Giant planet discovered orbiting dead star may be a glimpse into our solar system's future

Image

Astronomers have discovered a giant planet orbiting a dead star, which they say could resemble our solar system when the Sun dies out in approximately 5 billion years.

Scientists discovered a Jupiter-like planet, which has a similar orbit as the Gas Giant, revolving around a dead star — or white dwarf — near the center of the Milky Way, according to a news release. The team also found the planet is 40 times more massive than Jupiter and the white dwarf is about 60% of the Sun's mass.

Researchers found the system using the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii and wrote about their findings in a new study published in the journal Nature this week.

There's reason to be optimistic about the fate of some planets in our solar system in spite of the sun's ticking time clock, said Joshua Blackman, a researcher at the University of Tasmania in Australia and lead author of the study.

"This evidence confirms that planets orbiting at a large enough distance can continue to exist after their star's death," said Blackman. "Given that this system is an analog to our own solar system, it suggests that Jupiter and Saturn might survive the Sun's red giant phase, when it runs out of nuclear fuel and self-destructs."

Earth's future, however, "may not be so rosy" because of its proximity to the Sun, said co-author David Bennett, a senior research scientist at the University of Maryland and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

"If humankind wanted to move to a moon of Jupiter or Saturn before the Sun fried the Earth during its red supergiant phase, we'd still remain in orbit around the Sun, although we would not be able to rely on heat from the Sun as a white dwarf for very long," he said.

When looking at the planet's host star, Jean-Philippe Beaulieu, another co-author of the study, said they ruled out a neuron star and black hole host, and instead concluded the planet was orbiting a dead star. The team discovered its starlight wasn't bright enough to be an ordinary star.

"It offers a glimpse into what our solar system will look like after the disappearance of the Earth, whipped out in the cataclysmic demise of our Sun," said Beaulieu, who is a chair of astrophysics at the University of Tasmania and director at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris.

The research team will include its findings in a statistical study to find how many other white dwarfs have planetary survivors. NASA's upcoming mission, the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope, which helps directly image giant planets, will aid in their investigation.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been tearing it up in the preseason, and the start of the NHL season this evening has fans excited for another crack at greatness (but probably just more disappointment).

It's been a busy few weeks for players, but Leafs' goaltender Jack Campbell has still been able to make time for what's really important, like hosting a cute birthday celebration for a four-legged friend.

Image

This lovely little grey tabby named Buds was treated to a lavish party complete with decorations, a cake catering to kitty tastes, and of course, a party hat.

It looks like Buds wasn't ready to celebrate a hat-trick (sorry) with the colourful party outfit. By the second photo in the trio posted to Instagram, Buds seems a bit purrturbed (sorry, but also not at all sorry), and by the third photo, the party hat is just gone.

At least they got a couple for the 'gram before the cat remembered, "wait, I'm a cat."

Based on his Instagram history, it looks like Campbell adopted Buds shortly before the Leafs picked him up in early 2020. The two posed together in January 2020, Buds still a tiny kitten and Campbell still rocking L.A. Kings gear.

Oh, how they've both changed in such a short time.

What gets me is he named his cats Buds before he became a Leaf player and that is the Leafs nickname...Buds.

Firefighter Adopts Kitten He Saved After Developing 'Very Special Bond' During the Cat's Rescue

Brandon Mulvaney knew he wanted to adopt Huntley the kitten after pulling the small stray cat out of an underground pipe in Saginaw, Michigan, this August

Image

Firefighter Brandon Mulvaney's family just got a bit bigger and furrier.

In August, Mulvaney — a firefighter with Michigan's Saginaw Fire Department — received an alert at 1 a.m. about an animal trapped in a storm drain. Mulvaney and several others were dispatched to respond to the call and found a tiny kitten trapped below ground.

After conferring with the other members of his crew and Saginaw County Animal Care & Control (SCACC) — which had officers on the scene to assist with the rescue — Mulvaney descended seven feet down a maintenance hole to reach the pipe with the kitten.

"I crawled on my hands and knees into a smaller pipe approximately ten more feet to find the smaller pipe that the kitten was in. After a few minutes of waiting and calling for the cat, he peeked out of the pipe, and I grabbed him and carried him out. At that moment, I knew I wanted the kitten because he came right to me," Mulvaney tells PEOPLE of the rescue.

Image

After bringing the little cat back up to the surface, the firefighter wrapped the kitten in a towel, took a quick picture to celebrate the successful rescue, and handed the animal over to a SCACC officer.

Mulvaney knew that couldn't be the last time he saw the kitten, so he kept in touch with SCACC to get updates on the feline's recovery.

"I heard back about his current state of health and approximate age, which was a few weeks old at this point, so he was a baby. During this phone call is when I decided to adopt him because he deserved a better life than being a feral cat," the firefighter said of learning the kitten he rescued was a stray, adding that he couldn't ignore the "very special bond" he had with the pet.

"I called once a week for about two and a half months until I got the approval for adoption," Mulvaney added.

Mulvaney and his family made the kitten's place in their family official in October. The firefighter, his wife, and their kids went to Saginaw County Animal Care & Control to adopt the cat. They decided to name him Huntley after one of the roads at the intersection where Mulvaney first met the feline.

The adoption was supported by BISSELL Pet Foundation and their national "Empty the Shelters" campaign, which funds the cost of pet adoption fees. Huntley is one of over 61,000 pets that have found a home thanks to the event.

Huntley is adjusting well to his new life. The "spitfire" fits right in with the Mulvaneys' four small children and dog and has already earned a "love bug" reputation.

New Belgium creates "Torched Earth" beer that tastes like climate change: "Like eating a Band-Aid"

October 16, 2021 / 12:54 PM / CBS News

The New Belgium brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, is famous for its Fat Tire ale and sizable supply of suds. But recently, CEO Steve Fechheimer decided to craft a new beer, created to highlight how climate change threatens breweries.

"It's not usually good business to make a bad product," Fechheimer told CBS News senior national and environmental correspondent Ben Tracy.

His brewmaster, Dave Glor, said he was confused when he was asked to make the beer because he's "not usually asked to make bad-tasting beers."

The beer is called "Torched Earth," and Fechheimer said the drink "tastes like eating a Band-Aid." New Belgium doesn't really want consumers to buy the drink, but wants people to learn something from it.

Tracy asked: "What is the future of beer if we don't really address climate change?"

"I think beer is not gonna not only become very expensive but is not going to be the same quality of beer that people get to enjoy today," Fechheimer said.

"And so, when we say 'expensive,' what's a future six-pack if climate change runs rampant?" Tracy asked.

"We've talked about a six-pack of Fat Tire costing $100," Fechheimer replied.

The three main ingredients in beer are clean water, barley and hops. All of those ingredients are threatened by climate change. Weather extremes such as drought and flooding are ravaging crops across the country.

The main source of New Belgium's water is the Poudre River. Historic wildfires fueled by climate change have burned the forests in the canyon and polluted the river with ashen runoff — making the water supply at times unusable.

"We view climate change as an existential threat to New Belgium," Fechheimer said.

"Torched Earth" is a wake-up call for consumers. Instead of clean water, it is brewed with the smoke-tainted version. High-quality hops are replaced with climate-resilient dandelion root, and barley gets swapped for buckwheat.

"It's a window into how terrible things are at a somewhat selfish level ... that might be the least of our worries," said Fechheimer.

New Belgium is aware that beer pales in comparison to the deadly impacts of climate change already impacting the planet. The brewery is trying to do its part by powering much of its operation with solar panels.

Katie Wallace, New Belgium's director of environmental impact, said "Torched Earth" is meant to start a conversation.

"If climate change is our client, then yes it's a PR stunt for climate change and the goal of that is to raise awareness for climate action," Wallace said.

Glor said "Torched Earth" is not meant to be putrid, but simply probable.

"It was an exercise in exploring the way we might have to make beer, not how we want to make beer," said Glor.

'Testicle bath' birth control device earns Germany's Dyson Prize

Image

Oct. 15
(UPI) -- A German inventor's unique ultrasound "testicle bath" birth control device for men took the top prize at the country's James Dyson Awards.

Rebecca Weiss, an industrial design graduate from the University of Munich and inventor of the COSO male birth control device, was named Germany's winner of the James Dyson Award, which "celebrates, encourages and inspires the designers of new problem-solving ideas."

The COSO uses an ultrasound "testicle bath" to temporary stop sperm mobility. The device only needs to be used every few months to keep the sperm inert and prevent eggs from being fertilized during sex.

Weiss said the inspiration for the device came after she was diagnosed with precursor cervical cancer, which has been tied to oral contraceptive pills.

"When my partner and I were looking for an alternative method, we became aware of the lack of male contraceptives," Weiss told Dyson Award officials.

"This problem is not unique to me personally. It affects many others as well as is made evident in the current growing public discussion about the lack of contraceptive alternatives."

Weiss said the lack of male birth control options led her to develop "a new contraceptive approach for men in my master's thesis."

The inventor said she is hoping the Dyson Award will help her obtain funding to put the COSO through clinical trials.

As Germany's winner of the Dyson Award, Weiss is now shortlisted for the international award, which carries a $45,000 prize.

Aunt Who Bought Nephew Winning Lottery Ticket Demands He Gives Her The Money

Image

A woman who bought her nephew a winning lottery ticket has sparked a debate online after demanding that he gives her a large portion of the money.

The aunt took to Reddit's Am I The A**hole forum to discuss her predicament, saying her nephew had won a 'life-changing' amount of money.

Explaining the situation to other users, she explained that she'd had a 'really rough year' after being laid off from her job.

The woman wrote: "I do own my house and managed to scrape buy to pay my property taxes and insurance with odd jobs but I am eating ramen just about every meal.

"I love my nephew and can't get by on the thought that I wouldn't be able to get him a birthday present (Nov 3rd).

"I scraped together whatever change I could and bought him some lottery scratchers. and holy s*** he actually won (on two of them no less).

Image

"One was for about $50 [£36] which was cool enough but the second one was actually into the middle 5 figures.

"I mean life-changing money (I can't say exactly how much because in our state lottery winners are all public record)."

She continued: "His parents (my sister and her husband) are very well off.

"My nephew has a fully funded college fund and every material thing he could ever want.

"When I found out I told my sister that it would be really cool if my nephew gave me at least 3/4 of the winnings.

"She asked if I was serious. I said I felt I was being very generous because I really need all of it.

"She actually hung up on me. I texted my nephew and I think he actually blocked me.

"Here's the thing, I NEED this money. It's a matter of me eating or not eating.

"He doesn't. Am I the a****** for thinking he should share the winnings of the gift I gave him?"

Commenting on the post, which was shared on Reddit last year, many people didn't find themselves sympathising with the woman.

Image

Telling her YTA 'You're The A**hole', one person said: "It was a gift. You don't get to ask for part of someone's gift. It sucks you're having it tough but still doesn't mean you're "generous" for asking for only part of the gift. Sure ask them for help, but don't ask for his gift."

Another agreed: "If he hadn't won you'd have been out the same amount of money. You were gifting him the chance to win more and guess what? He did. If he decides to give you some that's an awesome, heartwarming gesture - which you've totally ruined the chances of by demanding 3/4s. Just try and be happy for him. And reach out to local agencies for help."

A third added: "3/4s??? You're crazy. YTA. It was a gift. While it would be nice for your nephew to share some of the winnings, calling up his mother and demanding 3/4s of the winnings is completely out of line."

Fourth said sarcastically: "Here's a gift; it's probably worthless but if by some miracle it turns out to be worth something I want it back. It's only for you if it's actually worthless. Great gift, OP. And not how gifts work, you only get to add that kind of conditions in advance. YTA."

While the general consensus of people believed she was in the wrong, one person piped up with a little more empathy.

"I completely understand where you're coming from, you're frustrated that you pulled together this money and someone much more well off managed to win a load of money on the cards you bought," they told the woman.

"I would apologize to them, though. Explain it was s***** for you to insist you deserve it for buying the cards because they were a gift. But I would also explain you weren't trying to be selfish and went about it wrong, that it would mean a lot if he would share some of the winnings because you're really struggling right now and it would change a lot of your life for the better."

Special Needs Puppy Winnie Becomes BFFs With Piglet Wilma and Our Hearts Explode Just Looking at Them

Winnie might just be the best friend to everyone at Charlotte's Freedom Farm. Whether you're one of the 200 animals who live there or a weekend visitor, you're likely to encounter the small puppy with big wheels and an even bigger smile.

The ever-happy Winnie—proper name Winston—arrived at the farm in Ontario, Canada, over the summer. His owner, Charlotte's Freedom Farm founder Lauren Edwards, tells Daily Paws he didn't develop properly in the womb, resulting in underdeveloped front legs and an unformed sternum that doesn't connect to his ribs. So he needs help getting around, but he's adapted and plays just like any other puppy, especially with his piglet buddy Wilma.

"He's my whole world right now," Edwards says. "I love this little guy."

Image

She found out about Winnie from *deep breath* another person in the animal sanctuary sphere, who'd spoken to a pet wheelchair designer, who'd heard about Winnie from his original owner. His siblings were all doing fine, but he was struggling to stay healthy, so Edwards decided to take him in when he was only 4 weeks old.

Soon, he became more energetic, as much as any other puppy, and his smaller, curled front legs didn't keep him from moving around. The issue was still his chest, where he has a hernia along with the undeveloped sternum that doesn't connect to his ribs. Without the protection a normal anatomy provides, an accidental step or kick to his chest could be devastating.

When Edwards found out, she sequestered Winnie from his new friends. Thankfully, it wasn't a total bummer for the pup. While awaiting a chest protector last month, he got to meet Wilma. Being so young, she would come inside at night, and she was small enough that Edwards didn't have to worry about her accidentally hurting Winnie. They started play-wrestling about two minutes after they met.

"Well that's the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life," Edwards remembers thinking.

Wilma, who's grown quite a bit, now lives outside full time, but the two buddies still see each other plenty. They run over to each other and still wrestle and roll around, Winnie seemingly passing along some dog-like habits to the piglet, Edwards says.

But she's not his only friend—because Winnie loves everyone. His dog siblings. His cat siblings. The 100 or so people who toured the farm this past weekend? Friends!

"He loves everyone," Edwards says.

He's more mobile now with his wheelchairs and chest protector. His wheels are in the front while his sister Bambi, who lost her back legs, pulls her wheelchair. Caring for a special-needs dog isn't cheap, but thankfully the WeRateDogs social media accounts used their considerable megaphones to raise more than $19,000 for Winnie's care. That will come in handy if Winnie needs surgery on his chest, which Edwards says is likely as he gets older.

But for now, he's doing great, even perfecting a system on how to get on and off the couch (basically approaching the edge of the couch and asking Edwards to hoist him up or down). There will undoubtedly be more challenges as he grows, but he and Edwards are ready for them. He's not suffering. In fact, to Edwards, he's glowing.

"It's joy and happiness all day, every day," she says.

Greeks may have helped build China’s famous Terracotta Army

Image

Greeks may have helped with the most famous Chinese sculptures ever made – the 8,000 warriors of the Terracotta Army- who guard the mausoleum of the First Emperor and are likely to have been made under the direction of a European sculptor who worked with locals at the site and took influence from Ancient Greece.

Archaeologists and historians working on the warriors say they now believe the figures’ strong lifelike appearance could have been influenced by the arrival in China of ancient Greek sculptures, and are beginning to believe that Greek sculptors made their way to the Asian region to teach their designs.

The discoveries have made worldwide headlines over the last few days and some are claiming this finding as “more important than anything in the last 40 years,” even more so than the discovery of the Terracotta Army itself in comparison- as they are believed to be the first documented contact between Western and Chinese civilisations ever recorded.

These findings were discovered during excavations across the site by Mausoleum archaeologists and have now been documented by the National Geographic Channel and BBC.

Key findings include evidence that treasures in the tomb of the First Emperor were created with the help of the West, with inspiration from the statues of Ancient Greece.

“We now have evidence that close contact existed between the first emperor’s China and the west before the formal opening of the Silk Road. This is far earlier than we formerly thought,” says Dr Li Xiuzhen, Senior Archaeologist at the Emperor Qin Shihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum.

“We now think the Terracotta Army, the acrobats and the bronze sculptures found on site, have been inspired by ancient Greek sculptures and art.”

Lukas Nickel, chair of Asian art history at Vienna University, and one of the teams working on the history of the figures said: “I imagine that a Greek sculptor may have been at the site to train the locals.”

The new discoveries will be outlined in a documentary, The Greatest Tomb on Earth, jointly made by the BBC and National Geographic, which will be shown on BBC Two on Sunday, 16 October and hosted by Dan Snow, Dr Alice Roberts and Dr Albert Lin.

People Baffled After Discovering Weird 'Blacked Out' Island On Google Maps

Image

A load of people online have been absolutely baffled after spotting a strange island on Google Maps that appears to have been completely blacked out.

Honestly, there's no wonder that some people have suggested that they might have finally found the island from Lost.

Of course, if you've actually seen Lost, you'll have an idea of why that isn't possible, and if you haven't, it came out more than a decade ago, so you can go back and find out for yourself at this point.

Anyway, first thing first, it's not an island. It appears to be an atoll.

We don't actually know where it is, and Google Maps - as you probably know - is pretty extensive.

One thing that we can be certain of is that it looks really strange.

The outside of the island - we'll just stick with island for now - seems to show the lighter sea, and even some waves crashing against what are presumably lovely beaches around the outside.

However, the centre of the island is completely blacked out, and we know for a fact that Google Maps do sometimes black places out that they don't have access to, or people don't want them to know what's going on there, or just don't like being on Google Maps.

Which - by the way - is fair enough. Not everyone wants where they live to be so readily available.

Also, there's just a chance that it's a quirk of the way that the programme is made. It could be that they just didn't remember to put the middle into it.

We may well never know.

Still, that hasn't stopped the good folks of the internet speculating about it.

One person wrote: "God dropped his guitar pick."

Right, so we can probably rule that theory out.

Another said: "My first thought was that it's censored. It wouldn't make sense for a natural formation to be black like that in such a shallow, small atoll/island."

Hmm, but why would that be the case?

A third - as we teased earlier - said: "Ladies and gentlemen, they have found the Island in Lost."

However, one Reddit user might have found the - admittedly dull - solution to the problem.

They said: "OK so the real answer is the blue colour around the island is a painted-in color so the oceans look uniform in the maps.

"Islands are added by erasing some of that blue to let the satellite image show through.

"Sometimes they do a sloppy job. So what you are seeing moving inward is: artificial ocean colour, real ocean with waves, beach, island.

"As for the shape, idk man islands come in all shapes and sizes I don't discriminate".

Well, whatever it is, it looks pretty cool. Let's assume it's some sort of hybrid Lost island/Area 51/pit of despair sort of set-up.

TheAmerican Women Quarters Program is a four-year program, and until 2025, the program will introduce women on the tails of each coin. The initiative was authorized by Congress earlier this year.

Each coin will have a unique design. Angelou’s quarter depicts her with her arms uplifted against the wings of a bird in flight and rays of light. The description, according to U.S Mint, states, “The reverse (tails) depicts Maya Angelou with her arms uplifted. Behind her are a bird in flight and a rising sun, images inspired by her poetry and symbolic of the way she lived.”

All the coin designs and descriptions can be seen here, and below:

Twitter user leaves people baffled after a photo of a trio of threatening snakes is revealed to be nothing more than a harmless moth using a disguise

A photo appearing to be three angry looking snakes has left people baffled as it is revealed to be nothing more than a gentle insect.

Twitter user Rob Allam, who goes by the name @thegallowboob, shared three images of the 'snakes' in order to reveal all is not as it seems.

It turns out the trio of 'snakes' is actually nothing more than a single moth.

The Attacus Atlas, also known as Atlas Moth, is one of the largest known lepidoptera, the insect species that includes butterflies and moths.

Along with the photos, Rob tweeted: "Attacus Atlas is one of the largest butterflies in the world and lives only for two weeks with one goal in their adult stage – lay eggs and defend them until they hatch while disguised as a snake."

Despite the revelation, most users could still not believe their eyes and even questioned if there must be at least one snake in the picture.

One user said: "Without zooming in and reading, I thought this was a 'look, I saved this butterfly from the snake attack' kind of photos. That disguise is really good."

While another said: "How's that top one not an actual snake? This moth would live longer if it didn't look like I wanted to beat it with a broom."

Most others commented of their shock after taking a couple of glances while praising how good the disguise is.

Although mostly found in Asia, a sighting of a giant Atlas moth was reported in the UK in 2012.

Naked sunbather chases wild boar through park after it steals his laptop bag
Image
A naked sunbather was seen chasing wild boar through a park after it stole his laptop bag.
Amusing photographs from Germany show the man running after the animal to try and claim the plastic bag back.
But the cheeky boar and its two piglets appear to be too quick for the sunbather, who can't keep up with their speedy little trotters.
As the incident unfolds, groups of friends and family sat on the grass watch on and laugh.
Heads are seen turning in surprise and amusement in the hilarious photographs.
The incident happened at Teufelssee Lake - a bathing spot in the Grunwell Forest in Berlin, Germany.

Camilla gave birth to her two children at the same bus stop

It is not only the bus that arrives at Dalskog bus stop. Two of Camilla's children have also made their entrance into the world there.

"What are the odds of it happening twice? It will be a fun memory", says Camilla.

The bus stop where Camilla gave birth to two children.

When Camilla Molander was pregnant with her and her husband Johan's second child, Clara, they never made it to the hospital, which is about an hour and a half from their home in Ed, outside Mellerud. Instead, they had to call for an ambulance when they were on their way in and at the bus stop Dalskog, their daughter was born.

"It went so fast, but I was so happy that everything went well. I was surprised, but I did not feel bad afterwards".

This year, four years later, history would repeat itself when Camilla was expecting her third child Oscar. It was on October 2 that Camilla went into early labor. This time, however, they were prepared for it to go fast.

"A midwife had told us to be ready to go in. Already after a quarter of an hour we got in the car."

But the Näls Maternity Clinic said that Camilla and Johan would not make it in, so once again they had to call for an ambulance.

"They came and picked us up at our house, I thought "not again".

On the way to the hospital, another ambulance met them to act as back-up. But even this time they did not make it. The ambulance was forced to stop again so Camilla could deliver her baby, at the exact same bus stop. And not only that. In the ambulance that met them was the same ambulance nurse who had been with when Clara was born.

It was funny that it was the same person who was with during the birth this time as well. She was a great support.

The birth was quick, Camilla did not have time to worry, and everything went well.

"But I did not understand that we were in the same place until afterwards when Johan said that. It only took an hour from when the pains started so we would not have had time to get to the maternity hospital regardless.

Now Oscar is home with his siblings Carl and Clara, the whole family is fine. And of course Camilla thinks that the whole event is a bit strange.

Yes, what are the odds that it would happen twice? It will be a fun memory.

Ralph Lauren Gives its Competitors New Way to Dye Cotton That Uses 90% Fewer Chemicals, 40% Less Energy and Half the Water

Every year, trillions of liters of water are used for fabric dyeing alone, generating around 20% of the world’s wastewater. Untreated, it is incredibly polluting, so requires rigorous, lengthy, and costly treatment to make the water reusable.

Image

Recently Ralph Lauren brought together four leading innovators, including Dow, to develop a way to significantly reduce the amount of water, chemicals, and energy needed to color cotton, by enabling up to 90% fewer processing chemicals, 50% less water, 50% less dye and 40% less energy without sacrificing color or quality.

The Color on Demand system uses a set of technologies that will enable the recycling and reuse of all the water from the dyeing process, to establish the “world’s first scalable zero wastewater” cotton dyeing system.

In addition to significant water savings, Color on Demand dramatically reduces the amount of chemicals, dyes, time, and energy used in the cotton dyeing process. Most importantly, the system utilizes the current dyeing equipment already in factories.

“If we want to protect our planet for the next generation, we have to create scalable solutions that have never been considered before. This requires deep and sometimes unexpected collaboration and a willingness to break down the barriers of exclusivity,” said Halide Alagöz, Chief Product & Sustainability Officer at Ralph Lauren.

According to a company statement, “To implement its groundbreaking approach, Ralph Lauren brought together four innovators in their respective fields, including Dow, a leader in materials science; Jeanologia, a leader in sustainable solutions for garment and fabric finishing, with high expertise in garment dyeing and close loop water treatment systems; Huntsman Textile Effects, a global chemicals company specializing in textile dyes and chemicals; and Corob, a global technology leader in dispensing and mixing solutions, to reimagine each stage of the coloring process and join this shared mission to create a more sustainable and efficient system for cotton dyeing.”

As part of the first phase of Color on Demand, Ralph Lauren has optimized the use of ECOFAST Pure Sustainable Textile Treatment, which is a pre-treatment solution.

And, they worked with World Wildlife Fund to accelerate change of the fashion industry’s outdated practices, and at a scale that matters.

An Open Source manual for change

This month, the companies have jointly released a detailed open-source manual to create an even more meaningful positive environmental impact.

The co-developed, step-by-step manual details how to use ECOFAST Pure, a cationic cotton treatment developed by Dow, that utilizes already existing dyeing equipment.

“We are proud to share it openly with our industry, with the hope that it will help transform how we preserve and use water in our global supply chains,” said Alagöz.

Ralph Lauren began integrating Color on Demand into its supply chain earlier this year and first launched products utilizing ECOFAST Pure as part of the Company’s Team USA collection for the 2020 Olympic & Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

“As fashion supply chains look to recover from impacts of the pandemic, there is a critical window to build more sustainable practices into production processes,” said Mary Draves, Chief Sustainability Officer at Dow. “By collaborating today to scale a less resource intensive dyeing process, we can help address pressing challenges, like climate change and water resiliency, in the long-term.”
