturday - it would be broadened to cover other animals facing threats from hunters.

Ministers say hippos are also at risk from poachers, while killer whales and sperm whales are targeted for their teeth and narwhals and walruses for their tusks.

Image

The consultation puts forward three options: retaining the current ban on elephant ivory in the UK only, extending the Act to hippo ivory only, and extending it the five listed species.

International Environment Minister Lord Goldsmith said: "The Ivory Act is one of the toughest bans of its kind in the world and sends a clear message that we are doing all that we can to save elephants from the threat of extinction.

"However the ivory trade is a conservation threat for other magnificent species such as the hippo, narwhal and walrus that are at threat.

"So I urge everyone to share their views to help ensure we can protect more animals from the grim ivory trade."

Dr Mark Jones, head of policy at the Born Free Foundation, said: "Closing down elephant ivory markets is an essential step towards securing a future for elephants.

"However, by focusing only on the trade in elephant ivory, other ivory-bearing species could suffer as ivory traders and consumers turn to alternatives.

"By taking this step, the UK can send a clear signal to the rest of the world that killing animals to carve ornaments from their teeth is not acceptable in the 21st century."

The prime minister has previously announced that funding to tackle the illegal wildlife trade will be increased as part of the £220 million International Biodiversity Fund.

Stranger Takes Home 2 Dogs After Helping Car Accident Victims Get Airlifted to Hospital, Unable to Tend the Pups

Image

The universe offers a myriad of opportunities for random acts of kindness. When such a chance falls in our path, some choose to ignore it and keep on walking, while others rise to the occasion with grace and kindness.

Case in point: When Nova Scotia native Matthew Van De Riet unexpectedly found himself at the scene of an auto wreck on a lonely patch of highway, without hesitation, he stepped in to help.

Van De Riet was first alerted to the situation when he noticed a very distressed-looking dog standing by the side of the road. Kipper, a 10-year-old Basset Hound, and her canine companion Merlin, a 2-year-old shepherd, had been thrown from their owners’ vehicle by the impact of the crash.

After quickly securing the dogs, Van De Riet turned his attentions to the human passengers in the badly damaged vehicle. Though the car was flipped on its roof, both the driver and his girlfriend survived the accident

As Van De Riet tended to them with his first-aid kit, he reached out to another passerby to call for emergency intervention. The medical personnel who arrived soon after determined the female passenger’s injuries, though not life-threatening, warranted her being airlifted to a nearby hospital for care.

Rather than leaving the driver and the dogs stranded, Van De Riet transferred the couple’s belongings and all their dog gear into his truck and drove the young man to the Halifax hospital where his girlfriend was being treated.

But for Van De Riet, the day’s random acts of kindness were far from finished.

With their owners new to the area and having no family close by, Van De Riet was left with the logistical problem of what to do with Kipper and Merlin. Again, without hesitation, he offered to keep the dogs until the couple was able to pick them up.

“I figured the least I could do was take those dogs home with me,” told CBC News. “I knew the pups were shaken up—and I know if somebody was in an accident and their loved one is hurt, the last thing they need to worry about is their dogs.”

Although both pooches appeared to be mostly okay, just to be on the safe side, Van De Riet brought them to a local animal hospital for evaluation. Following a checkup (donated free of charge due to the circumstances), the doggy duo was cleared to go and given pain medication to deal with any lingering effects of the accident.

After the vet visit, Van De Riet brought Merlin and Kipper home and let them get acquainted with his two miniature Doberman housemates. A long day filled with unforeseen events and random acts of kindness was followed by a quiet night of trust, safety, and security—and all thanks to the unsolicited help of a truly humble local hero.

Any arguments to the contrary aside, Van De Riet sees nothing particularly out of the ordinary about his willingness not only to aid a pair of total strangers in distress, but to go the extra mile to ensure their furry friends were safe as well.

“It was the least I could do. I would expect anyone in this province to do the same thing if they were in my shoes,” Van De Riet told CBC. “It just happened to be that I was the one that was there first, I guess. [I’m no] Good Samaritan… It’s just the Nova Scotia way.”

While we can only hope everyone in Nova Scotia shares this unselfish outlook on life, we’d certainly like to send out a sincere thank you to Mr. Van De Riet’s parents for raising such a truly thoughtful and compassionate son.

Tourists flung into 6,300ft canyon after swing's chain snaps - but miraculously survive
Image
The terrifying moment a cliff swing's chain snapped sending two tourists plummeting into a 6,300ft canyon was caught on film.

The young women were riding on the bench-like Extreme Swing, which overlooks the Sulak Canyon in the Dagestan region of Russia, when the accident occurred seemingly flinging them into the abyss.

However, the unnamed pair - who were not wearing safety harnesses - miraculously survived after landing on a small wooden platform just beyond the cliff edge.

During the heart-stopping clip, filmed in June and shared this week, a crack can be heard as one of the two chains from the supporting stands snaps, reports the Daily Star.

Screams ring out as the tourists appear to be hurtling to their deaths.

But after landing on the platform their family and friends managed to drag them to safety, with the two having suffered bruises and scratches.

Sulak is about 206ft deeper than the Grand Canyon in the US and is described as the deepest in Europe.

The Ministry of Tourism in Dagestan was aware of the incident and said the swing "didn't meet official safety standards".

Remember Theodore Tugboat? From that old 90s TV show where anthropomorphic sea vessels partake in adventures and (to quote Google) "explore feelings, fairness and friendship" together?

He's here, at the Toronto Harbourfront, all the way from Halifax. But only for a visit. And he's actually only a (really big) replica of the original toy boat used on said toy boat's eponymous show.

"Theodore TOO" is identical to the smiling red tugboat we saw on CBC television between 1993 and 2001, only much larger, at 65 feet in length. The original is actually quite tiny.

Yeah, I was also surprised to learn that the show was filmed on a set using remote-controlled toy boats. Big Harbour was basically a bathtub.

Image

But Theodore TOO is a real, working boat, capable of travelling all the way from his longtime home in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Hamilton, where he will be recognized even by those who've never seen his show as an iconic piece of Canadiana.

The boat left Halifax for Hamilton with a four-person crew on June 10, but has been stopping off in waterfront communities along the way to promote water conservation initiatives on behalf of Swim Drink Fish.

Image

The tugboat's owner, Blair McKeil, announced when the ship left Halifax that Theodore was collaborating with Swim Drink Fish to "play a larger role in promoting several of the organization's initiatives including its Great Lakes Guide."

McKeil affirmed Theodore TOO's "unwavering commitment to promoting Canada's Maritimes" at the time and revealed that plans are also in the works to have the character "actively advocate for employment in Canada's marine and shipbuilding industry in the face of a critical labour shortage."

Accompanied by a flotilla of welcoming vessels, the tugboat arrived at port this afternoon in front of the Toronto Harbourfront Centre.

He'll stay here until Sunday morning and is scheduled to arrive in Hamilton that same day, at which point he will be converted to biodiesel in line with his new gig as a sustainability champion.

Built at Snyder's Shipyard in Dayspring, Nova Scotia, Theodore TOO officially launched in April of 2000. The character is still described as "a proud ambassador to the East Coast," even though he'll now live in the Port of Hamilton.

So, if you do miss your chance to take giant rubber duck-style selfies with Theodore this weekend, you could always drive to The Hammer sometime when he's out and about seeing fans.

Innate Talent Seems to Be Just as Much a Gift Found in Some Dogs as it is in People, Study Says

Image

Whether it’s seeing a kid need only a few seconds to learn Mary had a Little Lamb on the piano, experiencing getting wiped out by a much better player in a pickup basketball game, or witnessing someone’s encyclopedic memory while they rattle off statistics about geography, humans exhibit natural talents every day.

Now, a study seeking the origin of “natural talent” in dogs has been published in Nature. It found that just as in humans, some particular pooches display more innate talent than others.

This story has a lot to do with border collies, a dog species which the authors of the study note was bred for herding sheep and therefore had to be extra-cognizant of their owners’ calls, instructions, and whistles.

The American Kennel Club reported last year on a border collie named Chaser, who had 1,022 toys and knew the individual names of every one, while Science reported on one named Rico who knew the names of 200 toys and could very quickly retrieve those for which he had no name by using exclusion learning and inference at about the level of a 3-year-old human.

Locating 34 dog owners across the globe using social media, Claudia Fugazza of Eötvös Loránd University wanted to see if they could attach specific names to all the toys they played with, and be able to recognize and respond to those names immediately.

Of those 34 dogs, only one border collie succeeded, a young female named Olivia, who couldn’t entirely complete the trial due to health complications.

“[W]e decided to set up a study in which both puppies and adult naïve dogs are systematically and intensively trained for learning at least two object names over a 3-month period, and we used a strictly controlled testing method to assess the dogs’ learning outcome every month from the start of the training,” wrote Fugazza in her paper.

Every month a scientist would visit the dog’s house and test to see if they could retrieve an object based on the names they’d been practicing. If they succeeded, another name would be added.

Perhaps the surprising thing is that of the 34 dogs, 19 were border collies, and 18 of them failed to learn a single name.

The hypothesis was that some dogs with certain neurological plasticity owing to either early-life training or breed-activity would have better abilities.

However, the dogs learned the names of toys “irrespectively of the age of the subjects and despite intensive training,” the researchers wrote, concluding by saying that “while a few rare individuals can rapidly master multiple object names, we suggest that the capacity to learn object-names in dogs shows analogies with exceptional performance (talent) in humans.”

It seems that it’s just as hard to find out why Mozart was Mozart as it is to find out why Chaser the border collie was Chaser the border collie.

Sisterhood of the traveling exes! Three women who discovered they were all dating the SAME man move into an old school bus together after they all ditched their cheating ex and are now driving across the US in the home on wheels

BOISE, Idaho -- Three women turned lemons into lemonade recently after finding out they were dating the same man.

Seven months ago, Abi Roberts, Bekah King and Morgan Tabor learned that the man they were dating wasn't just three-timing them, but six-timing them -- dating six different women all at the same time.

Tabor said she dated him in 2018 for nearly a year. During that time, King met him and started dating him in the summer of 2020. Roberts said she met him in 2020, during Halloween.

In December of 2020, Tabor said she had an inkling that something wasn't right in her relationship. And after some sleuthing on social media, Tabor connected with Abby and eventually all the other women dating her then-boyfriend.

Instead of getting mad at each other, Roberts, King and Tabor dumped the guy and joined forces, like Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton in the film "The Other Woman." And instead of getting back at the man by taking him down, they decided to band together and travel across the country, which they're doing by way of a 30-year-old school bus that they renovated.

"We started in Boise, Idaho, where the whole build-out took place, and then we traveled east through Idaho," Roberts told "Good Morning America." "We went to some really cool hot springs through Ketchum, which is a beautiful area there. And then we went through the Grand Tetons, which was so much fun. And then we went through Jackson, through Yellowstone. We were just in Bozeman, Montana, and now we're back near Yellowstone."

"We're winging it a little bit," added Tabor. "Like we have a rough draft route, but we're open to not following it. Kind of just opportunities and people we meet, we'll go from there."

They're documenting all of their journey on their Instagram and TikTok page, @the.bam.bus and creating a bond stronger than any man can break.

Now, they're using their story in hopes of helping others who find themselves in similar situations.

"Something we love to share with everyone, and especially girls who are maybe in a similar situation or going through something, is just to keep your head up. Keep going, you got this!" said Tabor.

Roberts added, "Surround yourself with people that lift you up and don't tear you down, because I think that's what happened with all of us like in our different relationships with the same guy. I think there is a lot of tearing down and it sucks."

"GMA" reached out to the former alleged boyfriend and he provided no comment.

Mac & Cheese Is The Ice Cream You Never Thought You'd Need And Now It's Hard To Get

Image
Limited-edition macaroni and cheese ice cream is now available while supplies last.
The Kraft Heinz Co.

Mac and cheese. It's cheesy, it's creamy, it's warm and buttery. Oh, one more thing — now it's an ice cream flavor. And many people are asking: Why?

"We are living in the last days," comedian Josh Pray said on YouTube. "Is this a terrible idea? Absolutely. Should this have been made? Gosh no. This come from the mind of a first-grader."

The limited-edition flavor, created in celebration of National Mac and Cheese Day by Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, hit stores Wednesday.

It's received its fair share of public outcry on social media, but the cold and cheesy treat is still sold out nearly everywhere. The companies "wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with," said Emily Violett, senior associate brand manager for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, in a news release.

The ice cream is gluten-free and carries with it Kraft Mac & Cheese's iconic yellow-orange color. Van Leeuwen sells it for $12 a pint alongside its other flavors, which include Earl Grey Tea ice cream and a variety of other vegan options. At least it did — before its site crashed because of the number of people trying to buy it.

Image

"It is definitely cheesy," said Eater writer Amy McCarthy on NPR's Morning Edition. "It's a little funky, a little salty, a little sweet. But altogether I'd just say it just kind of comes together. It's very creamy and buttery and it's a lot better than you think it's gonna be."

Image

But despite numerous good reviews, much of the internet is not as keen to try the unique flavor.

Carnegie Melon professor develops real-time learning four-legged robot

Image

Meet the new four-legged robot that's almost human, but not quite.

The artificial intelligence robot developed by Carnegie Melon University Professor Deepak Pathak can adapt in real-time and teach itself how to maneuver through rocks, sand, grass and oil-covered surfaces.

Looking something like the bare bones of a small animal, the robot learns to react to new situations the same way people do.

Most robots aren't able to adjust to changing conditions so quickly, but Rapid Motor Adaptation seeks to change that. The technology is the first learning-based system that doesn't rely on hand-coded motions.

The RMA adapts robot joints in real-life to auto-adjust to changing situations. It is a step toward building AI systems that can do the same.

The research team says the robot will eventually be used for search and rescue efforts, and space exploration.

Man doing maths on a flight is questioned by security for ‘scribbling a foreign language’
00:01, 17 Jul 2021Updated08:10, 17 Jul 2021*

A woman sat on a plane next to the Ivy League economist had expressed her concerns to security over the equations

Image
Italian Guido Menzio was just preparing for a talk at Queen's University

The unfortunate story of a maths whizz and a nosy airplane passenger has resurfaced across social media.

Back in 2016, Italian-born University of Pennsylvania economics professor, Guido Menzio, found himself in a sticky situation before taking off on an American Airlines flight from Philadelphia to Syracuse.

Granted, solving a tricky maths equation isn’t everyone's cup of tea when they’re on a long flight but this was Menzio’s entertainment of choice, so fair play to him.

He had been sitting next to a woman on the plane who at first said she felt unwell, so had to be escorted off the plane, when in fact, she just wanted to raise concerns about Guido’s scribbles on a piece of paper (which turned out to just be a maths equation.)

American Airlines spokesperson Casey Norton told Buzzfeed Newsthat at one point, Menzio even expressed concern to see if the woman was okay - little did he know.

It was at this point that an awkward conversation took place between the captain and Menzio to confirm that the scribblings of a ‘foreign language’ were just, well...maths.

Speaking to The Washington Post, he said that the pilot ‘seemed embarrassed’ when he learnt that the nosy neighbour's doubts were nothing but paranoia, and that he was just preparing for a talk at Queen’s University on a working paper about menu costs and price dispersion.

Image
The American Airlines captain was embarrassed when he learnt the truth

The flight eventually took off after a two hour hold up and the woman, who he declined to name, decided to take a separate flight that evening.

At least some reddit users saw the jovial side of this rather awkward situation, with one joking "weapons of math destruction", while another said "it’s Al-gebra, not Al-Qaeda".
