Man Is Creating Blockbuster Video Store Inside Own Home With Massive VHS Collection

Image

A man with a habit for buying VHS now has so many tapes that he's running out of space in his house, which is like his very own private Blockbuster video.

The collector - mysteriously known only as 'The Mayor' - has managed to lay his hands on more than 10,000 tapes, including a number of extremely rare ones, and ones from the very beginning of the VHS era.

In fact, some of them are so old and rare that they're 'pre-cert', meaning that they actually pre-date the mandatory certification of videos.

Image

The Mayor's particularly impressive collection - which includes an old Blockbuster sign he acquired from the old store on Edge Lane in Fairfield, Liverpool - has now been photographed by fellow VHS enthusiast John Lunt.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "When I first saw it, I was shocked.

"It's mind blowing. It's not just the collection, but the way it's presented to make it look like a real video store."

The Mayor himself, who is a resident of Liverpool, now wants to turn the impressive collection into a museum to film, as well as somewhere he can host events and screenings.

Image

He said: "These things are collector's items. I had 10,000 in 2017, but I'm always getting job lots in - including another 2,000 this month alone.

"I'm always building it and building it. It's a full time occupation and I travel all over the country to get video collections."

The biggest haul, as well as the character of his museum, came from Imran Video in Walsall.

When they closed, he managed to get nearly everything from there, not just videos, but also racks and other stock.

However, he's also turned up some gold from stranger places.

Image

He explained: "I've also found some in a skip in Watford. There will always be a gem in there, a catalogue filler.

"I first started collecting in 1993 when I went to a car boot sale. I wanted to own my video shop one day but then DVDs came out and ruined that idea.

"I always buy ex-rental tapes because they were built to last longer on high-grade tape and the quality doesn't degrade, unlike sell-thru retail videos. They only last around 10 plays and the quality in picture and sound would degrade, and they aren't worth anything.

"They are arranged by date in catalogue order number. Even though there are so many, I can find any title pretty much instantly."

Image

He went on: "The collection as a whole is irreplaceable, and must be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

"I'm so glad that I never replaced my collection with DVDs because they're worth nothing these days and yet again another format came out to replace DVD anyway.

"Everybody had VHS back in the day and it's made a huge comeback. My collection has grown massively in recent years, through buying various job lots on eBay and other sources.

"I have no idea how many I actually own as it would be very hard to count, but there are absolutely thousands here and it must be one of the biggest in the country.

"But now I'm running out of room. I need to get my museum off the ground.

"Ideally the old Wavertree cinema would be a perfect location as it's a film related venue and nobody seems to know what to do with it."

Image

He's certainly committed, and plans to continue respecting his collection by only selling videos he has more than one copy of.

The Mayor concluded: "If you're thinking of collecting tapes then be sure to only buy ex-rental as the retail tapes will near enough be unwatchable over time.

"If you have a collection of tapes make sure they're not stored in a damp place as they can become mouldy, so avoid the garage or garden shed."

Grateful Dead T-shirt auctioned for a record-breaking $17,640

A Grateful Dead T-shirt from the band's original merchandise was auctioned for a record-breaking price.

The 1967 shirt, sold as part of Sotheby's "From the Vault: Property from the Grateful Dead and Friends," sold for $17,640, setting a new world record for the most money spent on a vintage rock shirt.

A 1967 Grateful Dead T-shirt designed by Hells Angel Allan "Gut" Terk was auctioned for $17,640,
setting a world record for the highest price paid for a vintage rock T-shirt.

The previous record was set in 2011, when a vintage Led Zepplin shirt was sold for $10,000 on eBay.

The Grateful Dead shirt was one of the band's first pieces of official merchandise and was designed by Allan "Gut" Terk, a Hells Angel and graphic artist who was a prominent figure in California's counterculture movement in the 1960s.

The winning bidder, Bo Bushnell, operates the Outlaw Archive account on Instagram, which is dedicated to 1960s motorcycle culture.

Bushnell wrote on the page that he purchased the shirt "to keep the memory of #GutTerk alive and to keep his history together under one roof."

Egyptian official claims tomb of Alexander The Great in Siwa

An Egyptian official has insisted there is sufficient evidence for the discovery of the elusive tomb of Alexander the Great, reported media outlet Egypt Independent.

According to the report, Mr Mohamed Omran director of the Tourism Department in Siwa ‘announced evidence suggesting the potential discovery of the tomb of Alexander the Great might be in the Marai area.’

Omran explained that in 1995 and 1996 a temple was discovered and the historical mission said at the time that this may be evidence of Alexander’s tomb and noted that three years ago an integrated temple dating back to the Greek and Roman era was discovered.

Siwa is renowned for its archaeological heritage because it contains antiquities and excavations dating back thousands of years, he explained.

It should be noted that two months ago as reported by Greek City Times, Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities had announced the discovery of a statue of Alexander The Great after nine months of digging, within an ancient “residential and commercial zone” in Alexandria which archeologists believe was the trading centre of the Ptolemaic period.

As they explored the al-Shatby neighbourhood of Alexandria, “the mission discovered a large network of tunnel tanks painted pink for storing rain, flood, and groundwater to be used during the draught time,” said Mostafa Waziri, Secretary-General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, to the Xinhua news agency.

Waziri went on to describe the town’s layout as “composed of a main street and several branch roads that were all connected by a sanitation network.”

In 2020 Greek archaeologist Liana Souvaltzi claimed she had discovered the real tomb of Alexander 20 years ago in Egypt, but had been blocked by the Greek and Egyptian governments from continuing her work ever since.

The location of the tomb of Alexander the Great is an enduring mystery and will continue to be the subject of discovery claims. One thing is for sure: when and if discovered it will be one of the world’s greatest finds.

Man reels in 13-foot hammerhead shark from North Carolina beach

Image

Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Just when you thought that it was safe to go into the water, a North Carolina man fishing from a beach said he was shocked to reel in a hammerhead shark measuring more than 13 feet long.

Blake Cochran said he and his friends were fishing for sharks and red drums at North Topsail Beach when he felt something large on his line.

"I knew it was something big," Cochran told WSOC-TV. "The biggest shark I've caught up to this point was like 4 feet, and this one, when I pulled it in, it was insane."

He said the pull on his line felt "like being hooked to a car."

Cochran ended up reeling in a 13-foot, 6-inch hammerhead shark that he estimated to weigh 500-700 pounds. He posted a photo of his catch to Facebook.

"He was pretty heavy," Cochran said. "It takes two to three people. You wade out to your neck and revive them and then let them go."

Man In Garden 'Splattered' With Human Waste Dumped From Plane

Image

A man was left "covered" head-to-toe in human poo after a plane unleashed its toilet waste into his garden.

The disgusting downpour managed to cover the entire garden of his Windsor home, meaning that the "garden umbrellas and him" were left soiled.

The story was brought to light by Cllr Karen Davies at a meeting of The Royal Borough Of Windsor and Maidenhead's aviation forum.

Usually, modern aircraft store their sewage in special waste tanks, ready to be disposed on landing without incident.

Yet that wasn't the case in July.

Cllr Davies explained that the overhead waste missiles have actually been a recurring issue in her area. However, they are usually far less disgusting than this latest incident.

She told the meeting: "I know a number of incidents happen every year with frozen sewage from planes, but this wasn't frozen and his whole garden was splattered in a very unpleasant way.

"He was out in the garden at the time, so a really horrible, horrible experience.

"Hopefully it never happens again to any of our residents."

She added that she had been contacted by her distraught constituent who described the incident as "dreadful".

John Bowden, another local councillor, called the splattering a "one in a billion chance", going on to suggest that the warm weather may have caused the frozen stool to "come out as a more 'fluidy' item".

Cllr Geoff Paxton, who has worked in airports for 40 years, agreed that the incident was "very rare".

He explained at the meeting that old planes often had issues with leaky toilets, which would consequently cause the poo not to freeze properly.

But, he continued, since the introduction of new vacuum toilets on modern planes this is far less of an issue, and one he hasn't seen in quite some years.

That takes guts! Texas man defiantly reconstructs VERY gory Halloween display featuring 'shredded bodies' and a working 'blood fountain' after his horrified neighbors called 911 last year

Image

Steven Novak, 43, from Dallas, made headlines in 2020 after his murder scene littered with fake bloody bodies led to multiple police visits
The artist and engineer behind the infamous 'Dallas Massacre' has since added to the gruesome décor, including a 'wood chipper blood fountain'
The machine shoots fake blood across the walkway into a small pool of 'guts' made out of painted insulation foam
There are now 55-gallon drums filled up with the 'shredded' guests of the party
Novak has also kept 'last year's hits,' including a dummy hanging off the roof and a mannequin with its head smashed in by a large safe
He has been giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at how he created the blood and guts in a series of viral TikTok videos

A Texas man whose gory Halloween decorations prompted multiple police visits last year has defiantly amped up the horror with his lawn display this October, including a refurbished wood chipper that shoots gallons of fake blood across his yard.

Steven Novak, 43, from Dallas, made headlines in 2020 after the bloodbath filled with fake bodies that he artfully installed in front of his home led to neighbors calling 911 out of fear it was a real crime scene.

The artist and engineer behind the infamous 'Dallas Massacre' has since added to the gruesome décor, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at how he created the blood and guts in a series of viral TikTok videos.

'There are lots of new gimmicks to this year’s caper,' Novak told the Dallas Observer. 'The wood chipper blood fountain being the clear centerpiece and easily the most challenging prop.'

The homeowner said it took him months 'to find an old wood chipper for sale,' admitting that 'the sellers were not pleased with its new purpose.'

The machine, which has a bloody mannequin limb hanging out the top, squirts fake blood across the walkway into a small pool of 'guts' made out of painted insulation foam.

'It’s all powered by a submersible water pump inside the [kiddie] pool which then leads back to the wood chipper fountain,' he explained. 'You can turn that pump on with your foot by pressing a hidden pedal switch.'

According to one of Novak's TikTok videos, the fountain blood is a mix of water, food coloring, and cocoa powder, which keeps the liquid from looking too translucent.

'There are lots of new details,' he told the local news. 'Fifty-five-gallon drums are now out by the curb filled up with the shredded party [of guests].

Image
Image

'And I made the body parts this year by cutting up mannequins then filling them with skeleton parts and Great Stuff insulation foam.'

Another new addition is the fake door he installed to make it look like the house has been broken into by an ax murderer.

He created the optical illusion by covering the real door with black paint that reflects very little light and mounting a second door swinging open on its hinges.

Novak has also kept 'last year's hits' — a mix of fake bodies and blood that were so gory they had the neighbors dialing the police.

There is still the dummy hanging off the roof with the large knife through its head and the fake body with its head smashed in by a large safe.

He also included the mannequin impaled by a chainsaw and the gallons of faux blood made out of corn syrup that was splattered all over the sidewalk.

Novak told the Dallas Observer that focusing on his over-the-top Halloween décor has helped keep his mind off of the real horror of the pandemic.

'This year has been rough for a lot of people,' he said. 'I think we can agree that this project is functioning as a pressure release valve.'

Novak is now welcoming donations to help fund his frightful work, and he included his Venmo account on one of the curbside bins.

As for the possibility of his updated massacre scene leading to more police visits, he isn't worried about it in the least.

'All the cops that came out last year were an absolute gas,' he said. 'I welcome them to come out and take more selfies.'

North American snapping turtle found living behind British supermarket

Image

Animal rescuers in Britain said a man walking next to a river found a 20-inch-long North American snapping turtle -- and took it home to his bathtub.

The RSPCA said it was contacted by a man who came across the non-native turtle at the side of the River Trent in Burton-on-Trent, England, while walking with his children behind the local Asda store.

The man then took the reptile home to house in his bathtub while awaiting rescuers.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Karen Brannan responded to the man's home to collect the angry turtle.

"He was a really big and aggressive turtle, so I called him Hagar," Brannan said in a news release. "I had to handle him very carefully as he was very angry, and obviously this species has quite a bite, as well as a very mobile head and neck."

Brannan said the amount of algae on the turtle's shell indicated it had been living in the area for some time.

"We fear this turtle may either have escaped -- or potentially been abandoned. It is a real concern if someone has discarded a pet like rubbish when there are animal welfare charities and organizations that would offer help," she said.

The RSPCA said it now is attempting to determine Hagar's origins.

"An animal like this could have been a real danger to other animals and people as they are capable of such a strong bite," Brannan said.

Hagar has been given a new permanent home at the National Turtle Sanctuary at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Park, the RSPCA said.

These Climbers Are Making History As the First All-Black American Team to Summit Mount Everest

Only eight Black climbers have reached the top of Mount Everest

Image

Climbing Mount Everest is not for the faint of heart... or lungs, or any body part, for that matter. More than 300 people have died on the journey and about 6,000 have fully scaled the mountain, according to Reuters. Of those successful climbers, only eight of them were Black.

But if Phil Henderson and his group of eight other Black American athletes are triumphant in their upcoming climb, they'll more than double that number. They'll also be the first all-Black expedition group to successfully summit the tallest mountain in the world.

Their mission is all part of a new project, called the Full Circle Everest Expedition, which was announced at the Outdoor Retailer Summer show in Denver this August.

"I believe this project is important to the development of our team members in their growth in the mountaineering space," Henderson told the Outside Business Journal. "It is bringing forward a greater conversation about Black and brown people in the outdoors and what that means: past, present, and future. Being that our entire team is made up of Black people, it is an important display of leadership, commitment, and teamwork to our community as well as the greater climbing world."

Beyond being the first all-Black American group to climb Everest, the Full Circle team will make history by bringing the first Black American man to the famous Himalayan peak.

Image

According to Outside Business Journal, the team includes North Face-sponsored athletes Manoah Ainuu and Frederick Campbell; Eddie Taylor, a high school teacher; Demond "Dom" Mullins, a combat veteran of the Iraq War; Abby Dione, owner of Coral Cliffs Climbing Gym; James "KG" Kagambi, a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) instructor with successful climbs of mountains in Africa and Europe; Thomas Moore, a Denver-based entrepreneur; and Rosemary Saal, a NOLS instructor who led the first all-Black American team to the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2018.

"For us as a group, that camaraderie really makes a difference," Henderson, a former instructor at NOLS, told Travel + Leisure. "We're trying to make a point [about representation in the outdoors], but we also have the opportunity as a team to support each other and have that camaraderie on Everest. For most people, especially for Black people, that doesn't happen."

Henderson, who has climbed Everest in the past without summiting, will lead the group of passionate climbers, but this won't be his first time serving as a guide; he previously led an all-Black American group to Mount Kilimanjaro's summit in Tanzania.

The Full Circle Everest Expedition group meets periodically at destinations around the U.S. for both training and team building. They've conquered mountaintops in Montana and Washington, but they're expected to take on their biggest challenge — summiting Mount Everest — in spring 2022.

"Success for us is summiting [Everest], yes, but it's also about bringing that camaraderie back with us," said Henderson, who emphasized the importance of representation and encouraging other people, especially Black people, to push beyond negative stereotypes and try outdoor activities.

"We want other folks to know that they're welcome here [in the outdoor community], too… Try it. You never know what you're going to pick up on or what you'll like until you try," he added.

Terry Fox is being commemorated in a big new way in Toronto, literally: A mural in his honour is going up on the north side of U of T's Rehabilitation Sciences Institute.

Proposals are now out from several artists as to their vision for the north-facing wall at 500 University Ave.

Image

"Thousands of people gathered along University Avenue and on Nathan Phillips Square to witness his courageous journey and to cheer him on during the Marathon of Hope," said Mayor John Tory of Fox when announcing the project.

"Terry Fox's legacy as a role model is everlasting and whichever mural is selected will be a fitting tribute in Toronto to the legacy of a great Canadian."

The public can currently give feedback on the designs until Oct. 31. You'll want to have your say now, as the work will have a massive impact on the surrounding landscape, rising multiple storeys into the air.

The project is part of ArtWorxTO's "Year of Public Art" from 2021 to 2022, and is being created in partnership with the City of Toronto's StreetARToronto (StART), U of T and the Legacy Art Project (a public art and landscape project inspired by Terry Fox).

Toronto street artists Alexander Bacon and Que Rock, Christiano De Araujo, Keitha Keeshig-Tobias Biziindam, Emmanuel Jarus and Jason Pinney have submitted their designs for consideration by the public and an Intergenerational Advisory Committee, which will select a design to be painted in summer 2022.

Alexander Bacon and Quentin Commanda (Que Rock) have submitted a colourful but soft design of a collage of images, tied together by the word "HOPE" in bold lettering in one version, though there are version without the lettering and different colour schemes. A ribbon running through the imagery represents cancer research.

Image

Bacon wanted to highlight Fox's prosthetic leg, and Rock will be contributing Indigenous imagery representing courage and determination.

A design by Christiano De Araujo shows Fox running down the street, a list of stats about his Marathon of Hope under his massive running shoe: 143 days, 42 kilometres per day, 5,373 kilometres total over six provinces. Araujo wanted to make a statement about Fox, but also educate those who might not be familiar with him.

Indigenous artist Keitha Keeshig-Tobias Biziindam presented a lively design that embraces lots of natural elements, and also highlights both a portrait and silhouette of Fox. The flora represented signifies the land where Fox's ancestors lived and the diversity of Canada, while Fox running against the sunset background highlights disabled capability.

Emmanuel Jarus submitted a beautiful black-and-white design that might blend in a bit more naturally with the streetscape, focusing on portrait imagery that shows Terry Fox's sense of determination.

Jason Pinney himself survived cancer in childhood, and has submitted a design that shows two angles of Fox running, not shying away from portraying the way he persevered through pain. Brought together by soft angles, lines and shapes, there are three colour scheme options for the design.

The mural will be going up along the route in Toronto that Terry Fox ran in 1980 during his Marathon of Hope, which he began after having one leg amputated due to cancer, in order to raise money for research as well as awareness. The spread of his cancer sadly ended his run and ultimately his life.

Stone Oak family wins Halloween by giving skeletons a new, hilarious theme per day
The Dinotes say neighbors, school buses, cars stop by to see the creations

Image
Courtesy: Oscar Carrero

SAN ANTONIO – The funny bones in this Stone Oak family are keeping the whole neighborhood laughing this Halloween.

The Dinotes are going above and beyond (the grave) this year by changing their epic skeleton displays with a new theme each day.

Couples yoga. A Bob Ross painting session. A rock band. A construction crew working on a dead end.

Those are a few of the “humerus” themes created so far, but there’s no shortage of ideas, Steven Dinote said. His family has a running list of ideas, about 50 so far, and he says some are “pretty radical.”

“People are excited, the neighbors are excited about it because they’re comical,” he said. “It’s a family thing that we do, the kids are always coming up with new ideas, most of the ideas are from the kids.”

The family started their Halloween hobby last year after they jokingly propped up a skeleton against a lawnmower.

Then they started changing the themes around their two skeletons — and they were a hit.

“We didn’t realize that how popular it got … we had neighbors all of a sudden walk on up and say ‘We love your display, we purposely change our walks just to see what you got,’” Dinote said.

Now, they have four adults, one kid-size, one dog, and one piranha-like fish. Each morning’s assembly takes about 20 minutes and possibly some prep work the night before.

Dinote’s 9-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter help set up the displays on the weekends or days off, he says.

Neighbor Oscar Carrero said he remembered the “joy” the family brought last year during the quarantine age and shared images of this year’s creations on KSAT Connect.

Carrero said when he saw the first theme of couple’s yoga, he “nearly split my gut with laughter.”

Image
Courtesy: Oscar Carrero

“After seeing his first display, I thought everyone needed to see this.”

After the pictures were uploaded on KSAT Connect, Meteorologist Mike Osterhage showed the posts on Good Morning San Antonio, to the family’s surprise.

Dinote said throughout October, cars and school buses have been stopping by for a glimpse.

“We’re just having fun with it, if nothing else we’ve probably slowed the traffic down a bit,” he said.

The family favorite is the Bob Ross theme, he said, but his son would likely say the roller-coaster is the best.

On that day, the skeletons were riding the “Bone Crusher” at the “One Flag” theme park.

Image

Dinote said their family has a great sense of humor and they are always joking around. If they can get one person to smile, that’s good enough for them, he said.

“We’re getting a lot of people coming up and thanking us and bringing a little joy. We had one person say there’s so much negative stuff going on in the news, everyone’s bitter with each other and it makes their day just to come over and see a little bit of humor,” he said. “If that helps, that makes us happy.”

“I think people forget to have a sense of humor sometimes. It’s important that we have to look past all the negative stuff out there right now.”

Dr Dre Served Divorce Papers At Cemetery As Grandmother Is Laid To Rest

Image

Dr Dre was reportedly served with divorce papers in a cemetery while he was burying his grandmother.

The rap icon, real name Andre Young, is currently in the midst of divorce proceedings with his wife of 24 years Nicole Young.

And according to TMZ, in the latest twist of the tale, a process server attempted to give him legal documents regarding money owed to Young while he was laying his grandmother to rest.

Sources close to the couple differ in where they claim the documents were served, with those on Dre's side saying they were given to him at the burial site, while those connected to Young have said they were served in the car park.

It's understood that the documents make reference to payments owed by Dre to Young's lawyer.

Image

According to reports, the music producer has already paid $325,433 of a total of $1,550,000 ordered by the courts.

Dre reportedly claims that this figure is a mistake and that he has already paid the full fee owed.

However, Young says he still has an outstanding balance of a whopping $1,224,567.

LADbible has contacted Dr Dre's representatives for a comment.

Young filed for divorce last year and cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for the split.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Dre had been ordered to pay his ex nearly $300,000 every single month in spousal support.

Young initially asked for a colossal $1.9 million a month as well as having her $5 million lawyer fees paid for by Dre..

Image

Ms Young wanted so much because of her extensive monthly outgoings, which include entertainment ($900,000), education ($60,000), laundry and cleaning ($10,000), clothes ($135,000), charitable donations ($120,000), mortgage ($100,000) and 'telephone, cellphone and email' ($20,000).

Dre told TMZ at the time: "This all seems like the wrath of an angry person being exacerbated by opportunistic lawyers."

The divorce settlement has been particularly bitter due to the dispute over whether their prenup was still valid.

Young claimed previously that she was forced to sign a prenuptial agreement before their mid-90s wedding, on account of her soon-to-be hubby's enormous wealth at the time.

He has since gone on to make more than $1 billion in record sales and products through Beats by Dre.

Young also claimed that Dre 'felt ashamed he had pressured me into signing a premarital agreement and he tore up multiple copies of the agreement in front of me'.

She added that they both agreed the prenup was void, something which Dre objected to, saying the prenup was still technically and legally active.

(Five Million in Lawyers fees, so that he can give her 900K for entertainment? Is Taylor Swift playing her Birthday? 120K for charitable donations? Isn't that him donating? 20K for telephone, cellphone and email? Email? What private email plan does she have that it helps to add up to 20K? She felt pressured into signing a prenup? So? I felt pressured into signing my cable contract. Can I use that in court to get out of it? I'm so glad I put my money into stocks instead of marriage.)

The Surprising Love Story Between a Cow and a Leopard
October 13th, 2021*

Viral photos of a leopard and a cow cuddling somewhere in rural India tell the unique love story between two very unlikely friends.

Cows and leopards are usually not the best of friends, with the latter sometimes preying on bovines to survive. However, you wouldn’t even be tempted to think that looking at a set of viral photos that have been doing the rounds on social media for nearly two decades now. They show an adult leopard cuddling and playing with a cow, which, if the accompanying caption is to be believed, adopted and breastfed the feline as a cub. The story behind the photos has been exaggerated over the years to attract even more attention, but the photos are real and the relationship between the two animals is a testament to the fact that miracles can happen.

Image

Although the photos in question have been doing the rounds online for 19 years now, they are still sometimes posted as news by pages and websites hoping to make them go viral for the billionth time. The story is most often associated with an unnamed village in Assam, when in reality it occurred in the village of Antoli, India’s Gujarat state.

Tracking a decades-old news story back to its original source is a daunting task, but according to hoax-debunking website Social Media Hoax Slayer, the earliest source appears to be a 2002 article posted on the Times of India website. The original story isn’t as bombastic as the one usually found on Facebook, but it’s still an impressive and rather unusual one.

Image

In October of 2002, the peaceful lives of Antoli’s inhabitants were disturbed by the constant nightly visits of a young leopard that behaved odd, to say the least. Instead of looking for food or simply attacking domesticated animals, it seemed particularly interested in a certain cow there…

“The leopard comes closer…there is anxiety in the air,” the Times of India described the heartwarming encounter. “The big cat slowly rolls over and raises one paw and puts it gently on the cow’s head, and makes purring sounds. The cow lets out a soft ‘moo’ in response and licks the leopard. The leopard, obviously in a playful mood, sits there waiting to be cuddled.”

Image

Soon after the unexpected nightly meetings between the cow and the leopard were observed by human villagers, small crowds started gathering on rooftops to see the magic for themselves. And sure enough, on most nights, between 10 pm and midnight, the two animals did not disappoint. However, as the human presence around the village during the visits intensified, the leopard started acting more warily.

“We have been keeping watch, but unfortunately the frequency of the leopard’s visits has decreased,”Rohit Vyas, honorary wildlife warden of Vadodara, said at the time.

Image

Although most of the posts going around social media suggest that the two animals somehow knew each other, or even that the cow had taken in the abandoned leopard cub, the original source doesn’t mention anything related to that, simply because no one knew how or even if the animals were in fact familiar with one another. A forest conservationist merely suggested that the leopard may have grown up around humans and was familiar with domestic animals.

“Sometimes animal behaviour can get modified,” conservationist H.S. Singh told the Times of India. In this case, probably because the leopard which has passed the sub-adult stage, lives in a rural area and not strictly a wild environment.”

But even if the above is true, what about the cow? Why is it so comfortable around a big cat that it should instinctively fear and run away from? We’ll probably never know the whole story, or how this unlikely “romance” ended, but one thing is for sure, nearly two decades after it was originally reported, this story still fascinates millions of people.

Travel-starved, sleep-deprived residents might find a new Hong Kong bus tour to be a snooze.

The 76-kilometer (47-mile), five-hour ride on a regular double-decker bus around the territory is meant to appeal to people who are easily lulled asleep by long rides. It was inspired by the tendency of tired commuters to fall asleep on public transit.

“When we were brainstorming new tours, I saw a social media post from my friend saying that he was stressed out by his work, he couldn’t sleep at night,” said Kenneth Kong, the marketing and business development manager of ulu travel, the organizer of the bus tours.

“But when he was traveling on the bus, he was able to sleep well. His post inspired us to create this tour that lets passengers just sleep on the bus.”

Tickets cost between $13 to $51 per person, depending on whether they choose seats on the upper or lower deck. A goodie bag for passengers includes an eye-mask and ear plugs for better sleep.

The first “Sleeping Bus Tour” last Saturday sold out entirely. Some passengers came prepared, bringing their own blankets and changing their shoes to slippers, while others brought travel pillows.

“I have been suffering from insomnia so I am here to try and get some sleep,” said 25-year-old Anson Kong, one of the passengers on the first bus tour.

He said that the tour was a good idea and “more interesting” than he expected.

On Saturday’s tour, the bus stopped so passengers could take photos at scenic spots on the city’s Lantau Island. One stop was the aircraft maintenance area near Hong Kong’s airport, where passengers can snag selfies with aircraft in the background.

Another passenger, Marco Yung, said that he joined the tour because he usually falls asleep on long-distance bus journeys, saying it was a “great opportunity” to get some sleep.

The tendency to fall sleep on public transport is a type of conditioning, according to Dr. Shirley Li, the principal investigator of the Sleep Research Clinic and Laboratory at the University of Hong Kong.

“People in Hong Kong don’t have enough time to sleep,” Li said. “That’s why we have to kind of use other times to sleep, which is our daily commute, especially when we are travelling on public transport.”

“For some people, they may tend to associate public transport with their sleep. And that’s why they found it easier to fall asleep on the bus,” she said.”
