SPAM goes on lockdown due to inflation in NYC
Image

It’s the nation’s crises in a can.

Inflation and crime have gotten so bad in Gotham that even cheap meat like Spam has to be locked up.

At Duane Reade’s store in the Port Authority bus depot, the shelf-stable product — only $3.99 a can — is now being stocked in plastic, anti-theft cases.

“I’ve never seen that before!” one cashier laughed while using a magnet to remove a can of Spam from its cage.

The cashier was among the employees, tourists and store regulars stunned that the iconic blue-and-yellow cans are now being kept under lock-and-key — some even poking fun at the sight as “a sort of Jeff Koons homage,” per one viral tweet.

Jenny Kenny, 43, who was visiting from Louisville, KY, was aware of the ongoing crime waves hitting cities like New York and San Francisco, but still couldn’t believe the sight of “so many things in boxes.”

“Some of these things are pretty ridiculous,” she said.
Image

As prices and crime skyrocket, New York City stores have taken to locking up staples like toothpaste and soap to prevent crooks from stealing and then hawking the products on the sidewalk or online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay.

Yet some shoppers were confused why Spam, along with $1.89 cans of StarKist tuna, was enclosed under plastic, while pricier foodstuffs like $5.49 cans of Amy’s soup sat unencumbered.

“To put Spam in a cage is stupid — and kind of insulting to the customers that would buy it,” said shopper Dennis Snow, 46.

Snow said he doesn’t think Spam is being stolen to “sell it for crack,” but rather because the homeless in the area are looking for a quick and easy meal.

“Someone is stealing this because they need it,” agreed Delia Kemph, a 28-year-old teacher.

Employees at the store said thefts have been surging over the past two-plus years, with one estimating a minimum of four shoplifters every evening shift.

“I don’t think they stop anything,” Iggy, 21, a store clerk, said of the anti-theft cases. “It’s security theater. If you really needed it, you would stomp on it.”

Image

The employee’s complaints were prescient: At around 7 p.m. on Thursday, a man in a black tank top and gray sweatpants had an employee unlock the glass case for a $38 electric razor, and then bolted with the appliance past a yellow-shirted security guard and out the door.

With inflation out of control — the consumer price index spiked 9.1 percent in June compared to a year ago, even as President Biden this week refused to acknowledge the nation is in a recession despite the economy contracting two quarters in a row — emboldened thieves have found a ready market for discounted stolen goods among recession-weary consumers.

Petit larceny complaints for the NYPD Midtown South Precinct, which includes the Port Authority bus terminal, have shot up 52 percent — to 1,771, through July 24 — compared to the same period last year.

Hormel CEO Jim Snee told analysts last month that prices for their legacy product were set to increase in late July to cover increased transportation, packaging and meat costs.

A spokeswoman for Walgreens, which owns Duane Reade, refused to say why Spam was locked down at this particular location, and that installing anti-theft devices is done “in response to theft data.”

Liz Tawfik, 57, a home health attendant, complained that the added security measures are hampering the once-smooth shopping experience — and annoying customers like herself.

“If you’re gonna catch a train you wanna grab something quick, it’s not quick anymore,” she said. “You might as well have someone take your order at the door and get you what you want.”

Not all drug stores have put Spam under lockdown.

Two other Duane Reades and a CVS in the Times Square area, along with a Rite Aid and CVS in Central Harlem, sold their cans of Spam, cage-free.

Dariel Cepin, 23, an employee at a West 44th Street Duane Reade, said, “Here, we lock up ice cream.”

I stopped in a CVS pharmacy near me to pick up some Benadryl and found it locked up behind plexiglass on the shelf. After a more than five minute wait I finally found a shift manager authorized to open the case and allow me to access the box. They did apologize for the inconvenience explaining it was done to prevent shoplifting - but the annoyance was so great I've resolved to steal my products at a different store going forward - Gov

Sweet Dog Was Born With a Defect That Makes Her Look Permanently Surprised

Image

Meet Belle, whose doctor diagnosed her with a birth defect that makes her look permanently surprised.

The adorable mix of doberman and cattlehound was born with the muscles in her head stretched back, leaving her looking wide-eyed at all times.

Lieschen O’Connor adopted Belle in 2017 from Lawrence Humane Society, an organization that provides care for homeless and abused animals.

Belle’s condition doesn’t cause her any pain but her 38-year-old mom regularly needs to apply eye drops as they often get dry.

The dog’s unique look has won her over 160,000 followers on TikTok.

“Her expressions make my heart swell,” said one fan. Another called her the cutest dog on TikTok. “I love her so much”.

Lieschen, a 38-year-old who lives in Tyler, Kansas, says, “Belle is extremely sweet and a little goofy.”

“If dogs could laugh, Belle would definitely laugh a lot!”

Owner searching for zebra on the loose in Missouri
July 29, 2022 / 11:09 AM*

July 29 (UPI) -- A Missouri man is on the hunt for a zebra that escaped from his property in Miller County and has been on the run for four days.

Joe McDevitt said he bought Marty the zebra about three months ago and the animal escaped through a fence on his property four months ago.

McDevitt posted a video to TikTok showing Marty narrowly evading capture when the zebra briefly joined a herd of cattle.

McDevitt said he is also currently building a new enclosure for Marty to prevent future zebra escapes.

Zebras are legal to own in Missouri (Um excuse me, what?! :eh: ) with the approval of the state Department of Agriculture.

Naked sunbather chases wild boar through park after it steals his laptop bag
Image
A naked sunbather was seen chasing wild boar through a park after it stole his laptop bag.
Amusing photographs from Germany show the man running after the animal to try and claim the plastic bag back.
But the cheeky boar and its two piglets appear to be too quick for the sunbather, who can't keep up with their speedy little trotters.
As the incident unfolds, groups of friends and family sat on the grass watch on and laugh.
Heads are seen turning in surprise and amusement in the hilarious photographs.
The incident happened at Teufelssee Lake - a bathing spot in the Grunwell Forest in Berlin, Germany.

Polish Museum Forced To Ask Couples To Stop Having Sex Behind Its Exhibits

A Polish museum has become such a popular spot for couples to hook up that they've been forced to ask people to stop having sex behind the exhibitions.

The Fort Gerharda military museum, part of a 19th-century former Prussian fortress in Świnoujście, close to the border with Germany in northwestern Poland, recently upgraded their CCTV system to keep a better watch on their exhibits, and instead found themselves catching a bunch of exhibitionists in the act.

Their cameras have caught multiple couples getting it on in the museum, forcing them to make an official plea for loved up couples to take it somewhere else.

Image
Apparently this is the sort of place where lots of couples like to have sex.

While it's true that nothing quite says 'romantic setting' like a Polish military museum, there is a time and a place, and 'in a museum full of military history exhibitions' is not it.

On that topic, the museum has suggested that couples who just can't keep out of each other's pants during their visit should take a trip to one of the several deserted beaches nearby.

“Maybe it is worth taking a walk toward the wild beaches, which are abundant on the right bank of Świnoujście?” they wrote. “So far, we only have cameras in the museum, the reflector barrack and the exhibition of items from the wreckage.”

Image
The Polish museum posted pictures of some of the sexier corners, presumably where they’ve caught people doing the deed.

The museum said they wanted to 'ask our amorous guests for understanding' and to please stop having sex behind the exhibitions where they think they can't be seen.

They said they understood that for some people the mix of 'unique exhibits and uniformed service can give you chills, excitation and excitement', but couples should find somewhere else.

While couples using the museum for sex were already getting caught on camera, staff also didn't want any damage done to the exhibits, which are full of historical items.

The museum explained that security staff check the CCTV records before deleting them, so the footage of couples caught on camera isn't going to be kept.

Image
Nothing says sexy like artillery. “We understand that unique exhibits and uniformed service can give you chills, EXCITATION and excitement,” museum reps joked.

The post gained national — and international — attention, with people laughing over the unexpected erotic hot spot. According to the museum’s director, Piotr Piwowarczyk, it’s not a joke or p.r. stunt.

He explained the scope of the problem and how they'd been catching couples having sex on CCTV.

He told Warsaw-based newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza: "In less than a month since the beginning of the holidays we’ve already had three recordings of lovers engaged in trysts.

"Visitors to the fort have various temperaments, some of them very conservative. We don’t want them to be shocked during their visit by stumbling across a couple engaged in lustful antics."

When asked why he thought so many couples were choosing to have sex in the museum, Piwowarczyk suggested it might be because the place has some dark corners where people think they can't be seen. “Or maybe it’s a chakra?” he joked. “Perhaps this place releases energy in the area of the body responsible for sex?”

He made it very clear that despite what they might think, couples having sex in a dark corner can be seen on the CCTV – and he would really like them to stop.

Having sex in public in Poland is illegal and can land people a 1,500 złoty fine ($371) if you get caught.

(They should release the footage on pornhub to raise money for the museum  )

Doctors replace NYC kid’s jaw bone with leg section in amazing surgery

Image

This lucky Brooklyn kid already has a leg up.

Local doctors recently performed rare surgery on 9-year-old Demetri Pristouris, using a section of the fibula bone in his lower right leg to replace part of his right jaw, where a benign tumor was threatening to disfigure him.

“I was very nervous when I had the surgery. I was scared. I feel much better now,” said Demetri of Dyker Heights.

The boy’s mom, Stacy Pristouris, said her son’s saga began when she noticed Demetri’s right jaw was swollen this past Thanksgiving.

What she thought was an allergic reaction to food was later confirmed to be a growing tumor.

Demetri ended up in an eight-hour surgery in February at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center at Northwell Health’s Long Island Jewish Hospital on Long Island.

One of Demetri’s surgeons, Dr. David Hirsch, said it is rare to replace a child’s jaw.

Dutch Milestone: Quarter-Million Pounds of Plastic Cleared From Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Image

Last year, wiz kid Boyan Slat announced that “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch can now be cleaned,” after a prototype cleaning system proved successful.

Since that deployment in August 2021, System 02 (or “Jenny”) has now collected 220,000 pounds (101,353 kg) of plastic over 45 extractions, sweeping an area of ocean of over 3,000km2 comparable to the size of Luxembourg or Rhode Island.

“Added to the 7,173 kg of plastic captured by our previous prototype systems, The Ocean Cleanup has now collected 108,526 kg of plastic from the “GPGP”—more than the combined weight of two and a half Boeing 737-800s, or the dry weight of a space shuttle,” Slat wrote on his website.

According to a 2018 study organized by The Ocean Cleanup to map the GPGP, the total amount of accumulated plastic is around 79,000,000 kg, or 100,000,000 kg if one includes exterior areas.

“Thus, if we repeat this 100,000 kg haul 1,000 times—the Great Pacific Garbage Patch will be gone”.

While that’s not particularly encouraging since that 100,000 kilograms were extracted over a year, meaning 1,000 years would be needed to clean the GPGP, Slat has better ideas.

“System 03, which is expected to capture plastic at a rate potentially 10 times higher than System 002 through a combination of increased size, improved efficiency, and increased uptime, will be starting soon,” Slat said.

The idea with System 03 will be to go big—and to remove the need for support vessels, thusly reducing the cost of each ton of plastic removed as the support vessels are the highest input cost.

The capture area is nearly two miles in total, and despite the fact that it’s essentially a net, the capture of fish or other marine life remains less than a quarter of a percentage point of the total haul.

Slat, despite his humanitarian brilliance, seems to receive his fair share of criticism, but in a recent Instagram post, he helps us understand just exactly how critical the work he is doing will be to the future of the oceans.

Tierhilfe Gusental, an animal rescue service in Upper Austria, said in a news release that the woman returned to her Natternbach home after a trip to Croatia and was unpacking when she discovered a mother scorpion and 17 babies in her bag.

Rescuers said they intend to return the scorpions to the wild in their home country.

"The animals were secured and handed over to us. They are currently in the Linz animal shelter until they start their return journey," the news release said.

Giant metal insect suddenly appears in vacant lot in Vancouver

Image

First there were murder hornets. Now, there's this.

A giant metal insect "has landed" in a vacant lot visible from the SkyTrain in Vancouver.

The piece of public art popped up on a piece of land in the south, and is visible while passing between Marine Drive and Bridgeport stations.

It can also be seen from the Canada Line bikeway, the artist behind the installation said in a post on Instagram.

The piece titled Queen BX1000 was designed by an artist who calls themselves Junko Playtime.

"The queen bee has landed. Ready to pollinate your senses," posted the artist whose real name is unknown. On social media, the artist describes their work as "DIY public art installations" involving reclaimed and natural materials.

In the case of the hornet, it appears those materials were mostly with car parts.

Image

The artist hasn't said much about the piece, but posted a video of the creation of the piece last month.

"The installation was created without the aid of a motorized vehicle. All materials were collected within the city and transported to the site on makeshift bicycle trailer setups," Junko wrote.

Image

Much of their work has been installed in the Montreal area. The artist said this is the first installation they've done on Canada's West Coast.

There were a tons of stories that my wife and I thought were funny this week.
And yes Guv, nice try but not good enough
And a special call out to PennySerenade for getting a foul ball at the base ball game. But our winner this week is unbelievable. I remember the blank canvas that sold for a bunch of money, but a messy pickle stuck to the ceiling
Some fans are relishing in the work calling it “genius” and “brilliant”; others have called it “moronic”.
Our favorite line...
“I got kicked out of a McDonald’s by the police for doing this when I was a teenager, now it’s art.”
The work carries a NZD$10,000 price tag, and will cost the buyer another NZD$4.44 for a cheeseburger. The institution, or collector who owns it, will be given instructions on how to recreate the art in their own space.
“It’s not about the virtuosity of the artist standing there in the gallery throwing it to the ceiling – how it gets there doesn’t matter, as long as someone takes it out of the burger and flicks it on to the ceiling,” Moore said.

Study Shows Duolingo Learning Outcomes Are Comparable to University Classes

Image

A study found that, despite being a 1-week wonder-kind-of-habit, people who study languages on Duolingo perform as well as University students with years under their belts.

The most popular language-learning platform on Earth, Duolingo offers courses on more than 20 languages, but whether or not they materialize as useful is difficult to ascertain.

The experiment, published in Foreign Language Annals, demonstrated that Duolingo learners who completed five units in the Spanish or French courses performed as well on reading and listening tests as students who had completed four semesters of university language instruction.

What’s more is that Duolingo learners achieved four semesters of proficiency in reading and listening in less than half the time as their college counterparts.

“Our results indicate that learners who use Duolingo as a tool for self-directed study show substantial proficiency development,” said Dr. Xiangying Jiang, lead learning scientist at Duolingo and first author on the publication.

“We hope to have shed light on the potential effectiveness and comparability of Duolingo, as measured through standardized tests.”

Further research has shown no sign of plateauing, since Duolingo learners who completed seven units of the Spanish or French courses earned reading and listening scores comparable to five university semesters.

“It’s important for us to develop courses and teaching tools that deliver the highest-quality language education to all learners,” said Dr. Cindy Blanco, senior learning scientist at Duolingo. “This research represents real progress towards achieving our mission of providing high-quality education for everyone.”

As far as free apps go, it’s hard to top Duolingo. There’s a million ways to learn Spanish or French, but Duolingo includes courses on languages that may be harder to find free instruction for but that one might need for a vacation, such as Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, or the Scandinavian languages.

Another Roadside AttractionImage
Mobile Art Gallery

I was in need of a feel good story after a long week of work. I found it just down the road from my house.

A couple of miles west at the intersection of Stage Gulch Road and Abode Road (yeah, we live in the no longer so wild West) is an 18 wheel tractor trailer sitting on a totally unused piece of land. It is adorned with paintings of Victorian era woman and the legend “Sandra’s Art Gallery”.

Now at first when the trailer first showed up I thought it was one of those roadside stands selling assembly line made in China “art” that is sold not by the artistic value but by the foot. It turns out Sandra’s Art Gallery is far from that.

The mobile gallery is the project of Richard and Sandra Satule, a couple of Lithuanian emigrees. Sandra is a visual artist. She lives to paint says her husband. And the pair were making a decent living selling her artwork and those of other local artists in their brick and mortar store in the town of Redding.

That is until their house burned down in one of those increasingly common wildfires we have in these parts that apparently Joe Manchin has finally realized might be connected to climate change.

Sorry, meant to keep this non-political.

Richard and Sandra bought a new house.

Before we bought it, I asked people if there have ever been fires there, near our second house, and people said not for the last 200 years. So we bought the house and five weeks later it was gone.

Gone as in another wildfire. Two houses burnt to the ground in less than two years. Not for nothing, but I wouldn’t want to be standing next to these guys in a thunderstorm.

Sandra went into a deep depression. Painting stopped. Life stopped. The idea of buying another house was too off putting to even consider. So Richard did the only thing he could think to do with the insurance money from the second fire.

He bought a boat.

Then he bought the tractor trailer. The one that’s now parked at the corner of Stage Gulch and Adobe Roads. And he announced to Sandra that he was going to turn it into a mobile art gallery for her to sell her work.

I’m sure she probably stared at her husband like he was a crazy man. But you know, the thing about marriage is that after a while when one or the other of you has a nutty idea the other one realizes they can turn tail and run or get to work making this crazy idea a reality.

She got to work. The task of having to fill this 48 foot behemoth with art had her painting ten hours a day seven days a week. And when she wasn’t painting she was making stuffed animals, other toys, and crafts. That was enough to get her out of her depression.

She turned into the anti-Marie Kondo. Filling the space sparked joy.

Meanwhile Richard readied the rig and found a spot to park it, at least for the foreseeable future. When there was enough product to open the doors, well, door, he lowered the gate, put out the signs, and got to work selling art.

Well selling might be too strong a word. Some days he would have one person stop by, sometimes none. The biggest day was ten visitors. Did they buy? Eh, not so much. It was more of a true roadside attraction. They don’t even have a website for it. Stop in and buy or pass on by. Old school.

I kind of admire that. The pair have turned the not so mobile art gallery into an art piece in and of itself. The art inside? It’s not bad, not exactly my taste but I’m sure it would scratch an artistic itch in many people the same way the late Margaret Keane‘s Big Eyes paintings did.
Image
For me, it’s just a weird wonderful monument to love and commitment and not allowing the troubles the world heaps upon you to keep you down. It would have been easy after fire destroys your house not once but twice to just walk away, stop creating, stop finding a way to make a living from those creations, but the Satules instead found another outlet for their creativities. Because of that the community now has a new wonder, a new roadside attraction.

As someone once said, ain’t nothing wrong with that.

‘Like an alien obelisk’: space debris found in Snowy Mountains paddock believed to be from SpaceX mission

Image

Astrophysicist Brad Tucker says he often gets calls from people who think they’ve found space junk but the scorched metal found by two farmers is ‘very real’

The Australian Space Agency is investigating space debris found in farmland in the Snowy Mountains in southern NSW, after being notified by an astrophysicist who believes it to be from a SpaceX mission.

Brad Tucker, an astrophysicist at the Australian National University, says he often gets calls from people who believe they’ve found space junk – and they are normally easy to rule out.

“This was different,” he said.

Tucker received a call last Thursday from Mick Miners and Jock Wallace, two sheep farmers in the small town of Dalgety, who reported having found a scorched object. Their report matched a SpaceX spacecraft which re-entered the earth’s atmosphere at 7am on 9 July, 20 months after its launch in November 2020.

The farmers were connected to Tucker via ABC local radio, where he is a regular guest to talk about space.

The SpaceX Dragon capsule was observed breaking apart above the area of Australia where the farmers found the debris. Its re-entry was seen and heard by people from Canberra to Bendigo, with many sharing it on social media.

Tucker drove for two hours to Miners’ farm to see if the object they had found was the unpressurised trunk of the capsule – a structure that is needed for take-off but dumped prior to re-entry.

His first impression, he said, was something that “kind of just looks like a burnt tree … and then you come up to it, it’s like this alien obelisk almost”.

“I knew without a doubt this was a very real incident and a very real piece just sticking out of the ground.”

Image

Tucker said he could tell it was real because it was made of composite materials designed to withstand heat, including woven carbon fire for insulation. It also showed clear signs of scorching due to re-entry.

One of the panels of the debris appeared to have had a part number. “It’s a very easy way for SpaceX to confirm it because there’s a label on it,” he says.

He documented the discovery on YouTube.

SpaceX has not yet confirmed to Tucker that the debris belonged to SpaceX Dragon, and has not yet responded to a request from Guardian Australia.

The debris has been assessed by the Australian Space Agency (ASA).

A spokesperson from ASA told Guardian Australia their technical experts had “visited a remote part of the Snowy Mountains area of southern New South Wales, after the discovery of space debris”.

“The agency is actively working to support formal identification of the objects, and is engaging with our counterparts in the US, as well as other parts of the commonwealth and local authorities as appropriate,” the spokesperson said.

Tucker says space junk is intended to land in the ocean, and it’s a “super rare” occurrence for it to land in a populated area.

Archaeologists hunt for clues on lost Anglo-Saxon queen

Image

Archaeologists from the University of Reading have started a project to search for clues about Cynethryth, one of Britain’s most powerful Anglo-Saxon queens during the 8th century AD.
Cynethryth was a Queen of Mercia, wife of King Offa and mother of King Ecgfrith. She is the only Anglo-Saxon queen consort whose name was minted on coinage (possibly to emulate the Byzantine Empress Irene) and was even associated with her husband in the charters.

After Offa’s death in AD 796, Cynethryth took religious vows and became abbess of a monastery at Cookham, near Maidenhead, England. In August 2021, archaeologists, headed by Gabor Thomas from the University of Reading announced the discovery of the monastery in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church.

A network of over twenty monasteries was established along the route of the Thames from its source to its mouth in the Anglo-Saxon period, but barely any of the sites on this ‘monastic superhighway’ have been subject to archaeological investigation.

As part of a three-year excavation, the team plan to conduct an extensive study of the monastery in the hope of finding evidence of the lost queen. The team also hope to unearth more of the layout of the monastic buildings and items that offer clues about the daily life of the people who lived there.

Dr Gabor Thomas from the University of Reading said: “This once-powerful monastery has lay hidden for centuries, which makes it an excellent prospect for discoveries that would provide clues about Anglo-Saxon life in a relatively unexplored region of England.

“This will be a valuable opportunity to open a window into a crucial period of English history, as well as giving the archaeologists of tomorrow a chance to practise their skills, and potentially play a leading role in one of Britain’s most exciting current archaeological digs.”

Bottled Water Jelly – A New Way to Cool Off This Summer
July 29th, 2022*

If you don’t like the watery texture of water, you may want to try to keep yourself hydrated with some water jelly, a new hit summer product from Japan.

I’m too old to spend time on TikTok, but every once in a while I deep dive down a rabbit hole only to find the craziest things imaginable. The latest such experience lead me to a short clip of someone buying a bottle of water from a Japanese vending machine. Only the water doesn’t flow as you’d expect; instead, it comes out as jelly, which apparently makes sense, since it’s something called water jelly. You can drink it right out of the bottle, eat it with a spoon, or top it with fruit and enjoy it as a refreshing treat.

Except for the above-mentioned TikTok video, there isn’t too much information on water jelly online, at least outside of Japan. Luckily, we have Google Translate, and even though it always struggles with Japanese, it did help me find some info on this intriguing product.

Apparently, water jelly is one of the hottest drinks in Japan right now. According to a PR Times press release, it was launched last year and ended up being a huge summer hit, selling 2.8 times better than the producer – a company called JR East Cross Station Water Business Company – expected.

Although its clear color and misleading name – From AQUA Water Jelly – makes it seem like it’s just water in jelly form, this is actually a flavored product, with the most popular flavor available being ramune. It apparently has a caloric content of 55 calories per 100 ml, which is surprisingly high, considering 100 ml of Coca Cola contains only 37.5 calories.

From Aqua water jelly has to be chilled to achieve its gelatinous texture, but you can also freeze it if you want to consume it as a sorbet.

Although some commenters on TikTok argued that water jelly makes it easier for the elderly and people with swallowing difficulties to stay hydrated, because it slows down the flow rate, market data shows that the product is most popular with consumers between the ages of 30 and 50.

Following last year’s successful launch, the maker of water jelly has already increased production to keep up with demand, and also introduced a larger 515-gram bottle. Unfortunately, water jelly is currently only available in Japan.
