Naked sunbather chases wild boar through park after it steals his laptop bag
Image
A naked sunbather was seen chasing wild boar through a park after it stole his laptop bag.
Amusing photographs from Germany show the man running after the animal to try and claim the plastic bag back.
But the cheeky boar and its two piglets appear to be too quick for the sunbather, who can't keep up with their speedy little trotters.
As the incident unfolds, groups of friends and family sat on the grass watch on and laugh.
Heads are seen turning in surprise and amusement in the hilarious photographs.
The incident happened at Teufelssee Lake - a bathing spot in the Grunwell Forest in Berlin, Germany.

Iowa town asks: Where did we put our time capsule?

The small northwest Iowa city of Sheldon planned to make the opening of a time capsule one of the centerpiece events of its 150th anniversary this weekend, but it ran into a slight problem.

No one is sure where the time capsule is buried.

“We’re trying to find instructions on exactly where it’s at before we just start digging,” said Sheldon Chamber of Commerce Director Ashley Nordahl. “We think we know where it is, but to dig up concrete in the park when we have such a big event going on, we’re just postponing that to a little bit later in the year.”

Image

The time capsule was buried 50 years ago during Sheldon’s centennial celebration and over time its specific location became a bit fuzzy. Event organizers had planned to open the time capsule during a town birthday celebration Friday morning featuring birthday cake and coffee. They then planned to place new items inside the capsule and rebury it.

The other events will go on as planned, with the time capsule unveiling delayed until workers can find it. To do that, the city will hire a company with an underground radar system that helped the nearby city of Sibley find its time capsule earlier this year.

“We still have every intention of finding it and digging it up,” Nordahl said. “It’s just a little more involved than what we originally had planned.”

Sheldon, a city of 5,178 people about 160 miles northwest of Des Moines, was founded in 1872.

Squirrel stows away from India to Scotland on a boat

Image

Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers in Scotland said they are now caring for a squirrel that ended up thousands of miles from home when it stowed away on a boat that departed from India.

The North East Wildlife & Animal Rescue Center, or NEW ARC, said it was contacted by Pest Solutions in Aberdeen when the group came into possession of a squirrel captured by crew members on a boat.

NEW ARC rescuers said the squirrel had been captured by the crew of the Deep Explorer three days before the end of their three week journey from India to Scotland.

"They looked after him and were feeding him grapes to keep him well after they took him into custody," NEW ARC rescuer Keith Marley told The National. "I believe he had been spotted before then but he is faster than a fast thing so he took a bit of effort to catch."

The animal is believed to be a palm squirrel, a common species of India-native squirrel also known as a three-banded squirrel.

Marley said the squirrel, named Zippy, is being kept in quarantine.

"He is doing well. He was a bit tired and panicked when he first came in, and stressed, but he had a good feed and seems to be behaving very much as a squirrel normally would," Marley said.

NEW ARC is now attempting to find a specialist to give Zippy a permanent home.

"In an ideal world we would like to return him home but it's unlikely we will be able to return him to India," Marley said. "We will be checking zoos to see if anyone has this variety of squirrel in their collection in the hope that we can donate him so he can live out his life with his own kind and will hopefully have a comfortable life."

Alligator wrangled in parking lot of Florida Wendy's

Image

Authorities in Florida captured a large alligator found in an unusual location: a Wendy's parking lot.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that deputies responded to a report of an alligator "loitering" outside the Wendy's on Commercial Way in Spring Hill.

Deputies contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which sent a trapper to assist with the capture.

The post featured photos of the alligator being wrangled with tape in the Wendy's parking lot.

The alligator was taken into custody by the FWC trapper.

Firefighters rescue cow with head stuck in tree

Image

Firefighters in the U.K. recently happened upon a cow in a sticky situation, as it had somehow gotten its head wedged inside a tree.

The truly "holy cow!" moment occurred Wednesday in the U.K. village of Chilbolton in Hampshire.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called out to the scene to discover that the cow had stuck its head completely through a fork in the three, and was unable to move.

It is unclear how or when the cow first got stuck.

The firefighters worked with an animal rescue advisor to begin cutting around the tree, slowly removing portions of the willow. A specialized rescue vehicle was reportedly also brought in to assist.

Eventually, the animal was able to free itself and was apparently no worse for the wear.

According to a report from the BBC, the entire rescue operation took over an hour.

With the cow being safe, the local authorities appeared to have some fun with the incident on social media.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service tweeted that the situation was "udderly ridiculous!" and added that the crew had worked to "re-moove" the cow from his temporary trappings.

This Company is Mass-Producing T-Shirts From Mass-Produced T-Shirts—Closing a Wasteful Fashion Loop
By Andy Corbley

Image

A company is seeking to target the worst aspects of wasteful fast fashion and demonstrate and economically-profitable circular economy with that most standard of garments—the t-shirt.

Utilizing the second-largest source of cotton on Earth, Teemill’s business model is making mass-produced t-shirts from mass-produced t-shirts.

These days, if you’re having a corporate event, a good idea is to print 100 cotton t-shirts to commemorate it. Going on tour and looking to drum up some merchandise money for your band? Print 500 cotton t-shirts to sell at the merch booth.

Trying to keep the World Wildlife Fund’s profits going? Print 10,000 cotton t-shirts to send to donors.

In the world of fast fashion, the ubiquity of the casual t-shirt with something printed on it seems immeasurable in scope.

That’s where Teemill comes in. Claiming a truckload of clothes is dumped in a landfill or burned around the world every second, they’re trying to get a handle on this waste flow by cutting off the t-shirt spigot.

Every t-shirt bought from Teemill can be sent back, ground up into cotton fibers, sterilized and remade into new t-shirts in a pair of carbon-neutral factories powered by renewable energy.

“We get told constantly as consumers ‘change what you buy, make better choices, educate yourself, do your bit.'” explains Teemill Co-founder Mart Drake-Knight in a TedX about his experience entering into sustainable fashion.

“So when we tried to do our bit and buy products made from organic materials… or products that are designed in such a way that they don’t eventually end up in a landfill, it’s like they don’t exist. Actually the more we looked, the more we learned that almost everything in the world seems to be made in the exact same way.”

The torso tag on every shirt comes with a QR code that when sent back to Teemill is scanned and worth a little rebate. In this way the consumer also becomes the supplier, and where Teemill would have to buy new cotton, they instead spend that money on shipping to retrieve old or unwanted Teemill tees from previous buyers, and on a little incentive for them to do so.

Sustainable fashion is not catching up to the waste from its more wasteful industry cousins, and selling sustainably grown cotton, or t-shirts made from recycled water bottles, when the price point is over $25 a shirt, is just not going to catch on.

Taking advantage of economies of scale by selling in bulk to people who need hundreds of t-shirts, and lower manufacturing costs from opening a factory in India, Teemill is adapting the aspects that made fast fashion so wasteful and using them to their advantage.

To these they pair smart tech innovations like machines that print t-shirts with custom designs in real-time along with orders to reduce the amount of warehouse inventory needed, and cloud platforms that allow small designers to start their own fashion brands linked to the Teemill circular model.

Penguin fitted with special orthopedic shoe can waddle in style

Image

Lucas the penguin now has a case of happy feet.

And the mission was a success. Zookeepers at the San Diego Zoo put Lucas' new boots on him and he immediately began trying them out.

Now, report the keepers, he's waddling along and is able to keep up with -- and, more importantly, socialize with -- the other penguins.

In fact, it's going even better than expected -- Lucas already has a girlfriend.

The four-year-old penguin had been coping with a case of bumblefoot, an infection in some animals that causes their feet to become swollen and develop painful lesions. As a result, the other penguins at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park didn't want to hang out with him, leaving Lucas feeling left out.

Enter Thera-Paw, a New Jersey-based company that specializes in boots and other protective footwear for animals.

Zookeepers had Lucas walk across sand to create an impression, then created molds of his feet.
From there, Thera-Paw's team created a special pair of orthopedic boots for Lucas, made of Neoprene and rubber with extra padding on the bottoms. The black shade looks as close to his natural foot color as possible so as not to stand out too much.

The San Diego Zoo is the largest zoo in California. And it turns out that Lucas isn't the first animal there who has ever needed help walking.

Earlier this year, Msituni, a three-month-old giraffe, was fitted with custom-made leg braces to correct a birth defect that resulted in not being able to walk.

The special giraffe-print braces did the job and eventually were removed once she was capable of walking -- and leaping -- on her own.

Making Batteries Out of Crab Shells May Be a Great Idea
Watch out, Mr. Krabs: Crustacean shells could provide a crucially biodegradable material for batteries
Image

The world could create more sustainable batteries with an unusual source: crustaceans. In a paper published this week in the journal Matter, researchers say they have made a biodegradable battery with a substance found in crab and lobster shells.

A crucial part of the way that batteries work is an electrolyte substance that sits between the two electric terminals at either end, which helps ions move back and forth between the positively and negatively charged terminals to generate electricity. Conventional batteries rely on lead or lithium (e.g., lead-acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries), but these batteries come with a host of issues.

We’re going to need a huge amount of batteries to move off of fossil fuels, but traditional electrolyte substances bring with them a host of new issues: They can be incredibly complex to recycle, the electrolytes are not biodegradable, and they can be dangerous in their own right, sometimes exploding or causing fires. In the case of lithium batteries, there’s also an issue with the destructive mining practices the world may have to engage with in order to obtain enough lithium for our projected energy needs.

Enter crustaceans. Crabs and lobsters have a material in their exoskeletons called chitin, which helps keep their shells tough and strong. Chitin can also be made into a derivative called chitosan, which researchers combined with zinc to create a new electrolyte substance to power a battery that they say remains almost entirely energy efficient after 400 hours of use. What’s more, unlike traditional battery electrolytes, this crab goo will break down in soil in about five months, leaving zinc—that can be recycled—behind.

“In the future, I hope all components in batteries are biodegradable,” lead author Liangbing Hu, director of the University of Maryland’s Center for Materials Innovation, said in a press release. “Not only the material itself but also the fabrication process of biomaterials.”

If any crabs reading this are getting nervous, don’t worry—there’s other sources of chitin in the world. Crustacean shells are particularly chitin-rich, but chitin can also be found in the walls of fungi and parts of squid.

Alas, one laboratory test of a biodegradable lobster energy pack does not mean that all our dirty battery problems are solved. “When you develop new materials for battery technologies there tends to be a significant gap between promising lab results and a demonstrable and scalable technology,” Graham Newton, a professor of materials chemistry at the University of Nottingham who was not involved in the study, told the Guardian.

Still, Newton said that the study was encouraging. “There are still quite a few challenges to be met in the development of zinc ion batteries, but fundamental studies such as this are hugely important,” he said. We can’t be too crabby about that.

Amazon Delivery Driver Saves 3 Terrier Puppies from Florida House Fire

"Thank you will never be enough!" the mother of the dog owners said in a Facebook comment following their rescue

Image

An Amazon driver really did deliver during a recent workday in Florida.

On August 30, the unidentified female was working in North Central Florida when she saw smoke rising from a nearby home and called the police.

Although there were no people in the home at the time, three Boston terrier dogs were present – and thanks to her quick thinking they were all saved.

"During a structure fire yesterday, 3 puppies were saved and revived from smoke inhalation," the Columbia County Fire Rescue said in a Facebook post Wednesday. "Thank you to the Amazon driver who noticed the smoke and called 911. Since the homeowner was not at home at the time, she saved the home and the puppies lives!"

The fire department also added photos showing the rescue of the saved Boston terriers as they were being treated by emergency personnel.

"Many thanks and appreciation!!! Those are my daughter's dogs that we love very much," a woman named Lisa Ann Dunn commented on the post, without providing details of the owners. "They are doing well this morning but still in the hospital. Thank you will never be enough!" she added.

According to Dunn the rescued pooches lost beds, toys, and bowls in the fire. Thanks to the kind support of the local community, however, she added that both the puppies and their owners are now recovering from the incident.

"One of the rescues has helped tremendously by paying the deductibles for their care at the hospital," Dunn wrote.

Regarding the current condition of the terriers, she added, "They will need to be there another 48 hours most likely. They had significant lung damage but seem to be stabilizing."

A water ski club without water

Image

Rodney Senior describes it as “the water ski club without water”.
Lake Cooper is located at Corop, midway between Shepparton and Bendigo on the Midland Hwy, only two hours from Melbourne.
It has a large clubroom, with kitchen, bar, toilets, showers and change rooms. There is a caravan park with on-site cabins and an in-ground swimming pool. There is a triple boat ramp, judges’ tower and plenty of parking for boats, competitors and spectators.
The one thing it does not have is water.

Mr Senior believes, however, with a turn of the tap the water could flow and water skiers could have a safe, permanent place to call home, which it already is, in a sense.
“Victorian Water Ski Association still lease the land off, I think the Department of Environment, but can't water ski because there’s no water in it,” Mr Senior said.
He said, though, that places water skiers could go were dwindling, and had been for some time.
“I first learnt to water ski when I was eight years old and back then my family had lots of lakes to choose from, including Shepparton Lake (Victoria Park Lake), Lake Nagambie, Lake Mokoan, Lake Mulwala, Waranga Basin, Greens Lake and Lake Cooper.
“Fifty years later only two of these lakes can be used for water skiing, Lake Mulwala and Waranga Basin, but when the wind is greater than 15 knots those two lakes are unsuitable for water skiing safely.”
He said there was no longer skiing on Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton, Lake Nagambie had a rowing course on it and speed limits, Lake Mokoan had been returned to wetlands, and Lake Mulwala and Waranga Basin had safety issues.
“Lake Mulwala is part of the Murray River system. The issue with the Murray River is that's where everyone goes: wake-boarders, jet skiers, ski racers, water skiers, learn-to-skiers,” he said.
“We're all using the same river and it's bloody dangerous, and I've experienced some of the danger because I'm using my boat there, but I would not take my grandchildren to learn to ski there.
“Waranga Basin, you can still ski there, but it's too bloody big. It's the fourth biggest lake in Victoria and it's just enormous and when wind conditions get above 10 knots up to 15 knots you can’t ski on the lake.”
Mr Senior said water skiers were desperate for a place they could call home and hold regular events.
He has suggested, instead of storing water in Waranga Basin, from where water is now being released because the level is getting too high, it be stored in Lake Cooper.
“Then we would have a venue where you can have a wake-boarding event this weekend, a jet skiing event this weekend, a ski race this weekend, we could have tournament skiing, we could have a learn-to-ski day,” he said.
“The facilities are all there. The fact is, the facilities there would now cost millions (of dollars). It would be a three or four million dollar project to build what they've done.”
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning manages Lake Cooper and its facilities while Greens Lake and Lake Cooper were previously part of Goulburn-Murray Water’s irrigation network.
G-MW water resources manager Mark Bailey said the two lakes were unlikely to be filled in the near future.
“The removal of Greens Lake from G-MW’s irrigation network means the storage has returned to its natural watering regime,” Dr Bailey said.
“It will be wetter in wet years and drier in dry years.
“G-MW’s core role is to harvest, store and deliver water for its customers and entitlement holders who own water. As Lake Cooper is no longer part of G-MW’s irrigation network, delivering water to it would reduce the amount of water available to our customers and increase prices.”
Dr Bailey said removing the lake from the irrigation network saved its customers hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in operating costs.

Shanghai’s ‘Little Princess of Anfu Road’ Is an Unlikely Inspiration For Everyone
August 26th, 2022*

The ‘Little Princess of Anfu Road’ is a Chinese woman from Shanghais believed to be in her early 50s who always goes out in elegant Lolita-style dresses.

Photos of the ‘Little Princess of Anfu Road’ started doing the rounds online a few weeks ago, drawing mixed reactions from the general public. Some called her a breath of fresh air, others a ‘crazy old lady’ who dressed well below her years, but everyone was intrigued by her, as she always seemed to have a new outfit on, and she seemed to ooze self-confidence despite all the criticism directed at her. As the days passed by, interest in this mysterious character of Shanghai grew, and soon everyone learned that there was a heartwarming story behind her extravagant wardrobe.

Image

When the Little Princess of Anfu Road – nicknamed after the road she was originally spotted on – first started walking around Shanghai in her little Lolita dresses, some people ridiculed her, and many believed that she was struggling with mental health issues. However, it turned out that she was just living her dream…

Image

A couple of days ago, a number of Chinese news outlets started reporting that the middle-aged woman, whose name has not yet been revealed, had been dealing with a serious health condition, and that the treatment she was under for several years had caused her hair to fall out and her figure to balloon. As the years passed by, deep wrinkles appeared on her face, and as she was staring at herself into the mirror one day, she just couldn’t recognize herself anymore.

Image

But instead of going into a depression, the woman remembered the Lolita dresses she loved so much in her youth, and how she had never gotten the chance to wear them. Finding that style of attire in her size proved difficult, so she started making them to-order, and before long she had so many that people started talking about how she never wears the same dress twice.

Image

She may not have perfect hair, an enviable figure, or the beauty associated with youth, but the self-confidence of the Little Princess of Anfu Road has been winning her legions of admirers. Gone are the snarky and negative comments on her photos, now everyone sings her praises forliving her dream without worrying about what anyone says.

Image

“She is so courageous and confident,” one Weibo user recently wrote.

“Just make the rest of your life the way you like!” someone else commented.

Image

Regardless of how you feel about her wardrobe, you have to admit that it takes a lot of courage to step out on the street wearing something like this, especially in one’s later years. What can I say but ‘more power to her’!

Wandering carpet python removed from Australian school window

Image

An Australian snake catcher was called to a Queensland school to remove a large carpet python spotted lounging inside a window.

Stuart McKenzie, of Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, posted a video to Facebook showing what happened when he was called out to a local school Friday.

"We headed over to a local school where a rather healthy carpet python was hanging out in the windows of the main hallway," McKenzie wrote. "A few of the teachers and students didn't feel comfortable with it being there, so we headed out and relocated it."

McKenzie said the snake "didn't come out easily" and he ended up cutting through a screen to reach the python.
