Man wrestles shark on New York beach in shocking video: ‘Holy s–t!’

“Jaws”-dropping footage of a manhandled man-eater is going viral amid record-setting shark sightings, attacks and beach closures in the New York area.

The video, filmed Sunday, shows an unidentified man wrestling with the shark at Smith Point Beach on Fire Island — where two shocking shark attacks took place last month.

Eyewitness Emily Murray told The Post that she was out on a walk when she noticed the man battling the beast, before quickly whipping out her cellphone to record the drama.
Image
“Holy s–t,” she can be heard exclaiming in the background of her clip, as other beachgoers gathered to watch the seaside spectacle.

“He [the man] had been fishing and caught the shark by accident,” Murray explained. “He was attempting to unhook it and cut it free.”

In Murray’s clip, the fisherman can be seen standing in the shallows of the water trying to bring the shark to shore.
Image
A subsequent photo snapped by Murray shows the man being assisted by a second person as they pull the predator onto the sand.

They eventually unhooked the shark and released it back into the water.

While it has not been confirmed, the creature actually appeared to be a sand tiger shark — a non-aggressive species of shark known only to attack humans when bothered first.

Murray told The Post that the beach was not closed to swimmers, deadpanning: “I feel like we’ve all gotten used to it [shark sightings].”

However, visitors to Smith Point Beach have been on high alert in recent weeks, following two separate attacks.

On July 13, a 41-year-old surfer was rushed to a hospital after being bitten by a 4-foot tiger shark while out on the water on his board.

The predator left a 4-inch gash in the man’s leg, but he survived the terrifying ordeal.

Meanwhile, on July 3, a young lifeguard was bitten on the chest and right hand by a shark estimated to be 5 feet in length.

The guard — who was in the middle of a training exercise — fought off the beast with his bare hands before making it to shore.

Shark attacks on Long Island “are extremely rare,” according to local officials, but they have increased in frequency as of late.

The past two years saw more shark sightings than the entire previous decade combined.

In July alone, there were four other incidents recorded across Long Island.

Meanwhile, the other parts of the East Coast are also currently experiencing a shark scourge with a spate of attacks occurring this summer.

There have been several shark sightings and attacks in Florida, with a recent viral video showing two sharks circling swimmers frolicking in the water at a Jacksonville beach.

Couple's horror as their two dogs eat winning lottery ticket - ripping it to shreds

Image

A couple have cashed in their lottery winnings - despite their two dogs shredding the ticket into pieces. Nathan and Rachael Lamet, from Salem, Massachusetts, US, sent the damaged ticket to the Lottery with a note and guilty picture of their pooches.

The pair fell lucky when a personnel was able to fit the chewed pieces back together and confirmed their winning numbers. A statement released by the company reads: "Officials at the Oregon Lottery have seen lottery tickets in many different states. Washed in a pair of jeans, dropped in a mud puddle, and even run over by cars. But earlier this week was a first.

Image

"The Oregon Lottery received a letter with a torn-up ticket and a picture of two dogs. That's right, the dogs ate the lottery ticket."

Alaskan Klee Kias, 11-month-old Apple and two-year-old Jack, have been in the family since they were puppies, and the doggy duo managed to get up to some serious mischief this month.

Rachael Lamet said: "For some reason we left the ticket on the ottoman and they decided it was delicious. I went to bed and when I woke up it was eaten to the point that I thought it was unable to be checked.

"But my husband thought it was hilarious and someone might get a good laugh at at the very least. He said it's for sure a winner."

Staff at Oregon Lottery were able to put the ticket back together like a jigsaw puzzle and soon realised it was worthy of the prize.

Squirrels are 'splooting' all over New York City

Image

It has been one hot summer in New York City, and the continued heat has impacted more than just the behavior of humans.

Squirrels in New York City parks have been spotted sprawled out on their stomachs with their arms and legs stretched out during very warm days, or splooting, as it's less commonly known.

Those catching a glimpse of the squirrels in this peculiar position have posted photos online. More than 40,000 posts on Instagram have been tagged with the word "splooting," with posts showing squirrels, dogs and even cats in the position. As it turns out, the activity is actually healthy for animals and is one way that helps them cool down amid extreme summer heat.

Many mammals have less fur on their bellies compared to the rest of their body, so on hot days the animals will lie flat on their stomach against cooler surfaces, such as rocks or cooler ground, to shed some heat and keep cool, according to Dan Blumstein, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The New York City Parks Department took to Twitter to let others know this activity is perfectly normal and healthy for mammals. "If you see a squirrel lying down like this, don't worry it's just fine. On hot days, squirrels keep cool by splooting," the department said in a viral tweet.

Central Park, a popular place to spot squirrels, has recorded many warmer than average days this summer. The park even came just a few degrees shy of 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday and recorded above-average high temperatures for 11 of the first 12 days of August.

Blumstein said he first heard the term "splooting" to describe how corgis would lie flat on their stomach and put their hind legs straight out behind them. However, the professor told AccuWeather that he used a different term to refer to the way squirrels do it.

"I always referred to this as 'doing the rug' because the animals looked like bear or lion rugs...the ones where the head was still attached!" Blumstein told AccuWeather.

Many other animals also sploot or "do the rug" to stay cool, such as chipmunks, rabbits, foxes, raccoons and many others, according to PennLive. But for New York City, spotting these mammals splooting will be difficult in the coming days as rain and cooler weather are expected to encompass much of the Northeast this week.

Dad invents flamethrower for kids to play with at home: ‘Best toy ever’

It brings new meaning to the phrase “burn, baby, burn.”

Fun-loving Canadian dad Daniel Hashimoto successfully converted a household leaf blower into a flamethrower that his children use to “scorch” around their backyard.

James, 11, and Sophia, 7, have declared it “the best toy ever” in a disarming video that’s now incinerating the internet.

“To the children, it was not a deadly weapon, but more a dynamic and giggle-inducing obstacle,” their father Hashimoto, a 39-year-old animation worker from Prince Edward Island, told South West News Service. “They had a friend over to play on the patio, and we decided to let them have some supervised play with this electric leaf blower.”

Relax already: The DIY device might look diabolical — but the burst of flame is actually a very harmless blaze of flame-colored silk fabric.

Hashimoto’s rationale? He and his wife Mandy Richardville, 41, are “hoping to inspire creativity for the kids.”

Image

“So far, it’s paid off!” he said.

The only reason Hashimoto isn’t catching heat for endangering his two tots is because his flamethrower only expels strips of silk colored to look like realistic fire.

“We decided to see how the lightweight fabric might play with the blower, so Sophia grabbed a large rubber band and some tape, and we affixed it to the nozzle,” Hashimoto said. “The result was even more spectacular than we imagined — large billowing waves looked remarkably like flames — and so the device immediately was dubbed ‘the flame thrower.’ “

Now, the kids play games like “flame tag” or jump rope over the embers — they even reenact scenes similar to the Nickelodeon show “Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Image

“The children all took turns chasing each other in a game of ‘Flame Tag.’ We also played a jump-rope-over-the-flames game, and the children acted out a ‘fire bending’ play,” Hashimoto said.

Even before the landscaping faux torch came to be, Hashimoto put his leaf blower to good use with the kids, the playfully pyro patriarch added.

“We hovered ping-pong balls, did slow-motion videos of our hair blowing in the wind, tried inflating a fitted sheet like a big marshmallow, and finally the flame thrower . . . When you’re a kid, play time is epic! You can imagine larger-than-life scenarios.”

Image

Beyond hosting the best playdates in the neighborhood and being a shoo-in for dad of the year, Hashimoto said that this sort of creativity will go a long way in the development of children.

“I believe that most children can turn this kind of imagination into being good at improvising, and dealing with challenges,” he said. “We definitely want to encourage imaginative play, creative problem solving and inventing a fun new game out of what’s lying around.”

Tourist says how great Barcelona is on TV - while man steals bag in background
An interview subject spoke happily about the amazing food, beautiful beaches and clean water in Barcelona while a man appeared to steal a backpack from the beach behind him

Image

An alleged thief was filmed stealing on a Barcelona beach - as a holidaymaker interviewed on Spanish TV raves about the city’s great food and beautiful weather.

The man appeared in the background of a news interview as a tourist told a reporter “I love Barcelona ”.

The interview continued uninterrupted as the figure bent down to pick up a rucksack, which had been left unattended under a pair of trousers and walked away.

As he did the interview subject says: “The beach is very beautiful, the water is clean and cold.”

Seconds later the bewildered owner of the rucksack comes into shot and shouts: “Someone’s stolen my stuff, did anyone see him?”

Image
The tourist was happily chatting about how much he liked Barcelona

He comes close to bumping into the camera crew as he walks around yelling: “My bag” as a bikini-clad woman carrying a paddle board looked on.

The man being interviewed seems oblivious to the chaos going on behind him, telling the reporter “What I love as well is the food" before patting his stomach and continuing "My belly!!”

The footage, broadcast on Spanish state-owned channel TVE and filmed at the popular Barcelona city beach Sant Miquel, went viral on Monday.

Police revealed they had tracked down and identified the suspect.

A spokesman for the Guardia Urbana city police said: “Thanks to a video published on social networks and the victim’s police report, we have identified and reported the perpetrator of a theft on Sant Miquel beach.

“The thief is seen in the footage taking advantage of the owner’s absence to steal a bag that has been left momentarily and flee the scene.”

One social media user wrote alongside a copy of the video: “This is when TV can’t get any better. They interview a man to ask him what he likes best about Barcelona while a thief steals a bag behind him."

In April another TVE live broadcast went viral after two women holidaymakers started their Easter break in style by gatecrashing national TV with a giant inflatable phallus.

Image
A man comes up behind him and grabs the rucksack

The pair inadvertently invaded a flagship lunchtime news bulletin seen by millions of people every day with the bright pink inflatable.

Veteran reporter Lluis Mestres was in the middle of a live broadcast about the large numbers of international flights in and out of busy Palma Airport when the two women walked by.

One had her left arm wrapped tightly round the inflatable which was only partly covered by her coat and left nothing to the imagination.

The hilarious moment was caught on Telediario 1, the afternoon 3pm edition of the Telediario news bulletin on Spanish state-owned channel TVE.

The flagship newscast, one of three Telediario editions a day, is the longest-running programme in the history of television in Spain as it has been broadcast daily since September 15 1957 when dictator Francisco Franco was still in power.

Each of the three average around 2.6 million viewers.

Opening the Doors to New Worlds Through Breath
August 16, 2022*

• Because we could all (mostly) use some spiritual healing, now and then...

“Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again,” stated Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh. Like many followers of Buddhist philosophy, he often points out the damage that being disconnected from your thoughts and emotions can cause.

Image

A lack of self-awareness can lead to poor emotional regulation, inadequate conflict resolution skills, and more. Controlling your breath is about much more than being more in tune with your inner world, however. It is also about accessing new realms—including surreal and psychedelic ones—using only your mind as the vehicle.

What Are the Benefits of Altered Consciousness?

Human consciousness is altered to the extent that monitoring and controlling functions (for instance, deliberately one’s attention on something to achieve a personal goal) are modified. This new state can make people more aware of the events that have shaped them, or more adept at transcending the limits of typical voluntary control. In this sense, entering into such a state can enhance human performance. Many people across the globe take part in ayahuasca ceremonies, for instance, to obtain insight and emotional healing, foster personal growth, and even come into contact with spiritual beings. Some people are reluctant to try ayahuasca because people can experience short-term symptoms (such as nausea and digestive issues) that they would rather bypass. What if breathing could provide similar benefits, without the side-effects?

Why is Breath Control so Important?

Breath control is one of the most important skills to master if you have anxiety. Controlled breathing stops panic in its tracks by ensuring you do not take in too many short, rapid breaths and end up hyperventilating (because of the overload of oxygen). If you are interested in psychedelic breathing, it is a good idea to learn how to control breath. There are many schools that both teach and train others to share breathing skills. Embracing psychedelia can help your health in many ways. However, you should also learn a wider array of skills that will help you calm down when anxiety is high, enter into a more positive mood, and embrace mindfulness

The Origins of Psychedelic Breathing

Psychedelic breathing as we know it today has its origins in the work of Stanislav Grof and his wife Christina, who together devised a deep breathing technique that would enable individuals to enter into a psychedelic state. Grof, a Professor of Psychology at John Hopkins University, had has often espoused that psychedelics could revolutionize psychology. However, substances such as LSD are illegal, so breath is an excellent alternative that can be accessed by all. The Grofs’ technique is known as ‘holotropic breathwork’. It involves rapid, heavy breathing until a state of altered consciousness is reached.

Image

Promising Results

Holotropic breathing is far from a ‘hippy technique’ that is used to experience something new or groundbreaking. Currently, it is being studied for its potential to help people with difficult-to-treat conditions like PTSD. Trials have already shown that therapist-led MDMA sessions enabled two-thirds of participants to go from having PTSD to no longer qualifying for this diagnosis. One 2018 study showed that psychedelics increase the number of connections between the brain’s neurons and stimulate additional structural changes. The researchers stated that their findings indicate that specific substances may be able to repair and rewire circuits, which could help reduce the effects of mood and anxiety disorders.

Studies have shown that entering psychedelic realms through substances like ayahuasca and magic mushrooms can benefit mental health. However, not everyone who has this aim is ready or willing to try substances that may have side-effects. Holotropic breathing is an ideal way to experience an altered state of consciousness in a completely natural way.

Boston police boat comes to rescue of stranded groom

Image

Officers with the Boston Police Department’s harbor patrol unit are used to helping boaters in distress, but last weekend Officer Joe Matthews came to the rescue of a groom in danger of missing his own wedding.

Patrick Mahoney was scheduled to get married on Thompson Island in the middle of Boston Harbor on Saturday, but the boat that was supposed to ferry him to the island where his bride-to-be was already waiting broke down, police said in a post on their website.

It gets worse. The groomsmen, photographer, DJ and floral arrangements were also stuck on the mainland.

Enter Matthews, who transported more than a dozen people to the island on his police boat so Mahoney’s marriage to Hannah Crawford could go on as scheduled.

Snake Given Robot Legs to Walk by Inventor: 'Cannot Believe This Works'

A YouTuber has gained millions of views in just a couple of days after he built robot legs to help a snake "walk."

The video, released on August 13, was made by Allen Pan, a content creator who uses engineering know-how to create homemade exoskeletons, battlebots and other inventions that often attract millions of views online.

Pan said the project's purpose was to prove that he is a "snake lover" after he attracted some criticism from a previous video in which he and some friends appeared to capture a wild snake with the alleged purpose of sneaking it past airport security. (The snake ended up escaping before this could be attempted.)

Image
An inventor shows how he set out to engineer a device that snakes can use to "walk." Above, a python.

In the new video, Pan said he feels sorry for snakes because "they lost their legs."

It's thought that about 100 million to 150 million years ago, snakes roamed on legs before they evolved to the point where they could survive without them.

The circumstances surrounding this change have been a topic of debate. Some argue that snakes lost their legs to better adapt to water environments; others think being legless would have enabled snakes to move underground more easily, Scientific American reports.

In any case, Pan's video shows how he set out to engineer a device that snakes can use to "walk," with one condition being that the snake must be able to freely enter and exit the device on its own.

The result is a hollow tube with robotic legs attached to servos that can be controlled from a laptop.

Toward the end of the video, Pan visits a snake breeder who agrees to lend a python to try out the machine. The python ends up slithering into the tube, which is then controlled by Pan. The snake itself had no control over the legs.

Throughout, the snake lies with its head sticking out of one end of the tube, apparently content with being transported around on the legs. At the end of the video, Pan stops the legs from moving and the snake slithers out of one end of the tube.

"I cannot get over the image of the snake crawling into its robotic exoskeleton," Pan said. "I cannot believe that this worked!"

As of Monday morning, the video had gained over 1.6 million views on YouTube, while a video clip tweeted by Pan had 13.5 million views on Twitter.

"Stop pitching me your crypto startups," wrote one Twitter user who shared the video. "This is the only kind of tech innovation that interests me."

"Finally, lizards are real," wrote another.

Toad smuggles lift in student's suitcase

Image

The amphibian travelled more than 5,000 miles to Cardiff after hopping into university student Hannah Turian's luggage as she returned home from the Asian country.

The creature is now being cared for by a reptile expert after spending 35 hours on the road and in the air in one of Turian's shoes.

Turian, a student at Cardiff University, had been visiting her aunt in Thailand and had also been teaching English in the nation for a month.

She told the BBC: "When I first saw the toad moving I was on the phone to my mum, I just closed the suitcase, and ran out.

"Me and my housemate then carried it upstairs into the bathroom. We unzipped the suitcase, and there's a toad sitting in the corner of it looking at us.

"When I arrived my suitcase got scanned before I could leave the airport. So I don't know how it wasn't spotted."

The Egg Wars of 1214 Fifth Avenue
Image

The StreetEasy listing for 1214 Fifth Avenue boasts that the 229-unit luxury high-rise “offers the best of everything” from “breathtaking Central Park views” to an indoor pool. The building — in which open apartments currently rent from $3,750 to $12,200 per month — also offers a tenant who loves to egg her neighbors and simply won’t stop.

According to Crain’s, the building’s landlords have filed a lawsuit against Yan Li, a tenant in a $3,400 studio apartment who allegedly began egging her neighbors’ doors in January. According to the lawsuit, Li has egged two neighbors multiple times, and the building managers say they caught her doing so on video. Tenants have gotten so scared (of the egging) that they’ve left the building altogether. One said she was “terrified by these incidents and believed that she was being targeted.” Li’s commitment to the bit (egging) persisted through a federal day of rest — one tenant was egged on July 4. When confronted by police, Li refused to speak — she slammed the door in their face, according to the suit — but did not egg them. The lawsuit states that the landlords “cannot reasonably re-rent these apartments while defendant’s conduct is ongoing.” (The defendant’s conduct being, of course, egging.)

Black Cat Appreciation Day seeks to bring good luck to black cats

Image

Black Cat Appreciation Day, celebrated annually on Aug. 17, started in 2011 by a New York man who wanted to memorialize his sister and dispel myths about black cats.

Wayne H. Morris founded the holiday in 2011 as a tribute to his sister and her 20-year-old cat, Sinbad, who had both died that year.

Morris said his father had tried to stop his sister from bringing Sinbad into the house, because he considered black cats to be bad luck.

Morris teamed up with Rikki's Refuge Animal Sanctuary in Virginia to turn Black Cat Appreciation Day into an annual fundraiser to support the more than 250 black cats living at the rescue. The holiday gained further popularity via social media.

Morris died on July 19 of this year at the age of 69.

Other holidays and observances for Aug. 17, 2022, include Baby Boomers Recognition Day, Balloon Airmail Day, Meaning of "Is" Day, National #2 Pencil Day, National I love My Feet Day, National Medical Dosimetrist Day, National Non-Profit Day, National Thrift Shop Day, National Vanilla Custard Day and World Calligraphy Day.

Woman stunned by vegan plane ‘meal’ served on Air Canada flight

A passenger on an Air Canada flight was left stunned at the “meals” she was given during the flight after she ordered several vegan meals, but was served only a bottle of water.

Miriam Porter, a travel blogger on TikTok who goes by the name @TheKindTraveler, was on a flight travellling from Toronto, Canada to Frankfurt, Germany when the incident occurred.

In a viral TikTok video that has had over 1.2 million views, Ms Porter explained how she ordered several vegan meals during the more than 10-hour flight, but was left hungry after claiming to be served nothing but water.

“POV: You are on an Air Canada flight for over 10 hours and order vegan meals,” her post begins.

The video then shows footage from the flight of her first “meal” being a bottle of water. For “meal 2” she showed a napkin with nothing on it.

Ms Porter says she was eventually given some food, but it was a makeshift meal a flight attendant cobbled together from leftover business class trays.

In the comments, she wrote: “Shout out to the kind flight attendant that got me fruit & dinner rolls from business class.”

She added: “I love fruit but also like entire meals!”

Passengers can choose from a selection of “special meals” in advance on Air Canada flights, varying from vegetarian to diabetic, kosher and vegan meal options.

“Special meals are available in all classes of service on all flights where a meal service is offered (except on flights offering Air Canada Bistro service),” the website states.

“We won’t be able to guarantee that your special meal request can be accommodated if it’s submitted less than 24 hours before the first flight in your itinerary.”

However, Ms Porter said her order was placed “well in advance and confirmed (many times)”.

“This has happened many times sadly. I always preorder in advance and bring my own food in case. But this time it was impossible,” she said.

Her post has been flooded with comments from users, with some asking why she didn’t just bring her own food this time.

“I always bring my own food in case but I was on a 24-hour delay and couldn’t make food to bring,” she explained in the comments.

Air Canada states: “You may bring your own snacks and food on board, or purchase meals and beverages at the airport before your flight – just make sure to purchase beverages after you’ve passed through security and take into consideration any limitations on bringing food through US pre-clearance when travelling to the US.”

Ms Porter described the situation as “annoying”, especially as she was already delayed and “trying to get home with little food”. She added that it took her two days to get home from Berlin.
