They don't smell, you have to keep their litterbox clean, that's all.
And they are not selfish, they are autocrats: they were revered as gods in ancient times and never forgot about it

i think that it depends a lot on the sex of the cat, the male has the instinct of marking his territory and because of that it might and will get stinky, but if you have a female and the right kind of sand it won't stink at all

They also revered crocodiles and other animals but you don't see crocodiles going around demanding to sleep on the exact spot on the couch where you are sitting.
Crocodiles are very polite.
