i don't think that youtube was the main factor in their popularity, i think that the companies which signed them mounted a very aggressive publicity campaign, which unfortunately worked. but in their case it was all about pr. in the case of the indie authors i think that in time even if you are not business savvy or not very interested in pr, if you are good you become known, if you are not you disappear, but if you depend on publishing companies where there are a lot of games to be played you might never get the chance to publish your works
