i don't know what happened to j k rowling, but if she/he ended begging on the streets i bet it happened because she/he trusted the wrong persons and because the laws are made to protect the corrupt and not the small honest individual :(

it happens to all of us to trust the wrong person and get kicked in the butt. if we are lucky we can get up and start again, if not :(

there are a lot of celebrities who made a lot of money and trusted in their managers to take care of them and surprise surprise they discover that they are bankrupt owing money to the irs and finish living on the streets. rowlings started bad and was lucky and probably smart enough to finish good, it so happens that there are a lot who start good and finish very bad, because the system doesn't protect us :|

there are a lot of authors who lived very poorly although their books were a success because the publishing companies bought the rights for their books for a few dollars...

Rowling is a good role model to authors . She knows how to make her deals . Not just with her publishers but she also didn't just throw away the movie rights . She made her demands . She made sure she could influence as much as possible how the movie was made . Wish all authors did that .

yeah, but she is the lucky exception. maybe now because of the internet and the possibility of going indie the publishing companies will be forced to offer better deals to the authors, before there was no incentive to do so, they had the power now the power is shifting, that is the reason that the indie movement gets such bad press :D

. . . I'm not sure I want to become Mobilism's most popular contester if it requires quite so much begging . . . :-x . . . Now , if it was threatening that was required instead . . .

i take all the reviews with a grain of salt. if a book has a small number of glowing reviews i become suspicious that the reviews are not for real, if there are a lot of reviews some good, some bad i tend to believe more in their accuracy. also i noticed that books which i liked or considered ok, got bad reviews and vice versa, i consider this to happen because after all we are very different, have different standards, are bothered by different things.

for example i am not as annoyed of grammar or spelling problems, depending on the story i might even get past the fact that a character has inconsistencies or that there are loopholes, it all depends on the book as a whole. i read books who others found boring because they could predict the flow of the story, but i found them a breath of fresh air because even if they were predictable they had something special, and i read books who were very different and new in their genre, but in the end i just didn't like them. we are very subjective, but that's alright that's what makes the world go round ;) because of the indies there is a chance at better and more interesting books.

even the best of books will have people who didn't like them (we are just that different), so if a book has a lot of reviews, but none bad than the reviews are faked (in my opinion).

absolutely, positively, yes Zacharie ;)
