Hi PJ, Katy and Everyone!!

JG - ohhhh the pressure, the pressure.... umm you may want to consider secondary interests to the main mystery point... if you're a foodie you might want to start with Pie in the Sky, if you like legal issues you might like Kingdom (w Stephen Fry and beautiful sceneries, but ends with a bit of a cliffhanger), if you like magic then Jonathon Creek may be to your liking... if you like 50's era then you might like Endeavour which is actually the prequel to Morse, even though Morse aired first, the lead character passed away, so it's a reboot of the series... Beautiful scenery then go with Shetland (stunning vistas)... If you like gardening then Rosemary and Thyme... If you like wine and a little bit of country music then the New Zealand show The Brokenwood Mysteries might be for you, just finished series 4, although the wine part was concentrated more in the first season and then pretty much forgotten after that...
Now some of them are REALLY long running for example Midsomer Murders is 19 series long, and has a spinoff series Lewis which has 7 series... Even though a British series is shorter than an American season, it would still need a fair amount of commitment and hunting... the older the show the harder it is to find...
If you like something recent and short then Agatha Raisin has just finished it's first series awaiting the second... or the Australian series of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, has a couple of series under her belt but if you don't like a female lead then Strike is really good (that's the J.K. Rowling book series) or Jack Taylor (which I think is an Irish production but don't quote me on that)...
I also like Vera, DCI Banks and the Swedish/American series Wallander, although that one makes me sad... There are just sooooo many that I find it hard to recommend one... it's also why I don't like recommending books to people!!

I better quit or else I will go on and on...

EDIT - Death in Paradise is really good too... tropical locale, beautiful!!
