Woman Regains Sight After Going Blind as a Teen, Says Husband Is 'More Handsome Than I Could Have Imagined'

Thank goodness he isn't ugly as sin!

Image

A woman is reflecting on seeing her now-husband's face for the first time as a result of a surgery that helped her regain her vision.

In May 2017, Sophia Corah, then 18, woke up to find she had lost her vision, South West News Service reported. She was declared legally blind that August and was later diagnosed with keratoconus.

According to Mayo Clinic, keratoconus "occurs when your cornea ... thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape," and may require a cornea transplant in later stages.

Sophia, now 24, went on to attend college at Colorado's Adams State University, where she met Christian Corah. They became fast friends, with Christian, now 25, even helping her raise $20,000 for surgery to help repair her vision.

"My vision slowly started coming back, but it was very gradual while I healed," said Sophia, according to SWNS.

Image

Those procedures included an operation on Sophia's cornea in October 2018. Less than a year later, her vision returned for good — and she was finally able to see the face of the person who had been by her side.

"I could see how handsome he was — he had a gorgeous smile," Sophia, a science teacher in New Mexico, told SWNS. "I knew I'd fallen for him and had to tell him how I felt."

But while she loved what she saw with her own eyes, "I had already built a connection with him that it didn't matter what he looked like."

"But it was very nice to properly see his face after all this time," Sophia added. "He was even more handsome than I could have imagined."

Image

The two eventually professed their feelings for one another in October 2020, and celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary this past June.

"As soon as I met Sophia, I was drawn to her," Christian told SWNS of his "resilient" wife. "She was such a fighter."

Sophia said their "journey" together has been "amazing."

"Christian was there for me in the toughest times of my life and supported me and made me feel so special," Sophia said. "It brought us so close together."

13-Year-Old Allegedly Causes 4-Car Crash Involving School Bus After Taking Parents' Car Out

No major injuries were reported in the accident, which police said was caused by a 13-year-old who took her parents' Chevy Suburban out without their knowledge

Image

An underage driver is allegedly responsible for a four-car crash that took place Friday morning in Colorado.

The initial investigation by Colorado State Patrol (CSP) found that a 13-year-old girl caused the accident in eastern Boulder County, which involved a school bus, after taking her parents' Chevy Suburban without their knowledge, according to CBS Colorado.

Four people were transported to a nearby hospital with no major injuries, though KUSA 9 reported that a 66-year-old man sustained moderate injuries.

One student was on the bus, along with the driver, and was not injured. The bus driver had just started their route and another bus was dispatched to complete it.

All four vehicles were heavily damaged in the accident, which occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 287 and Lookout Road at 8:11 a.m. local time.

The 13-year-old driver was cited and released to her parents. CBS reported that she isn't expected to be jailed.

Eastbound Lookout Road and southbound 287 were closed for several hours during the investigation, but they reopened by 11:30 a.m., according to KUSA 9.

A representative for the Colorado State Patrol did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Can you delay ageing by refusing to act your age?
22nd July 2022*

• When old age starts depend on where you live in the world. But it may also partly depend on how you view ageing. Can you delay it with a positive attitude?

What age do you think counts as middle age? Forty to 60? Fifty to 70? Somewhere in between? It probably won't surprise you to learn that the answer people give to this question depends on how old they are at the time they are asked it.

When half a million people completed an online questionnaire in 2018 the participants who were in their 20s and 30s said on average that middle age began at 40, while old age started at 62. By contrast, the over-65s didn't think old age began until the age of 71.

It's fairly obvious what is going on here. No one really likes to think of themselves as getting older, so if you are 40 you relish articles that proclaim that 40 is the new 30. Likewise, people in their 70s are buoyed by suggestions that with advances in nutrition and health care they are barely out of middle age. Also, we tend to want to disassociate ourselves from any group that is stigmatised. This means we resist being designated as old, when we see elderly people portrayed as frail, sedentary, ill and even a burden on society.

Of course, old age is a reality and older people should be treated with respect and dignity. So are people simply deluding themselves if they refuse to consider themselves to be old? In fact, it turns out it might be a sensible strategy, one that can be self-fulfilling and life enhancing.

In 2003, the researchers Hannah Kuper and Sir Michael Marmot (famous for demonstrating the impact that socio-economic status in life can have on our health and life expectancy) carried out a wide-ranging study in which participants were again asked the question: when does old age start?

Answers varied of course, but what Kuper and Marmot found was that those people who thought old age began earlier were more likely to have had a heart attack, to be suffering from heart disease or be in poor physical health generally when they were followed up six to nine years later.

The participants in this study were taking part in the so-called Whitehall II study, a longitudinal study of more than 10,000 civil servants working in London. The research is robust, with participants asked a whole bank of questions. This meant that Kuper and Marmot could establish that other factors such as employment grade couldn't account for the differences in health outcomes.

Image

Thinking of your advancing years may make people more likely to be less active, affecting their health (Credit: LumiNola/Getty Images)

So how could the number you give to old age starting possibly have this great an impact on your health?

One idea is that the answer to the simple question of when old age starts actually provides a lot more information about a person than you might think. It might be, for instance, that the question prompts people to think about their own physical health, and if they have underlying health issues or a poor lifestyle, they might not feel that well and are moved to think old age is coming sooner.

People who think old age starts later in life may be more conscious about their health and fitness

People who say that old age sets in at an earlier age may also be more fatalistic and less likely to seek help for medical conditions or to adopt healthier routines, believing that decline is inevitable. They may, for instance, assume that older people are frail and so deliberately start walking more slowly and taking it easy when this is exactly what they shouldn't be doing for the sake of their physical and mental health.

They might expect to forget things due to their age, so they stop relying on their memories. It's even possible that the stress of holding negative ideas about ageing contributes to chronic inflammation and more health problems in the long term. So living up to the stereotype of an older person might increase the very problems they fear.

And all of this may be true the other way round too of course. People who think old age starts later in life may be more conscious about their health and fitness and therefore take active steps to stay in better shape. They think they are younger and so behave in younger ways, creating a virtuous circle.

Image

Whatever the explanation, the Kuper and Marmot study is not the only research to demonstrate measurable benefits of thinking positively about ageing. Becca Levy from the Yale School of Public Health, using data from the Ohio Longitudinal Study of Aging and Retirement, also produced some extraordinary findings. The Ohio study had followed imore than a thousand people who were at least 50 at the time.

She found that people who had positive ideas about their own ageing (who agreed with comments such as "I have as much pep as last year" and who disagreed that as you get older you get less useful) lived for an average of 22.6 years after they first participated in the study, while the people who felt less positively about ageing lived for just 15 years more on average.

People who saw old age more positively, as a time to learn new things and make new plans, for example, lived longer on average

Then along comes a new study conducted by Susanne Wurm from the University of Greifswald in northern Germany, which might pin down the problem more precisely. And her findings provide some good news for people who think more negatively about the onset of old age. They weren't any more likely than average to die early. But again, people who saw old age more positively, as a time to learn new things and make new plans, for example, lived longer on average.

In this study, it didn't matter as much what people thought about the physical implications of ageing, what mattered was whether they believed they would still develop and grow mentally.

Image

Thinking younger may help people keep themselves open to new experiences for long, with positive effects (Credit: Aleksandar Nakic/Getty Images)

None of this research means we can magically halt or reverse the ageing process. Eyesight, hearing, memory, muscle mass, bone strength, healing processes: you name it, they all decline. And older people are of course more vulnerable to a whole ranges of illnesses.

These big studies are all based on averages, so saying you're not middle aged isn't going to stop everyone getting ill. But in his book The Expectation Effect, science journalist David Robson has some tips for us. He suggests that instead of mourning the loss of youth, we should focus on the experiences and knowledge we gain as we get older and notice how much better we get at dealing with things.

When older people are unwell, they shouldn't assume that's all due to old age. Above all, as we age, we should never give up on trying to be healthier and believing that there are many things we can still do. If we adopt this attitude, we are likely both to live longer and to enjoy those years.

Utah couple's height difference earns them Guinness World Record

Image

A married couple from Utah earned a Guinness World Records title for their 2-foot, 9.44-inch height difference.

Christie Chandler, who stands 5 feet,11.74 inches tall, and Senecca Corsetti, who is 3 feet, 2.29 inches tall, became the first Guinness World Record holders for greatest height differential of a married couple (same sexes/women), the record-keeping organization announced.

Corsetti's height is a result of diastrophic dysplasia, a form of dwarfism that affects the normal development of cartilage and bone.

Chandler said she was inspired to apply for the record after reading about the world record for greatest height differential of a married couple (different sexes/taller woman).

Shaquille O'Neal cops a right hook from Hasbulla after meeting in Australia

NBA icon Shaquille O'Neal has copped a right hook from 19-year-old Russian internet sensation Hasbulla Magomedov as they met up in Australia.

A modern-day David against Goliath meeting, the seven-foot-one ex-basketballer and the three-foot-four influencer were filmed making some hilarious content and having some general fun together.

The duo were both in Australia for their respective talking tours.

Hasbulla, who is known for having a spicy and very short temper, was seen tapping Shaq on the shoulder before swinging is arm and body back to land a mighty punch right on the athlete's face.

"Hasbulla almost knocked me," the Basketball Hall of Famer wrote on social media.

The enormous sporting legend then laughed it off because, hey - it's probably quite hard to be sad when you're zipping around Sydney Harbour on a yacht with some of the world's most interesting folk.

The surprise punch comes after the Russian personality told his followers he was going to fight the former Los Angeles Lakers star on social media.

And it seems he is a man that keeps his word. Respect.

That also didn't stop the tiny yet fierce internet sensation to keep ribbing Shaq online.

Image

"Australia has been great," he wrote. "Shaq isn’t even that tall."

As well as meeting with Hasbulla, Shaq used his time Down Under to lend his support to the campaign for an Indigenous voice to parliament at the weekend.

He met with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney on Saturday (August 27).

"Whatever you need from me, just let me know," the NBA star told Albanese, as per 7 News. “Shaq loves Australia.”

Image

O’Neal’s support will form part of a broader strategy to engage people in the lead-up to a referendum on enshrining an Indigenous voice in the constitution.

"Shaq has agreed to do some (videos) and to have a chat about the importance of bringing people together, and that’s really what the voice to parliament and constitutional recognition is about," Mr Albanese said.

"He is a global figure, he’s a big figure in all ways."

Image

After meeting the PM and Hasbulla, Shaq has now left Australia.

We can only assume the man, previously labelled the best basketballer of all time, fled amid fears Hasbulla would attack again.

"I’m gonna miss you Australia," he wrote on Twitter, while wearing what appears to be a Crocodile Dundee replica hat.

Gardener smashes record for longest cucumber on the planet

Image

Sebastian Suski, who was born in Poland but now lives in Britain, grew the huge vegetable to an extraordinary length of 3 feet and 8.6 inches and eclipsed the previous benchmark by 2.5 inches.

Suski told Guinness World Records: "I'd grown big cucumbers but never quite long enough to beat the existing Guinness World Records title holder."

The gardener also thanked his wife Renata for helping him break the record as she cared for the cucumber when he was hospitalised with a leaking blood vessel in his head.

Suski recalled: "Doctors found a leaking blood vessel in my head and so I spent a week in hospital.

"But luckily my wife, Renata, was on hand to care for the cucumber and keep her well-watered and nourished.

"Without Renata, I wouldn't have this record."

White python on the loose in Pennsylvania city

Police in a Pennsylvania city are warning the public to be on the lookout for a white python that escaped while out for a walk.

The Duquesne Police Department said the python escaped from its owner during a walk around the neighborhood on Wednesday.

Neighbor Jaishon Jones said the owner had carried the snake outside to show it to him.

"It was white with bluish tint for eyes," Jones told WTAE-TV. "He had let me hold the snake, it's well taken care of so it was really friendly."

Family members said the snake, named Gene Simmons, escaped when the owner collapsed while carrying the python around the neighborhood.

Police said the snake is 5-7 feet long, but family members of the owner said Gene is only about 4 feet long.

Members of the public are being urged to call 911 if they encounter the white snake.

STORY = "Hundreds of Ancient Frogs Died from Exhaustion During Massive Orgy, Scientists Find"

There were a tons of stories that my wife and I thought were funny this week.
And as usual, we usually learn some things, but this one had us rolling in laughter
It makes you wonder why in hell scientists were researching this in the first place
The secondary headline was a real chuckle as well... "There’s a “horny toad” joke to be made somewhere in here."
There were also some other great lines...
"The frogs boned until they croaked. The habits of modern frogs and toads support Falk’s hypothesis. In case you didn’t know, getting to do the deed can be a death sentence for frogs. The amphibians like to go at it so hard that they simply over-exhaust themselves and drop dead. And if they don’t die during mating, they’re so stressed and tired afterward that they quickly succumb to diseases."
And the illustrations that went with the story were a real hoot as well.

Keanu Reeves Bumps Into Wedding Party and Stays For ‘Couple of Whiskies’ and Conversations in Pub

Image

Keanu Reeves was spotted having “a couple of whiskies” and chatting with a wedding party in the UK this week—continuing his reputation as the nicest guy in Hollywood.

Reeves met the groom on his wedding day at the bar of a 4-star hotel in Daventry and promised to come to the reception.

James Roadnight and bride Nikki were then thrilled when the actor turned up at Fawsley Hall Hotel & Spa, and happily took photos with the couple.

Later, the Matrix actor walked into The Fox and Hounds in Charwelton, and happily mingled with customers and posed for photos.

The bar’s owner Danny Ricks was shocked when the film star entered and sat down at a table.

“It’s not every day you get a Hollywood star walk into your pub. It made everyone’s evening.”

The 57-year-old ate a Caesar salad and appetizer followed by a main course of falafel—and washed it all down with “quite a few double whiskies.”

“It was bizarre. I had to do a double take when he walked in as I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. I thought ‘that guy looks quite a lot like Keanu Reeves.’

“He was just a down-to-earth guy and was really nice to everyone. Everything nice you would think about him was all true.

“He stood and took photos with customers and staff. Nothing was too much for him, he took plenty of time to chat with everybody.

“We managed to stay professional until the end of his visit, but of course, we had to get a picture with him.

“He was such a top bloke and absolutely lovely—and he certainly likes his whisky,” Danny gushed.

The Canadian actor was in the area filming a documentary about Brawn GP’s F1 championship-winning year of 2009. Reeves, famous for The Matrix franchise, is next starring in John Wick: Chapter 4, due to release in 2023.

‘Angry minion’ with no anus not related to humans after all, scientists conclude

New research rules out theory that 535m-year-old Saccorhytus coronarius fossil is our earliest known ancestor

Image

One less relative to be embarrassed about – scientists have ruled out the possibility that a 535m-year-old microscopic fossil that looks like an “angry minion” is our earliest known ancestor.

Previous research had suggested that Saccorhytus coronarius, a tiny sack-like creature, was an early member of a large group of animals called the deuterostomes, which vertebrates – including humans – belong to.

Now researchers say they are confident that Saccorhytus is not a deuterostome, but part of the same evolutionary group as arthropods, which includes insects and crustaceans.
A huge mouth and no anus – this could be our earliest known ancestor
Read more

“The paper suggested that Saccorhytus was an early member of our own evolutionary lineage, a group of animals known as the deuterostomes. But we had specimens that were better preserved, so we knew immediately that the authors had got it flat-out wrong,” said Philip Donoghue, a professor at the University of Bristol and co-author of the latest study published in Nature.

The team recently collected hundreds of additional specimens, which they used to create 3D digital models of the creature and that revealed microscopic features in more detail.

“Saccorhytus is only about a millimetre in size and looks like a tiny wrinkly ball with a bunch of spines and a mouth with rings of teeth around it,” said Donoghue. “I like to describe it as an angry minion.”

The discovery was made when the team realised that the spines and holes around the fossil’s mouth were not respiratory organs, which is what misled the previous researchers.

“The previous conclusion was based largely on the fact that Saccorhytus fossils have a series of holes around their mouth, which they interpreted as primitive gills, a feature of deuterostomes. But we now know that these holes are simply where teeth have broken away,” said Donoghue. “Our analysis suggests that Saccorhytus is actually a member of the group that arthropods and their relatives are part of, called the ecdysozoans, although we can’t say for sure exactly where it fits in.”

Whereas deuterostome embryos develop an anus followed by a second hole that becomes the mouth, Saccorhytus only has one opening, which serves as both.

“Saccorhytus does not have an anus, only a mouth-like structure where it would have happily let anything it had eaten back out again,” said Donoghue.

The search for our earliest ancestor continues, Donoghue said. “Our understanding of the deuterostome lineage is in an absolute mess. We are working our way through early fossils to gain a better understanding of our evolution,” he added.

Dr Imran Rahman, a principal researcher at the Natural History Museum, said: “This is a really nice study that convincingly overturns the original deuterostome interpretation of Saccorhytus coronarius.”

Man on trip to Toronto wins $6-million Lotto 6/49 jackpot after buying ticket at convenience store

Image

A man from British Columbia is now a multi-millionaire after buying a winning Lotto 6/49 ticket from a Toronto convenience store.

Troy Maulding of Burnaby, B.C. was in Toronto earlier this month for a work conference when he went to the store to buy bandages for a friend and decided to grab some lotto tickets as well.

Maulding returned to his hotel and that’s where he received the biggest surprise of his life.

“I was having some quiet time in my hotel room when I checked my tickets. The numbers I normally play didn’t win,” Maulding said in a quote from an OLG news release Friday. “Then I started matching the numbers from my Quick Pick. I had to double check what I was seeing.”

What Maulding saw were the winning numbers for the $6-million grand prize in the Aug. 6 Lotto 6/49 draw.

When Maulding realized his unimaginable luck, he apparently stood up in his hotel room, looked in the mirror and said “I won!”

He immediately contacted his wife and sister-in-law to tell them the news.

“I texted my wife and sister-in-law a photo of the ticket to double check for me but couldn’t wait to hear back so called them right away. Then I heard my sister-in-law say, ‘He won!’ That’s when I asked my wife to pack up and head down to Toronto to be with me,” he said.

Maulding said it was difficult to contain his excitement but focused on his job for the rest of his stay in Toronto.

“When I told my colleagues, they thanked me for my commitment to the work that had to be done and for staying for the entire conference in light of this incredible news,” Maulding said. “I almost cried. I was so humbled by the outpouring of love.”

He said his first act as a millionaire will be to buy a house and then “the rest will fall into place after that.

Maulding’s winning ticket was purchased at Unique Gift & Convenience on Front Street.

Lotto 6/49 tickets are $3 per play and draws take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The moral of this story is COME VISIT ME IN TORONTO!

Utah couple's height difference earns them Guinness World Record

Image

Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A married couple from Utah earned a Guinness World Records title for their 2-foot, 9.44-inch height difference.

Corsetti's height is a result of diastrophic dysplasia, a form of dwarfism that affects the normal development of cartilage and bone.

Chandler said she was inspired to apply for the record after reading about the world record for greatest height differential of a married couple (different sexes/taller woman).

"I was like 'Oh my gosh, we crushed that record,'" Chandler told Guinness.

The pair, who met while teaching at the same school and were married in June 2021, said they had joked about having a world-record height difference, but were surprised when it turned out to be true.

"We had talked about it before, like 'I bet we have the biggest height difference in the world,'" Corsetti said. "We had joked about it, but we were never serious about trying to get a title or anything."

The spouses said their height difference has more advantages than disadvantages.

"We joke that I clean the lowest and she cleans the highest," Corsetti said.

They said they hope their Guinness World Record will encourage others to embrace diversity.

"Seeing how other people live I think is good for other people in general," Corsetti said.

Princess Diana's Ford Escort sells for £650K at auction

A car which was used by the late Diana, Princess of Wales has sold for £650,000 (that's over a million bucks, folks!) at auction.

Princess Diana, who died nearly 25 years ago, drove the black Ford Escort RS Turbo for nearly three years from August 1985.

She was pictured with the car outside the boutique shops of Chelsea and in Kensington.

The car, registration C462FHK, was eventually sold by Silverstone Auctions in Warwickshire to a buyer in Cheshire.

The car was described by the auctioneers as "a piece of history"

The Leamington Spa-based auction house told people at the sale it was the "car of the day".

Auctioneer Jonathan Humbert said there had been huge interest in the vehicle, which had received the firm's largest number of telephone bids in 12 years.

The bidding began at £100,000 and soon became a contest between hopeful buyers in Dubai and Coventry.

But at around the £450,000 mark, the main bidding came from Cheshire and Dubai - with the UK-based buyer eventually winning out.

The auctioneer expressed his surprise when bidding climbed, commenting: "£500,000 for a Ford Escort? I've never said that before."

Mr Humbert had earlier said the car represented a "piece of history".

Princess Diana preferred to drive her own car and a member of the Royalty Protection Command (otherwise known as SO14) sat in the passenger seat.

The car sold on Saturday is believed to be unique as the first and only black RS Turbo Series 1 - as agreed between S014 and Ford for reasons of discretion - instead of the usual white manufactured model.

In June 2021, another Ford Escort used by Princess Diana sold at auction for £52,000.

'Emotional link'

Silverstone Auctions' classic car specialist Arwel Richards said, including the buyer's premium, the total sale cost was £730,000.

He said everybody at the auction house was "surprised" at the price the car finally went for.

However, Mr Richards said it was the car's rarity and the public's "emotional link" to it which made the vehicle special.

Ahead of the sale, he had said the "lucky bidder" would have invested in two things.

"He is going to have one the finest preserved examples of this model anywhere, and also the slice of social history that comes with the car.

"This car was known as the 'people's sports car' and the fact it was driven by the People's Princess just nails it."
